Re: Brother Galen and Sidi

She flounced into the scooling room with a pout on her face, because she'd been having fun playing with the kittens in the stables when time for her lessons came around. She hadn't wanted to come right then, but she knew Galen would be disappointed in her if she was late. She flopped on the cushion by the table where the scrolls were and looked sulky. So, where was Brother Galen anyway?

So, where was Brother Galen anyway?

Brother Galen watched his royal pupil from just outside the door.  She seemed restless and unlikely to be interested in the lesson he had planned on ancient Arnish history. He looked at her dirty knees, hair askew and a stray piece of straw hanging from her rumpled clothes.  It was obvious she'd been playing among the livestock again. Shaking his head he walked quietly into the room, his orange robes rustling quietly as he moved with graceful, unhurried strides.

"Greetings your royal Highness, are you ready to begin?" He asked, knowing she was not, but patient enough to wait on her response.

Re: Brother Galen and Sidi

She saw her friend and mentor enter and tried to settle down. She smiled at her friend, and tried honestly to be a good girl...she really didn't try to get into trouble, it just happened. She didn't tell him how she was getting lessons in unladylike activities. She hid her blistered hands so he couldn't see them.

"Yes Brother Galen. I am ready. What do we learn about today? Art? Music? ...history?"

She didn't really like memorizing dates and boring details, but Brother Galen could really tell the stories so well, she enjoyed them emensely.

Re: Brother Galen and Sidi

Sitting down cross-legged across from Sidi, Brother Galen smiled as he gazed into her eyes with seemingly infinite calm. A smile curved the corners of his mouth, crinkling the smooth olive skin around his almond eyes. Folding his hands in his lap, he looked down at the ancient scrolls, spread out on the desk, his breathing soft and constant.
"I had planned on a lesson about the founding of the Empire, the eariest days, but it can wait I think. We might do something different today, little Emperess, if you would like? First however, I am most curious to know...how are the new kittens   in the stables faring?"

She lit up like a new sun when he asked about the kittens, because she loved cats, and the kittens were so cute and fun to play with! She wiggled with excitement as she answered his question, and smiled brightly.

"Oh! They are so cute Brother Galen! They are starting to explore now, and pounce each other, though they are still shaky on their legs, and their eyes are still blue! But you can tell they will change soon. I just adore them, they are so precious! I wish I could have one in my room."

Re: Brother Galen and Sidi

Brother Galen listened attentively, his face lighting up with unabashed joy as the young Empress described the kittens in such detail that there was no doubt in him how much she adored them. It was wrong to deny her such simple pleasures and, not for the first time, he found himself questioning the wisdom of her imperial advisors, though he would never dare to speak such treason aloud.  In spite of everything they might say, their professions of concern for Sidi's 'well being', the most dangerous things in all her realm, in Galen's opinion, were her advisors.
"Well, he mused. "I have been rather concerned about the number of rats I have seen here at the monastery.  I think it might be wise to adopt a few cats in order to keep the vermin to a minimum. IF you tell me what is preoccuping you today and was important enough that you would be late for my class."

She gave him a wry grimace, knowing she wouldn't have gotten away with hiding things from her friend and mentor. She sighed softly and laid her closed fists on the table.
"I was practicing at the salley. I talked...er...taunted the General into teaching me how to defend myself."

She tried to look contrite but wasn't really ashamed she'd got the General to teach her. She'd tried to get her advisors to allow her to be taught self defense before, but they'd been horrified.

Re: Brother Galen and Sidi

Raising an eyebrow, the monk regarded Sidi with a stern look. He knew her advisors would be beside themselves if they knew. She kept her young hands closed, he was certain, to hide the blisters that had probably begun to form.  Brother Galen tried to keep from laughing as he imagined Minister Aquintus face should he happen to see Sidi sporting the calluses that were the mark of the common soldier.
Nodding sagely, Galen replies. "Well, it is a reasonable desire to wish to defend yourself, and speaks well for your sharp mind, my dear Empress. I have not seen you training, and I shall say exactly that should anyone inquire, PROVIDED that you can answer a simple question for me."
Folding his hands and closing his eyes for a moment, he composed his thoughts then looked to her with that intense expression she knew well.  Clearing his throat he spoke softly:
"You are on the road one day, your gladius by your side, when you are set upon by a ragged man with an equally ragged spear. He has the appearance of a man half starved and desperate; you are certain you can best him easily.  The man demands your purse of gold and silver or he will attack without quarter, shaking his spear in your direction to emphasize his intentions. What action do you take to deal with the man?"
Brother Galen grew silent, steepling his fingers and gazed intently at his pupil, awaiting her reply.

"Well, of course, if he's starving...I'd offer him my food and my water or whatever I had on me if he'd put down his weapon. And if he did that, I'd give him some money and offer him a job of some sort...IF he put down his weapon. I still wouldn't trust him very far, but I would try to help him. Only if he wouldn't listen, wouldn't put away his sword would I offer him harm, or defend myself. I do not see myself as a warrior Brother Galen. I want to be a wise leader, not a rash one."

She looked up at Galen to see what his reaction would be.

Re: Brother Galen and Sidi

The delighted monk tried very very hard to keep from showing his pleasure at her reply, but he simply couldn't help himself and, after a moment, a broad grin stretched across his handsome features. His head inclined towards her as he bowed, after the manner of his people to one who was respected.
"You ARE wise, young Empress, wise beyond your young years. I know men three times your age who could not have answered that simple question as you have. I will say nothing of your training. As well, there may come a time when you are without a weapon and in peril. It might be wise if you know how to defend yourself without weapons as well as with them. Perhaps, when you come to see our Temple's new pets, you may accidently overhear such teachings or even see them being performed.  Who is to say what knowledge you might acquire without my knowing? You are, after all, my BEST pupil." He winked at Sidi and smiled, his almond shaped eyes crinkling at the corners.
" I believe that is all the time we have today for your lesson, Empress.  It has been a privilege, as always to be a part of your instruction. I look forward to seeing you again as soon as time permits." Getting down on his knees, he hugged her tight, sad as always, that she had to go, but knowing it was as it must be. He kept their parting formal though no less sincere, he truly loved her as much as he was allowed to. He promptly reminded himself that she was almost always watched by someone, even here at the Temple her guard was not very far away. "Namaste your Royal Highness,"he said smiling to her.

She impulsively grabbed Galen in a mighty hug back, for she loved her mentor as much as she would have loved her own father had he still been alive. Galen was the one true friend she had who she felt loved her for herself and not because of the power she had, or what advantage they might get from her.

"I love you Brother Galen! You are my one true friend here in the Palace! Promise you will always be my friend?"

Brother Galen surprise quickly turns to joy as Sidi wraps her arms around his neck. Gently he enfolds her in his own muscular arms, sleeves sliding down to his elbows and snuggles with the Empress, taking the moment to let her know that he loves her like a daughter. Hearing her earnest whispered words he responds softly so that only she can hear his heartfelt reply.
"I love you, Sidi, with my whole being, body, mind, and spirit. You are the daughter of my heart and I am honoured to call myself your teacher and friend. I shall love you all my life and my friendship and strength will always be yours."
With a final snuggle he reluctantly releases her and smiles reassuringly. "I look forward to seeing you tomorrow, Your Royal Highness.  Don't be late." he adds with a wink.

Re: Brother Galen and Sidi

Sidi left the monastery with a thoughtful expression upon her face. She marched quite deliberately toward the palace. It was almost time for the Public Court, so she had to hurry to dress for that.

She entered the palace and hurried toward her quarters, followed by her ever present guards and guardians. Once inside, she dismissed her advisors and had her servants help her bathe and dress, then sat down for a brief meal. After eating, she allowed her Official Robes to be placed upon her shoulders, took her minor septor then headed toward the Massive hall.

