Chapter 1: Jonas Comes Marching Home

Despite the cramped deck space, when the War Eagle pushes westward, you can all exhale and look to the promise of the journey. Around you, people of all ilk abound. You hear smatterin's of a few languages and the general mood is one of optimism.

The pleasant Paducah morning remains--with the sun tiltin' toward the horizon and the river breeze givin' a small measure of comfort. You can't help but think the feeling will be short-lived as the afternoon wears on and your movement is severely restricted, but the moment puts you in fine fettle.

Re: Chapter 1: Jonas Comes Marching Home

Meriwether puts forth a smile despite the cramp quarters & being aboard a ship once more. He points behind them as the city slowly disappears in the distance.

"Well Mr. Osterfeld! So begins our trek. At least our journey has begun. Inside a week, mayhaps a bit more, you should be home then. It does my heart good to think of a new beginning. The west is before us now. How do you feel ole chap?"

OOC: Sorry about the lack of orange. Meriwether

Re: Chapter 1: Jonas Comes Marching Home

"The new beginning you speak of may well be for the children.  My heart and mind are with my family, while my body is here with all of you.

"I long for the quiet.  Explosions are terribly violent and leaves the body wracked with pain.  Irrespective of the distance you have, even your soul is left shaken.  Still, I feel my work during this war actually helped to save lives.  The bunkers we built, the bridges we demolished, the roads we tore up, all saved a life or two at least.

"I never saw the fight.  We were taught stealth and ordinance.  Gratefully, I never fired a single round from my pistol.

"Still, awful mess, wouldn't you say.  Meriwether, if I may?

"A new beginning indeed."

"Count yer blessings Chance," Silas replies, "Seein' the front line action was a terrible thing. I've done and seen things I won't likely forget to my dyin' days. Greener pastures ahead fellas...greener pastures."

Artemus doesn’t care for the crush of humanity one bit. He worries about Owen and Abby being trampled, and thieving river rats helping themselves to ill-gotten gain.

Better keep my eyes and ears open . . .

Re: Chapter 1: Jonas Comes Marching Home

"Didn't rightly like it most of the time, but I did whatever the brass told me to do. Did some shootin' like the most of us, busted up a Yank or three me and ol' Hank here did." he says as he pats his Henry rifle. "My shootin' was the tool they used. Thought I'd put one right through Edwin's noggin' I did until I spotted him millin' 'bout the crowd the other day."

Silas turns his head over towards Travis, "Brought me out of my funk it surely did, I wasn't rightly lookin' forward to tellin' Aunt Mildred that I blew Edwin's head off."

Re: Chapter 1: Jonas Comes Marching Home

Sounds like Cole will stay where he is with Buck and Bart. There doesn't seem anything to be gained by trying to move closer to Chance and Meriwether. He carefully checks his belongings and makes sure his guns are securely fastened in his holster. Lastly, he checks to make sure his money is secure and then settles in for the long trip.

Cole looks to see if Abby is near. With her being so small he is concerned that the crowd might overwhelm her. If she seems the least bit uncomfortable, Cole will make the offer to her brother to lift her up and place her on Buck to get her away from the press of the crowd.
