Eberron

(OOC NOTE: This is Eberron. Entirely not set in any of the other worlds in Mittens Dungeon. If a character appears in this story, they have nothing to do with the other stories. So if Mittens were here, for instance, she is not the same Mittens as the one in Unity. That said, if anyone desires to have their character make a cameo as an NPC, feel free to do so. I know I will. ;) Other than that, if you don't understand something, please refer to either the Eberron Campaign Guide or Eberron Player's Guide. If you still don't understand, chances are it's on purpose... or my grammar decided to suck again. ^_^ Have fun!)

The sunrise is especially beautiful today. The sparkling gold band in the sky seems to decorate the multi-colored clouds. Sunbeams peak through lower clouds to shine upward at the clouds above them. This same sky is contrasted by the magical vehicles and such flying through it and the incredible towers reaching up into it. The towers are so tall, the upper area of the city almost touch the clouds with their highest tips. Each tower is a town or two in it's own right, but there are a couple hundred of these towers.

To Alexis, this city seems so very very alien. She smiles as she takes in the sunset, her most recent purchase resting on her chest from around her neck. The shiny necklace seems to portray the dagger river and "the Hilt". The river part is blue stained glass encased inside a copper outline. A kindly human woman had persuaded Alexis that it would look nice on her and the saleswoman needed the money. Alexis thought to herself how she would enjoy the necklace for a time and eventually give it to someone she cared about since possessions aren't that important to her.

Alexis looked down from where she stood, holding on to a railing as the wind blew through her hair. She was up so high and standing to have the perfect view of the dagger river, it's hilt, and the buildings way down below that hugged the river. Her smile became a sad smile as she briefly imagined this being the last beautiful day on Eberron. Not wanting to think such things, she banishes the thought from her mind and enjoys the scenery for a few extra minutes. She had already been standing there for half an hour watching the sun rise. And she knew she could always come back to this spot if she wanted. The sight was so spectacular, she really hesitated to go back to exploring the city, but eventually curiousity of other sights and possible needs drew her back towards the inside of the city.

(OOC: Sharr, aka the City of Towers is the location in case the skyscrapers weren't a hint. Sharr is located along the dagger river which is located in the nation of Breland. The regional benefit listed for that is: Choose Diplomacy or Insight as your associated skill. This means you can either take a +2 bonus to those skills or add one of them to your class skill list.)

Re: Eberron

Up from the depths, six feet high, not Godzilla not Godzilla not Godzilla.  Sorry, cartoon song reference moment.  Eletor however was indeed recently up from The Depths (and six feet tall).  Old habits and new habits had come together to charge people for medical services, but at affordable (sometimes 'oh I forgot to ask them for money' affordable) rates.  Besides, everyone knew that despite potentially costing more to provide, you charge less for mundane medical services than the Divine and Arcane sort.

Regardless, some time at the opposite end of the high situation was well suited for a moment of self reflection.  And wondering if Dol Dorn approved of stitching up the arm of a possibly too stupid to live homeless person trying to mug the healer with an obvious broadsword.

OOC: Ah yes, I really should fill out Eletor's BG bit sometime.  But some heads upness are that he is the 'Marked recently but still unknown to house' Variety of Sentinel Mark (Human mercenaries are us House Canith).  A good chunk of his life until semi recently he was a Combat Medic for House Jorasco, Halfling marked rent a medic and hospitals house.

PS.  It's Sharn  <.<

Also in the not-so-high situation strolled a stout and well armored dwarf who was frequently referencing a map.

"Tangled beards!" he grumbles, "You mean to tell me they landed me in the wrong station!?  Confounded impossible city..."

He spots a nearby person rendering aid to another, and infers they're more helpful than not.

"Excuse me sir, but could you direct me to the nearest Kundarak office?"

Re: Eberron

Eletor looked over to the Dwarf requesting aid, large amounts of time spent working with Halflings enabling them to avoid awkwardly looking too high initially.  "Of course.  This is the lower western edge of the Menthis Plateau.  The Kundark offices are in the Upper Centre Plateau just north and up from here."  Yes, the Dwarven House establishments are in one of the highest points of Sharn.  Go figure.

"Did you figure you could manage on your own, or would you prefer to be shown the way?"

Re: Eberron

The Kundarak office is just up ahead. And as fate would have it, Alexis happens to be stopping by there if just to see how they are represented so far from home. It's natural to adopt the culture you live in, but Alexis can't help wonder if the representatives here were BORN in Sharn... or sent from the Mror Holds.

