Re: Undercover Operations

They were booting it, going eastwards on Fraser highway at close to 100 km/ph. The wide road was bordered at times with strip malls and car dealerships, then schools and town homes, farmlands, then run-down strip malls again. A few vehicles lay abandoned on the side of the road, but the black-top was practically empty.

Up ahead, they were coming to 248 st. From there, it looked like they were turning north from the way the lead vehicles slowed to make the turn.

Re: Undercover Operations

In reply to Tyler Gabriel Hope (msg # 10):

The little convoy turned left from Fraser Highway onto 248 St. It was largely farm country, with fairly good 2-lane blacktop roads. Plenty of trees interspersed with open fields, farm houses (ranch style, 2 story suburban style and some really huge luxury homes) and stretches of forest. The road was often lined by trees, fences and overgrown hedges, as well as deep ditches common to agricultural areas.

Houses were becoming more common, and the farms seemed to have once been more vegetable and fruit farms separated by belts of trees and hedges. They travelled north for a couple klicks. When they passed the intersection with 54 Ave, the V-100's turret commander turned around and signalled for them to slow down. Outside, they could hear gunfire up ahead. A merc technical was stopped in the middle of the road, trees on either side. It mounted a .50 MG but the crew seemed dead and the vehicle abandoned. A rusty car was parked on the right shoulder, also abandoned-looking, doors open, engine left running.

Up ahead (north), 248 ran through a belt of forest, there were shallow weed-choked drainage ditches on either side. To the right were several houses and neglected greenhouses behind tall unkempt hedges. To the left were the remains of rows of tattered clear plastic-covered berry fields.

GM Note: Your position is just north of 54 Ave and 248 St:

Re: Undercover Operations

The car was coming up from the south. At the intersection of 56 Ave and 248 St to the north is where the "enemy" (Belanger, your control) is located. To the east is where the friendlies are coming. To the west is in the general direction of the HA club house.

Up ahead, in the intersection, a WP grenade went off, shrouding the area in a blossom of white smoke and sparks.

Re: Undercover Operations

In reply to Howard Hawks (msg # 15):

They moved past the V-100 and MG-armed pickup that was parked in front of the Charger. The bikers and mercenaries didn't seem very interested in moving up, and they seemed to be talking on the radio and among themselves. There were trees and bushes on either side, as this seemed to be a bit of a green belt.

The intersection was still shrouded in white smoke from the WP grenade.

When they moved up to the stopped vehicles (a car and another MG-armed technical), they saw some bikes that had been dumped. Dead men manned the .50 in the back of the pickup, bullet holes starred the windows of the truck and car. A body lay on the pavement beside the passenger door of the car, the driver lay slumped against the wheel.

From the overgrown ditch to the right, a bearded merc (BDUs, PASGT vest and helmet, M16A2) yelled, "don't go any further forward! We got 'em pinned down, but there's a sniper! We called the tank to flush 'em out, should be here any minute."

Tyler could hear the roar of a diesel engine approaching from the NW, plus the screech and squeal of tank tracks and inadequately lubricated rollers. He could see, above the trees, a plume of dark diesel smoke approached, coming from left to right.

His radio, set to Belanger's channel, crackled. "Hotel...Hotel...This is Knight. We have visual on a tank. What's your status?"

OOC: To clarify, you moved past the forward vehicles of your element, and by moving up are now arriving at an earlier 2-vehicle element that was ambushed. There is a ditch on either side, then trees.

Re: Undercover Operations

Tyler motions Koldan to go into the ditch on the left side of the street, looking to see if anybody else is there.  If so, he continues past the ditch into the trees, with Howard at his heels.  If not, he slides into the ditch himself.  In either case, when he comes to a stop under cover, he unlimbered his AN/PRC-137 and, keeping the radio as concealed as possible, spoke into it.  "Hotel, Knight, this is Castle.  Be advised approximately one-five reinforcements have arrived from south on two-four-eight with two more technicals and a Victor-one-zero-zero.  Hotel, orders?  Over."