She was surrounded by advisors and servants as soon as she left her quarters. Sometimes she felt like a parade followed her almost everywhere. She sighed heavily as they opened the massive ironclad wooden doors before sweeping into the room taking a seat upon the throne upon the dias there.

Re: Brother Galen and Sidi

The Temple of Enduring Truth, with its distinctive oriental style, stood like a symbol of serenity as Crow and his escort walked through the well tended monastery grounds, along the cobbled pathway that lead to the impressive main sanctuary. A set of steep, narrow steps climbed up to the ornate main doors, warded on either side by ferocious looking statues that seemed to be a cross between a roaring tiger and a loyal hound. Sitting outside on the top steps, a lone, middle-aged monk in safron robes sits cross-legged, playing plaintively upon a long bamboo flute. As the pair approach the sitting monk, he calmly removes the flute from his lips and places it lovingly in his lap. Then he looks up to the novice and his companion Crow, and a huge smiles spreads across his face.
"Happily your path has lead you back, young novice, and we rejoice at your return. I see also that you have found a most curious wanderer to share your journey."
Turning his bright almond eyes towards the stranger, his enthusiastic smile never dimming. "You are welcome here, Wandering Crow. There is no evil in this place, unless a man bears it with him when he enters, so you may be at peace. What strange fortune brings you to our temple?"

Re: Brother Galen and Sidi

Crow's eyes wandered the temple grounds, taking in the sight of the well tended and peaceful scenes.  He already felt at peace once he stepped into these grounds as though his life was no longer in danger.  His ears picked up the distinct melody of a long bamboo flute and his mind wandered for a bit as he walked up the steps, following closely behind the novice monk.

"Hello to you too... Brother Galen, is it?  Thank you for welcoming here," Crow returned the smile and bowed at the waist with his right fist against his left palm.  With a goofy smile on his face, he said, "I can tell because I feel at peace already.  Still... nothing is without evil just like nothing is without good.  It's simply a matter of which is the more dominant force."

Finding it hard to converse with someone sitting down, Crow dropped down to sit on the step just below the one Brother Galen was sitting on.

"Anyways... I was arrested for not having a job, but Empress Sidi decided to give me a job as a bard," Crow explained in an enthusiastic manner.  "She asked me accompany the caravan to Valkandis and to record everything that happens on the trip... so she sent me to learn how to do this from you."

Re: Brother Galen and Sidi

Brother Galen listens attentively as Crow briefly relates his story. The novice monk looked as if he would interrupt at Crow's addressing the Grand Master so simply, but a meaningful glance was enough to cause the novice to swallow any protest. In truth, though he was the temple Grand Master and the head of the order, he disliked titles and preferred to be addressed simply as brother, or Master when the need arose. Inclining his head towards the white robed novice, Brother Galen bows slightly, his hand together, adressing him quietly.
"I am grateful for your service, young initiate, you may go and join your novice brethren in prayer." He watched for a moment as the young monk bowed deeply to him, and then to Crow, before obediently continuing on up the steps to the temple doors and out of sight. Slowly, his movements graceful and unhurried, Brother Galen's piercing soft brown eyes regarded Crow once again.
"You have told me a small part of your tale, Wandering Crow, at least the part that you wish me to know.  It will be my honour to instruct you in the ancient bardic arts, as the Empress wishes, though it is clear to me that you have the heart of a warrior.  There is a steel in your glance that belies the guise of a carefree traveller. You are no stranger to death, that much is certain. I wonder if you can be comfortable with a lyre in hand, when your spirit calls out for a sword?"
Steepling his fingers to his lips, his expression one of deep thought, he finally asks, "Are you familiar with Arnish letters, reading and writing them? Can you play any instruments?"

"I'm very grateful to have you teach me the bardic ways.  As for why I'm a bard instead of a warrior, I have no right to call myself a warrior while my training is incomplete," Crow replied with a crooked smile.  His thoughts flashed back to the image of late leader of his mercenary group.  A second later and his thoughts returned to focus.  "In truth, my spirit calls out for two swords... and a 7-string zither... or a guqin as it's commonly called.  Do you know of it?"

Re: Brother Galen and Sidi

Galen listens as Crow answers, then nods thoughtfully. "I am familiar with the instrument known as the guqin, young wanderer. It is much played in my homelands and each of the seven strings carries a meaning, as do all the the materials from which it is traditionally fashioned. As for the two sword style, the ni-to-ken style, this too is known to me, though I do not have the time needed to teach such to you, nor would I without the Empress consent of course."  He smiled then, as if some fair memory flickered through his mind.
"Come, I shall teach you the Arnish letters, and proper methods of recollection.  We have little enough time and much to learn." Standing up, he walks down the stone steps and off the the east, leading the way behind the temple to an elaborate garden. Ancient blossoming cherry trees stood like sentinels surrounding a rainbow of wildflowers overflowing onto the simple cobbled pathways. An intricately carved fountain of grey stone nestled in the heart of this paradise. The statue at its center was of a kneeling boy and girl, from their hand the water gently flowed into the stone basin. Around the base were deeply etched letters.
Looking over his shoulder to see if Crow is following he nods approvingly and adds. "Your journey, as  warrior, a poet, or a man, is never complete. To know this is the beginning of wisdom, Wandering Crow."

Re: Brother Galen and Sidi

"Though you may had heard of the two-sword style, the kind I'm thinking of isn't exactly very common practice... anywhere.  Have you heard of a man who could wield two Zweihanders at the same time?" Crow, of course, was referring to the leader of the mercenary team.  Though unheard of, the merc leader was able to handle the two large swords with relative ease.  Of course, Crow never intended to perform such a feat, but it was nice to think about.

As they walked down the stone steps and off to the east, Crow's eyes were drawn toward the water fountain and the statues upon it.  He stared at the letters at the base of the fountain for a moment before turning his attention back toward Brother Galen.

"No need to keep calling me Wandering Crow.  Crow's just fine, you know," Crow grinned while following Galen.  "Of course a journey doesn't end... but it can start.  That begs the question... does a bird's journey begin after leaving the nest or when it looks out toward the sky?"

Re: Brother Galen and Sidi

Galen's brow wrinkles at Crow's question. "Such a warrior leaves himself dangerously off balance in chosing to wield such awkward weapons. Dangerous he may be, but he will soon tire and then the patient foe can finish him easily. I find all of your peoples' weapons cumbersome, however. Your Zweihander or two-handed sword, is a most clumbsy thing when compared to the graceful No-dachi of my people. Yet in the end, it matters not.  For the weapon is not what is truly important, but rather the warrior who wields it.  A true warrior is perilous to his enemies, even if he wields no weapons at all."

As they enter the garden, Brother Galen sits down on the stone bench beside the fountain.  Looking over to Crow he responds.  "Yet you ARE a wanderer, young Crow.  You are a man who wanders in search of himself.  When you realize that you seek answers in the wrong place, then perhaps your wandering will end.  As for the baby bird, what matters is not when the journey begins, but that it has. And so should we, if we are to accomplish what the Empress has commanded. When we are done you shall read to me what the message is upon the fountain.  Then we shall know it is time for you to go."  From his worn leather satchel, Brother Galen removes a tablet and stylus.
"In the Arnish tongue the letters begin thusly," he says gently as he draws upon the tablet with patient, graceful strokes.

"Mm-hmm..." Crow nodded along as he learnt the letters of the Arnish tongue.  He carefully watched Brother Galen's careful brush strokes as his thoughts went toward the message upon the base of the fountain.  He was pretty sure he had already seen such a message before, but was unable to recall when and where.  Now that he had seen it again, he was curious as to what it said.  Even if his final test were not the fountain's message, he would had pursued its meaning, anyway.

Though he had not learnt how to write in the Arnish language, he learnt enough of the Thestrian language to read their words with some struggle.  He had meant to learn the Arnish and Valkandish written languages, but simply could not find someone who would teach him.  Now that he had the chance, he wasn't going to let the opportunity pass him by.