Alexis finds a seat, watches and listens. All kinds go through here and all kinds of conversations could happen. What she doesn't know is that her future companions will be holding conversations before her very eyes in short order.

Re: Eberron

Lots of people had broadswords, it was a quality of weapon you'd find a match for with Hammers, Axes, and a selection of polearms (Not to mention was the biggest sword a Halfling could manage without going into specialty gear, but that's a different matter).  However Eletor's was admittedly kept in a Scabbard with a ruby inset in it's locket (or whatever term you use for the bit surrounding the open edge).  That and, you know.  Warsmith.  Dwarven Warsmith.  The enforcement of stereotype meant Beldal could easily tell from the handle that Eletor's sword was better than twenty gold's worth.

"Eletor, humble servant of Dol Dorn offering my assistance.  Directions given have an unfortunate tendency to mostly consist of 'by that tower', and I'm sure you can see how that could lead to inevitable confusion in this city."  It was a fortunately short trip, so far as countless (well, not really but raise your hand if you know) stories straight up and a block to the right are short.  "So far as I know, they haven't lost the bit of money I've left with them yet."

Shortchanging someone who works for the guys patching up your gaping torso wounds was not good long term business.  However Eletor was still working for House Jorasco when he had made that deposit, not so much the case now.

OOC: I love how some in descriptions, A longsword, Broadsword, and Bastard sword are all pretty much the same thing.  Broadsword? See Longsword.  Longsword? See Bastard Sword. Bastard Sword? See Longsword.  Thank you for such clarity here Mr. Wikipedia.  But I suppose this is the case with most swords in general.  And yes, difficult to come across as 'merely a humble servant of Dol Dorn' sometimes when Magical gear consists of Precious gem blinged Scabbards, Golden bladed swords, and badges made of charred flesh and bone in the visage of a screaming face.

Re: Eberron

Yes, ruby scabbards do tend to speak of more wealth than your typical NPC.  Especially on the lower levels of the city.  But the funny thing about Magical ItemsTM is that a +2 looks exactly like a +1.  The one doesn't glow any brighter than the other or bear a convenient numerical mark on it.  Probably.  Fortunately that snag can be overcome by simply holding the item for 5 minutes of not much exertion.  If Beldal had a head for cash value, which, amazingly, beyond being able to spot superior craftsmanship* he does not, it would be the waxy shoes that are the most obviously valuable item the helpful human is wearing.  Level 10 and all that.

Be that as it may, paladins don't usually walk about armed with a broadsword in cloth armor.  Heck, neither do clerics.  Must be an aveng...heeey.  Aren't they WIS type beheaders as opposed to the brawny variety?  Isn't Dol Dorn all about arm wrestling when compared to nature appreciation or noticing traps?  Dol Dorn must have been in a particularly ironic mood when they commissioned a wise-guy to punish deserters who pride themselves in their physical prowess...  Actually, come to think of it, a WIS type avenger would be PERFECT for that job!

"An honor," Beldal answers remarkably quickly considering all the OOC banter, "Good to hear they live up to their reputation in your experience.  I had in mind to repay your help with coin, but now that I've got a better look at you, I'm guessing you're pretty well off.  So perhaps I could repay your favor for with a future favor should you ever have need of a skilled craftsman who could make a bit of magical gear worth 50 platinum or less, given the proper components of course, or resize one of any value to fit you better.  I'm also kind of handy with the hammer in combat, but I suspect you'd have less use for that."

*((More OOC: Githweave is the first of the masterwork options in cloth armor.  So a +3 does in fact look visibly different from a +2.  I suppose even though Beldal's background is in hammering metal, the difference would be noticeable enough to someone who appreciates fine craftsmanship, but since the player couldn't tell if Eletor was wearing +3, I'll assume the character can't either, not that Beldal mentioned anything about it specifically.

Even yet more banter:  I suppose one could disguise most magical items readily enough with long strips of cloth or duct tape if one were inclined to hide all those rubies and screaming faces.  Or even wear a mundane robe over everything.  Of course a duct tape covered cloak of distortion would still make you look blurry, so that wouldn't work so well in that case.  Never mind jem-shaped hunk of duct tape floating around my head.  Or the fact that my duct tape shoes don't touch the ground....))

Eletor turned to face the more recently arrived Dwarf,  "Merely directing someone to this fine establishment.  I'm sure Beldal can sate his business better than I can."  Obviously the case when Beldal hasn't told Eletor what business that is, but still a valid comment.

"Consider my services a tithe to the church of Dol Dorn," Beldal answers Eletor with a polite nod, "Should you enlist them."

