Re: The Long Night

Bernhard nods, and looks around at the little group,"I don't know everyones capabilities yet, but I do know what Miricada, Samuels and I can do. I think we can head out and hunt the game you've indicated, collect as much meat as we can. I would like the recon team to go back out and follow those tracks, find out where they lead, and if they meet up with anyone else. Have someone who knows Polish take out the locals and harvest as much as they can. Most of them it sounds like are farmers, they should be pretty good at it. Explain to them we will take them home if they help us. I think tomorrow more of the same, and find out if any good parts are left at the junkyard." He looks around to see what the response is, then looks over at where Zhukov is sitting, and in his best Russian,"You, with me, we go hunt now." He points to himself and the big Russian as he says it. "Miricada! Samuels! We got a mission, grab your gear and be ready to head out in 5 mikes. Marcus I would like you to go with whomever takes the locals out, provide some overwatch for them, keep them safe." Bernhard looks to Kett now,"You know the people with you better than I do, pick the details and get them moving."

Bernhard only waits a moment for any responses before he gets his gear and gets ready to head out.

Marcus twists his head from side to side working out the muscle kinks. Addressing his former PL, "Roger sir" with a bit of resignation and disappointment in his voice possibly because we wants to do more but knows he's hurting.  Standing from his corner he walks over to 2LT Donnachaidh and inquires, "They going to work?" gesturing to the locals.

Re: The Long Night

Winters gathers that the locals are farmer-types and they live in a commune somewhere else. He passes on whatever information he could get from Don to Lt Ashton.

Winters takes a moment to grab a bite before making his way back to Lt Ashton. He waits patiently for the next set of orders or mission.  In the meantime he brushes off his SAW and checks his equipment again.

Zhukov looks up from his resting spot and nods.  He stands, hefting his RPK.

He hopes idly that the American isn't planning an hauling him away from the rest of the crew and shooting him, but looks upon the possibility with resignation.  If that's what the Major was up to, Zhukov would at least make sure that he spent all the RPK ammo first.

It's possible, he decides, that they merely want someone alone who speaks Russian, or perhaps the Major wants the additional firepower.  Need or skullduggery, it was better than sitting around.  He falls in with the rest of the group.

Hearing his name called out and finally given something to do Jared quickly grabs his gear but sluggishly made his way over to the gathering point.  The trials of the past days still showed on his face and it was clear that he could benefit from another day's rest but such was the life of a marine...

Placing his pack on the ground Jared wipes the sweat from his face.

"So, what are we up to now, sir?"

Bernhard looks at the assmbled hunting party,"Leave all rucks here, we travel light, weapon, ammo and grenades only. Damn, I'm not thinking right yet. Some of those horses from our captors had pack saddles didn't they? We can take 2 of them with us, to carry the meat back. Make the load that much lighter. Anyone here good with animals?" Bernhard turns his attention to everyone, not just the hunting party,"Anyone here good with horses? We might need a bit of help loading them."

Re: The Long Night

Cam glanced toward Dave, listening to what she could pick up of the orders.  Tanya’s reply brought on an expression of puzzled curiosity.  She turned her attention to Guido again in askance as the Major started pointing toward the horses, and asked quietly. “We go again?”, Her English slipped away as she went to Danish. [Private to Staff Sgt Dave Guido: “Tell him I am assuming that the tracks are from escaped slavers.. And they could be heading to make contact with buyers or some more of their gang. Probably within a day’s travel.  We shouldn’t stay here long, as there are Marauders that operated between here and Lodz. How far out does he want us to go after these tracks?”  OOC: Cam isn’t a Traditional officer. Judging from her background I’m surprised she’s an officer at all.  Circumstance would have it that she is though. She’s more like a shrink/armchair-strategist survival-nut with minor military training in SCUBA. Described as some sort of militia freedom fighter for Denmark, who happened to end up in eer Poland…  <.<    ]

I'd like to find the biggest animals we can if possible. Cows, if we can, something somewhat used to humans, so it is easier to get close for a definate kill shot."

