'Storm Raven' ~ Main Deck

El Cuervo De Tempestad (Stormraven in the English tongue) is Don Nicolas Agustin Salazar's ship. An unassuming vessel, its ordinary look belies a ship built for trade as well as war.

After a short walk to the docks, Nicolas stops and points to his ship for Lord Ellis to see.

"There she is, Senor Ellis - El Cuervo De Tempestad...The Stormraven in your language. It is my ship and now home for me and my crew no that I have left my former life in Spain far behind."

Ellis whistled appreciatively. "Yes this vessel will definitely be of assistance to the scarecrow and his smuggling operations." Ellis told himself silently. He smiled and said, "Captain Salazar that is a mighty fine ship indeed. She looks both sturdy and fast. May we go aboard so I can have an even closer look?"

"Of course", Nicolas said with a grin and led the way toward his ship.

Men about the dock and those aboard ship said, "Capitan" in respect as Nicolas made his way up the gangplank with Ellis following behind. Once on board, he turned to Ellis.

"El Cuervo is made with Oak timbers brought from the Americas at great expense. Below decks offer room for my me & crew but additional crew space is built for passengers. Her hold can accomadate almost twice what a typical vessel of her design can carry without change in speed or maneuverability. Finally, she is armed with 24 cannons - port and starboard with 2 forward and aft but if I should so desire, she could carry twice that number but cargo and passenger space would have to be sacrificed." he finished with a smile.

Before Ellis could answer, Nicolas turned and yelled "Alejandro!"

One of the crewmen who was working on the mainmast rigging came sprinting up to him and said, "Si Capitan?"

"Busque el muchacho ingles que rescatamos del mar la semana pasada y traelo aqui", Nicolas said to Alejandro.

"A la orden, mi Capitan", Alejandro said and ran off.

Turning back to Ellis, he said. "El Cuervo's design was my brainchild - a ship built because as a merchantman, I was losing too many ships to the French and Portuguese warships at sea. Sadly, what ships in my merchant fleet I did not lose to them, I lost to my own government in high taxes...I had to sell everything to build her - she was to be one of a fleet of new merchant ship to my merchant business - now, El Cuervo De Tempestad is one of a kind and it is my hope that one day, I can return to my former status in shipping and resume my place in the Spanish Court."

Nicolas turned to regard Alejandro returning with a man who stood out among the mostly Spanish crew.

"Gracias Alejandro", he said to his crewman who bowed his head and returned to his duties.

"Allow me to introduce one of your counrtymen who I rescued out at sea several days ago while making my journey here. He has been treated fairly and has worked well alongside my own men while on board."

Ellis let out a whistle and then said, "Captain Salazar, what a vessel you have here. It is well armed and I am sure that oak it it made from provides a good defense as well. The versatility you have described with the potential for different configurations is quite intriguing. I think I am definitely going to enjoy doing business with you."

Then Ellis became aware of the new man coming over. He said to the man, "Lord Ellis Aitichson at your service. And who might you be?"

The grizzled, sunburned young man blinked in surprise and gave a weak bow.  "Giles Thourne, m'lord.  'M from the Romney Marsh area."  His voice, while still slightly weak, gave little sign of his couple days adrift at sea.  "Press ganged out 'f town a couple months back before the ship went down.  Cap'n Salazar was kind 'nough to pick me up after a'couple days 'nd give me a ride home."

"That press gang business is something I hate! Gives our country and navy a black eye." Ellis said to the man. Then he continued, "You say you are from Romney Marsh area? Have you heard anything about that person the King is after, the Scarecrow?" As he thought for a moment, Ellis said, "Did I hear you correctly, you are going back home to Romney Marsh, even after being press ganged there?"

"Well, it's m'home, m'lord," Giles explained, "I've a job an' a house.  It'd be to hard t'start agin elsewhere."  He had smiled at mention of the Scarecrow and then broke into a laugh. "I 'eard of 'im?  Ha, who hasn't down there?  Seems like the 'hole bloody 'rmy is runnin' up'n'down the swamp lookin' fer'm.  Gives us some excitement sometimes by ambushin' a caravan or roughin' up some navy thugs."

In reply to Giles Thourne (msg # 9):

Ellis said, "It sounds as if you like the man. I had heard the Scarecrow was a common bandit who robbed anyone he could. I had also heard that the people of Romney Marsh lived in fear of when the Scarecrow would strike next." He looked at Giles for a moment and then turned to the Captain.

Ellis said to Captain Salazar, "This Scarecrow that we are talking about is a brigand who is being hunted by the King's men. He smuggles in goods into our country, robs travelers, and even has been know to steal goods from the King's merchants." He shrugged and said to the Captain, "I hope that some one like the Scarecrow won't keep you from working in our area."

"Not at all", Nicolas said. "What the French, Portuguese and Dutch did not take at sea by force, my own government took in taxes. I have nothing left save what I have set aside for me and my crew and even that wont last more than a few months without a home port and lucrative trade...So I have the ship and you have the business opportunities - should this 'Scarecrow' become a nuisance, I and my men will deal with him - we are no strangers to battle, Senor Aitichson", he said with a grim grin.

Giles shrugged at the request for clarification.  "'E does sum good.  Makes trouble fer the tax-collectors 'n press gangers.  Sure, it brings t'army down 'round us, but it makes our lives easier."

Ellis nodded to Giles and said, "Good luck to you sir. I hope to see you soon and have another chat. Perhaps when you are off the ship and I could buy you a drink to go along to our talk." The he turned to Captain Salazar and said, "I shall be making some arrangement and have a job for you to do shortly. Should I contact you on the Storm Raven or do you have a place you will be staying that is on land?"

"My ship is my home Senor Aitichson", Nicolas said. "However being at sea for many days, I could use some time on dry land...Perhaps that inn I had breakfast could be a suitable stay for a former Spanish noble - unless you have another establishment you would recommend?", he asked.

Ellis laughed, patted Captain Salazar on the shoulder, and said, "I would highly recommend the Deadman's Inn. However, I know you Spaniards are irresistible to English woman. So I would ask you to keep your charms away from Penny. She has caught my eye and has the key to my heart." Ellis made his way off the ship, hoping to talk to Penny and then see what else was going on.

"I never mix business with pleasure, Senor Aitichson - it ruins both in my experience...Adios!"

Nicolas went to his cabin and gathered a few things for his stay at the Deadman's Inn. He grabbed his hand chest with what little remained of his funds for ship and crew and also some personal effects. He also grabbed some spare clothes and put them in a canvas sack. Coming up on deck, he spoke with Alejandro and told him to watch the ship and to make sure she was manned and ready while he made his stay in Cornwall. Once he made his orders clear to Alejandro and he understood, he turned to Giles Thourne.

"Well Senor Thorne, as I promised you have been brought home and treated well - hopefully a capable sailor thanks to being around me and my men on our way here", Nicolas said with a grin.

"I'm going to the Deadman's Inn" he said and handed Giles a small handful of silver Doubloons - 10 to be exact.

"Despite the circumstances of you joining my crew, you have still earned your keep on El Cuervo De Tempestad and I have a habit of paying those for services rendered - hence the Reales I have given you - feel free in joining me at the inn for a drink...Or do as you wish now that you are home."

"Indeed I shall", Nicolas said with a grin and patted Giles on the back.

"Now, on to the Deadman's inn - I normally don't drink this early in the day but this is a special occasion - toasts must be made to new friends and new opportunities in a new land -Vamonos!"
