Re: Moving Things Along
In reply to Jake Richardson (msg # 952):
It was humorous, indeed, and I also enjoyed it.
But since I was an English major, I have to respond to the use of 'deus ex machina. I don't think Teddy Fargas' appearance can be portrayed as such in literary terms. His appearance didn't resolve anything, nor was his appearance contrived, which are integral elements of the definition I learned as an undergraduate. A plot device to advance action? Yes. A resolution of a problem? I don't see how his appearance resolved anything. Contrived? Not in my view. The deputy sent a telegram for which he expected a reply. When the reply came, the telegraph operator made an effort to inform the deputy that a reply had arrived. The Judge didnt' need to contrive that series of events, he just needed to decide when it would happen (which I decided when JEB commissioned the telegram and was just waiting for the time to come).
So, although I get the joke (especially the knock, knock part), I don't think characterizing this as deus ex machina is valid from a literary perspective.