Re: Brother Galen and Sidi

With infinite patience, Master Galen instructs the young man, gently encouraging him.  In truth, Galen is impressed by how eager and how sharp Crow can be, noting how easily he seems to master the basic concepts.  It is eminently clear to the wise monk that Crow is much more than a simple vagabond.  What strange pathways had brought him to this monastery?  He appears physically in good shape and has considerably more wits about him than he allows most to see.  Hiding his talents, like a butterfly still waiting in its chrysalis, or the morning sun lost amid the cloudy sky. And for what purpose, who could say?  Perhaps the journey to Valkandis might bring him the inner peace that had eluded him. Brother Galen hoped it would be so.
Carefully he worked, through the afternoon hours and well into the evening, practicing each phrase, one by one, until the Master was certain that Crow understood.  He was teaching Crow much more than the use of Arnish speech.  He was showing the young man how to observe as well, showing him how to perceive truth, to ascertain what was important and worth recording, as well as how it was done.  The true path of a scholar and poet that Galen knew so very well.

"See the cuckoo, there in the branches of the hazel tree?  AVUS, bird, AVISINUS, little bird. ARBUS, tree. ARBISINUS, little tree or shrub..."

Nodding approvingly as Crow spotted the grey cuckoo with the black feathered head.  He was observant and so teaching him how to look was a simple matter of training him to differentiate between what mattered and what did not.  Brother Galen was most pleased with his progress in this regard. One thing was for sure, Crow was wary, vigilant, as if he feared to miss something, as if he needed to be always on guard.
At last, as they paused for a break of sweet pears, hard cheese, and fresh bread, along with some cool water to help it down, the teacher asked Crow directly:

"Look carefully now, at the writing on the fountain, tell me what do you see, Crow the Wanderer?"

Re: Brother Galen and Sidi

Crow worked enthusiastically on learning the Arnish language and found it quite easy for him to master.  Of course, he credited the ease of the learning experience to the teachings of Brother Galen.  Most of the knowledge and skills he obtained were either stolen or taught by extremely strict teachers.  This kind of situation was a nice change of pace.  When the time came to read the fountain's message, he decided not to disappoint his teacher.

"Ah..." For a split second, Crow's eyes went wide as soon as he read the words on the fountain.  Closing his eyes, he chuckled silently to himself as carefully translated the message word by word to be sure he was not mistaken.  Opening his eyes again, he enthusiastically read out the message on the fountain, "No one can see their reflection in running water.  It is only in still water that we can truly see."

Unable to hide his smile, Brother Galen nodded to the eager young man.  "It is exactly so, words of great wisdom that you may take with you on your journey, Crow the Bard.  You have been a most adept student, there is much more I could teach you, but, if that is to be, it must wait for another day.  You have answered my riddle and so, it is time for you to depart."
Galen bows to Crow, his safron robe rustling slightly in the early evening breeze. Straightening up he gives Crow a disarming smile. "I do have a proposition however," he adds.  "Evening is upon us, and there is room in the guest-house if you wish to stay the night.  In the morning I am going to attend the wedding of an old friend, the Lady Sadina.  She is a noblewoman and acquaintance of the Empress herself.  Her Ladyship is betrothed to a pro consul named Lord Talaric.  You are welcome to accompany me, if you wish, I would welcome the company.  Her royal Highness Sidi will undoubtedly attend, if her responsibilities permit. "
Galen turned and began to walk up the path that lead back to the main temple.  "I leave the choice up to you," he offers as he looks back over his shoulder.  The  sun was rapidly setting and the shadows were beginning to gather.  "If you wish to stay I will have one of the novices show you where you may sleep for tonight."

"You are most welcome, young Bard.  I thank you for a pleasant afternoon.  I find teaching to be most fulfilling, but a wise teacher knows that he is only as good as his students.  I will see you in the morning, Crow.  Consider all you have learned and may yet learn tomorrow as well.  May you have peaceful dreams."
Nodding to a nearby white robbed novice, he smiles serenely as the young man approaches and bows with deep respect.
"Nang Li'en, you will show our honoured friend, Crow, to the guest house.  See that he is comfortable and feels welcome."  Bowing once more to both young men, he quietly walks off towards the main temple as the fading sun paints the sky above with broad strokes of crimson, lavender and gold.
Looking shyly at Crow, the novice bows and grins then says in halting Arnish, "I am fortunate to meet you, Crow.  If you will please to follow?" Pivoting on his heel, he leads the wandering bard through the garden and back towards the main complex.  To the east of the great sanctuary there is a small single story building of yellow brick, red tiled roof and a wide, painted red door with a single golden symbol on the front.  On either side of the door are small jade carved statues of strange dragon-like creatures.  At the top of the stairs, Nang Li'en pushes open the doors, revealing a large, single room, with richly decorated carpet and wood carvings on the walls.  Along the western wall are three bamboo sleeping pallets.
"I do hope you will be comfortable here, Crow the Bard," he says humbly.

"Uh... okay!  I'll see you in the morning, then!" Crow called out after Galen before turning his attention on the white robbed novice.  Nodding his head when asked to follow, the two of them made their way through the garden and toward the yellow single storey building.

Looking with amazement at the jade statues, he reached out to touch them... but pulled his hand back when the novice opened the doors.  His attention turned toward the golden symbol on the red painted door before falling upon the room itself.  He looked curiously at the wood carvings on the wall and tried to remember if he knew what they meant.  After a while, he decided to ignore them for now.

"Thank you very much, er... Nang Li'en, right?  I usually sleep outside, so a sleeping pallet's a real treat for me," Crow grinned as he thanked the novice.  "So... about the wedding tomorrow... what are they like?  The Lady Sadina and the Lord Talaric, I mean?"

The novice nods.  "Yes, I am Nang Li'en, thank you honoured Crow, I am happy you like the bed. It is humble, but comfortable.  We like a simple life," he says in halting Arnish.  As he hears Crow's question a puzzled look comes over his youthful features and he  ponders, seeming to search for the right words.
"Lady Sadina is...like the still water.  Beautiful, serene, with a quiet strength...and much hidden beneath the surface.  Grand Master Galen sees her sometimes...they are friends longtime.  Lord Talaric I have not met, but he is...Pro consul...powerful man." He shrugs apologetically.  "I seldom have reason to leave the temple so I do not know so much."
Bowing respectfully, Nang Li'en walks backwards towards the door.  "Sleep well, may you have fortunate dreams." adds the novice.  Pointing to a small bronze bell by the door he searches Crow's face, making sure he undertands.  "I will be...nearby.  If you need things, you ring this bell and I bring what you need, okay?"

"Thank you very much.  May you have fortunate dreams, too," Crow returned the bow in a respectful manner, then decided to turn in for the night.  Choosing the  bamboo pallet farthest from the door, he sat down upon and as soon as Nang Li'en turned to leave, he called out, "See you in the morning, Nang Li'en!"

With that, he lied down and went to sleep.

Bounding into the room, the raccoon glanced about in case anyone else was inside.  Once the coast was clear, the small critter made his way to where Crow was sleeping.  Curling up into a ball within the young bard's bag, the racoon closed his eyes to the morning sunlight and went to sleep.

"Yay!  It's morning!" Crow exclaimed as he suddenly sat up with his arms stretched out.  Rubbing his eyes for a bit, he glanced around while trying to remember where he was.  Once his memory clicked in, he lied back down on the pallet and stared up at the ceiling.  "Meh... so I'm a bard now, huh?  I wonder... is this really okay...?  Ah well, I'll think about it later."

With a grin on his face, Crow got up off the pallet and made his way out of the guest house.  The morning sun blinded him for a couple seconds, but he shrugged off the light and continued on his way.

"Meow..."