He then answers the marked Dwarf, "I was looking for a particular business, and was apparently sent to the wrong place.  I figured this would be a good place to find better directions to businesses.  Besides, my dealings with them would probably inevitably wind up involving the Kundarak, so I figured I may as well get myself assigned an agent or representative or whatever-you-call-'em while I was asking for directions."

He gives a sidewards glance to the strange looking Elf? woman seated nearby.  Sure is different from most elves in many ways.  But he only allows himself a very brief glance.

The dwarf rep nods to Beldal. "Alright then. Ask away! If I can't help you out, I can find someone who can." his eyes follow Beldal's glance. He asides to Beldal, "A traveler, I recon... probably from a far away land."

He decides not to concern himself with Alexis, though and says, "Well out with it! What's the place that's so hard to find?"

Alexis listens intently, hoping she might be helpful. She doubts it since this place is so very alien and complicated, but there's always that chance. However, if it's a place she would like to visit, she may as well join Beldal also.

As Beldal seems to have the more informed assistance they need, Eletor focused their attention on the Elven girl as well.  Although while they too had comments to make, they were less aside and more direct as they walked over to Alexis.

"Excuse me, did you require assistance with anything?  Or are you merely waiting for something already dealt with?  I would hate to think my actions have caused you a longer wait."  Not like there was a line or anything, but still.

Re: Eberron

Alexis turns her attention to Eletor and looks up at him from the seat she is sitting in. "Hm? Oh, no, there's no bother at all... I came here to check on a few things and listen in on what's going on." she gives Eletor a smile. "Thank you for checking. Although, depending on where you or your companion wish to go, I may follow. I'm not from this city, so it would be easier to stick with a group than to try to find my own way."

Beldal would be happy to know one can't simply recognize a clan by looks alone since Alexis knows Anvilbreakers well. Enough that the legend is coming to her mind when she watches Beldal. But for now, she says nothing and looks back at Eletor. "If there is something I can do for you, however, do let me know. In the meantime, maybe you wouldn't mind sharing your faith with me? Such as how you came to favor Dol Dorn over the others and why you are on the path you are on."

It crosses her mind to quietly offer a tithe to Dol Dorn if she should happen across a temple or altar for said deity. Not that she worships any of the gods, but she does see the not-evil ones as heroes worthy of respect and some homage.

((OOC: Asked Chris what the DC checks were for the two aspects of Beldal's history and he told me to go by the DC chart listed in the DMG update. For levels 10 to 12, easy is 10, moderate is 16 and hard is 21. Chris then said to go ahead and make the Anvilbreaker legend hard while the attack from his character's background would be moderate.))
((DC 21: Rolled 20 Success! Critical! Alexis heard the best possible account of the Anvilbreaker legend during her time spent in the Mror Holds and remembers it with crystal clarity.))
((DC 16: Rolled 12 Success! From half level alone, I would get a total of 17. Alexis was at the Dwarven settlement where Beldal had been stationed. While she was there, she heard that there was an attack on it years ago that took many lives, warrior and civilian alike.))

Re: Eberron

Eletor nodded, "The ancient buddy system has it's many uses indeed.  And Thank you, the opportunity to spread the faith of Dol Dorn where it is desired is more than enough.  Dol Dorn like their Sister Deity Dol Arrah, is a God of War.  Their demand for courage and duty is widely known, as is their link with the soldiers and warrior themselves beyond the broader concept of Military Strategy utilizing them his sister embodies.  However, less acknowledge their demand of self sacrifice in the pursuit of what is right, thinking only of Dol Arrah who also requires this of their servants.  As well as the humble desire one cares for their body and ensure it is healthy and strong."  Dol Arrah would probably get stuck with the Unaligned label as well, and slightly more impersonal at that if not for the fact they had 'Oh, right. Evil is bad' tacked on to their tenets.

Eletor stopped to consider for a moment, then shrugged.  "As for myself, a man once told me that 'Dol Dorn doesn't do subtle'.  Circumstances at the time lead me to believe this to be true, and to follow their path as best I can."

A freshly decapitated body at your feet from the first time you have held a sword in your life, the dead's Dol Dorn pendant hanging from your blade unblemished did lack a certain degree of subtle, yes.

He then relays the circumstances of his getting lost in the City.

"My business is pretty straight-forward, really.  If you can get me directions to the T.S.T.C I'll be on my way and return when I actually have some terms I can hammer out with the Kundarak.  I suppose your business card might come in handy in my negotiations to let them know I've already got you guys waiting in the wings to be the 3rd party."

