Western D&D?

Anyone running a western-themed 3.5 or Pathfinder game?

Re: Western D&D?

Yeah, anyone running a western-themed D&D game or want to? You've got 2 players now.

The concept surely sounds interesting.

Re: Western D&D?

An idea might be something along the lines of Deadwood or Hell on Wheels.  The town doctor (cleric), likes to visit the local saloon, where a singer from out East (bard) keeps the rowdies entertained.  The sheriff and his deputies (fighters) maintain the peace, while everyone keeps a wary eye on that crazy trapper (ranger) who comes into town on occasion.

Low armor (maybe the sheriff and deputies 'mount up' with a mail shirt if necessary) more swords and knifes and crossbows than gunslingers.  Magic is more important, so meanest outlaw might be a warlock.   So more spellslingers than gunslingers.

Very broad ideas there, but something along those lines.  So instead of a party of adventurers, the players are part of a town or outlying ranches, going about their lives.

This is something friend and I did in tabletop all the time. It easier to adapt than it sounds, an the mythic American west is a perfect setting for adventurers. Quite doable.

Re: Western D&D?

I may actually consider running this for my first game on this site. Two sticking points; I am only just learning PF, and I would be running an evil game, possibly a party of humanoid outlaws or bandits.

Would that be within the scope of what the OP as looking for? If not, I shall kep my hat in the players' ring.

Re: Western D&D?

Sort of. An outlaw gang isn't a bad idea, but the last few times I played in something like that it became a 'heist of the week' scenario, where we were either planning a heist, committing the heist, or running from the law, with very little else in between.

Re: Western D&D?

The dwarves could be the rail-barons and/ or prospectors. You could easily add firearms. Sidewinder Recoiled has all the old west weapons stats for 3.5 already and add magic as well. Elves could still be bound to the land like the Indians and use bows and things because they hate technology. Some some thoughts. Cheers

Re: Western D&D?

In response to msg #7:

It can go that way. Hopefully, by adding the cohesive element of a unifying race/family, for example having the players be the surviving remnants of an orcish tribe, I could keep it from devolving the way of the evil game where everybody sells everybody else upriver, and also have a starting point for a greater story arc. A long and difficult revenge against the perpetrators of the massacre springs immediately to mind.

Let's give it a few days and see if anyone wants to help us do something more traditional, but if I end up being all we get, I should be game.

That'll make three games I'm in, two I very much hope to be in as soon as possible, and two I've offered to run (this one and one over in interest check.) I don't want to get involved in too much to handle, especially if I'm going to be responsible for GMing.

EDIT: One less to play in. For reasons I won't get into, the gentleman running one game has frustrated me greatly, and I don't think it's going to be a good fit. Now is the polite time to drop it, before my character is introduced. On the other hand, I couldn't help myself and put up a second interest check, so we'll see what happens.

Re: Western D&D?

Alright, I've read Sidewinder Recoil.  Had no clue that this handbook exists.  It really is d20 rules and adding fairly easy to understand rules on handguns / rifles and feats, skills and character classes in the old west.

An easy way to add anything magical would be either gestalt that class or multiclass (for example: Bounty Hunter / Wizard  or Grifter / Rogue or Grifter / Bard.)  With the way they wrote it out,  with  similar skills and feats with 3.5, it is actually pretty easy  to do  either.  Keep the D&D classes intact, and you've got a weird west theme in a fantasy land.

Re: Western D&D?

I actually started doing something like this a long time ago with D&D 3.5, but nowadays if I did it i'd use 13th Age, 5E, Dungeon World - literally anything but D&D 3.5 or PF. They just run too slow in play by post, and I should note that the 5E DMG has firearms statistics for firearms from various eras.

Maybe you should run Barsalas. I have no access to that book.

Re: Western D&D?

Been a bit, but looking to see if there might be fresh interest in something like this. I know Pathfinder has firearms rules, which could work, but I think half the fun is the Wild West setting.

Re: Western D&D?

Toyed with a similar idea in PF about a year ago. The game was set in the United States and we used folklore to explain away a lot of things. Medium and heavy armor were converted into "trinkets" like a lucky rabbits foot that made gave you a dodge bonus to AC but also somehow made you slower; strange magic I know but it worked. Magic was mostly dead so no wizened mages but set the cap at 3rd-4th level spells and you get your tolerable spellslingers, especially if you make all magic implement based (magic guns?). As for magical creatures they were few and fair between with anything that could pass as human living under a global glamour(permanent Screen spell) and anything else showing up as strange tall tales like the man who fought a twister and won when in reality a Marshal (Inquisitor) killed an air elemental.

Just some thoughts.
