The had taken some damage but had maneuvered thanks to the skilled men and Tom and Aglaca's brilliant orders.  No time for second thoughts now as they came up and thudded hard against the Mermaid.

The Swan led the way as they swung over to deck of the Mermaid.....

As the two ships collided heavily, Aglaca yelled, "Ropes now! Tie it off and let's go!"  As he looked towards the point of impact, he saw the Swan vault over the rail followed by a host of men.  "Damn that woman," he grumbled as he made his way over the rails.

Tom gave a slight curse as Cerridwen leapt first, the woman was impetuous enough to give him the fits. "Ready the lines boys fire muskets to keep their heads down. Mind your aim and give over, helmsmen ready to break away!" He gripped his cutlass and followed the Swan with a cry.

Re: 'BLACK SWAN' ~ Main Deck
She was long up as she had not rested well last night.  Death, needless deaths, all draped over her shoulders and when she lay prone it was a black and red blanket of death.  God what was she doing?  Laying there she thought back at the happiest days of her life and they were spent with Tom as they scavenged for food and clothing, but then there were two new men in her life and had she gone to the arms of the wrong one?  Should she have gone that fated night to visit Aaron Zarnoff instead of Jonathan Beaupre'?  But that was it now, she had foolishly fallen in love with Jon.  So in love she foolishly told him all the truth and he called her such foul things when all she wanted was to come clean for a life with him.

Resting on the railings she contemplated meeting up with Smyth again.  Any way she had to she would return that sword to Jon as it was his father's.  Jon had handed it to here when she needed to protect herself on his ship..... wait.... she fought Smyth with that sword.  "The BASTARD!" She screeched and it echoed on the sea air.  "The bastard has known who I am all along!"  she growled "Damn, Damn, Damn!"

She buried her head in her hands and stepped back from the rail resting her elbows on it.  Now she had to meet and get this over with with that damn Hunter.  Well she would sort Cpt Smyth out after that.

Raising her head to the heavens "Mother I will not let you down, I will survive and our home will be ours again I stake my life on it!"

She heard footsteps approaching and knew it was one of her crewmen, she trusted them for all but Aglaca had sailed with Tom and her a many a night.

Aglaca heard the Swan yell up on the deck, loudly calling someone a bastard.  "Smythe!"  He growled.  His hand shot to his blade and reflexively drew as he leaped up the gangplank and searched quickly, only to find Swan at the rail.  He crossed the deck quickly and silently as he scanned for threats, reaching her, he spoke quietly, "Captain?  Is everything all right?"

Re: 'BLACK SWAN' ~ Main Deck
"Its a long story and I have been dangerously stupid.  Its okay Aglaca, I will have to deal with my demons.  Thank you for caring and stowing away on the Black Swan." she laughed with that and turned placing a gentle clap to his shoulder.  He had been stalwart standing by her not knowing her, Tom or what was truly going on.

"I did not sleep well last night, too many lives in my dreams.  I know that Smyth kills needlessly and I more than know he is a man to watch at all times. Seriously Aglaca I am unsure what move to take next my friend." she said as she leaned against the same railing with her back to it and her elbows now propped on it.  "So I am ready to go meet this Cpt Hunter, you've had word with him what do ye make of him?"

Cerri was sure now that Smyth knew what that sword meant to her as she had fought him with it herself until Jon stepped in.  It  was not known to her though that she had met Smyth after that on a few occasions.  She did not know he was Aaron Zarnoff whom she had almost had a supper with.  The man she found in her thoughts when Jon was not there.  She knew the playing game now and kept her cards close.

Re: 'BLACK SWAN' ~ Main Deck
He looked at her a moment, then leaned on the rail himself, "I know naught of the man, this Captain Hunter, but I can tell you what I have observed.  His first mate loves him as dearly as any man can love another.  They look to be fast friends and I expect have been for a very long time.  That Hunter can sit at a table with that dark haired lass, and have his mate even talk to him instead of her speaks volumes.  He watches over Carmen, not as one who lusts after her, but as one who protects her.  He warned me of breaking her heart.  I must ask her some day how she knows the man."

He paused a moment and stared at the horizon, "He wants to meet you, and wants to very dearly.  He also did not attempt to bull or force his way through me at the door that first night, but did try to appear the drunkard and did a rather poor job of it.  He quickly offered the information on the Hand in the shallows.  That first night, he moved like a fighter as did his mate.  Last evening when I told him of your desire to meet, he seemed very stiff, though I do not know why."

