Xamador: Meditations

Once outside the thick, high walls of Qorlander Bay, the three companions search for a spot for the druids to meditate quietly while the archer stands guard.  The area is in many ways reminiscent of Midrath Koar, but in an older brother sort of way.  The trees are ancient, gnarled things rising up ten stories high.  Their leafy canopies completely obscuring the sky.  Xamador is less of a jungle and more of an old-growth forest.  The air is cool and slightly damp, refreshing to the lungs.  The smell of loam and flowers and spicy evergreen wood permeates everything and a taste of danger, sleeping and undisturbed for the moment, tantalizes the tips of their tongues.

It is peaceful, contrary to the warnings of imminent, powerful danger given by the guards as the three of you departed.  The sounds of the city, already dampened by the thick wall, fade rapidly as you disappear among the trees.  At last there is a suitable spot to rest.  A clearing with several fallen (felled?) trees and their trunks allow places to sit if one is so inclined.  The dirt and dead leaves are soft enough to sit on as well, but there is no grass sprung up, even after the length of time these tress must have been lying like this.

There are berries on several bushes, a reddish orange type that grows in individual round berries as clusters.  Other fruits, none familiar, and nuts grow in the trees around the clearing as well.  If edible, they might provide a decent afternoon snack.

Re: Xamador: Meditations

Adryn could have strolled through the wilds for hours without even noticing the passage of time. The comfort granted by his surroundings made it easy for the venture to the clearing to seem like mere moments.

He quickly found a nice soft spot to rest, and sat down. This was the first moment he really had any peace to sit and meditate since his capture months ago. As he entered his meditations, he began to reminisce over the events that brought him here... the Saelibi, the loss of a companion, the attack of the Saelithist, and being held captive by an army of kobolds. He never would have dreamed his training would end up taking him so far from home, but yet here he was, in the wilds of Xamador on a quest that had just barely begun.

After a while, Adryn let his thoughts drift off... let his mind empty, and just sat and listened as the conversation within the Xamador wilds unfolded.

Re: Xamador: Meditations

Hot caves, kobold imprisonment, and the hectic crossing over a massive body of water had served to make this moment one of the most beautiful that Aethen had experienced in quite some time.  The sights and smells of the old forest were intoxicating, calling forth memories of the home tree and its neighbors.

Looking up, the canopy above was not too high to scale.  Flexing his fingers, Aethen grasps the massive trunk and, awkwardly at first, begins to scale the forest giant. While it had been a while since his last ascent, the skill quickly returns and he makes speedy progress upward.

Coming close to the top, Aethen finds a large branch and sits with his back against the main trunk.  The height allowed rays of light to play over his fur and a light breeze ruffled the leaves above.  He closed his eyes and drank it in.

"Addiyr, I thank you for this moment."  Aethen whispers the prayer under his breath, swaying with the high boughs.  "Please continue to tend our Paths, be our guide, and protect us from those who would do harm."

Aethen enjoys several minutes before he continues.  "Addiyr, one of your own used her final breath in this world to tell me of the Evangiel and my need to heed their message.  Please help me understand their Path, and how mine can aid theirs."  He begins to say more, but checks himself and contemplates as the tree sways.

Re: Xamador: Meditations

Peace.  A calm like that of the happiest day, when one truly stops all of the work, clears their mind of all concerns, and truly takes the time to soak in the pleasure of growing things.  A contentment felt after spending a day planting in the field and knowing that hard labor will bear great fruit.  Few moments come like this, each to be cherished without concern for its duration.

Then a breeze picks up through the calm of the forest, whispering of calm at first, but taking on distinction as it does not abate.

This blessing of knowledge and wisdom I bestow today on all here who cherish the growing things of the world and the freedom life brings.  The Evangiel speak truth, as you have seen already when Aethen acquired his staff.  You will go to the birth place of magic, a place where the arcane does not work.  There you will find the means to shape magic to the whim of those who wield it.  That power must be handled with great care as it is one of the keys to the means to destroy the world.  Have a care for those who seek knowledge without wisdom to guide it, who seek knowledge for knowledge's sake.  They represent the ultimate chaos, ungoverned by selflessness or even selfishness.

