Happy Homecoming-2

The Anti-Mutant Cubicles

Tension Level: 6

You go to R&D, where an Orange citizen in an orange labcoat and a Green citizen in a green labcoat wait for you.

"Ah, here at last," the Green says.  "Over there," he says, pointing, "are seven cubicles."

You look and see seven tiny booths with doors that seal closed.  They are totally opaque, made of a shiny metal, and look ominously claustrophobic and dangerous.

"Those booths," the Green continues, "are what we are calling the Anti-Mutant Cubicles."

"Has a nice ring to it, eh?" says the Orange.

Green says, "They are numbered 1-7.  As there are only 6 of you, one of the booths will go untested today.  I will let you choose which booth each of you wants to test."

Orange leans over and whispers to the Green, "Tell them what they do."

"Oh, yes, you'll love this!" says the Orange, clapping his hands together.  "We have designed booths which will take a mutation out of our mutants.  We heard that you have two registered mutants, which made you ideal.  Now, for the rest of you that don't have a mutation, there is no danger.  You are the control, and you just need to sit there and wait.  As for the registered mutants, these cubicles should completely take away your mutation!  Isn't that great?"

Orange whispers to him, "But let them know the risk."

"Yes, yes.  Well, there is a risk involved if you have a mutation.  We aren't sure what it is.  It could have no effect, could physically...uh...make you unattractive."

"Radiation poisoning," Orange clarifies.

"Or it could result in death.  But that's why you're here.  If this is successful, all our mutants can have their mutations safely removed.  And it is perfectly safe for non-mutants.  So decide amongst yourselves which booths you will use.  Because this is a personal, non-mission decision, your team leader cannot assign booths."

You walk over and look closely at the booths:

BOOTH 1:  It is made of a shiny silver and looks like a squarish phone booth.

BOOTH 2:  It is golden and curved.

BOOTH 3:  It is a bronze, pill-shaped box.

BOOTH 4:  It is shiny white with a little engine or other device attached to the back.

BOOTH 5:  It is emerald green and looks a bit like an Easter Island statue (although you don't know what that is).

BOOTH 6:  It is made of something appearing to be polished stone, with what appears to be exhaust pipes near the bottom.

BOOTH 7:  It is made of heavy iron and lead and looks like something shown on an old vid called an iron maiden.

"A credit says it works." CL says then shrugs and inspects the large iron box from the inside and then announces, "This is to the standards of the computers sanitary. I shall choose this one."

Green says, "The difference is primarily that we had to outsource the work to different production companies in Alpha Complex.  So they had different production methods and there are differences in their mechanical structure.  But...they should all work the same.  Regardless, we are trying to choose which one works best.  If one of them kills you, we know not to use that company."

Orange says, "You will have to leave all your equipment and supplies on the table next to your respective booths."

They look unconcerned with what you are carrying and unlikely to go through it.  They are too excited about trying out their new toys and don't seem to suspect anyone of treason.

Good thing we weren't outfitted first then.

Gunther says removing his jumpsuit and going into the silver cabin (#1) wearing nothing, as the computer made him.

Re: Happy Homecoming-2

You each get in your separate booths.  They are turned on and...

...things start to happen.  There are shimmies and bumps, whirrs and whistles, vibrations and probes, stinks and gases...

...and then the doors open and you step out, feeling a little different.

"Well," the Orange citizen says, "how did it go?  No mutations or side effects, right?"

You pause on wavering feet to answer...and feel...

...CHANGED somehow.  Different somehow.  Just how?

[Details to follow.]

[Everyone roll a 1d20 please...or I will roll for you.]

Seth fearlessly leaps into the third booth and closes it so it fits tightly around him.

An odd muted humming noise is heard to come from inside a few moments after the lid has closed.

OOC: Sorry for the delays.  My wife has been in and out of the hospital over the past two weeks.

The strange feeling you get is a new mutation!  OOC: The mutations were randomly calculated using your roll plus a roll from me, using the "Mutant Experience" rules.

These mutations will probably be new to all of you since they are part of the expansion.  I will put individual descriptions in your character threads.

