Bezhev climbed over and through the liquid-delivery pipes, then staggered up the ramp into the back of the LAV.

"I am aboard! Thank you for waiting!"

He collapsed into one of the seats, looked down at von Stahl on the floor and shook his head.

Thankfully, McRae and Fox moved out of his line of fire. He couldn't really see Jagelis too well or identify him through the weapons sights because of the terrain but Kelsey's warning came through loud and clear!

"ON THE WAY!" he yelled, warning everyone that he was opening up.

Aiming at the man he fired a burst from the coaxial machinegun, so as to not damage the BTR with any misses or hit Kelsey with an overpenetration.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Above the rail yard, the SAW gunner was now completely obscured and so he held his fire. However, the tree he was presumably sheltering under stuck up from the cloud. Taras could hear some yelling back and forth up there as the enemy tried to figure out what to do.

Down below them, Sheeler replied to Taras, "you got it, let's go!". He and his partner, Chaul, set up near Taras at the western end of the rail car. If they tried to fire from underneath there could be problems with the rocket exhaust. They quickly moved into position to fire, a HEAT round already loaded into the Carl Gustav. Sheeler intended to take some time lining up his aim point, the large tree that loomed out of the cloud.

In the LAV, Delaney and Mac worked on the Major, becoming increasingly more frustrated at their lack of progress. Bezhov mounted up and Rachel raised the ramp. After helping Bezhov, Fox and McRae crossed to the far side of the pipeline, waiting for the LAV to move out.

Jagelis tossed the demo charge onto the rear deck of the BTR, then lay down to get some cover and plugged his ears. This was going to be loud!

Meanwhile, Kelsey warned everyone that someone was using a demo charge. Tremblay heard this and realised the man he was tracking in the Kodiak's turret optics wasn't a friendly! He managed to loose a burst of MG fire at Jagelis as he threw the charge, but was unable to tell if he hit and now the target was out of sight. Unable to do anything else, Tremblay waited for the explosion that would tear the BTR apart.

Pütsep spotted the explosive charge as it landed on the rear deck of the BTR, not too far from him. In a burst of suicidal heroism, Pütsep leaped up onto one of the BTR's immense tires and, reaching up onto the deck, grabbed and threw the demo charge back in Jagelis' direction! He then dove off the wheel and tackled Kelsey, bringing her down and protecting her with his own body.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

The Carl Gustav fireteam was already deployed and Private Droz took good aim at the tree while under cover of the smoke blanket. The large target was clearly visible through the 3x optical sight with a 17 degree (300 mrad) field of view. The rocket propelled FFV-551 round provided with a rather flat trajectory would be soon on its way. Meanwhile Constable Chau prepared a second HEAT round discarding the waterproof container while checking the status of the munition. It seemed to be OK.

FIRE WHEN READY! Ordered Taras then he let loose a short PKM burst in the general area around the tree in order to keep the SAW gunner down in a prone position and offering a more lucrative target for the incoming airburst.

The rest of the team at this point were under cover but anxious to observe the results of the Carl Gustav shooting.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

The sun broke through the clouds again, and the wind continued to blow in fitful gusts.

Inside the Lavin' Spoonful's rear compartment, Delaney and Mac worked on the Major, while Bezhov looked on. It wasn't going well. Mac tried everything he could think of. "Check him again," he said, "there's something we're missing."

McRae and Fox started down the hill, trailing the LAV on the other side of the pipes. The footing was a little unsure. They were on a road but it wasn't paved and ran with water, slippery with mud.

By the BTR, Pütsep smiled in apology. He got up and looked around, puzzled. "Where is kaboom? There should be Earth-shattering kaboom, yes?" He offered Kel a hand up.

The BTR drove forward with a bellow of diesel smoke. The smoke grenade, still spewing a red cloud, rolled off the back and fell to the mud. It drove under the pipes, then turned right and began climbing the hill up towards the LAV. Actually, it was on the road on the same side of the pipes as McRae and Fox so it was driving towards them.

