Just a heads-up, I too will be travelling Tue-Thur this week. I should have internet access though.

In reply to E.N.S. Ringgenberg (msg # 939):

It was powerful pleasant hanging out with the professor for an afternoon at the Wynkoop Saloon and Delaney's Smoke Shack in Denver.

Nice to meet a RPoL pard in person, share some Barleycorn, a cheroot, and a few good stories ("18 club-footed dwarves . . .").

Re: travel

Indeed, professor, Saturday at the GABF was brilliant.

--------

As you know, I have mentioned the Fear the Boot podcast in previous OOC messages. Travis checked out their two-part episode about Shadowrun 5.0 (and if memory serves he listened to some other ones on his road trip). And I think ENS listened to one about RPG from the military man's perspective.

They have recently changed their format a little (shorter episodes, with a better concentration on the topic).

I listened to Ep 315 the other day (from 10/15/13, the most recent episode), titled "playing the good guys." It was an interesting topic that I think connects to the current situation in this game.

If you've never listened to FTB before, or liked previous episodes, this 34 minute episode is worth a listen.

Traveling on business again this week. (Reached my destination tonight). I will log in morning/evening.

As it stands, there's not much for the Judge to do, until the PCs conclude their private meeting . . . .

In reply to Jake Richardson (msg # 544):

It took a moment for ENS to catch on to Travis' "sporty" comment, but his suspicions are confirmed when Jake moves to the window.

Sheriff, do you think this Rasmin character is likely to make things, as Travis said, "sporty"?

A disembodies voice says, "More likely that Travis Sunday makes things sporty."

Moving Things Along

Teddy Fargas as a deus ex machina -- who'd a' thunk it? :)

Edit: Or, mayhaps . . .

"Knock, knock."

"Who's there?"

"A deus ex machina."

"Bullshit! Who is it, really?"

"Okay, okay. It's just me, Teddy Fargas."

<A moment of silence . . .>

"What the hell? I thought these Knock-knock things was s'posed to be funny."

Re: Moving Things Along

In reply to Jake Richardson (msg # 952):

It was humorous, indeed, and I also enjoyed it.

But since I was an English major, I have to respond to the use of 'deus ex machina. I don't think Teddy Fargas' appearance can be portrayed as such in literary terms. His appearance didn't resolve anything, nor was his appearance contrived, which are integral elements of the definition I learned as an undergraduate. A plot device to advance action? Yes. A resolution of a problem? I don't see how his appearance resolved anything. Contrived? Not in my view. The deputy sent a telegram for which he expected a reply. When the reply came, the telegraph operator made an effort to inform the deputy that a reply had arrived. The Judge didnt' need to contrive that series of events, he just needed to decide when it would happen (which I decided when JEB commissioned the telegram and was just waiting for the time to come).

So, although I get the joke (especially the knock, knock part), I don't think characterizing this as deus ex machina is valid from a literary perspective.

If applied to Rojas, and not to Teddy Fargas, that would be accurate. The Judge will note that Rojas gave no lecture, until he was asked.

In reply to James E. Beauregard (msg # 608):

I suggest that we leave by one of the side exits on this floor... perhaps we can even leave undetected. Jake, can you tell if Rasmin and his group are watching both sides of the building?

Judge, what can Jake see from his vantage point in regards to ENS's question?

Thanks.

Re: Moving Things Along

In reply to Jake Richardson (msg # 959):

As per the map, there is a window facing north, from which Jake had been keeping a vigil--and from which he had seen Rasmin and a couple of hunters at the edge of Haverty's corral. That vantage point doesn't provide any view of the sides of the hotel.

There is a window to west, which overlooks the alley between Planters and the Bank. Jake hasn't looked through that window, yet.

Re: Moving Things Along

Waiting for JEB's reply to Pistlethwaite. The deputy should assume he is near the telegraph office by the time he responds, and advance the plot accordingly.