Aglaca stepped away from the railing and stood in front of the Swan, "My take on the man is that he is loyal and brave, as well as a good Captain.  He is quick of wit and not a man to be toyed with.  He is an honorable man, for honorable men look out for those who need it.  He does not look to be a man to trifle with.  I expect that he can more than take care of himself in a pinch.  There is a story in the man as to why he is a pirate.  What the story is, I do not know, but he does not seem like Smyth, nor even like our other Captains."

He looked at the Swan and placed a hand on her shoulder, "He is a dangerous man.  I would ask that I be allowed to act as your guard during this meeting.  I will remain silent, and guard the door, but I would be remiss in my promise of my sword arm to not accompany you."

"Its a gamble Aglaca, me meeting him alone in that room but that is how it must be.  If his loyal friend is out side the door then so shall you, Tom and Jacob. I need to know I have full back up." she answered him back.

Jacob strolled up to the captain dofting his cap and straightening his eye patch. Absent mindedly he reached into his pocket and grabbed a peanut and fed it to the small water rat in his hat.

"You wanted to see me captain?" he asked with a sly smile, giving a small wink with his patched up eye. Eyes going wide he looked around absently as if he had never stood in front of the captain before.

Re: 'BLACK SWAN' ~ Main Deck
"Good morn Jacob and how did you find your evening having to stay aboard ship to watch things.  Jacob you are new to this crew and let's get one thing straight please.  Our Quarter Master is Tom Cruickblade and our Sailing Master is now Aglaca and that makes you, our fine friend Jacob, our Boatswain.  Now it is time that the three of us leave so as I can meet with this Captain Hunter whom I have thought to do in private but I want to KNOW that you three have my back.  As usual Tom is late to the party..." she grumbled the last and she knew Tom's views on all of this.  "We cut our losses the last raid on the King and Beaupre's ship and with the three of us Captains we shall have to plan carefully.  I have something to disclose to you three that some of you may already know but I shall repeat myself for clarity.  Any questions .... and Zdenek!  Yes you go below and let the sleeping or whatever he is doing Tom Cruickblade we await him to grace us with a sober appearance....NOW!" she wasn't mad at the sailor but at Tom himself and she would have words with him before this day was over she knew!

She had saw the man through the cell bars of the galley below and went with her gut instinct about Aglaca.  She had signed on Jacob with the same gut instint and she trusted these men, perhaps more than she should have.  If any of them, yes, ANY of them crossed her they would pay harshly for it.  By nature Cerri was once a sweet innocent that trusted all, even her bastard of a father that murdered her mother, yes she even went along with the rushed wedding by Beaupre' and when telling the man the truth he gave her no chance to explain and she had become nothing but a whore and their to him.  Well two could play his game and she was damn sure she was going to ruin him financially and in that bargain she would have the money to pay for the mortgage from that miscreant bastard Lord Durnley.  She was fully a woman now and she had Jon to thank for that.

If she hated him so why did she still hurt thinking about him, about what they might have had, she had foolishly fallen in love with Tom's hated half brother and nothing good had come of it.  What she had wanted was love, a man that was true and no temper like her dead father's but instead she had married the same kind of bastard.  Cerri would not die the death her poor mother did.  She would fight tooth and nail to survive and bring Falconcrest back to the beautiful home of her childhood or die trying!  Yet she did not wish to see innocents harmed in this battle of her's, the real Cerri was so much like her mother, so tender and caring and trusting.  So that made her think 'Why had the King given her his own router'.  She had not asked and the King had not told Jon?  Where did the King come into all of this?

Re: 'BLACK SWAN' ~ Main Deck
Quarter Master
Most British and AngloAmerican pirates delegated unusual amounts of authority to an individual called the Quartermaster, who became almost the Captain's equal. The general rule was that during times of battle the Captain retained unlimited authority, but at all other times he and the rest of the crew were subject to the command of the Quartermaster.
The Quartermaster was usually elected by the crew immediately after choosing a Captain, and it was his duty to represent their interests.  For this he received an extra share of the booty when it was divided. Above all, he protected the Seaman against each other by maintaining order, settling quarrels, and distributing food and other essentials.
Serious crimes were tried by a jury of the crew, but the Quartermaster had the authority could punish minor offenses, and kept the records and account books for the ship. If the pirates were successful, he decided what plunder to take from a prize. If the pirates decided to keep a captured ship, the Quartermaster often took over as the Captain of that ship until they disposed of it.

Sailing Master
This officer was in charge of navigation and the sailing of the ship. He directed the course and looked after the maps and instruments necessary for navigation. Since the charts of the era were often inaccurate (or nonexistent) his job was a difficult one. Many Sailing Masters were forced into pirate service from captured vessels.

Boatswain
The Boatswain supervised the maintenance of the vessel and its supply stores. He was responsible for inspecting the ship and it's sails and rigging each morning, and reporting their state to the captain. The Boatswain was also in charge of all deck activities, including weighing and dropping anchor, and the handling of the sails.