Taras fired a burst up at the unseen SAW gunner, to unknown effect. Droz aimed the Carl Gustav as Chau made sure it was properly loaded. Another few seconds would do it and he would pull the trigger. "HEAT round up!" said Chau, indicating the weapon was ready to fire.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Team Bravo was expecting the incoming blast from the Carl Gustav any time now. Taras let loose a second burst of machine gun fire to keep the enemy down. Private Sheeler, itching for a fight after being unable to pinpoint the SAW gunner with accuracy, tried a double tap with the C1A1 rifle in the general direction of the covering fire. He was proud to put his weapon to work. Actually, Canada was the first country to field the FAL. It served as the country standard battle rifle from the early 1954 to 1984, when it began to be replaced by the lighter Diemaco C7, a licenced version of the AR-15.

Troy and Bajorek remained well under the protection of the railcars waiting for further instructions, any activity on the radio or shoulder checking the surroundings. They heard a big engine roaring up in the hill, the sound was unmistakable in between the concerto of different calibers zooming around. Then it happened:

BOOOOOM!

The backblast kicked a good deal of rocks and sand but the heavy rain from last night prevented the creation of a cloud of dust right behind the fireteam. The sonic boom could be heard echoing in the surrounding mountains.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

The Carl Gustav roared, backblast kicking up gravel and grit from the train yard. The target was the tree protruding from the dense cloud of white smoke 140m away. There was another loud BANG! as the round impacted, also echoing off the hills like ripples in a pond. Debris was scattered all around: bits of bark, splinters of wood, shards of branches and shredded leaves. If the SAW gunner wasn't dead due to some vital organ being punctured, he was likely stunned by the blast.

Smoke wisped from the launcher's venturi nozzle as the last 2 members of the team moved up, ready to make the next bound.

Kelsey and Pütsep waited for the demo charge to go off, but were disappointed. Maybe Jagelis hadn't set the detonator or fuse correctly? Either way, both were startled when the 84mm HEAT round slammed into the tree above where the SAW gunner was located. They were fortunately far enough away (over 100m) to be fairly safe but it was unexpected, to say the least!

They were gratified to see the BTR pulling away to what was presumed to be a safer location, although that left them a lot more vulnerable.

Lee kept the Kodiak rolling downhill at a walking pace to allow the dismounts, McRae and Fox, to keep up. As it traveled, the LAV's turret traversed left, then fired 3 rounds. The empty shells were ejected out the front of the turret, clanged off the hull to the ground. There was a trio of explosions from within the woods but it was difficult to tell what effect they had.

Down the hill from Fox and Andy, the BTR's engine roared as it laboured up the hill towards them. It was unclear if they had heard the transmission. The commander's hatch was open but no one was directing the APC from there; Pütsep was not visible.

The sound of the various weapons fire and explosions echoed back and forth from the wooded hillsides around them.

Andy kept his eyes on the BTR and made sure that he kept moving forward as close to the pipes as possible, if there was a Blue on Blue incident he hoped that he could find some cover there. They hadn't had enough time for all the dispirit units of the alliance to train together and get to know each other and confusion was always possible.

As he moved he kept alert for any dangers to the LAV, that, after all was the whole point of him being out here with his ass in the wind.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Well...that was our best chance... The thought lingered about for a second right after the explosion rocked the tree turning it into a gigantic piñata. If the personalized business card of the ukrainian was not deadly enough he hoped, at least, that it would cause enough physical and psychological damage to reduce the level of threat from the SAW gunner. Taras understood that he was commanding a fire support team and he couldn't afford to be pinned down by a lonely trooper. It was time to move.

Soviet book on tactics was written on different characters than those of the rest of the Bravo Element but stressing nonetheless the need for violent action through a steady "fix & flank" diet. And this is what Taras was having in mind for the next step:

Come back here! We are moving East!

After recalling the Carl Gustav fireteam the entire element would move East along the railway tracks under the protection offered by the bulky boxcars. Shevchenko wanted to close-in and go for the kill hitting the enemy in their left side or rear while they were busy engaging the Alpha ground element. The envelopment would prevent the escape of the rogue troops.

Private Sheeler, the most enthusiastic member of the crew punctuated the HEAT round effect with another 7,62 mm. double tap. Get some!