"Eh?" Crow blinked as he looked down and at his feet was a small kitten.  Crouching down, the young bard tilted his head and stared at the little critter.  He fished around in his pockets and pulled out small morsels of fish from his rations and placed them in front of the kitten.  After that, he got up and walked around only to notice the kitten following him.  Sighing, he turned around and picked up it up before looking around to see if he could find out where it came from.

"Good morning to you too, Nang Li'en.  This little guy is no trouble at all, though I would like to know where the litter is so I could drop him off," Crow replied cheerfully while still holding the kitten in his arms.  At the mention of food, the young bard's stomach started rumbling ferociously.  Chuckling a little in embarrassment, he added, "Excuse me, but I was hoping to join the other residents of this temple for breakfast.  I don't suppose that will happening though, will it?  Well... looks delicious.  Thanks for bringing it to me."

Holding out his hands, he offered the big steaming bowl of noodles and vegetables.  "We can trade," he added with a light hearted laugh.

"Sounds like a good idea.  Maybe I can go with you to see the rest of the litter?"    Nang L'ien smiles, obviously pleased and announces with pride, "I was the one, who makes the noodles friend Crow."  The novice pets the purring kitten, then bows to the newly made bard.
"The garden is this way, Crow.  Master Galen waits for you, come this way please?"  He begins to walk eagerly towards the great garden, his  white robe flapping around his legs in the early morning breeze.  Birds of many kinds were warbling in the varied trees of the garden, and thousands of bright flowers smiled in the growing sunshine.  It promised to be a very pleasant day, perfect for a noble wedding in fact.
Nang Li'en beamed as he saw Brother Galen, sitting on the the edge of an ancient stone bridge that arches over a tranquil pond in the eastern portion of the garden. He had a long handled brush in hand, painting upon a silken canvas that stretched between two long boards.  Defly the Grand Master drew the hoary willow trees overhanging this area of the garden.  He watched as the wind made ripples across the water, adding a few to his painting with the flick of his brush.  Without turning around he acknowledged the novice and Crow's presence in a cheerful voice.
"Good morning to you both.  I hope that you slept well?  The sun floats  above the mountains in the east and the day begins.  Are you ready for the journey?"

"Brother Galen!  Good morning!  I slept very well, in fact.  Thank you for asking!" Crow exclaimed happily as soon as he caught sight of Galen.  Quickly approaching his new mentor, his eyes darted toward the unfinished painting.  He was amazed at the detail and how similar it looked to the real thing.  It was one thing to just copy the image of the magnificent scenery, but it was another thing entirely to have the painting bring out even a portion of the original emtion.  Taking his mind off the painting for now, he answered cheerfully, "Ready to go and keep going till the sun drops down behind the western... er... what's to the west again?  More mountains?"

Crow blinked as he turned toward the East, even though he was supposed to face West.  Bringing a hand up to cover his eyes, he peered off into the distance to see what was to the West... er... East... wait... West?

Grand Master Galen laughs, a rich, honest, rolling laugh as Crow's head swivels back and forth in confusion.  "What is East, what is West?  The mountains in the East are the famed Septimus Altius, the famous Seven Peaks.  To the West is a broad plain and the furious river Rhonnus, which cuts a deep channel through the Valley of Milanthar, after which the city is named.  Our way, this morning, however, lies to the north west, and we had best begin, for the journey that is never begun is the one that takes the longest to complete."
"Let us now to Lady Sadina's, and you shall meet my dear friend.  Her hospitality is famed throughout Milath, young bard.  It might be wise, however, if your pet remained here.  Accompany us as well please, Nang Li'en."
With that he began to stride leisurely towards the Temple Gate.

Re: Brother Galen and Crow

The temple Grand Master sat on a hewn stone bench in the middle of the garden and contemplated the ancient sugi tree who's sprawling branches swayed in the early morning breeze.  Dawn was still hours away, the stars still danced and winked like a hundred thousand fireflies whirling above.  The moon shone brightly, a faint halo surrounding her promised rain to come.  Silently, Brother Galen raised his hands skywards, breathing deeply of the floral scented spring air, then exhaling gently.  Slowly he allowed the sorrow deep within him to be released to the heavens.
As he let his disappointment pass, he felt the peace of the night descend upon him and he slowly calmed, the visions of Anu and Cartallindo's duel fading into the  background, his tears drying at last.  Anu had been his favourite pupil, once upon a time and his accomplishments had always been a source of pride for Galen.  Perhaps, after Anu returned from his trip, Brother Galen would sit down with him and they could talk.  And, in spite of the reasons for the battle, one thing the monk had to admit.  Anu had fought well, his technique was without flaw.  Knowing this made Galen reluctantly smile, if only for a moment.
Perhaps he might have the chance to help Crow find his path.  Brother Galen wondered about the relationship between Crow and Motoko though.  Something about the female Ikoshan kensai troubled him deeply.  As the wind rustled his safron robes, he looked out to towards the north and wondered if the young bard and his warrior companion would come...

Re: Brother Galen and Crow

"Is this the place, Crow?" Motoko asked as she looked about the temple in wonderment.  It wasn't the first time that she had been to a temple, but she was always impressed by statues and other kinds of designs of historical importance no matter how many times she saw them.  Now that she thought about it, it had really been quite a while since she last visited a temple and paid her respects.  The last time she did was the day before she first left on her journey.  As she followed along behind Crow, she closed her eyes and allowed her other senses experience the sacred environment.

The steps beneathe her feet were foreign to her, of course, but reminded her so well of the temple steps back home.  Even outside she could pick up the smell of incense burnt every single day.  Her sharp nose also picked up the flowery scent of the garden.  Her ears opened up to the water fountain as she passed it and to the wind as it rustled by.

"Oof!" Motoko bumped into Crow's back as soon as he stopped to greet Galen.  A little embarrassed at herself, she quickly shuffled out from behind Crow to greet Galen properly.  "Grand Master Galen.  Again, thank you for watching over Crow all this time.  Though he is kind-hearted, I know that he can be quite a handful at times as well."

Re: Brother Galen and Crow

With a nod and a sad smile, Brother Galen beckoned them both to him.  He rose from the bench to greet them, then indicated that they should sit on the bench facing this one.  Nearby the fountain burbled and splashed, the waters glittering as they reflected the moonlight cascading down into the fragrant garden.  All around tiny fireflies danced in the air, and locusts buzzed from the safety of the trees.  Lifting up the jar beside him, he offered them both small porcelain bowls that had been decorated with delicate floral patterns.
"It brings so much joy to my heart that you decided to come.  Thank you for humouring this old monk.  Would you like to share some tea?  It is a fair night, and likely your last here in Milath for many months."  After deftly pouring the tea for them (if they accepted) he raises his own bowl and softly speaks.
"May your journey bring you great fortune and great wisdom, and may you find all that you seek." Master Galen lifts the bowl and takes a deep draught, sighing happily.  Nothing was quite so satisfying to him as a cup of fresh brewed tea and a quiet night.  How he wished tonight had been a quieter one.  He had much to consider after the events of the day.  Yet he would not spoil the joy of the moment with such reflections.  He would not so dishonour his young guests, nor waste the opportunity for happiness now.  He watched them as they drank, enjoying their reactions, then stood slowly.

"I have gifts for you both, small tokens of friendship and esteem to take with you on your journies, wherever they might lead." Kneeling he produced two heavily wrapped bundles from under the bench. "It would please me very much if you would accept my modest offerings."  He handed one bundle to each of them then stepped back waiting.

Upon Galen's offer, Crow sat down on the bench and gratefully accepted the porcelain bowl of tea.  He took in the smell of the freshly brewed tea and allowed the scent alone to rejuvenate his mind.  He pressed the bowl against his lips and swallowed the drink all at once.  Bringing the bowl back down again, a beaming smile was plastered across his face.

