Halo

Is there a game out there or would someone be interested to run a Halo game?

Halo

In reply to Hakazu (msg # 1):

Interesting question. What do you think a Halo game would be about? What would you like to see in one?

I once thought (briefly) that one could run a decent Halo game, or near facsimile, using the Mongoose Traveller rules. It has powered armor, alongside normal firearms and some energy weaponry. I never really tried it, though.

Halo

Really good question, playing as a Spartan is what everyone would like but a marine during the first years of the Covenant years would be interesting.

Never played Mongoose Traveller but is willing to learn ;)

Halo

I'd be interested in playing, Spartan or Marine. Any rules system works as well.

Interesting indeed. One thing that characterizes the stories of Marines (and actually pretty much everyone in the line of fire besides Master Chief) is widespread death. Sometimes it's really meaningful, like a ship taking a plasma blast so other ships can survive, but a lot of it is just sudden and meaningless, and the driving force for the survivors. So, I'd recommend coming up with a way for that to happen to the players' characters, while keeping the players involved in the game.

That will be a problem to solve, after all it's not fun to see one's characters die all the time and creating a new one takes a long time.

This might be a good system, and I would be willing to consider running a game using that system, let me know what you guys think in the thread :)

Re: Halo

The game does sound interesting, but would it suit Halo really? For a game night or alike I would totally agree but hopefully the game will run on for longer...and yet it have a easy way to make the character.

Re: Halo

What do we consider "easy to make "?

Savage Worlds is also relatively simple to build a character, but many struggle to understand the mechanics since its nothing like d20 systems.

Re: Halo

I'm open to a lot of systems.

Savage Worlds was my first system ever so I'm partial to it, and character creation is not difficult at all its very straightforward. There are also some online resources for those who don't have the rules. I'm also extremely familiar with the rules and how they work, so GMing this system will be easiest.

D20 has some online srds and is a pretty common system that has some depth to it, but more depth also means more character creation. However, it shouldn't be to complicated or difficult.

FATE is a popular system, but most people tend to hate it or love it, so there's that. It also depends on what kind of game you want, nitty gritty realistic or more heroic?

Finally, there is homebrewing something ...

But that's just what I can think of, there might be other better systems!

Re: Halo

If you are most used to Savage Worlds, we should perhaps use that one. As it would solve many problems and probably easier for you to explain it to the players ;)

Re: Halo

Hakazu:

Well, don't generalize this too hard. That depends a lot on the kind of game and what the players are bought into.

Players in a Halo game would really have to understand what Halo is like. Lots of people die in Halo stories. Ships-full, fleets-full, cities-full, planets-full, galaxies-full. All but one of the Spartan-IIs died.

The focus for a game, I think, would have to be on meaningful death. It's one thing to play Marines who are on their butts in their ship when it takes a plasma bolt, but it's another to play Marines whose ship makes a suicide run to make sure they're able to make an insertion to a Covenant cruiser in order to capture it or destroy it. The Marines might be killed to the last person, but even then they can still trigger the overload. Their deaths would still have had meaning. Or, maybe they fail, and the next group of characters starts out being briefed on this, because that failure sets up their next mission.

Hakazu:
and creating a new one takes a long time.

That's a solved problem, as long as everyone is ready to be on-board with it.

For one thing, while characters in Halo have different personalities, they usually don't have hugely different skill sets. There could be a set number of different characters (Marine, pilot, tech, etc.) and a single pre-generated character sheet for each. When one dies, the player gets handed another one to name, and figure out a basic personality for. There'd be little reason to go in depth, since they wouldn't be expected to last long.

Anyway, I'm still up for playing. I've played Savage Worlds and it hasn't impressed me, but I'm not opposed to it, if there is a free set of the basic rules available.

Re: Halo

I'm planning on running a military sci-fi thing using Savage Worlds soon. It's not Halo, but it'll be heavily inspired by Halo, as well as Starship Troopers, Aliens, and similar. Once I get it up, I can notify you if you'd like.

Re: Halo

This sounds interesting.

I would be up to playing this

PROVIDED

the game is not 'full canon'. Because, if we stay 'its halo but with some alterations.

If the game stays full canon, then everybody who is NOT master Chief dies, that is what comes with the whole 'its a first person shooter with 1 ( later 2) protagonist(s)

If we adjust the lore so that there is a team of Spartans and say 'its this X number of Spartans, not justr master cheif' then that will be great

As for rules, I do not care. But, there is one caveat. You cannot have a gritty and lethal rule system ( GURPS comes to mind) as you are supposed to be a super soldier capable of laying waste to entire platoons.

D20 [modern/future], does that pretty well, but it is not the only system.

Star Wars saga edition is there in as well, its basically d20 future revised edition, LOL

Traveler as already stated\

3:16 Carnage among the stars is more of a boardgame with light rpg elements (or the converse) But could possibly work.

There is also Godlike, just kinda ignore the superpower bit and it works OR not to some extent.

that about all I can think of off the top of my head.

I assumed we would not be playing Spartans.

I mean, it could work, even canon, if it were either early days, or later with the Spartan IIIs and IVs. I'm just much more interested in playing regular humans (ODSTs at most) facing long odds. That, more than laying waste to the Covenant, would evoke Halo for me.

In reply to engine (msg # 20):

While playing as Spartans would be fun, I also believe that would not be the best game. I would also prefer a ODST game, as we would be above the grunts but still not Spartans.

I'm open to any GM system, but might have to learn it to be able to play it ;)

Re: Halo

well, if it is ODST, then GURPS with some sci-fi themed supplement would probably fits the best.

There is GURPS: Sci FI, GURPS: Space, GURPS: Ultra Tech, and GURPS: future
One can mix and match as they see fit.