Eletor comments "Well, the fact they were attacking a Medical Clinic and attempting to kill me when I was armed with incredibly dangerous bandages somehow hinted that just possibly, they were confusing Dol Dorn with The Mockery."  They take Alexis's apparent confusion in stride, either through understanding or just not noticing or assuming lots of people are idiots when it came to how awesome Dol Dorn was.  Hint, it was one of the first two.

"Many seem to make this mistake, but more often it is assumptions of the outlook of Dol Dorn disciples.  War is War, and yet there are deities of light, dark, and Dol Dorn's more balanced view all claiming dominion over War.  Is the Devourer any less an aspect of Nature than Balinor or Arawai?  All the more important to be mindful of their differences as well as their similarities.  But few worshipers of Arwari wish to thank The Devourer for their storms in drought, or devouts of The Devourer to thank Balinor when there is an influx of hunting opportunity."

Beldal grunts and nods a "yes" in answer to Eletor's question, finger-thwapping the directions in his hand as evidence of success.  He strokes his beard as if the words he wants to say need to first be coaxed out of the mass of hair on his face.

"You both look like you're no strangers to adventure," he begins, "And I get the impression that you wouldn't approve of a band of cut-throats ambushing someone unprovoked.  Well that's what I'm expecting to happen to me today.  Call it a hunch.  So unless you had something planned, you're invited to join me in sending said cut-throats to the afterlife."

That's the Dwarven equivalent of asking a girl for protection.  Beldal fully expects to be laughed at by the Kundarak rep.  But he's long since lost his pride, and understands by experience that with the help of the Dol Dorn avenger and the strange looking girl the chances of his mission ending in success would more than triple.  He manages to keep from blushing.

Re: Eberron

Alexis is twice over impressed. First, by the dwarf asking for help. Asking help from a fellow dwarf is impressive enough, but from a human and (especially) an elf too? But on top of this is the way he worded it so that it looks more like a dwarf being kind enough to let Alexis and Eletor join in fun that Beldal could have hogged for himself.

"Thank you for the invite." Alexis answers, knowing it would simply be best to go along with the way Beldal worded things. "Most people would hog all the excitement for themselves. It is flattering to be offered the chance to travel alongside such a clearly capable fighter, not to mention being called capable by that same man."

What she didn't expect was that she would barely finish that sentence before a band of criminals decided to charge in, weapons drawn. "Alright, everyone! On the ground and nobody gets hurt!"

(Initiative rolls, everyone. That means you too, Seth.)

((OOC: Currently, we can see 5 pirates. All of them are human.))

Alexis: 07 + (Initiative mod 7) + (Beldal's power: 3) = 17
Beldal: 10 + (Initiative mod 8) = 18
Eletor: 11 + (Initiative mod 9) + (Beldal's power: 3) = 23
NPCs  : 17 + (Initiative mod 3) = 20
Durtendin: 4 + 6 = 10

So here's the order (until Seth rolls):
Eletor, ENEMY, Beldal, Alexis, Durtendin.

Please no posing until Seth rolls his initiative.

Re: Eberron

When the Bandits charge into the building, they disturb a swarm of insects that had been resting on a nearby tree trunk. That is till a withdrawn but slightly agitated voice emanates from the swarm, “And here we thought this would be a calm and relaxing day. Such pleasant weather. And we were in such a good mood too.”

Durtendin grumbles in his beast form of a swarm of insects as the Wilden Druid had been resting comfortably while those he had guided to the city were inside conducting House Tharashk business with the Banking Guild. And now that someone had threatened them, Durtendin's 'break time' had come to an unexpected early end. Durtendin thinks to himself, 'Okay first order of business is to make sure these bandits don't interfer with House Tharashk business, without catching innocent civilians in my attacks. I really do dislike these crowded towns makes it so much more difficult to fight at my full potential.'

Re: Eberron

Eletor was about to accept Beldal's invitation, but circumstances already invited him to potential violent carnage.  He eyes the bandits with obvious disappointment.  "There is much opportunity to be had for your obvious talents without upsetting the local law.  But instead you come here, Dol Dorn would be disappointed with you."

Unfortunately for Eletor, as is often the case those that want to do Lame things instead of Awesome things are less than impressed.

OOC Style: I rolled a 2.  So long Encounter power (Shared Madness).  As the joys of Ruby Scabbard make drawing weapon a free action when attacking (with +1 to next damage roll), I'll put that to use if any of the bandits cause me to pull of an AoO<.  And I can shift before/after making an AoO thanks to Sentinel Mark.