Crow's attention shifted back up to the grand master as soon as he noticed him stand up again.  His eyes widened at the sight of the wrapped bundles.  As one of the bundles was placed in his hands, he tried to come up with the right words in response to the monk's generosity.  Instead, he decided to open up the bundle first to see what it was before coming up with the proper response.  "Wow... um... thank you, Galen.  I... don't really know what to say..."

Freshly brewed tea... Motoko remembered a time when she had tea with Sanae in the morning after practice.  The training was hard on her as a child, especially to her hands and fingers.  One time, when she was around seven, the hot cup of tea was too painful against the blisters on her fingers so she dropped it... breaking it to pieces.  It was a part of Sanae's favourite tea set.  Motoko was afraid that her Sempai would be angry at her, but Sanae simply smiled, collected the pieces, and fetched another cup, this time with a small piece of cloth.  The young swordswoman gratefully accepted the bowl of tea and sipped it carefully.  Once she was done with it, she closed her eyes and smiled serenely.  "That was delicious, Brother Galen... I mean... Grand Master.  Thank you."

Her eyes flickered back open once she realized that Galen was standing up again.  She had a look of puzzlement at the sight of the two bundles and wondered what they were for.  She didn't really know what to say after Galen explained that they were gifts, but she accepted one of them when it was offered to her.  She blinked curiously at the monk, then glanced off to the side to see Crow's reaction.  Following her companion, she unwrapped the bundle to see what was inside.

Re: Brother Galen and Crow

Anu entered the Temple kneeling before a modest shrine speaking an ancient prayer for peace and harmony that was eluding him this night. It was simple an enemy defeated the honor of the Empress upheld." Why does peace elude me? Have I not fought well, did I not do as honor required?"

The question was not for the gods but to himself, he knew he had done as honor and protocol decreed, but the feeling of a great and unforgivable mistake haunted him, was it possible that the gods had not judged him in the right, had they abandoned both men leaving it to chance or skill to win or lose?

He found his way to the baths, scoured himself with a mixture of herbs and minerals to remove the sweat and dirt of the battle wincing as the bruises objected to any touch. Gathering a bundle of long reeds mixed with fragrant herbs and dipped in opils he found his way to a meditation chamber and kneeled stripping and casting aside his filthy clothing. He began to recite a mantra seeking peace and used the bundle of reeds to flog himself the pain and sting of the herbs and minerals forcing him to focus on the discomfort not the swirling thoughts in his mind.
Pacing his wwords to an acient rythym he scourged himself lightly to center his thoughts and force his mind to forget himself and still itself. Pain of the body easing the pain of his soul as he sought to bring his body into obiedience and his mind to give up the futile thoughts of self, past and future, only when self was defeated and only the present was seen could he hope to center himself.

The practice was not one he felt any pride in but he felt his loss of center required more than simple meditation, and in truth he felt that the self punishment was deserved for the foolish spectacle after the duel. As he sough peace and inflicted a punishment no one would inflict on a captain of the guard he sought the fleeting specter of peace that taunted and eluded him.

Re: Brother Galen and Crow

The Grand Master nodded with approval.  Seeing the Kensai's grateful tears moved him deeply.  He gazed into Motoko's shining eyes and gave her a reassuring smile.  "How long we have known one another matters not, brave warrior in training.  What is important is that our paths have come together, and we are both richer for it.  I believe, Motoko, that this daisho could not be in better hands.  You understand the value of that which you have been given, and that alone, would make you worthy of them.  You do your Sempai great honour by guarding her Imperial Majesty's royal bard.  At least I can help you in this small way, to protect him on his journey.  I will hold you to your promise to take care of Hansho's legacy.  When next we meet I expect to see your daisho and Crow safe."
He heard Crow address him and bowed as Crow thanked him. "You are both most welcome, Crow the Bard.  When you return to this temple, bring me the gift of wisdom, and I shall be well content.  Now, it grows very late, and you will both have to be up early to join the caravan, which leaves at dawn.  Nang Li'en has already prepared the guest house.  Good night to you both, and as my people say: may you have peace in your heart and fortune in your steps.  Namaste."
Brother Galen pressed his folded hands to his forehead, then his mouth, and finally his heart as he bowed, bidding them both good evening.  He knew they would have a very long road ahead and many travails lie before them.  He looked up into the heavens as a few stars winked down through the wisps of cloud veiling the moon.  A trace of sadness lingered in his heart, not because they must say farewell, but because he knew, instinctively that this journey would change them both and he would never see them again as they were now.  Silently he prayed for them.

Anu rose form his meditations returning to the baths and cleansing himself again. Once again He used herbs and oils top treat his many bruises and cuts. His mind had not cleared , and he still bore a heavy wieght on his mind. Never had victory seemed so hollow as defeating a man who fought so well. He wondered the stone halls of the Temple the gardens and unchanging rythyms iof the temple no comfort.
His childhood had been spent in these halls in it he had learned discipline, dedication and to accept and embrace the life before him. Here the collar on his neck and the ownership marks on his flesh had meant nothing, the monks had given him no different treatment thasn the free born and noble. All were equal in, structured sometimes difficult routine of the temple. They had given him dignity,a sense of honor, and a chance to find a path that led further than a nobles stables. now that peace and harmony was lost. Something dark nagged at his heart, something akin to dread.

Re: Brother Galen and Crow

Brother Galen:

"Thank you for wisdom, Brother Galen.  I will be sure to repay you with my own once I get back." Crow bowed as he thanked the Grand Master.  The young bard stood up and as he did, he noticed the trace of sadness through Galen's eyes.  "Good night, Brother Galen.  I'll see you in the morning before we head off to the caravans."

With that, the young bard turned around and headed off to the guest house.

Re: Brother Galen and Crow

"Brother Galen... I... I mean... Grand Master... I believe our meeting was more than just a coincidence.  My Sensei once spoke highly of a monk he met in a temple he described not unlike this one.  It was also in Arn.  I know not if this temple is the very same or if the monk he spoke of was really you, but..." Motoko paused for she was unsure as to why she was telling Galen all this in the first place.  Speaking of it helped calm her tears, though.  "He was known as the Double-Sword Demon-Slayer."

Standing back up again, Motoko placed the swords back in the bundle so that they would be easier to carry.  She gathered them into her arms and held them close to her body.  Even through the clothe she could feel the greatness and worth that the blades represented.  She wasn't carrying ordinary weapons... that much she knew for certain.

"These swords... I will treasure them.  With these swords, I will protect those most important to me, including Crow.  I know not if our paths cross again, but... when they do, we should share a drink together," Motoko smiled before turning around and following Crow to the guest house.  "Good night, Grand Master."

Re: Brother Galen and Crow

Brother Galen listens to all that Motoko says, his eyebrow arching as she mentions the venerable tatsujin.  It had been a very long time since Galen had spoken with the legendary Kensai.  Yet the name of Nibai-ken Oni-kira-sama was known to every Ikoshan, and feared by those who had stood against him.
His technique, the Onikirakenjutsu was exquisite and deadly.  Yet it was very dangerous, not only to his enemies, but often to allies alike.  If Motoko was his student, then that explained much of the anxiousness he had felt since meeting the eager swordswoman.  She had a great trial ahead if she were to master such a perilous jutsu.
He let none of his troubled thoughts slip as she thanked him and promised to protect young Crow.  Smiling greatfully, he nodded to them both as they said their goodbyes and headed off to the guest house.  He was glad he had given her the Hansho blades now.  She would need them more than he had realized.
He walked silently from the garden.  He needed to collect his thoughts and to meditate on the revelations of this evening.

Anu paused and nodded his head slightly.  "Wished to meditate and hoped to gather my wits before departing on my assignments.

The novice monk bowed to Captain Anu and smiled thoughtfully. "Yes, Captain, this is good place for, how is it said?  To find the center.  You are welcome here, long as you wish.  I am sure GrandMaster Galen will approve.  May you find what you seek, and have peaceful dreams.  Namaste."