There also you will find the first guardian of life, a being whose death will bring rebirth and a power that must be awakened for the survival of life in the world.  Harness her power wisely and she will lead you to greater wisdom still.

Last, there you will find the first riddle to preserve the humans.  Go in peace my friends.  Save the world.

GM: Each of you receives a +2 to Wisdom for the day, +1 to saves.  If you have spell slots that need to be replenished (or filled because of the WIS bonus) do so now.

Re: Xamador: Meditations

Adryn's eyes snap open as the whispers of the wind pass through his mind, leaving their message behind. If there was ever a doubt about his mission, those doubts were clearly laid to rest now.

Immediately he looks to the trees, searching for Aethen, hoping he had received the same message he just did. Finally, he spotted him perched among the branches high above the ground, but he was still deep in meditation.

Adryn took a moment to decipher the message from the wind, and his first thought turned to the birth place of magic. Where in the world could that place be?? Surely someone would know. His eyes turn towards the city...

Re: Xamador: Meditations

Genovia is surprised to hear the voice in the wind, or maybe the voice was the wind.  In any case there is little doubt the voice is Addiyr's and she is honored to be included.  Never one for true meditation, she sees Adryn rouse from his and smiles at him, sharing in that one look her participation in the message and her grattitude to Adryn's god.

Then she also looks to Aethen to wait for him to finish his meditations.

Re: Xamador: Meditations

Aethen could feel the contented smile creep into his face as the wind delivered its message.  It was the first time he had truly communed with his deity, and he wanted to remember each moment.  The message itself was one of struggle, pain, and death, so the journey to come would likely wear this pleasant memory thin, which encouraged him to commit it to memory even more.

He opens his eyes and surveys the old forest from his height.  Pity there was not more time, these trees certainly had any number of stories to tell.  Standing, he stretched and looked below to see two sets of eyes staring up.  The smile was still there as he began to climb down.

As he dropped to the ground, he walked toward the two quietly.  He knew it was time to leave, but cast his eyes upward to take in the scene one more time.  The city was in the distance, and Aethen started for it.  The smile was still there.

Re: Xamador: Meditations

Looking at the light shining into the clearing, more time has passed than the three first realized.  Three, perhaps four, hours have passed since beginning the meditation, and even for the human who did not technically enter it, she has little notion of the 'missing' time.  However, like her two Anthros companions, she feels well rested like after a good night sleep.

Not even three steps into the trees headed back toward the city, the forest goes suddenly quiet.

GM: Listen, Spot checks and initiative rolls please.  The two former will adjust the latter.

The ambush is potentially frightening due more to the unknown nature of the creatures than for the reality of what the three foreigners see.  Five sleek forms moving to fast to see clearly dart out of the underbrush at the group.

Battle vs. the strange dogs

The dogs race toward the group ignoring Adryn, dividing into three distinct groups as they move.  Two for Adryn, two for Aethen, and one for Genovia.  One by one they charge only to dart past on either side.  As they pass by they each attempt to swipe at the party with their tails.  One hits Adryn and Aethen each and Genovia's manages solid contact as well.  As each tail hits, it sparks a deep, blue, almost too intense to comprehend, but the touch is feather light!  The tail is nothing more than a dense collection of soft filaments that drag across the body as if trying to latch on and draw something out of you.  Yet there is no actual effect seen or felt by any of you.

The attack does nothing.

Re: Battle vs. the strange dogs

There was no pain, thus Aethen was confused as to if he was under attack.  However, a moment of reflection reinforced the fact that this was a fight, because the forest never lied.  And right now the forest was as silent as a grave.

Not sure what could be done against an unknown enemy, Aethen surveys the area.  The aggressors were dogs that had a pack mentality, at first glance, but they were performing some kind of attack that was unknown to him.  Therefore, no telling what other surprises they might have.

Up.  It wasn't a Grondor solution, but Aethen was not aware of many climbing dogs.  He spoke no words, but looked to Adryn and simply pointed upward.  Turning to Genovia, he quickly moves to the nearest trunk and prepares to help her up.

Move action to tree.  Held move action to aid Genovia's climb.

