Keep on the Borderlands / Caves of Chaos

I just realized (by looking at my RPOL Profile Biography line) that this year marks the 30th year anniversary of when my twin brother and I began Roleplaying.

We were 10 years old when our father brought home the Basic Dungeons and Dragons Box Set that included the Module B2 (The Keep on the Borderlands and The Caves of Chaos).

Unfortunately my father thought that my twin and I were too young to learn the game and he, my mother and older brother (who was 12) sat down and drew up characters and began to play.  As far as I can recall they only sat down the one time and decided it was not for them and it went into a box in a closet.

Of course, when you are told you can't do something it makes you all the more interested in doing it and my twin and I snuck the game out of that box and taught ourselves how to play.  This sparked the beginning of our now 30 years of game playing, many of those years spent right here on RPOL.  We had just about every Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms novel, huge wall size maps of Faerun and Waterdeep plastered on our walls and a love for the dice that still thrives today.

We are looking for an old school GM to strike up a 3.5 conversion of this module to help us celebrate our 30 year anniversary.

Here are our parameter requests:

- Willing to play in either 3.5, Pathfinder or 5E (If a GM is willing to teach the system as we would both be new to 5E.  We have access to the Players Guide but have never played the system)

- Just the 2 of us (Balthazar and Sardis) playing 2 gestalt characters each (Me: Dwarven Paladin//Cleric and Half-Orc Barbarian//Sorcerer, Sardis: Elven Ranger//Druid and Halfling Rogue//Wizard).  We know our dedication and posting rates and would prefer not to have to rely on other players to post and potentially hold a game up or derail it all together.

- If 3.5 then almost entirely 3.5 Core Character Creation with some Variant rules thrown in (an example would be Recharge Magic http://www.d20srd.org/srd/vari...ic/rechargeMagic.htm )

- A GM able to reproduce the original Basic Modules with the savvy to make it their own.  It has been 25 years since I last looked at that campaign and my memory is not what it used to be but it would be nice for a GM to be able to incorporate what is there and add to it.  If a GM was willing to take this campaign beyond this module and take these characters farther up the advancement ladder on subsequent campaigns of their choosing it would not go unappreciated.

- Game world is not a concern except if the GM is willing to consider keeping the game going after the completion of these two modules then the Forgotten Realms would be our preference as it is where we have gamed 80+% of the time over the last 30 years.  (Shadowdale / Dalelands region was our main stomping grounds) NOTE: In Shadowdale, Castle Krag could easily become the Keep and Watcher's Knoll could become the location of the Caves.

We have our fingers crossed that we can get a GM on board and get a game going soon.

Keep on the Borderlands / Caves of Chaos

If my memory serves correctly, the year was 1994.  I was a recently displaced teenager from the deep south still adjusting to the far more fierce winter chill of the northern midwest.  Having endured the majority of an awkward first school year in this strange new climate, I found myself associating with a group of bookish fellows whom had quickly become my newest friends.  It was within this juvenile fraternity that I experienced my very first Dungeons & Dragons published adventure... The Keep on the Borderlands.

I remember my statistic rolls were particularly bad for the elf I chose to play and it was maybe 20 minutes into the adventure when I failed a stealth roll at a crucial juncture.  Needless to say, Marino the Elf did not make it to level 2.  Btw, yes indeed, I named my first D&D character after a Hall of Fame NFL quarterback.

With that bit of history offered as preface, let me just say that I am more than moderately interested in taking up this mantle for you guys.  I have actually borrowed from those classics in games I have DMed throughout the past 20 something years.  It's been a lengthy hiatus for me as of now so I would need a chance to kick the dust off the DM wheels so to speak.  Couple of queries first.

What sort of pace do the two of you hope to have on a scale from multiple posts daily to a post every other day?  (By pace I essentially mean how quickly of a response are you looking for from a DM)

Would you consider yourselves more roll-centric or role-centric?  That is to say, do you like your games with lots of fudge or lots of depth?

Keep on the Borderlands / Caves of Chaos

Greetings and well met Cataclysm,

I like to post daily to every other day but am use to the ebb and flow of life here on RPOL and am farely patient.  I do not fret much about GM or player absences of a week.  More if it is uncommon.  Notice is always nice.

Sardis and I have grown into power gamers over the last 30 years.  I myself have grown weary of power gaming and long for an epic quest more focused on the story than the numbers.  Like I indicated in the request I would like to see the Keep on the Borderlands be a starting point for something more longer lasting.  I have yet to take a character from 1st to Epic and would wish for a GM with that kind of staying power and long term vision for his/her game.

Again, the world is not entirely important but our preference is the Shadowdale region of the Forgotten Realms.

A balance of fudge and depth would be preferable to a concentration on either one.

Keep on the Borderlands / Caves of Chaos

I tip my hat at thee, Sir Cataclysm, for considering GM'ing this game.

I too enjoy posting daily, but am also aware of the limitations of RPOL especially when considered in conjunction with time zones, personal lives, work lives, and the overall ability of GM's and players to post regularly on a consistent basis.  So, that having been said, I foresee periods of rapid posting interspersed with gaps of a day or three, depending on the personal lives of those involved.

Having done both roleplay and rollplay, I have found I prefer a balance of the two.

The following is by no means an expectation...lets consider it more of a wish or a hope...but (should the Borderlanders/Caves of Chaos campaign succeed with wonderful results enjoyed by all and a desire to continue is shared) I could forsee adventuring with the eventual goal of entering into the 4 module 'Bloodstone' set of campaigns (converted to 3.0/3.5/pathfinder) designed to take players from 15th level to epic.

Anywho, looking forward to hearing from you.

Keep on the Borderlands / Caves of Chaos

Would you be willing to expand the system options?

I'm trying out some old TSR modules using the Cortex system right now.

Thanks for your interest sbodmann but we don't feel cortex is the right system for us.

I would like to expand the systems options to include BECMI (Rules Cyclopedia).