As Nang Li'en exited the temple quietly, his face lit up in surprise as he saw Master Galen walking up the path.  Quickly he came before the Brother Galen and bowed low.  Keeping his head down, he spoke softly as the Grand Master acknowledged him with a nod.  Whispering, Nang Li'en spoke to his Master of their  guest in the temple.  Brother Galen listened, then bid the novice good night, then made his way to the temple...

Re: Brother Galen and Crow

Anu bowed deeply in honest respect to the Monk, He stood and began to slowly run through an effortless, flowing series of movements his hands held as if he were holding a ball of delicate porcelin between his hands allowing his body to flow and move qith a graceful, relaxed poise as he let his mind empty itself and embrace the quiet serene energy of the Temple. the technique was not one of strenght or power, it required him to relax his body and move freely the kata had no other use than to relax and empty his mind, no master taught it and it came from within.

" No chains bind the soul, except those we place apon them,"
No pain exists except that we choose to feel
No shame, no humiliation except that we chose to feel.
The soul is free, the spirit is free, only the body wears
           chains."

The mantra was not some great revalation of the masters, they were the words of a common servant who worked in the kitchens many long years ago.

The Grand Master bowed in response to his former student and folded his hands inside of his wide sleeves.  Though he watched Anu's graceful motions as he moved through the beginning steps of the T'ai Chi Chuan kat'a, he would not meet the Captain's eyes.  He did note, with a smidgeon of pride, that Anu's technique was exquisite, flowing from one position to the next with ease and fluidity of one long practiced in the ancient art.
"Your are not in harmony, said Brother Galen quietly, his eyes glistening in the candle light.  "Though your mind is focused, your soul is troubled, and so your body betrays your inner conflict for all who know how to see.  Why have you come, Anu?"

A little kitten tagged along after Crow as he left, scampering along chasing his lose tie on his soft boot. When Crow reached the guest house, the kitten scampered up crows leg and back, his sharp little claws leaving tiny scratches all the way! When he's done, he's sitting on Crow's shoulder, purring in his ear, and chewing on a lock of hair, his little eyes bright and shining with bravery and mischief.

Anu slid gracefully into a proper stance and bowed to his Sensei. His eyes were low, his head bowed as he faced the only man he would bow his head to without promting.

" I do not know Sensei," Anu spoke after a moment" I did as I thought i must to fulfill my duty and satisfy the call of honor.
Anu looked up with a pained expression on his face. But in contest with the Man I found I was mistaken, and I feel I have shamed myself and failed my Empress."

How could I have not seen that the Mercanary was more than he seemed.

Grand Master Galen listened silently as Anu replied to him, then shook his head sadly.
"You did what you must do to satisfy the call of honour and your duty to your Empress?  At what point did Her Imperial Majesty suggest that her honour was impugned?  Do you truly believe that She would wish for such petty strife between her own legionaires?  You chose to challenge and fight him Anu, it was your choice to do so, you were not ordered by anyone to defend the Empress' honour.
What is the difference between a fighter and a warrior?  It is simply this:  The fighter seeks to master others, the warrior seeks to master himself.  The one who masters others may be strong, but the one who masters himself is a thousand times stronger.  To allow your emotions to direct your actions is unwise, for that is the path to disharmony.  Your spirit, mind and body should act always as one.  When passion alone governs you, there is discord.  There is a place for emotion, but it must be tempered by reason, Only in this way can the warrior know that his actions are his own.
To fight to protect another or oneself from harm, is right, and so I have always taught you.  I also taught you that to use your martial abilities to threaten or bring harm to another without cause is selfish and vain.  You have a responsibility to use your knowledge to help others, not to bring injury.  Meditate on this truth while you journey to far lands. When you can tell me the true purpose of the Xiaolin warrior, you may then return to this temple."

Bowing to Anu, he turned from him, so that Anu would know he was displeased, and so he would not see the hurt on his face.

Re: Brother Galen and Crow

The words cut deep and true; no sword had ever left such a painful wound. The truth cut quick and left it's mark in the sou.  Anu could not deny these words. And in truth he knew them before they were spoken.  Only his pride had resisted the truth, seeking to justify his loss of control and prideful actions as something rational.

In truth, he had compounded the wrong by seeking to justify it. To make a mistake was one thing but to justify it, to lie to one's self to defend it was a greater error. His pride had grown too large, his acomplishments to numerous, he had not humbled himself or sought to maintain his own internal honesty, in the years since he had left the temple for the barracks. In his success, and the accolades of others, he had began to believe their praise and indulge his pride when he should have been humble. This was no act of simple loss of control it was a symptom of something far worse.
He bowed to Brother Galen's back, offering respect even if it was not seen. He would not return to the temple until he was worthy of his Sensei again.

Brother Galen sat outside, on the spacious monastery porch, sipping from a small porcelain cup, and silently appreciating the morning breeze.  As always, he had come out to greet the sunrise, and then spent an hour meditating.  Now he was simply appreciating the delicious tea Nang Xi had made earlier. It was probably some of her best.

Motoko arrived at the temple, bright and early in the morning.  No time was specified, but she thought it prudent that she dealt with this while the sun had only just risen.

"Brother Galen," The swordswoman greeted the monk at the porch, just as he was finished meditating.  In all probability, if not for this appointment, she probably would be doing something similar right now.  "Good morning.  The Kensai you mentioned last night.  Is she here right now?"

Re: Brother Galen and Crow

Brother Galen looked up as Motoko greeted him.  A smile, like the warm spring sunrise, lit up his smooth features, crinkling the corners of his eyes as they reflected the colours of the early morning sky.  A slight breeze brought the scent of Lan Su and wild cherry to delight the Grand Master and his visitors.  He stood effortlessly and then bowed to Motoko and Mariasha.  He quickly produced two more small porcelain tea cups (though from where is a mystery) and offers them to his friends.

"Will you join me in a cup of tea?  Nang Xi would be pleased to know her most excellent tea is being appreciated by all."

Indicating that he would be happy if they joined him, he sipped from his own cup and looked across the temple court yard silently.  After several long moments he spoke addressed Motoko's question, gazing directly into the swordswoman's eyes with a a look of profound sadness:

"Tenshi no Shi, yes she is here still.  She remains in the Eastern Garden amid the remains of former monks and masters of our temple.  No one has been able to stir her from that place, nor have any who tried returned.  You are most welcome to visit her there; perhaps you can persuade her to unburden herself to you, and in so doing, find peace.  I wish you the luck, brave Kensai."

Re: Brother Galen and Crow

"Thank you," Motoko bowed respectfully to Brother Galen before taking the cup of tea from Petal.  She smiled down at her slave, playfully tussling her hair before taking a sip.  Her eyes popped open as she stared down at the tea.  "You're right, this tea is excellent.  I don't think I've had any this good since I left Oko."

The swordswoman's gaze wandered over toward the Eastern Garden.  That was where she was to find the mysterious Kensai, Tenshi no Shi.  She had no idea what to expect, but she had every intention of fulfilling her promise.

Remains of former monks.  No one who tried returned.

In other words, walking into that garden could mean certain death.

Motoko took a deep breath, finished her tea, then placed the empty cup back into Petal's hands.  She ran her fingers through Petal's hair, relishing the touch one last time.

"Petal, you are to remain here.  Stay out of the Eastern Garden," Motoko sternly growled between her teeth.  She glanced over toward Mariasha and gave her a smile, "Mariasha, could you watch Petal while I'm gone?"

She looked up at the bright blue morning sky.  She stood there for a moment, wondering what else she needed to get out of the way.

"If I'm not back in an hour, find Crow," Motoko said before walking toward the Eastern Garden.  Her left hand rested on the hilt of her blade.  Hopefully, she wouldn't need to draw it... but who was she kidding, really?

(Used with permission, this absolutely beautiful photo from the gallery of Malleni Stock on deviant art.  Please check out this artist's amazing gallery here http://malleni-stock.deviantar...50085/Chinese-Garden).