"Sir, you can't have Gallin, she's far to important and needed here for the wounded and vehicles. She's our best medic and our only mechanic."
"I suggest that you take Sergeant Major Brown out with you, he's far more expendable,"
Kett winked. "That and the fact he's probably our best shot with any sort of weapon qualify him for the job."

"I was thinking we needed someone to help with the horses. Since we are just using them as pack animals they shouldn't cause us too much trouble. If they do we will probably make them supper. Brown should be a good addition, he can take the place of Gallin as the horse handler at the tail of the line."

Re: The Long Night

Hearing his name being thrown about Brown looks to make sure all the survivors are comfortable before going to hear what is being said.

Nodding his head in agreement with most of the conversation his eyes narrow at the mention of him being in charge of the pack animals.

"Sir, if I may interject.  I am a pretty damn good shot with a rifle and I'm not to shabby at foraging either.  I think it might be more benficial to have me out front."

Looking at the gathered group his eyes settle on the weary looking Samuels.  "Perhaps Sargeant Samuels would be a better person to watch over the animals.  It would give him a bit of a chance to rest up.  Just an observation sir and of course I'll do as ordered."

OOC:  Jared, not trying to place your character in a bad spot but it seemed like a better move.  Nothing personal!

Michelle looks over at Smith as he mentiones he has medical skills and a great sigh of relief crosses her face. "Excellent! Your hired. everyone is pretty much stable for now, but need checking every hour or so. you can help me get through that faster so I can concentrate on fixing our rides out of here." SHe then looks to Finnigan, and raises an eyebrow. "Horses are too useful to eat, sir. I'd have a mighty beef about it if i had to shoot and eat a horse, unless I was starving to death. And even then, I'd rather fish." from the last statement you get the idea Michelle doesn't like fish much at all.

Re: The Long Night

Lieutenant Ashton finally nodded,  mostly to herself, then Moved back outside calling out Winters’ name. It was only mid-day and they could cover some ground, so she expected to be able to do some tracking for a while yet before it got too dark.  Allowing them to grab something light to eat and some water first, Cam  would then address them as a whole.

“Dave Point, Tanya Back.. All same place..”, Having indicated that she wished to travel in the same order that they had previously.  Her gaze trailed over to where the others were taking up the horses, a thoughtful frown on her hips before she unsung her rifle, and (if they were mustered) moved on out.  The break had bought her a little more time, and she stared over at the horizon.  With another glance back, she hoped things would go well beneath the churning smoke off the funeral pyres, a silent prayer sent to the lost on the wind..

Her thoughts returned to the road ahead, and the possibilities. The prospects  if she listened only to her gut feeling weren’t too good. Sure she had made several unsubstantiated assumptions, but then sometimes is was best to expect the worst and hope for the better. She’d had experience enough there anyway.

"Roger that, Ma'am," Tanya replied to Cam's order to stay back as the 'Six Man' on their patrol again.  She makes sure that her canteens are full and that there is a minimal rattle on her gear before they move out.  He thoughts travel off just after they leave camp to what a beautiful contryside this used to be here in Poland.  Now, famine, marauders, and and radioactivity are just some of the things that are running rampant all over the place.  Her thoughts go back to Charlton Heston's rantings in one of the Planet of the Apes movies when he sees the Statue of Liberty burried in beach sand before her mind becomes clear again and her focus returns.

At Brown's words Jared could feel his "feathers ruffle".  It was a simple truth but the pride that had been ingrained in him as a marine wouldn't accept the fact that he was too weak to do much more than lead horses around.

Still the Major had agreed and so he accepted it with a grumbled, "Aye, sir..."

With a final defiant glare in Brown's direction Jared went to look after the horses.

OOC:  Not a problem, just expect Jared not to like you very much! ;)

"Yes sir!"

With that Brown begins to setoff heading for the most likely place to find food, be it fruit and berries or something a little more tastier like deer hopefully.

Unslinging his AK with a disdainful glance Brown shakes his head.  It wasn't exactly the most suitable weapon for hunting but it was all he had so it would have to do.