The voice of many locusts...  Sounds Biblical!  Beldal stands jaw agape for a moment as he tries to figure out what on Eberron he just heard.  It's at least clear that it didn't come from the bandits.  He snaps out of it, excusing it as a magical alarm ward placed on the Kundarak office.

((OOC: Simply because it's too cool not to use, I'm whipping out my weapon's daily.))

"Looks like our weapons will have to do the talking, Eletor," Beldal says.

He breaks out his huge hammer in one hand, and a bundle of metal shards in another.  He tosses the bundle into the air then swings the hammer at it, making it explode in the direction of the enemy with a resounding clash.  Shards of high-speed metal spray into the enemy lines, inflicting painful wounds on the two nearest bandits.

"How 'bout it then?  Let's talk their language!"

Re: Eberron

Eletor's head is knocked back by the blow, but remains steady on their feet as he looks back at the punching pirate, wiping a trickle of blood from his lip.  "They do indeed seem to be in need of Dol Dorn's advanced lesson course.  I trust you shall be of assistance good sir, possibly sirs."  This last comment directed towards the swarm, as Eletor grasps the handle of his blade,

"Pay attention you poor soul, you may only get to learn it once." This said, they draw their golden broadsword and cleave downwards at the more immediately offending pirate in a single natural motion.

OOC Style: Minor/ENC: Oath vs PAUNCH Pirate.. Free: Ruby Draw
Standard: Bond of Retribution, +15 Vs AC (15+11=26, so if I miss then this guy has better AC than any of us), 1d10+11 DMG (figure it's easier to remember to add a +1 when I two hand it, than remember to -1 it when I one hand it compared to my sheet), another +1 from Ruby Scabbard bonus if it hits.

First time I'm hit/missed by anyone not Target before end of my next turn,  Target takes 3 Radiant DMG

I rolled ANOTHER 2 (it also demanded my Google mail password between 'roll it' and 'get results' despite my logging in to Google literally 40 seconds before rolling),  Second roll was 11
http://rollr.appspot.com/view/...IIRGljZVJvbGwY5awIDA

Eletor currently has 68/82 HP, 9 surges

Also, on the offchance this guy is a minion.  Brutalized into straight death is your negative bloodied value.  Minions have 1 hp... So, will we get to see Minion enemies being cleaved in half or exploding as we strike them down?  Or is that just wishful thinking?

Eletor is silent for a moment.  Whether it is a moment of silence for the recently slain, or sensing somewhere in some reality is a very PAUNCH enthusiasm for one's badass Deity is anyone's guess.

"Alas, I can not make selfless claims of Heroism in this situation.  I do keep some of my money here, after all."  This said as they sheath their blade, apparently as unconcerned with the display of swarming bugs as they were with shrapnel sprays and growing violent plant life indoors.

All Eletor did was stab a guy.  Is it irony that the servant of Dol Dorn gave the most swift and merciful takedown, or is that misuse of the term that could give grammar fanatics fits?

The locusts disperse form whence they came as Alexis begins to speak as the 'swarm' replies to Bendel's comment by saying, “We are Durtendin, a Wilden.” as the swarm merges into a tall and lean being with camouflaged green and brown bark-like skin that trails into viny tendrils where his hair would be with a 'cloak' of vibrant green leaves growing from his back draped like a cloak. The being's eyes are bright emerald and contrast with the hide armor he wears with matching gloves incorporating the claws of what appears to be a panther with plated armbands. In each of Durtendin's hands is what appears to be a walking stick, although the Wilden quickly fastens them to his backpack that is mostly concealed by the leafy 'cloak' on his back.

Durtendin looks around and adds, “There is nothing heroic in what has been done. It is the way of nature, if someone tries to take what you protect, you must stop them. Whether it is ones money, one's family, or just the property of one's house.”

Eletor tends not to stop to patch up well armed people who make a deliberate choice to attack him and others less than deserving of being attacked.  But old habits can stick around when others take up the task.

"True words spoken Durtendin, it is good to meet one such as you."  this said as they kneel down by Alexis to offer aid of the first variety.

OOC Style: Right, +19 Healing score. I don't even NEED to roll when I can pass a DC 20 on a 1 (what with no crit fails on skill checks... Unless you're the sadistic sort who demands you go blind temporarily when you roll a 1 on a perc check.)  Passive 25 for Insight and Perc are also fun.

*eyes latest Beldal post regarding making a roll on a PC race*...so, does this mean Humans can go 'stop knowing every Godsdamned thing about us automatically without a skill roll everyone else'?  or is it still just every race except Humans who gets to be all unknown despite being a major race ;P?

