Kelsey takes the time to rig it right, and checks it with her scanning radio before radioing Taras back.

Re: Safari II

"Alright gang, let's get ready to bound."

Once the radios were set up she exits the vehicle and takes up a position, just like the other two "Passengers".  She'd have the man sitting behind her fan right and rear, she fans right and forwardish, and the one sitting behind Hawke going leftish.  As usual, they picked their own position based on their own experience.  She expected it to go like this every time they stopped.  They would not remount until the sniper team deployed and was ready.  She settled into her own position and started scanning her zone.

Thomas was getting use to this easy ride, no walking and springs in the seat. He had taken the seat behind the driver and had the launcher between himself and Tremblay.

When the deployed out of the vehicle he did his usual hustle to a suitable position where he would not fry his team mates if he had to launch.

As Andy's team moved forward he said, "Find a good place for us to end our bound. Once we reach there we'll deploy and call the others forward."

He kept his rifle ready and waited to take his turn in the bounds.

Re: Safari II

In reply to Andrew Montgomery McRae (msg # 24):

While the Trans-Canada wasn't an Interstate, it was still problematical to find cover in what was essentially a ruler-straight 4-lane divided freeway through fairly flat country. Thankfully, most of the way was tree-lined (including much of the divider strip) and much of the wide paved shoulder was shaded by branches that would otherwise be pruned back. There were also rises and dips, and a few abandoned vehicles. By moving cautiously up the shoulder the tiny Iltis was fairly well-concealed, especially as the larger Humvee was keeping in front. Often, there were communities or buildings (farm or light industrial) on either side of the freeway but typically it was screened by a fringe of now-overgrown vegetation and so was not good sites for OPs. Still, they could only do so much and they knew that every once in a while they had little or no cover from observation.

Re: Safari II

They steadily made their way towards "March", the mid point to "April", their turn-off to Highway 13 and RV with Knight. Beside them grew thick woods, untrimmed in years. Tires crunched over fallen branches and leaves littering the once-bare wide shoulder.

Once past March, they were drawing close to April when they spotted something unusual. It looked like a helo parked or landed on the eastbound lanes (the ones they were on), about 2km ahead.

The helo was spotted by Bishop as it moved up in its bound, getting in position just overtopping a small rise. Rook was covering but from behind the rise, so they couldn't see the grounded helo until they made their own bound.

There were no overt warning signs, insects still buzzed in the afternoon and birds still flew and sang from the trees. The sun was starting to sink towards the western horizon, although sunset was several hours away. At the very least, anyone in front of them would have the sun in their eyes.

The highway was otherwise deserted, not even any wrecks littered the shoulder on this stretch. Knight radioed that they were going to have to change their course and try an alternate route, the river road was impassible. Being inland of the riverside rail lines and somewhat elevated, it hadn't been flooded but it travelled along a hillside which had seen too many washouts and debris slides.

Re: Safari II

Kelsey has them wait until Knight has a path before they continue, trying to get her timing right for support, meanwhile optics are turned upon the helo and it's surroundings.  This did not necessarily mean bad things!

Reaching over, Keith took the handset and updated Andy and Mac.

"Rook from Bishop.

"SITREP as follows. We're going to hold our position at this bound with Knight re-routes.

"Also be advised, we see what looks like a helo on the MSR. Range approximatetly 1500 metres. No activity. Will advise, but may as well make your bound to our position."

Re: Safari II

Where Bishop was currently sitting, the freeway had been cut through some low hills. So there were overgrown embankments on both sides. Trees overhung the shoulder, bushes came right down. Weeds were growing through the cracks in the pavement.

Kelsey looks around, then adds on the transmission.  "This is Bishop one, we wait until Knight has re-routed, then we move forward on this helicopter.  Three by foot and two by vehicle.  Rook, before we move I want you to catch up leap and set up for support, maybe on this low hill.  Foot will screen a position for you now."

She steps out of the vehicle and checks the terrain, the hill cutting through.. looking for a likely path to where she could place a sniping team.  She also grabs the field glasses and drops them in a pocket, and spotting an animal trail she moves out, staying crouched and aware, rifle slung at ready.

"Ok recce, drop your cocks and grab your socks, it's gong show time.  I've got point, you two fan on my nine.

Re: Safari II

As they were in a cut, getting to higher ground meant climbing up the embankment off to their right. After doing so, Mac and Andy were in a good position to observe down the highway the 1000m or so to the landed helo.

Looking through the spotting telescope and binoculars, it was obvious the craft had been there a long time. It seemed abandoned, and indeed, looked like it was covered in graffiti. It looked like a Russian Mil Mi-8 transport, just sitting off to the side of the highway on the eastbound lanes.

Cover like wrecks seemed to be thin on the ground in this part of the valley. There was an abandoned compact car, stripped down to the frame. It was about 500m away on the left shoulder. Very small, it would provide minimal cover for the Humvee. Better than nothing!

There's one small wreck at about 500m, plus the helo at about a klick plus. Someone obviously went through and towed off any vehicles at some point. If you leave the highway you can pull into the centre dividing strip behind clumps of trees.