Through a stone archway, and up a set of broad, flat stone steps, is the entrance to the Eastern Temple Garden.  A high, crystal clear waterfall tumbles over dark grey stones into a natural pool surrounded by grey willow, cypress, and weeping cherry trees.  Here rests a small shrine to the former masters of the Temple.  A little ways north of the shrine the land slopes gently upwards, becoming a low, round, wildflower carpeted hill. Along this hillside are the kanji carved grave markers of many monks and masters who once lived here.

Kneeling by the shrine is a woman of indeterminate age; her dark hair pulled up into a single short knot.  She wears a traditional Shenyi (a long, loose, dress like garment with wide sleeves and darker bordered collar and cuffs) of pure white, with black trim, all bound by a black silken sash.  Strapped to either side are the beautiful black lacquered scabbards of her húdié shuāngdāo.

Not fifty feet from her are the bodies of at least ten men, laid neatly as if sleeping in a freshly dug grave, their faces covered with yellow cloth.  All of them have their various weapons and personal items beside them.  All bear the bloody wounds that prove the manner of their death, swift and violently cut down.

At Motoko's approach the woman speaks, quietly, her back to the young Kensai woman.  She remains absolutely still as she recites:

"My name is Tenshi no Shi of the Sorrowing Blades, and if you are another hunter come to claim my head, I suggest you turn around and walk away.  I have no wish for further bloodshed, but if I must stand and face you it will end in death.  Please leave me to my own misery!"

"And so, my dear friend, you did not return to the Temple simply for Nang Xi's tea, exquisite though it is.  There is something on your mind, I believe. How may I help?" Brother Galen asks quietly.

Motoko wasn't sure what to expect when she stepped into the territory of the angel of death.  She could see the shrine, and the woman kneeling in front of it.  Her eyes glanced briefly toward the dead men, not sure how to react to the sight of them.  A cold shiver went up her spine as she thought about how each of them met their end.  She could smell the fresh blood from where she stood.  From the wounds alone, she could already imagine how each of them were killed.  A vertical slice.  A quick-draw maneuver.  A counter-attack.  Each one swift, deadly, and precise.  The result of perfected techniques.

She looked back up to Tenshi no Shi of the Sorrowing Blades.  She focused on the other woman's back.  For a brief moment, she flashed back to an image from her memory.  A memory of a sempai, kneeling before a shrine in a similar manner.  Clutching her chest, Motoko breathed deeply, getting a hold of herself before addressing the other kensai.

"I'm not here for your head," Motoko glanced off to the side, then approached, walking closer toward the other woman.  She reached into her cloak and pulled out a flask of rum.  She uncorked it, then took a sip.  She held it out to the other woman, offering it to her and said, "I'm just here to talk."

GrandMaster Galen listens attentively in that humble way he has that makes others feel like they are the only person in the world.  He eagerly drinks in every word Mariasha says, then weighs them carefully before he gives a well considered reply.

"Your heart tells you that these deaths betray the presence of your kind.  Whether this is true, I cannot say, for I have not heard these rumours, except for the Mage's death.  Remember, it is YOU who knows the ways of your kind; you who might see what others miss.  If you believe a changeling is involved, then I believe you.  The question is, what will you do?  Is it possible this changeling might know of your family?  It is possible, certainly, though it is also equally possible they do not.  If you choose to investigate then my advice to you is be cautious.  You have grown up among humans and have been long out of touch with your people.  Take someone with you, someone you trust."

Slowly, gracefully, the woman called Tenshi no Shi stood up and turned to face Motoko.  If she was at all surprised she gave no sign, her demeanor as calm as a star strewn sky on a windless night.  For several long moments, she watches the woman before her, dark eyes piercing as she studies her, her gaze lingering upon the young Kensai's daisho.  Finally, she shakes her head ever so slightly, silently declining the proffered flask.  Then she slowly places her fist into her palm and bows respectfully.

"You are not here for my head?" She smiled bitterly, her gaze never wavering, holding Motoko's own.  "Alright, let me imagine, for the moment, that you speak the truth.  You are either very brave or very foolish to come here, and unless my instincts fail me, you are no fool.  Why have you have interrupted my...rumination... to 'talk' with me?  What do you think we have to discuss?  My swords, Hajimari and Owari speak far more eloquently than I, and I am sure they are eager to converse with you.  You are not like the others,  there is no fear of death, no hesitation.  You have the heart of a warrior... Very well, you have thirty seconds; choose your words wisely!"

Motoko shrugged when the other swordswoman declined the flask of alcohol.  She took a quick swig of it before tucking it away.  She placed her fist in her palm and returned Tenshi no Shi's greeting.  The aura surrounding this woman... this other warrior who followed the path of the sword.  It was suffocating.  The smell of death lingered the air.  It took a good chunk of her willpower to keep herself from drawing her sword in response to the immense atmosphere.

Thirty seconds before to talk... that was more than she expected to get, honestly.

"There's a fine line between bravery and foolishness.  The only difference is one gets results, the other doesn't," Motoko couldn't help but remark.  Her gaze went toward the bodies lying on the ground.  "If I'm not mistaken, you have been... ruminating here for quite some time now.  I thought perhaps I could lend an ear and listen to whatever may trouble you.  In exchange, I may benefit from your experiences as a fellow warrior of the sword."

Motoko thought about it some more, wondering how many more seconds she had left, if she had any.  If there was... she would quickly add, "My name is Motoko Kurenai, by the way.  My swords are named Shohenji and Tadashi.  The Shinken Katana is unnamed.  I'm sure our swords have much to say, but right now, I'm more interested in your story."

Re: Brother Galen and Crow

Mariasha:
In reply to Brother Galen (msg # 83):

Mariasha took a deep, calming breath and then gave her dear friend a grateful smile." My thanks, I have worried over this rumors for awhile. I will give it some time and thought before actively pursuing them. I do want to find them truth and I believe that there could be some answers for me here. However, you are right I need. To be cautious and plan this out. Again, I thank you, dear friend for your sound advice."  She smiled again and then picked up her tea and drank, savorying the taste.

Brother Galen finished his second cup as he listened to Mariasha's decision.  He nodded quietly in reply, then took a deep breath as well and exhaled softly.  He looked down at his lap, his lips tightening for the briefest of moments, almost imperceptible, but Mariasha knew the man better than almost anyone in Arn.  Carefully he placed his tea cup down and folded his hands together in his lap.  When he again lifts his face to meet Mariasha's eyes, there is a sadness in his own, as if old tears still dwelt there, waiting to be shed.

"Good, that is the right decision as I see it.  You have grown in wisdom, since last we met, Mariasha.  Once something has been done, it is written upon the tapestry of your heart and cannot be undone.  That is why I have found it is best to consider ones actions before their execution.  Then the mind, the heart, and the body may act as one; with strength, focus, determination.  Free from the distractions of doubt, you will then achieve success.  When the time comes, and you must make a decisive action, with no opportunity for thought, then you must trust in yourself, and let your spirit, your training, guide you to the correct path.  However, if you do have time, and in most circumstances you will, you should properly assess your situation.  There will always be consequences to all that you do.  It is best to be sure of what those will be, so that you know you can live with your choices."

Motoko:

Tenshi no Shi listened in silence to Motoko's cautious reply, her expression inscrutable, her stance graceful, confident, motionless.  And yet Motoko, her warrior's instincts honed by years of training, could see she was razor focused, ready at any moment, for a fight to the death.  She was resolutely waiting for it like a familiar dance she'd long since tired of, but was unable to escape.

"You are not what I expected,"
she admitted quietly, her voice measured and calm, yet profoundly sad.  There was also genuine surprise: "Harmony surrounds you, and flows out of you into the world.  You are a warrior, that much is true, but in your face I see compassion;  in your stance there is peace; in your eyes there is hope, not the blood-lust of these hunters at my feet.  Their arrogance was their undoing, their battle lost before it had begun, but you are not like them.  You do not speak boastfully of your deeds, as these men did.  No, your honour is a part of who you are, it is the path that you tread...I envy that more than you could possibly know."