Alexis does that lightly girly cringe when Eletor helps her with bandaging. "...thank you." she says, cracking a very small smile before continuing.

Alexis knows all about the races present, but while that is bound to have a clear and profound impact on a person's upbringing, Alexis also knows individuals are indeed not stereotypes. At least, if you scratch the surface.

She then turns to Eletor and reaches to pet his cheek where he had been punched, putting a salve of sorts on it as she isn't JUST interested in healing murderfaced bad guys, but also allies.

She doesn't say much else, not wishing to interrupt anyone at the moment. Besides... no pressing matters besides healing the wounded.

Some of the pirates wake up as the last of the bonds are being put on them. "ARR! Ye be better off killing us, ye landlubber scalawags!"

That, at least, Alexis immediately corrects the pirate. "Nobody is better off killing if it can be avoided. Today, it can be avoided. I highly advise you consider this in the future. It is not a glorious death to throw your life at the mercy of those who can kill you easily when all you are doing is taking money."

He looks at the clerk.  To ask "you can handle these tied up and dead bandits, right?" would be an insult so he doesn't ask.  To apologize for the bloody mess made in defense of the office would be weird too.  Beldal sticks to standard Dwarven obviousness.

"Thanks for the directions.  I'll be on my way."

It was not uncommon on the field of post battle to give aid to medics hired by the other side.  Of course, as this was frequently because both sides hired Jorasco medics, was more of a business interest thing than medical consideration.  It's a lot harder to get in serious political trouble dealing bandages to both sides than it is dealing weapons to both side though.

"Thank you for your consideration."  Eletor says to Alexis as they deal with the results of face punchy.  As the less violent work is finished Eletor stands back up, saying to Beldal "While I shall be accompanying you, knowledge beyond the possibility of ambush would allow us to aid you better in the event of one."

OOC Style: Surge used, 9/8 Surges, 82/82 HP.  Even a crit punch is fortunately only 2 hp lower than my surge value.  Had I not dumped some points into Con on my 'Con is Useless' Class, my surge value couldn't have even handled that.

Eletor is less than optimistic about any significant spoils from those desperate and/or foolish enough to attack a Kundark office with only... eight armed men, actually that wasn't as bad a plan as some when you consider it in terms of 'not dealing with those who lay waste to swaths of adversaries' and more 'default bank guards against default bank robbers'.

At the very least it should cover another day's basic living expenses, even with the terrible rate of return for non magical gear.

Re: Eberron

Alexis ponders this and senses adventure to be had. They all seem like very capable warriors who could handle most anything thrown at them, so it's not that she's worried for them. "If the invitation is still open to me, I'll be happy to join as well." she then looks at the banker. "I trust you won't need us to hand these men over to the local law enforcement, will you?"

The banker points, "I tripped a silent alarm. The law enforcement you speak of is here!"

Sure enough, in come a bunch of uniformed soldiers who check things out. After a brief question-answer session that gets them up to speed, the soldiers thank the group. "There is a bounty for these folks. You are free to have what is on them in addition to the bounty, which is 400 gold per pirate. But we did not know what was causing the trouble, so we didn't come prepared with that kind of money. However..." he looks at the banker. "That's 800 gold to each of the ones who helped take out this group of pirates. Put it on the mayor's tab." the soldier says in confidence. But he also shows the banker proof that he has such authority. The soldier then orders his men to collect the pirates and he turns to face the group. "Thanks again. You each have an audience with the mayor any time you wish. Simply turn this in at his receptionist's desk." he hands cards to Alexis, Beldal, Durtendin and Eletor. By coincidence or not, in alphabetical order.

(OOC: Add 800 gold to your total gold, folks. Which reminds me... DID we agree on a total amount of gold to spend on gear?? I'm still waiting for that...)

He hands 20 gold to each member of the team then responds to the guard.

"Not much compared to that impressive bounty.  Looking forward to meeting the mayor's acquaintance.  If you see him or someone who could let him know, you can let him know I plan to have dinner with him tonight if he's not previously engaged."

To the banker: "I don't plan on going on a shopping spree today, so if you would deposit my portion of the bounty into my account I would appreciate it."

Again to the group: "If you're of the same persuasion and happen to have accounts with House Kundarak, we could head on out now.  If not, I can wait till you have your bounty."

Re: Eberron

At Beledal's assurances that would be assassins may see sense, Eletor became certain that if not influenced by Dol Dorn, then universal spite would ensure conflict would meet them halfway (metaphorically, location wise it could be anywhere).

