Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

The Suburban with the 4 militia inside returned, escorting the news van. Other personnel busied themselves with securing the position. Reinforcements were on the way, but it could be as long as a half-hour for them to travel the 5-10km or so, even if the route (MSR Mike) was secure.

Meanwhile, all the other personnel who were assigned to the LAV saddled up.

In reply to Robert Duncan Fox (msg #110):

"Sounds good to me! Take care, Rachel, see you in about a half-hour or forty-five minutes!"

She got behind the steering wheel of the Jeep, started it up.

"All aboard!"

Robert Duncan Fox:
In reply to Taras Vladimirovich Shevchenko (msg #109):

"Good idea. Okay, slight change of plans."

"Rachel, you stay with a couple of the militia, the Suburban, the BTR and the news crew. Anything less is risking your safety. You should be safe until then."

"Taras, you Gunny and Sergeant Tremblay take your UAZ and fall in with the Jeep and Kodiak. Kelsey, Rachel is staying, so you drive. We're going up north on ASR Bravo, then turning east on ASR India, then north, then west to come at the potential roadblock location from the east. Unless people thinks that's too obvious? Alterate routes?"

He looked at the map, tracing the general route with his finger.

"Let's mount up, then! Remember Keith, you're with Taras and Rob."

http://zwibbler.com/shared/610.pdf

(Map Notes: Routes have been changed to military phonetics, they should be self-explanatory. This is Fox's proposed route, there are obviously others!)
Tremblay nods and let's his FN rifle hang on it's sling while he's issued a new vehicle assignment.  "Roger that Fox.  I got my ruck on the other vehicle, I;m sure someone will look after it for me?"  Keith makes his way over to the UAZ and tries to figure out where he's sitting.  He looks over to Taras, "First come first serve on the seats Taras or how are we doing this?"

Rob nods his agreement and heads to the UAZ with his gear. He hopped in the back and acts as tail end charlie for the vehicle figuring there were others better equipped to cover the other sectors.

"Taras if you see a good spot for me to drop out and provide cover once we are near the objective just say the word. I'm not much use in this vehicle. If we hit the shit en-route I will probably be firing from under the vehicle so don't run my ass over." Rob said with a chuckle then digs out his map to look over the objective area while they get mounted and moving.

Taras jumped on the wheel and motioned everybody to come aboard. He was familiar with the driving of the machine that brought him from the North of the province to Vancouver.

It doesn't matter! Just check your sectors and hold on. This piece of soviet junk doesn't speed a shit so if we get shot at I will ditch by the road and we'll use the revolutionary steel as barricade!

The AKSU was resting faithful on his lap. With a dark blue belch of fumes the UAZ jumped forward swerving a little before hitting the straight line.

So, where are we going?

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

The group started moving out, with the Jeep (Seth, Andy and Kelsey) in the lead, the Kodiak in the middle and the UAZ (Taras, Rob and Keith) in the rear. The news van was parked next to the BTR for protection. Rachel questioned the unwounded bandits inside the APC one at a time, while the other wounded ones were treated.

No sooner had they started to pull out did they hear the sounds of an un-muffled motorcycle start up somewhere to the NE, then speed off north. Obviously, someone was taking the opportunity to go warn their confederates somewhere north that something had happened, and gave up trying to use the radio (which was jammed)

"Ah shit," muttered Fox up in the LAV's TC position. This wasn't good, it meant that someone would soon be aware of their arrival. He got on the radio over the secure team channel.

"This is Hotel Actual to all units. Be advised our presence is compromised. Break. New route as follows: turn East at ASR Romeo (Rumble St.), then north on ASR Papa (Pattison). About a block from ASR India dismount and proceed with caution. I'd rather we arrive late than roll into an ambush! Break. Will advise Charlie One (UBC Ops). Over."

Taras was in quick staccato shifting gears, answering on the radio and trying to keep to the road while looking for signs of activity in the surroundings. The BTR was left behind. Not a pretty picture for an enemy too well equipped to deal with soft skinned vehicles.

I hope that damned Fox knows what he's doing! He said looking to no one in particular while making sure that the AKSU stood on his lap at easy grasp.

"Great," muttered Seth to Andy and Kelsey.  "They've been warned we're on our way!"

He was still hyped up from the previous skirmish however and hadn't yet fired his RPK so a part of him, he had to admit to himself, hoped that the enemy would decide to make a stand rather than simply run away.  He felt the need to prove himself to his new colleagues, both those he'd fought with before and those he'd only just met.

He kept a watch out as Kelsey drove, trusting that she knew the new route Fox had advised.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

The column made it to Rumble without eating any RPGs. They turned right, rolled down to Patterson. About halfway down, the radio crackled again on the secure channel. It was Rachel.

"Hotel Six from Lima Eleven, over."

Fox replied, "Lima Eleven this is Hotel Six, go ahead. Over."