Aglaca started slightly as Jacob stepped forward, but nodded to his shipmate.  He did turn to the Swan as she mentioned that he was now the Sailing Master.  Anyone looking at the group might have sworn that Aglaca paled slightly at her words, but other than a slight ashening of his countenance, he made no move to interrupt her words.

He waited until the Swan sent the crewman after Tom and then turned to her, "Ye will of course be armed.  He was told to leave his weapons in his room or with Carmen, so if there be any problems you will have the advantage.  I will check him for daggers and such before letting him in.  If you have need of us, yell loudly."

He shrugged and looked at Swan, "I be ready when you are."

"Boatswain, titles meh, but I've always checked the rig of any boat I'm on, after all one frayed rope can mean the difference between gold and the noose" Jacob grinned and shrugged before petting the rat, "You know who the captain of this vessel is?" he said indicating the rat in his hat feeding it another peanut. "Bob and I have your back cap" He said with a smile resting his hand on the pommel of his saber.

"Are we expecting a fight?" He asked looking around seemingly nervously, might just check myself out a couple of pistols, Not that the bloody things ever work properlyHe mumbled to himself

Re: 'BLACK SWAN' ~ Main Deck
Tom had not been found either asleep or drunk, instead he had been cleaning a set of pistols and ensuring they were ready. This meeting did not sit well and he intended her to be ready for whatever happened. As the crewman came down Tom nodded, ”Yes I know she is waiting for me...” Something didn't sit right with this and he had been feeling that way since she had told him of her intention. Further he had to consider what was best for the crew, while she was named captain the crew had say in what they did. Still he had supported her and would even if she was willing to jump into a school of sharks. He would be diving in beside her. Stepping to the deck he eyed the stranger for a moment then spoke towards the captain, ”Captain, we may need to get a few more barrels for freshwater, our last forray damaged a few, also we'll be in need of salted meat before we hit the open seas.”.

He stepped across the deck with a nod for Aglaca and offered the pistols to Cerri, ”Aglaca is right, you need to be armed...these are in good working order.” He still showed concern but he was going to stand by her, even if it led to the gallows. ”Lead the way Captain.” He saluted and waited for her to start to the meeting

Re: 'BLACK SWAN' ~ Main Deck
Cerri held up her hand to the offer of the guns although her conscience was in battle with itself.  Looking at Tom "I gave my word and I will keep it even if it means the death of me.  With you and Aglaca waiting just outside the door it would be suicide for this Hunter to try anything.  I am most assured that Cpt Smyth shall be there as well and his man Timmons.  Lets get this dog and pony show on the road.  Jacob I need you to come along with us.  Yet for some reason I trust this Hunter, for now." she drew a deep breath and spoke solemnly to the three men.  "There is questions about how I got the King's router, he gave it to me as I was fleeing the Beaupre' household.  I did not stop to think why, I had Beaupre's router for my task is to financially ruin my dear sweet .... husband." there they knew and she looked from face to face for reactions.

Of course she nor any of her crew knew that Hunter was indeed Beaupre' but Aglaca had suspicions on how Jon was aboard that ship when he was to have been in Cornwall or London.  Little did she know that Smyth knew who Hunter's true identity was and she had figured out the pirate knew her having fought her on Jon's ship when he attacked them on the way from London to Cornwall.  Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practise to deceive.....

Cerri or the Swan turned and headed to the ropes and climbed down to a dingy below to take them to shore.  As she sat she looked around to see if she could see Smyth anywhere around.  His ship was quietly rocking over the waves.

Cerri donned a clean white pirate's shirt, her black leggings that fit like a glove.  A red sash around her waist which held her pistol.  Finally a black hooded cloak and came up on deck.  She looked towards the Rum Runner and took a deep breath. "Okay you lot, best to stay aboard ship for there is a storm a brewin.  Tom you are in charge.  Betsy I am sorry we have not had more time to talk but I have a task to do before I get any rest.  Aglaca, I am sure you would like some time with Carmen.  Any questions before I go visit Captain Smyth and try to retrieve a very valuable sword?"

Aglaca stood on the deck, his clothing somewhat cleaned and his long hair pulled back.  "Ma'am, please allow me to accompany you to Smythe's ship, if not me, then Tom, but I would prefer to go."  He looked down towards the deck with obviously more to say, but he held his tongue.  "I told Carmen that I would be late tonight, and since I haven't heard plans to sail in the morning, I may serve her breakfast if she wishes, but right now, I would go with you."

