Re: Scoobythulu

Ive played Toon. It's basically a poor mans version of GURPS. Not really that good IMO. Cartoon action hour is really a perfect blend of detail and simplicity and works quite nicely with with pbp format of rpol.

Those are my thoughts anyway.

Re: Scoobythulu

Thinking about this more, I think it is important to use CoC. Since this is a mashup, you are jamming together two incongruous pieces. The characters are from a comical cartoon environment and the setting is lovecraftian horror. Since the characters carry with them the cartooniness, I think you want the rules to carry the setting and feel. If you used toon or cartoon action hour, I think you'd be skewing things too cartoony. But using CoC, and adding a little comical flare in the skills (see stats in previous post), you are bringing comical cartoon characters into the lovecraftian horror world.

Re: Scoobythulu

I have always wanted to run a Buffy-style game where the slayers are twelve schoolgirls in an old house in Paris that is covered in vines.

That's not really the same thing as scooby doo.

Re: Scoobythulu

There have been several Scooby/Cthulhu mashups run at Origins over the years, including other similar games, such as Gilligan's Island/Cthulhu.

Cool. Does someone on rpol want to run one?

Re: Scoobythulu

Still looking for someone to take this on. There seems to be a good interest in the concept, but anyone serious enough to run coc seems to be shying away.

Re: Scoobythulu

Part of the reason myself and other CoC GMs have shied away is that while it is a really good premise and has the potential to be a REALLY fun game (a friend of mine SOOO wants to play Shaggy), it doesn't mesh well with the regular CC setting and rules.

CoC is a very grim and dark setting, it just doesn't mesh well with CoC.  You either do one well and butcher the other or you do both poorly.  Scooby-Do doesn't really work as a grimdark game and CoC doesn't stand well as a lighthearted campaign.

Re: Scoobythulu

In reply to pfarland (msg # 17):

I beg to differ.

CoC is just Basic Roleplaying (BRP), with Sanity rules. It's only a d100 conflict resolution system.

What makes a Cthulhu campaign horrific is the GM's descriptions, the personalities of the cultists, the nasty monsters against which you have no chance, and the odd spells.

Playing the Scooby gang in an adventure where the bad guys aren't just wearing rubber masks is the fun part. You could use BRP to play a straight Scooby-Doo cartoon episode, but the suggestion is to make the adversaries real Mythos figures.

How you adjust the mix between Saturday morning cartoon vibe and HPL  is simply a matter of taste. And as we've seen in the thread, there are plenty of people who think it's a good mix.

I plan to run something face-to-face here at home with my own group at some point. Maybe after I've written something up and run it, I'd consider running the game here on RPOL. But don't hold your breath, that wouldn't be for quite a while if it were to happen at all.

Re: Scoobythulu

I agree.  I've run and played in a lot of CoC mashups, and they don't have to be grim and gritty to be fun.  The Frosty the Snowman scenario I ran was hugely fun and kooky, but also pretty horrifying.

I think a Scooby/CoC mix would be a lot of fun.

I think it is the fact they don't easily mesh is what makes this concept so appealing.

Re: Scoobythulu

In reply to Baron (msg # 18):

When I was talking about it not meshing well with the CoC setting and rules, I was talking about the rules specific to CoC, not the general BRP rules.

I do think that if it were done right, Scoobythulu could be amazingly great, don't get me wrong.  From a long time CoC GM and avid mythos fan I see the problem in doing it right.  The whole thing about it not meshing well will either make it a wonderful game or a really poor one.

I doubt I could do the characters justice, so I wouldn't want to play, but I would love to watch it unfold if it was done well.  If so I would be a dedicated lurker for certain.  I wish I could run the game, I just know I couldn't do it right.  I think that's what the issue is.  There's been quite a few people all for it.  I think most potential GMs won't want to run it because of the same fear I have.  Either overdoing the general darkness of the mythos or turning it into 'stupid comedy hour' and ruining the whole thing.

I say keep the thread going though.  Maybe a GM will come along that feels that they can do it.  If that's the case I'd love to lurk.

Re: Scoobythulu

For what it's worth, I, too, think this idea is worth pursuing. Unfortunately, like pfarland, I'd only be a lurker. My recollection of the characters isn't recent or detailed enough to be a player, and I've never played CoC, let alone GMed it.

Having said that, I'm sure that if I were familiar with the rules I could run such a game. I think the trick is not to take it too seriously - this isn't something that is going to "undermine your standing as a serious movie director and ruin your career", it's a bit of fun to keep a few friends amused for a while.

If someone wants to run the game, get a group of players together, ask them what they want from the game, then provide it. That's all there is to it.

You could run ScoobyHamlet if you wanted to - who cares what the Shakespearean Actors Guild thinks of it? It's a game. If the players have fun, that's all that matters.

Just do it!

Re: Scoobythulu

From a mythos standpoint, scooby doo actually fits pretty well. There is even an episode of mystery inc called the shrieking madness that pays homage to lovecraft. There have also been published cross over pieces made by chaosium. See link below.

http://rpggeek.com/thread/575470/scooby-doo-cthulhu

From a rules standpoint, the only thing you have to figure out is sanity. The link in the original post has stats for the characters. As someone already said, one needs to balance the comical aspects of the characters with driving Freddy permanently insane. The setting is already setup to match a scooby doo investigation. It is the mixture of comedy and horror that is the trick - but there are scads of movie references to help find that balance. This is the fun of mashups.

Scooby-thulu ... I love the idea. But like everyone else I just do not have the time to take on another game.

I was considering a "The Night Stalker" game. I loved that show, it was soooo 70's and Karl Kolchak was a hoot. It would also fit really well as a thulu game.

Re: Scoobythulu

It sounds interesting, I'm not sure I could handle it either.  I've only briefly played on game of CoC.  I'd probably drop or alter sanity to perhaps just a fear level.  I'd be happy to play Scooby.  I ran a Gnoll who spoke like Scooby in a 2e AD&D game which was hi-larious.