"Ahhh... I got some worthwhile intel from those bozos that surrendered. They are part of a loose gang of mercenaries made up of deserters. They get guns, heavy weapons, bikes, gold and drugs from someone he won't say, but I'll bet are the Hotel Alphas. He doesn't say why. If I had to say, part is that this is the farm team, if you know what I mean.

"He also says there's a second group camped out at Metrotown, in the Holiday Inn Express by the Skytrain tracks.

"There's about thirty in number, various small arms, a couple MGs and RPGs. Also, they got a twin cannon of some kind mounted on a flatbed truck. They have lookouts on the BC Tel building at Boundary and Kingsway and others down the other way on Kingsway keeping watch. They hit people as they pass the mall. He doesn't know what they'll do if they get warned, but he thinks they'll run. Did you copy all that? Also, our relief should be here within ten mikes. Over."

There was a pause before Fox replied. "Uh, yeah, I got solid copy on that intel and your relief. Keep me updated. Out."

Fox called an immediate halt and climbed down from the Kodiak to talk to Andy, Taras and the others. "So what do you guys think? We're a little ways from Metrotown. Do we want to dismount here and proceed on foot or with the vehicles? Check out their HQ or their observation posts?"

I say call it a day. Remove the bodies, get the media to film the entire scene with all the weapons and score some propaganda. We have a good starting point to move against those punks. Still, we have the problem with the airport. We don't have the ability to run two battles at the same time.

Conklin mulled over the information before speaking.

"Well they only have 2 choices and that's to lay a hasty ambush and stand their ground or scatter. I'm  guess they'll scatter if given half a chance. Problem is, they now have reinforcements at our rear and we no longer have the element of surprise. I'd have to agree with Taras here. We no longer have the upper-hand and if they can rally those reinforcements we scared off earlier then we're in for a world of shit. But it's not our show to run."

Rob continued watching the road behind them awaiting whatever came.

Smiling, Fox agreed.

"Yeah, we can either chase them down, or hope we don't run into an ambush. All the while, we hope those stragglers aren't coming up on our rear. Sure, let's call this in and call it a day. Maybe we can conduct some kind of covert surveillance of the area after we deal with the Airport. Let's head home. Back the way we came down Boundary, maybe we can run into some of those peckerwoods if they're following us."

He hefted his rifle, preparing to re-mount and roll out.

I smell Hell's Angels business. Eventually we are going to face them as we get rid of their friends. We have a priority over the airport but I wouldn't discount a covert surveillance with the intel we got from the prisoners. I suggest to go back to University grounds and report to the civilian authority. I hope Trish will make a nice TV report on today's catch.

Taras turned around the jeep and headed for home.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

Seth felt a mix of emotions at the decision to head back to base.  Part of him was frustrated that he hadn't had the opportunity to prove himself, he hadn't even fired a shot in anger during the recent skirmish, but another part of him was conscious that the patrol had succeeded in several objectives without taking any casualties in return and that pushing on further made no sense.

It was the right decision to return to base and Seth knew it but that didn't stop him being grumpy about it!

He kept a watch out on the return, conscious that now was not the time to drop their vigilance.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

With apparently not much to be gained and a considerable amount to be lost, the unit got turned around on Imperial (ASR India) and headed home, going west on eventually what would become West 49th. In the mean time, relief arrived to take the prisoners and technical off Rachel's hands.

Arriving safely at UBC, the team met up for a quick debrief. The Faculty's leadership (Kwan, Khandola and Belanger) as well as Lt. Cdr. Clarke-Sullivan were pleased at how well things went, overall. The last unfinished task (clearing MSR Kilo) was minor in that one significant force had been overcome and at least one MSR (Mike) had been cleared.

It was early afternoon when the briefing was finished, unless anyone had anything to add.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

During the afternoon, the prisoners and captured material came in for processing. While their victory was real and apparent, there was still some apparent unfinished business that needed taking care of. Not just the possibility of another roadblock, but the airport.

Some lunch was rustled up to keep people fed. There wasn't much, just some sandwiches and cold milk, but welcome enough for people who'd been on the road since 0700 or so.

Belanger suggested to Andy and Rob that it might be a good idea to re-unite with the scout/sniper unit that had the northern bridge and Bridge Troll positions under surveillance. They were under the command of an RCMP marksman for the mean time but they had started the day under Rob's guidance.

After the overall review of the days mission, Sgt. Shevchenko addressed the raising concerns regarding the future operations:

Metropolis seems to be self contained now. Is obviously a "no-go" area but they got a bloody nose and I don't think they'll be happy to venture too far. They must be on "damage control" mode.

Now, the Airport is a more serious concern. It seems that city of New Westminster will not be too helpful and we have a time sensitive strategic location that needs to be occupied as soon as possible. I do have a contingency plan based on a full scale military operation. A decision needs to be made in order to prepare training and equipment.