Regardless, Eletor shall lead the way to Beldal's destination if the Dwarf is less than certain of their own capacity to do so.  Of just follow along, both work.

"I am certain that if you decide to open an account later Alexis, one of us could help you if desired."

The trek goes mostly without incident as it's all in the city and by the time the group gets to Beldal's destination, they are already hearing word of their recent bank scenario.

During this time, Alexis pulls out a flute and plays a pretty, upbeat tune while slightly bobbing like Link would do in the Zelda 64 games. :)

Beldal is only somewhat surprised by the lack of violence on the way to the port for reasons already mentioned.

"Well here we are," he says, "Now to find the person in charge."

Experience has taught him to not say "the GUY in charge" more than any regard for political correctness.

To the nearest emplee looking person he says "I'm Beldal.  I'm told I was to be expected."

Durtendin keeps quiet during the trek to the port while keeping an eye out for trouble, just in case. The Wilden doesn't pay much attention to Alexis' music as the druid seems to be more concerned with being ready to defend against any would be attackers at a moment's notice. When Beldal approaches the nearest employee looking person Durtendin keeps an eye on the individual just in case the person is not who Beldal beleives the person is.

Dol Dorn favors violent carnage as a means of problem solving.  However, it was (usualy) not so far gone in that regard to wish for it as fervently as certain Paladins of Tempus.

That and it would required a problem violent carnage was applicable to in the first place.  Pleasant ocarina music and shortly worded requests did not fall under this category right now.

Eletor meanwhile keeps in mind of the ever important direction to keep in mind.  Up.  Hey, tower city means a lot of ledges to hide on and drop down from.

Re: Eberron

Alexis puts the flute away and pays attention to the exchange between Beldal and the employee.

Said person replies to Beldal, "You were. Show me your ID, please."

Seeing Identification Papers as verification for something relating to banks is pretty standard. Even people like Alexis and Durtendin, while more favorable to nature and the wild, have likely gotten a hold of such ID for themselves rather than deal with the headaches involved with NOT having them.

But before he can pull them out, Beldal sees a familiar face barge out of the back office. "BELDAL!" cries the dwarf who just showed his face, "GOOD to see you! What took you so long getting here? Ambushed by pirates?!"

The familiar face is a cousin of his. This dwarf is the son of Beldal's mother's sister. Meaning he doesn't bear the last name of Anvilbreaker. Rather, Silverbeard is his family name. A family with obviously close ties to the Anvilbreaker clan.

"And you brought GUESTS!" He continues, "Come back to my office, all of you and catch me up on what's new! It gets so boring here..."

The person who greeted Beldal eyebrow-twitches. For convenience of anyone who gives a care, the greeter is an elderly male gnome.

Re: Eberron

Given the nature of his mission, it would be near impossible to do his job if Beldal didn't have some means of identifying himself as the negotiator when he arrived...  Unless someone there recognized him.

"Of course," he answers the unhappy gnome with a respectful bow.

He presents the man with his I.D. and the letter of introduction he was given.

"Well met, Mr. Silverbeard," Beldal answers his cousin, "What a surprise.  Boredom is a terrible thing, I hope I can help with that.  You hit the nail on the head when you said 'ambushed by pirates.'  That's exactly what happened."

He presents an eyepatch as proof to the dwarf.

"These guests are allies who aided me in making them walk the plank.  Eletor I met first, then Alexis, then Durtendin.  He's a Wilden."

When Silverbeard leads the way, Beldal follows.

Durtendin observes Beldal's conversations with the greeter and then with the employee that seems to know Beldal. The Wilden also presents his picture ID when it is asked for.

Durtendin nods politely when Beldal introduces the Wilden Druid to Beldal's acquaintance.

When Silverbeard invites not only Beldal but the rest of the group back to his office, Durtendin follows quietly, as the Wilden continues to keep an eye out just in case something unexpected occurs, after all Durtendin is currently working as a bodyguard it doesn't make any sense to the Wilden to drop ones guard when the job has yet to be completed.

Spikesfromtheground is a bit more than shoulder tackle. She just feels silly for not having done so. Especially after all the effort her player put into making her a queen of the shoulder-tackle via feats.

Beldal hands his cousin the contract and cover letter he was given to deliver.  He's still not sure if being related to this Dwarf will be good for business or not.  He's expecting not.

"I'm sure you've heard of this group," he says, "But in case you haven't, they're one of the financial groups that backed the fight for Dwarven independance.  Needless to say, they're looking to secure that independance with trade agreements like this one.  And of course make a gold coin or two for themselves while they're at it.  I owe them, and they respect me, so I agreed to be their errand boy in this matter.  As for more capable foes attacking me or my new friends...  I'd say your bones are quite right about that."