Re: 'BLACK SWAN' ~ Main Deck
"I need to show trust in our 'good' Cpt Smyth but perhaps you have a point there Aglaca.  You and Tom will accompany me but stay as clear as you can from the ship without being seen.  I will not be unarmed as I will have my pistol in one boot and my dagger in the other.  I have a need to gain that jewelled sword from the man.  If things look like they are turning sour then I will simply leave and if further help be needed I shall whistle 3 times and best you come fast if that happens my friends."

She knew that this new crew member was loyal to her and he had proved that to her and Tom already.  Tom was unusually silent as he and Betsy stood side by side.  Cerri was glad her 'brother' and closest friend had someone in his life.  Once, for a brief few days, she thought she too had found true love. Life was such a strange thing with all of its twists and turns and she had found herself wed in a whirlwind to Tom's most bitter enemy even if Jon did not know who Tom truly was, his half brother that he hated so.

It seemed that Aglaca too had found love on this god forsaken island.  Carmen was a strong willed woman and had the respect of all who lived or came to Tortuga.  Good or Bad and that was saying a lot for her.  Would Aglaca stay behind on Tortuga when they left for they would soon need to leave as she had to beat Jon back to Cornwall and she prayed that Reginald would understand and think that she had gone to London to visit her Aunt there.  Yes, Jon had told her that she would not leave the estate but she had bared her soul to the man she loved and got shot down for it and branded to be like all other women that use a man for their own gain.  Those thoughts brought the sting of tears to her eyes even now when she knew she had to be strong.  Not just for her but for her family and friends.  Yet Cpt Dreadwalker had DARED to steal that of all swords from the Beaupre' house and she knew how much it meant to Jon.  Oh what a tangled web we weave.

Then there was Cpt Hunter who now was a part of her Brotherhood and yet Hunter and Smyth had a deadly hate for each other.  Cutthroat was not even half the word for it.  She stood on her deck with her hands on the railing and looked out to sea and at the full of the moon still.  Then around to all the ships in the wharf.  Drawing a deep breath she pushed off from the railing and wrapped her black cloak around her slipping the cowl up to cover her head.  She had bathed in rose water and dressed in clean black satin britches which disappeared into over the knee high shiny black leather boots.  A red sash around her waist snuggly over a crisp white satin pirates shirt with lace at the cuffs and laced up the front to just below her neck.  Clean mask on and red scarf over her skull cap with the long black ponytail flowing down her back and tied with but a simple leather string.

"Well men, what say you for that was not an order but a suggestion if the two of you wish to accompany me.  But I will be fine for Smyth knows I am not a woman to be trifled with."  I am there for business and a meal.  Plain and simple." she smiled under her cloth embroidered mask and waited for her answer.  "Betsy if they go you two must stay safe aboard the Swan.  Once I get that sword we sail on the next high tide back to Cornwall."

Betsy held Tom's hand as they watched Cerri prepare to do a dangerous, if not fool hardy, thing.  Betsy too wondered why her love was so quiet.  It was normal for him to be railing at Cerri but Betsy knew it was because he loved that woman too.  She felt no jealousy and only wished the best for poor Cerri.  Having been at that Ball at the Beaupre' residence the night the shit hit the sails!  Betsy had known Jon in intimate ways before her and Tom fell in love but it was more when the man needed someone, a woman, to hold him.  No strings to bind him.  Or her for that.  This was a secret she would keep to herself as Tom had that same temper as Jon did and she had a love in her heart so deep for Tom she would not hurt him anyway possible.

"You risk much for that foolish sword.  You have every right to one or two body guards as the leader of this group.  I do wish you would reconsider taking us aboard as guards.  If the storms break loose, t'will be a long way, fighting our way through the crew to reach you."  Aglaca clearly wasn't happy with her choice.  "Be very careful M'Lady, that man has much more than a silver sword on his mind."

Aglaca paused as a sudden thought furrowed his brow, "Once we retrieve the sword we are going back to England?"  His heart tore in two as he maintained a calm face.

Hesitant she listened to what Aglaca proposed.  Yes, of course, she had every reason to bring at least two guards along.  "In thinking it over I just do not want to 'spook' Smyth into not negotiating with selling me that sword.  The sword means too much to me and ... to the person it has been stolen from.  Okay then, you and Tom come as my guards.  But do not interfere unless I give you cause.  I will do what is needed to be done to secure that sword then yes, we will return to Cornwall.  Prepare the ship for sailing on the morning tide.  The three of us will be back well before then." or so she thought...

Carmen had taken quick action and followed her heart.  The man she wanted to spend the rest of her life was about to leave her maybe for good.  She put the Tavern in the hands of a trusted friend and she packed a few items of clothing into a bag and then smuggled herself aboard the Swan.  Without Aglaca or Tom to stop her the others were busy on board and she made it to the deck below.