Re: Battle vs. the strange dogs

Seeing his brother's plight, Aethen quickly runs through his options.  The most effective would be magic, but his position on the tree made that....dubious.  However, it would yield the best results were it to work.

He was still on the main trunk, not having reached one of the large branches that were well above the forest floor.  Digging his clawed feet into the bark of the tree, Aethen settles his weight on his legs while he leans against the trunk for balance.  The pose reminded him of meditations in his training, when he was required to sit on his legs, only this time there was no floor.

Concentrating, Aethen grasps the thread in his memory and spins the power into a call for aid.  Aiming it to where the edge comes just to Adryn's feet, he launches the spell.

The strange creatures response gave a little insight into it's nature... enough so, that the others could adjust their tactics.

Adryn announces, "These beasts appear to feed on magic, so they will likely be quite resistant to magical attacks. We either do this the old fashioned way, or we run."

With that said, Adryn's Anthros claws erupt from his hands but take on a larger, more beastly aspect than most of his kind. He crouches down to nearly all fours and takes a defensive stance until his next opportunity to strike.

Re: Battle vs. the strange dogs

Adryn can't put his finger on it, but there was definately something wrong with these dogs. They seemed perfectly natural, yet something unnatural stood out.

Whatever the case may be, Aethen and Genovia's concern brought him back to his senses. Instead of using his new bestial claws to tear into the strange dogs, he uses them to make a tactical withdraw up into the trees, knowing he wouldn't last very long on the ground.

Once he reaches the same elevation as his companions he says, "Sorry for that, something about those creatures just didn't sit right with me, but now is not the time to deal with them. We need to head back to town and see if Vertium can help interpret this vision of ours."

Unaware of the bleeding at his side he continues, "We should stick to the branches and vines until we are clear of these beasts. Genovia, you may want to hold on tight... this ought to be a fun ride.", as he begins to look for a way to swing out.

Aethen nods and looks to his injured friend.  "Hold a moment, brother.  You would not wish to help them track us by leaving a trail."  Aethen closes with Adryn and heals his wound.

"You said they seemed wrong to you, and you also sounded certain that they fed on magic.  How did you come to that conclusion?"  Aethen asks as they begin to move through the trees toward the distant city.

Re: Battle vs. the strange dogs

The dogs charge after Adryn as he heads for a tree but are not swift enough to catch him.  They yip at the base of the trees but do not climb up after.  The trip back to the city is relatively easy and uneventful in the tree tops.  The dogs give up the chase very quickly and do not come near the walls.  By the time the walls are in sight, it is safe enough to climb down and enter the city from the ground.

Your added wisdom gives you a bit of insight, Vertium would likely be the one targeted by those dogs and may not be the best one to deal with them, at least not close up.

Re: Battle vs. the strange dogs

Adryn places his hand where his wound once was, looks at Aethen and nods in appreciation. "Thank you, brother. With all that was happening, I hadn't even noticed they took a bite out of me".

The two of them soared through the tree branches and vines almost effortlessly as they put more and more distance between them and danger.

Once they were far enough away from the dog-like creatures, and with Genovia safely in tow, Adryn was able to let his guard down enough to answer Aethen's questions.

"I know those beasts seemed harmless enough at first glance. That is why I initially tried to reason with them, and let us pass. Unfortunately, once they got close enough... something just wasn't right about them. Something, unnatural that I can't quite identify", Adryn says as he reaches out for another vine.

"They had no interest in turning back, so I tried to charm one. I failed horribly", Adryn said bluntly. "It was at that point I found out they were after our magic... quite simply, because they told me. They wanted to steal our magic."

Adryn didn't say much else after that, until they reached the edge of the wilds,  and the city was within sight. Adryn lowers himself slowly to the ground, as to not lose his precious cargo, and places Genovia back on solid ground. "I hope you enjoyed 'flying' with us", he says with a smile.

Adryn starts walking toward the city gates, "We ought to find the others. I'm sure they'll be interested in what we have learned..."

As they enter the city, Aethen suddenly stops and places a hand on Adryn's shoulder.