Bailing out of the Charger, Koldan followed Tyler and the dog.

Once in the left hand ditch, Koldan looked over to the men in the right hand ditch and the vehicles idling in the road.

"The sniper they're talking about is probably Conklin, the Marine sniper that works with Belanger? I hope he doesn't shoot us."

"That sure sounds like a tank! And looks like there's an RPG in the car."

Re: Undercover Operations

There was no response on the radio.

The sounds of the tank approaching the intersection ahead got louder and louder. But they still couldn't see the intersection for the thick cloud of white smoke from the Willie Pete.

Indeed, looking over at the car (a banged-up late-model Subaru Legacy), they could see there was a loaded RPG-7, plus backpack with rounds, sitting in the backseat of the car nearest them.

Re: Undercover Operations

Hoping Conklin (or whoever it is) recognizes him (or perhaps Howard), Tyler crawls the few meters to the Subaru with Howard at his side.  He grabs the RPG-7 and the backpack and crawls back to the ditch.  "I don't know if we're gonna be able to use this," he mutters to Koldan, "but now we have it."  Looking at the launcher, he can probably tell it is one of those he and the Russian had supplied to the HAs and/or mercs.

Have lost contact with Hotel but they're still firing, assume comms failure. Ah, there's a Hotel Alpha element with one Tango Five Fower. Popped a Willie Pete and am keeping the Fife Fower buttoned up, am displace..."

The transmission ended abruptly in a crescendo of MG fire, punctuated by a massive explosion as the tank fired a 100mm HE shell at something located at point blank range. Due to the smoke, what or where was obscured.

Koldan looked the RPG and backpack over, nodded that it seemed in good condition.

"Better we have it than those fuckers do, yes? OK, what is the plan? Go forward and try to take pressure off friend Belanger, or maybe do some damage to these ass clowns here?"

Looking over at the 2 men in the right-hand ditch, he waved at them and they waved back. At the blast from the tank, one of them whooped.

"Yeah! Get some! Let the fuckin' tank do the work!" one shouted. He was dressed in a blue jeans, black T-shirt, vest with LBE and helmet. A typical biker or merc "outfit". He was armed with an M16A2, like his buddy.

Re: Undercover Operations

Tyler could tell it was the same launcher they'd supplied to the bikers. Actually, it was more like some of the parts were supplied by them, they tried not to sell complete weapons because they could be used against government forces. But he guessed the launcher was operational and he knew how to use it.

After a moment, the smoke over the tank in the intersection began to lift. There was more gunfire, it was obvious someone was taking potshots at the tank. It traversed it's turret away from

There was a tremendous crash-BOOM in the direction of the tank as it fired at something in the trees off to its left. Probably at Conklin, the sniper, who'd been harassing it. The surrounding trees wobbled back and forth with the detonation of the 100mm round, dirt flew up, leaves and stripped branches were flung up into the air. After a pause there was an even larger explosion as something impacted the left side of the tank and detonated. This explosion was even larger, a flash of sparks and blossom of thick white smoke, more surrounding debris was kicked up. The effects were uncertain because although it did hit the side hull, it was the side away from them. The tank didn't do anything dramatic for a few seconds, then the turret started to traverse back towards the store where Belanger and his detachment were holed up.

There was another flash and explosion as a second round impacted the turret and the tank was again enveloped by white smoke. The thump of the shock wave thumped them a second time. It was a second HESH round. The smoke cleared within seconds but the turret had stopped traversing.

Re: Undercover Operations

Way off, about a half-block north of the intersection, there was a "thump!" and one smoke round went off in the middle of the street, followed by another in a few seconds. Smoke started covering the road, blocking line-of-sight north just past the intersection of 56 Ave and 248 St.

They could also hear vehicles moving around, not likely biker/mercenaries but friendlies like Rook (Iltis), Knight (Cougar) and Bishop (Humvee). A couple seemed to be moving up or around 56 Ave. Another seemed to be moving up behind them, on 54 Ave towards 248 St.