None of you actually "LOOKS" any different.

"So," Orange citizen says, insistent,  "Tell me how you feel.  No mutations?  Everything feel great?"

The Orange scientist smiles broadly.  "That is just..."  He looks up at the cameras.  "...just as expected, of course."  He hands Gunther some paperwork.  "Fill this out and your mutation will be deregistered.  If you have doubts about whether you mutation is actually gone, I am required to tell you that you may remain registered until you feel sure it is gone."

Re: Happy Homecoming-2

Your PDC's beep simultaneously.  You have five minutes to get back to Outfitting.  Your hour time limit is almost up, and you could swear it's at least a ten minute walk to get there down the corridors from R&D.

As a reminder:
quote:
The outfitting officer stands there typing into the computer as Gunther does the inspection.  "Ah, yes, I do have that number," he says to the number given by TL Seth.  "But it says here before I issue that equipment, you are to report to R&D.  I will send the sector and coordinates to the Team Leader's PDC as soon as the Equipment Guy's inspection is complete."

And you are sure your time limit for getting to the Happy Homecoming location is going to be up soon too, although you need your equipment first before you even know how much time you'll have.

Re: Happy Homecoming-2

Seth erupts from the machine he had climbed into, trembling with rage. He looks the Orange citizen right in the eye and shouts "How do I feel?!  I feel like I've been caught up in a mutant commie plot to subvert the very threads of our society and unmake all that the glorious computer has struggled to make for us in Alpha Complex. That... abomination (he gestures to the machine he was in) has induced a mutation in me!  I demand the immediate termination of this tainted clone and a replacement at R&D's expense.

Who knows how far this goes!  I'll be submitting a report to IntSec calling for a thorough investigation of the machine's designer, the company and personnel that built and installed it, and anyone else involved!"

Seth turns to his recording officer, "Joseph, take our statements and this stun prod, make sure nobody leaves this room until IntSec arrives, then meet us at outfitting.  The rest of you troubleshooters, move out!  Gunther, as the expert on all things relating to equipment and outfitting, you are responsible for picking the shortest path to outfitting and getting us there in time."

Re: Happy Homecoming-2

Orange says, "We can certainly terminate your clones, but that might force us to terminate all of your clones.  You see, these pods link directly to the Computer mainframe and may actually upload any changes directly into any of your clones, just like your memory is constantly being uploaded into your clones.  We've...uh...we've never encountered this before.  Perhaps terminating this clone will take away the mutation, but perhaps it will not.  Besides, we have IntSec guideline controls to follow, which mean that you must be taken to be dissected and studied to find out what went wrong."

Then the Orange citizen says, "There is a much simpler solution to this problem, though.  As you can see, the other pods all worked perfectly on your companions.  Simply step into one of those pods, and we shall take away your mutation.  Then there is nothing to worry about."

He indicates the pod Gunther (the registered mutant) had gone into, and points with authority.  (He is, after all, an Orange citizen and outranks you.)

Re: Happy Homecoming-2

Seth considers it warily for a moment then finally agrees.  There's the barest chance that it was an honest accident and not a mutant conspiracy.  "Thank you for keeping a clear head, I just get so worked up when I think about treasonous mutie scum.  I can't wait to get rid of this terrible affliction!" After thanking the Orange he considers how much time is left and sticks by his previous instructions, telling Joseph to keep a lookout and wait for IntSec with him, while the rest of the group follows Gunther to outfitting.  If all goes well he and Josepth will only be minutes behind.

Then, putting on a brave smile, he climbs into the pod Gunther previously occupied.

Once they are filled out, INTSEC takes them, makes sure they are properly filled out in triplicate, and says, "You realize you will be under close monitoring to make sure your mutation is truly gone?  If caught with it now, you will be sent for dissective interrogation or, if by fraud, sent in as a traitor.  Have a nice day."

INTSEC turns to leave.

Orange is still waiting for a response from Seth as Gunther hurries to catch up with the others.

OOC: We're sort of in two different timelines now.  All of this preexisted Happy Homecoming 3 thread.  We should move it over there quickly so we're all in the same time-space continuum.
