Re: OOC4

Lol.

Does someone want to volunteer to be the group bean-counter?  It comes with perks.
Probably.

That seems fine!

I am never bothered by helping players with questions and so on. I may not always be paying attention, however.

Thanks,

Cool.  That would mean I'd need peeps to PM me with their group or otherwise donated gear.

Re: OOC4

I figured peeps would track their own gear while I would track group stuff like food & fuel & some group ammo or armament.  Having it all centralized in a spread sheet makes it way easier.

I see. Too bad there's no easy way to have a post that everyone can edit. I would like to post a summary so that everyone knows what's shared. (Technically, most military grade weapons, explosives, etc. will not be personally owned.) Once I have all the donated dice and an idea what tables to roll on I'll do so and post the results.

Thanks,

Tony

The spreadsheet can be accessed by everyone, and I may be able to set it so everyone can edit it too (I’m not super-familiar with Google Drive).

Just to reassure everyone, stuff is going on behind the scenes. That said I am getting busier at work as we are ramping up operations and preparing for the return of our students to on-campus learning. So that has slowed things a little!

Re: OOC4

I'm currently reading David Poyer's "Deep War". Not far in, just a couple of chapters. Apparently is a long series of books but this one seems to stand alone quite nicely so I thought I'd give it a shoot.

Basically, the war against China turns dire. After the United States suffers a devastating nuclear attack, and facing food shortages, power outages, cyber and AI assaults, and a wrecked economy, Admiral Dan Lenson leads an allied force assigned to turn the tide of war in the Pacific, using precisely targeted missiles and high-tech weapons systems.

But as the campaign begins, the entire Allied military and defense network is compromised by "Jade Emperor", a powerful Chinese artificial intelligence system that seems to anticipate and counter every move. While Dan strives to salvage the battle plan, his wife Blair helps coordinate strategy in Washington, DC (what could go possibly wrong, eh!), Marine sergeant Hector Ramos fights in an invasion of Taiwan, and Navy SEAL master chief Teddy Oberg begins a desperate journey into central China.

On the Teddy scenario it seems that they want to resurrect the old Afghanistan resistance days of the 1980s but this time against the Chinese. In the initial supply of weapons for the rebels they decide "to stick with the AK platform" with the idea simplifying logistics around the 7,62 x 39 mm. So they get AKs and RPDs and of course the ubiquitous RPGs.

Funny how the old Degtyarev makes a comeback. Apparently the old workhorse still around in more or less obscure conflicts but in limited numbers. Although in logistical terms it will make more sense to use the RPK it was fun to see that.

Re: OOC4

Cool.

I need to buy a new copy of Team Yankee to reread.

There was also some book about a second Korean War I read in HS that was really good, but I can't remember the title.  I remember it followed several different characters, including an M1 tank crew (kind of like Team Yankee).

Re: OOC4

Yeah, Team Yankee is a must and a worth re-read.

I'm not much myself into current WWIII fiction but David Poyer really follows the accurate path and so far seems entertaining. The amazing amount of information available nowadays on the internet makes a huge difference with past authors.

On the nonfiction path I'm currently almost finished with two books side by side that complement each other quite well: "Shia revival" by Vali Nasr and "ISIS Apocalypse   the history,  strategy and doomsday vision of the Islamic State " by William McCants.

Nice.  I have had very little time to read for pleasure lately, but I have been working through the BOLO series, and before that a slew of Warhammer 40k fiction.  I'd particularly recommend the Inquisitor trilogies from Abnett & the Gaunt's Ghosts seires, especially the early ones.

In reply to Eric C. Wright (msg # 945):

BOLO, I have heard of that.. who writes it?

I have heard it is something like Saberhagen's Beserker series, which started in the early 60's, then had a resurgence in the 80's when (I think) BOLO came out.

Good?

Re: OOC4

In reply to Eric C. Wright (msg # 947):

Berserker, not Berserk.

It's about intelligent self-replicating robots an alien race built to fight a war for them, and kept looking for things to fight long after the race that made them ceased to exist.

"Berserker Blue Death" was the first I ever read, and the most memorable for me was "Berserker Man", because of the drones used to fight one of the berserkers were loaded with AI personalities from Earth's past, famous aces.  The only one to return was "Von Richtofen", who insisted they "Paint it red".

And ah yes, I am familiar with Laumer, most of his stuff is mid 80's to early to mid 2000's.