"Adryn, I apologize for my reaction if I gave you offense.  I hope that you understand my reason for asking you to stay your hand.  While they were most likely drawn to that spot because of the magical communion with Addiyr, they posed little threat to us...."  Aethen pauses to ensure that he wasn't making things worse.  "What I mean to say is that we are the Tenders of the Path, and animals that are acting according to their nature should not incur our wrath."

Aethen's eyes drop to Adryn's wound.  "I just wanted you to know why I did not stay on the ground and fight.  A brother does not abandon one of his own, and I would never from you."  Saying this allows Aethen to breathe deeper and stand a bit straighter.

"Thank you, but there really is no need to apologize. Your concerns were not without merit.", Adryn replies.

"Honestly, my initial reaction to them was curiosity. I've never seen creatures like that, and I'm afraid that curiosity blinded me to their hostility. It wasn't until I was backed against that tree when my 'fight or flight' response kicked in.", Adryn added.

"You are correct about one thing... one should expect creatures in the wild to behave according to their nature, but I can't shake the feeling that they were not behaving naturally.". Adryn shakes his head, trying to wrap his head around the situation.

"Any idea where we should look for the others?"

Return to Qorlander

GM:  Please be patient, I have to catch the other group up to you time-wise and some things need to happen before I can do that.  With summer time, some of them have indicated that they are only posting intermittently because of vacation or access problems.  We will continue in this separate thread for now.

When you arrive back in town, you begin to visually search for your friends at first, rather than ask after them, near the docks.  Likely Grondor and a couple of the others went to get a drink at one of the nearby inns, but a quick search turns up nothing.  Do you wish to ask after them or broaden your search pattern?

Trying not to look completely lost, Adryn stops to collect his thoughts for a moment. "I think we are in the same boat, Aethen. (no pun intended) I am no adventurer, but if I were, I would probably look for room and board or information. If we can't find them after a couple more inns/taverns, I guess we need to start asking around."

Adryn begins to notice Genovia attracting alot of stares and sideways glances, and decides to stand a little closer to her for good measure.

"By the looks of things, a group of humans wouldn't go without notice."

The three of you continue through the area near the docks, searching inns and taverns without speaking up yet.  Genovia is subjected to glares, people (mostly Unbular) spitting on the ground at the sight of her, or mumbling imprecations under their breath.

"I am at a loss. I have never seen hatred for humanity expressed with such openness."  Certainly it existed where they were from, but there was also acceptance as well.  This place seemed to have no tolerance for their kind.

Aethen begins to wonder if they need to look into some kind of disguise, because of the prevalence of the displays.  He poses the idea to the others.

GM note:  You are all speaking Unbular or Kradok out of habit or courtesy, but all of you speak Brachus, the Anthros native language.

As the three of you consider possibilities for concealing Genovia and finding the others, a figure in expensive, yet simple robes appears before you. "You are here to speak with Torhavich.  Like the others."  It almost comes across as a statement rather than a question.  The voice is soft and hard to distinguish gender or kind, but it evokes feelings of trust. "Follow me.  I will take you to your friends."

Re: Return to Qorlander

Aethen and Genovia are instantly enamored of this stranger.  They bring feelings of comfort, trust, and safety and his every word is honest.  Adryn, while still feeling as if this stranger means no real harm, recognizes a natural aura about them that is possibly magical in nature.  The aura is automatic and not something the stranger is intentionally doing, which is mild cause for worry since certain magical beasts have a similar effect with their pheromones when hunting, but being aware of it will allow Adryn to act should the need arise.  For now, it would be unwise to try to pull the other two out of it, especially if this one can lead you to the others and out of the eyes of all of the hostility.

The stranger leads the three through twists and turns to the edge of town near the wall and the mountains rising sheer in the north of town.  There is a beautiful mansion that appears to have been carved from the wall of the mountain and looks like it is growing out from it.  Everything is beautiful stone in varying colors with ornate wooden doors.  At the stranger's approach, the doors open and the three are led inside where the rest of the group is eating dinner.  Before they see you, the stranger turns and say, "I need to change out of these traveling clothes.  Please, sit and eat, I will join you momentarily."

GM:  Please post in the main thread from here out.