She laughed rancorously as Motoko talked of learning from her. "My mistakes are the only lessons I have left to teach, how not to succumb to your own folly, why you should not follow in my blood stained footsteps.  My story is unfinished, though I mean to write an ending very soon."

Tenshi no Shi considered.  She had a tale to tell, but until this moment she had seen no reason to tell it to anyone else.  And yet this Kensai before her seemed truly honourable; was such a thing even possible?  It seemed too much to hope for, and certainly far more than she deserved.  She decided to test Motoko...

"I have a story I would share with you, if you would hear it.  First, tell me, what do you know of me?  What have you heard of the terror that is Tenshi no Shi of the Sorrowing Blades?"

Re: Brother Galen and Crow

"Heh... not much, I'm afraid," Motoko visibly relaxed when she realized that the woman warrior before her had chosen not to draw her blade.  She scratched the back of her head as she tried to remember what she could about Tenshi no Shi of the Sorrowing Blades.  She only knew what Galen told her.  "All I really know is that a woman who answered to the name 'Tenshi no Shi' suddenly showed up here one day three weeks ago.  A bunch of bounty hunters came after her and she... took them all down.  I take it your story is about what happened before then?"

Re: Brother Galen and Crow

Tenshi no Shi gives Motoko a wondering look and, for a brief moment, Motoko can see how beautiful she could be, but her smile dies as quickly as it was born, almost as if it knew it could never belong on her face.  She locks eyes with the young Kensai before her and then carefully begins to recite:

"I believe you, and so you pass my test, Motoko Kurenai.  To answer your question, my story begins long ago, in a village far from here.  In my years in the Ikoshan Empire I have been a wanted criminal, a bandit leader, a murderer and worse.  I have burned entire towns to the ground to avenge some petty dispute between lords, and led men to slaughter peasants by the score for their meager possessions.  It is all too easy to lose your conscience, once you have denied it.  I was not always like this, but I remember all too clearly when my decent began.

My father died when I was still a girl, and with him gone I felt no sense of direction.  I had no other family to turn to, and so I was alone.  I met a boy, he was a natural leader, he had drive and direction.  I was in love.  He used to enjoy tormenting the children of our village and I thought it was all fun.  Then one day..."

She pauses a moment, a profoundly sad expression on her face.  She seems lost in her memories, as if she could see the events she peaks of, as painful as if they were yesterday.

"He... he pushed a young boy into the river, outside of town.  It was fast moving, and would have swept the child away, but the boy managed to cling to a rock.  Why, you might ask, would my love do such a thing?  Why indeed.  In the intervening years I have come to believe it was more than simple horseplay.  There was a gleam in my young man's eye that I cannot forget.  The child screamed for help; his cries shrill with terror, for he could not swim.  I moved to help him, but then I felt a hand on my arm.

"The boy I loved, turned to me and said: "If we help him, he'll only tell others what we've done.  We have to let him go."  Something in his voice...I believed him.  That poor child was swept away in the current and was found dead, down river, two days later.  We never told anyone what we had done, but I could not forget.

"Those simple words still echo in my mind even now, If we help him, he'll only tell others what we've done.  We have to let him go.  Nights are worse, I cannot sleep for the screams of that boy as he was washed away; I hear them to this day.  I have known no happiness since and I do not ask for forgiveness that I do not deserve.  Whether I was to blame for that moment or not no longer matters, for I have done far worse since, always hoping to forget what happened.  As if the screams of others could drown out that poor child's.

"That is why I have come here now.  I am tired of my life, but at least I have lived it.  He deserved to live as I did, but has never felt a moment's remorse for his deeds that day.  If you have heard of the rich bounty placed on my head, you may even know him.  Ambassador Sen of Iko is my quarry.  I will make him pay for that boy's life!"

She exhaled softly, and lifted her face, her piercing gaze holding Motoko's own.  Her look is at once both pleading, and challenging.  "And now you know my intentions, you must choose, Motoko Kurenai... will you hinder me or help me?"

Re: Brother Galen and Crow

Motoko was struck practically speechless by the story she just heard.  She wasn't sure how to respond at first.  She had figured that Tenshi no Shi had a dark history, but burning entire towns to the ground?  She wondered for a moment if she was biting off more than she could chew by accepting Galen's request.

She took a deep breath and tried to come up with the best answer she could.  She thought about what her Shisho would say... what her Sempai would say if they were in her place right now.

"Tenshi no Shi... I agree that the Ambassador Sen of Iko must face justice for what he has done, but his death would only keep him from his due punishment.  If you rush in and kill him... or he kills you, then the truth of his crimes would be lost forever.  That boy you told me about.  He deserves better than that."

"The moment you lose your life is the moment you can no longer do anything, including making up for your own sins.  If you truly feel remorse for the end of that boy's life, perhaps you should think about what you can still do with the rest of your life.  You told me that you have known no happiness since that day.  From the sounds of it, you've spent a long time since then doing what's essentially the same thing.  Perhaps the answers you seek lie somewhere other than death."

Re: Brother Galen and Crow

Tenshi no Shi shakes her head sadly, her features hardening.  "For a moment I dared hope you could understand, that somehow you might grasp the depths of my anger, my shame!  The cold hunger for vengeance is all that remains of me.  No Motoko, death is the ONLY answer with any meaning now; for me and for Sen.  Death is his due, as it is mine.  Before this is through we must both pay for our crimes!"

She bit her lip, the fury in her dark eyes ebbing slightly as she considered the Kensai's words.

"And yet, on one matter at least we seem to agree.  Sen has surrounded himself with guards, and while it is unlikely they have skill enough to hinder me, I cannot take the chance that one might land a lucky blow.  Motoko, you could bring me to Sen.  Tell his aides you have captured me, and are claiming the undoubtedly generous bounty on my head.  He is arrogant enough to permit you an audience, he'll want to see me humbled and defeated.  Get me to him and I will end his life, I need only one chance.  I've waited so long for just one chance... As one warrior to another I implore you, help me end Ambassador Sen's life.  After that I care not for my own fate!"

"Even if you manage to succeed in ending Sen's life, there's no guarantee that you'll be able to escape," Motoko replied, her eyes narrowed as she met the fury ebbing in the Tenshi's dark eyes.  "Even if you don't care for your own life, I do!  I won't allow you to throw it away."

The Kensai considered her options.  A plan was formulating in her head.  There were certainly ways to bring the Ambassador to justice.  She was going to need some help, but it was possible.

"Give me two days.  In two days, I will have the Ambassador himself confess his crimes to the public.  If my plan does not work, then... I'll do as you say.  I'll bring you to him under the guise of a bounty hunter."

"I have already thrown my life away Motoko; it was forfeit long ago.  This can only end in death, my sister in the sword...there is a kind of peace in knowing that it will finally be over."

Tenshi no Shi turned her face from Motoko, her hands clenching into fists, then slowly opening once more.  She nodded quietly, still not looking at the Kensai.

"Motoko.  If you lived as I have...perhaps you'd understand.  Sen will never confess, he'd rather die first, but you will learn that for yourself.  I will wait for two more days, Motoko Kurenai.  After that, if Sen is not in irons I will kill him, and ANYONE who stands in my way!"

She turned away from Motoko and knelt down as she had before and said nothing more.

Re: Brother Galen and Crow

"Thank you, I will not let you down," Motoko placed her fist into her palm and bowed at the waist respectfully.  She turned away from the other woman and started making her way back to the others.

She had made her promise and she was confident that the plan she had in mind would work.  Still... she did not know Sen personally, so she could not be entirely sure.  First... she needed more information and she knew exactly who she could count on to get exactly that.
