The EVE Complex - 3 (EVE)

HERE IS TO REFRESH YOUR MEMORY ABOUT WHERE YOU ARE GOING:
"The Blue Clearance clone says, "My name is Marv-N-JUS.  I was leading the Indigenous Experimentation project for Project Merger.  We experimented on indigenous species found outside of Alpha Complex to see how we could turn them into servants of The Computer.  EVE was an AI designed to help with the project, but she went haywire.  At first, she tried merging all living things, even the clones, into indigenous and inanimate objects to create 'presents' for The Computer.  Then she started writing love letters over 2 billion words long, filled with images and clogging our computers.  They were all written to The Computer.  The AI EVE somehow thinks it has fallen in love with The Computer, and seeks to have its attention."

He strokes his growth of beard.  "When she got cut off from The Computer a few weeks ago, she started killing the clones, blaming them for hurting her relationship with The Computer. Maybe she was even jealous.  She expanded the Project Merger so that it grew foliage into the halls, used robots as her minions instead of clones, and made the hybrids throughout the biodome that are dangerous to all of us.  I hid in here, and have been here ever since."

He says, "Bring me the datachip labeled 'EVE Project BETA,' and I can install it from here.  It should turn EVE off and stop this madness.  The chip was in R&D with my friend Fred-E-FIN.  I don't know where he put it, but if you can find it, I'll stop this once and for all."

You navigate back out of R&D, marveling for a moment on all the doors you didn't open and investigate.  Then you go back through decontamination, collect your gear again, and return to Marv-N.

You show him the datachip and he is visibly excited.  He takes the datachip and inserts it into the nearest computer.  "Now," he says, "to deactivate EVE and get us all back to Alpha Complex to report back that we've destroyed an enemy of The Computer."  After a moment, he says, "Uh-oh."  That's not a good uh-oh either.  It's the type of uh-oh that makes your skin crawl.

"Apparently," he says apologetically, "EVE has isolated this computer from her--I mean, its--main network.  I'll need to install it on a local computer.  That means we have to get to her mainframe.  That also means," he says with a gulp, "that EVE now knows where we are.  My hidey hole here has been found out.  We have to get out of here, and fast.  He starts collecting his things and pulls out the datachip.

OOC: If you want to say anything to him before leaving, now is the chance.

GOAL: Get Marv-N to EVE unharmed so he can upload the datachip to shut down her mainframe.

Gene says, "Are any of us able to learn how to upload that thing?  You know, just in case you don't make it?"

Re: The EVE Complex - 3 (EVE)

Marv-N looks suspiciously at Gene. "You are only a red clearance clone with probably next to no skills in computer programming.  Do you really think I can teach you how to upload such complicated software in the few moments we have here?  We have to get out of here now.  EVE has probably already dispatched some hybrid monster to make sure we don't get out of here."

He grabs a backpack and a laser pistol.  "Oh, if something happens to me and I don't survive, all is not lost.  Just go to the R&D sector vats, which is next to where you found the datadisk, and my new clone will be waiting to pick up where we left off.  But please, let's make sure that doesn't happen.  EVE will be on your tail the whole way."

He leads you out and to the right, down the tracks of "R&D: THE RIDE -- YOUR TOUR STARTS HERE."

OOC: To recall the fun you had with R&D: The Ride, see message 57 here: link to a message in this game

ALSO, HERE IS A REMINDER OF THIS AREA:
You peek through the curtained area, and see a number of drills and other machinery blocking the tracks.  The far end has caved in, whether by accidental explosion or deliberation, you don't know.

On your left is another exhibit that was not finished.  Actually, upon inspection, it looks like it was finished and then was in the process of being changed when construction was interrupted.  It likewise shows hybrid creatures and a half painted picture on the back of the wall.  The picture is of the same holographic woman sphere, but her arms are computers, and they are reaching out to embrace a giant computer screen.  Under it is written, "EVE Loves The Computer!"

To your right is an access door, the closest thing to a security hatch you see around here.  There are no apparent locks on the door, but there is yellow ribbon taping across the door that says:  "UNDER CONSTRUCTION: DO NOT ENTER BY ORDER OF EVE!"

OOC: Previously, you went through the access door and found Marv-N there.  He was using the Under Construction sign to keep EVE's minions out.

Now, with Marv-N leading the way, he takes you through the unfinished display.  There is a dimly lit corridor beyond, and he starts taking you that way.  "This is a shortcut to EVE's mainframe facility.  I haven't been through here in awhile, though, because of, well, all the death and destruction."

He stops with you in tow as you exit onto a landing about 30 feet high.  "Oh, no," he says.

You look down.  You have entered some sort of production facility, and this room is a giant warehouse.  Boxes and robot parts fill shelves that line the room.  To your right, there is an assembly line with five robots making things.  But they aren't exactly robots.  They have various plant appendages and animal parts attached--part of EVE's crazy plan.  There are three YELLOW clearance clones tied nearby.  Obviously, they are next to be experimented on and grafted to whatever insane project the robots are tasked with creating.

If you dodge that area and follow the shelving area to the left, there are no robots, but there are security cameras and a turret.

Whichever way you decide to go, there is a door at the far end of the giant room that Marv-N says you must exit.

Overhead, you hear the soothing voice of EVE over the intercom state:  "Real servants of the Computer drink EVE's oil, and they love it."

" Team Commander? Assembly bots or armed turret?" Cop asks, once again setting the multi-corder on automatic and un-holstering his laser pistol.

Vilfred counts all of the security cameras. "Let's go along the shelving area," she says. "Try to stay out of view as much as you can."

Re: The EVE Complex - 3 (EVE)

You follow Vilfred to the aisle with the security cameras.  You find that there are five total cameras:

Two cameras are at eye level about 20 feet ahead of you, one on each side of the aisle.  Two cameras are mounted near the ceiling (30 feet high) about 20 feet beyond that.  A ladder leads up to them on each side of the aisle.

Finally, there is one camera in the far left corner about 80 feet ahead of you.  It is about 15 feet off the ground.  No ladder leads up to it, but there are precariously stacked boxes that can be climbed.

There is only one turret.  It faces toward the floor and is straight ahead down the aisle.

All cameras are rotating slowly.  OOC: You will have to complete stealth rolls of whatever type apply to your moves.  See here at msg 2: link to a message in "Paranoia: They Really Are All Out to Get You"

As you ponder your options, a rat runs into the center of the aisle.  A high level camera beeps red three times over the course of two seconds.  All five turrets then train directly on the rat in the next second.  It takes one more second for the turret to snap to attention and fire.  The rat disintegrates into a burnt carcass.  For some reason, the smell of roasted rat makes you hungry.  The turret turns down, and a small recharging light takes about two seconds to recharge the turret.

In other words:
4 seconds between the time one camera sees you and the turret fires.
2 seconds for the turret to recharge after firing.

Good luck...

Re: The EVE Complex - 3 (EVE)

Gene steps up to the edge of the aisle, still out of sight of the cameras, and throw something lightly into the middle of the aisle to see how the cameras and turret will react.

As Gene does that, Vilfred moves toward the nearest camera -- and hopefully disables it.

Re: The EVE Complex - 3 (EVE)

Gene throws a robot part into the center of the aisle.  The movement attracts the cameras, but only for a split second.  They seem to be able to detect whether something is a harmless robot or a clone threat.

Vilfred approaches the camera but is spotted!  The camera trains on her, as do the others.  She jumps back out of sight again in a record 2 seconds, realizing it will take some skills and stealth to reach the cameras.

Rolls failed.