Besides... it was a great excuse to travel far far from home.  The contract and cover letter would make it clear that the Black Hand wants to secure a trade agreement for dragon shards.  Of course, any additional trade goods would be welcome, but the primary focus is for these coveted relics.

Dragonshards, ever important to the land and it's political figures...  Except what does anyone ever even see them used for except an expensive tome replacement, or the occasionally useful quirk provided by a shard augmented weapon?

Eletor doesn't think too hard about the exact functions of the economy though.  Then you get into weird details like individual ten foot poles costing far more than a ten foot ladder, and splitting them apart to sell the poles while turning the rungs into torches.

"Are there any particular foes you expect to deal with in the near future?"  Of course, preparation would likely remain the same regardless of most potential enemies met along the way.  Do you have your weapon?  If yes, stab.

Re: Eberron

(OOC: Went back and looked through my campaign notes and was hit with a nice, big "Oh yeah! Duh!" moment. Good portions of this whole campaign, including how to start, were planned out. This should be fun...)

After the group gets their gold and their sleep, they are asked to check out some disturbances that have been going on in King's Forest. It's a mid day and the group is taking a break for lunch when they feel a small earthquake. Most earthquakes don't last long, but this keeps rumbling and the amount of which the ground quakes increases. A horrible sound can be heard like the world itself was moaning in pain and mourning.

One of the larger, closer moons is getting larger and larger as it is seen moving from its place in the sky. It goes to the horizon silently, but is seen impacting against the surface and the moon breaks into pieces, the pieces falling in many directions. One of the pieces comes flying over to King's forest and slams many miles away from the group of heroes. Within seconds, the sound of that impact is heard as if the teeth of the great dragon Eberron were grinding! Flaming trees fly and land just meters from the heroes. The clouds in the sky form into cyclones and touch down on the world as if these pillars are one last effort to keep the sky from collapsing.

A powerful, booming voice is heard and felt as if speaking to everyone's very souls, "Forgive me, my children! For all my might, I can not protect you! It is the end! Give your last goodbyes to those you love and prepare!"

Re: Eberron

Alexis grabs at her heart and collapses to the ground, crying bitter tears as she feels the world being ripped apart. She claws at the dirt beneath her and pleads with it, "No! Eberron! You can't die!" She looks up, teeth gritted. "Sovereign Host! Anyone! PLEASE! HELP!"

It's all anyone can do, really. Plea for help. Though even as Alexis is on the ground pleading, the group can see immense beings of energy walking from the four corners of the world. One of them catches another moon that was going to fall. Another of the giant beings holds its hands up as if to hold the sky in place. One giant being in particular looks directly at the group of heroes. The beings seem to match 3 of the sovereign host.

The ground continues to quake violently. In the distance, Sharn is seen being swallowed into the ground while parts of it splash into the nearby river.

(OOC: As one more note, YES the world is falling apart and will survive maybe 10 minutes. NO, your adventure doesn't end here. At least not yet. Durtendin looks around in shock at the calamity going on around him, “How can the Great Elders have permitted this to occur? Surely a Great Spirit would have seen signs of this and warned someone in time to have prevented this.” While Durtendin knows there isn't anything he can do to stop what is unfolding around the group, the Wilden is as frustrated as he is concerned about the disaster that completely drowns out the fear he feels about his own demise. Durtendin doesn't vocalize a fear nagging at the back of his mind, 'perhaps they did warn people, but whoever was warned failed in their task to prevent this'.

Durtendin's eyes dart around quickly, as if trying in vain to find a solution to what seems to be a nightmare brought to life. In a mixture of desperation, fear, and determination, Durtendin growls, “I know lamenting about not being able to stop this won't solve anything, but I wish there was something I could have done to have prevented this, did the spirits doubt what lengths I would have gone to to in order to prevent this, even now is there has to be something we can do... as long as there is life there is a way. There must be a way,” as Durtendin is pained to the point of almost being in denial of what is occurring as a result of how troubling it is for the Wilden Druid to just watch see nature being ravaged by this calamity with him being unable to do anything about it.

Re: Eberron

Eletor should probably feel more shocked by all this.  Similar questioning of the competence of Higher Beings Durtendin is voicing is also curiously lacking.

Eletor offers a hand to Alexis to raise them from the ground.  "The Gods claim there is nothing they can do, yet they still strive to stop this.  Many claim the Gods should be held to our own Mortal standards.  To do so is to offer them the same gratitude we would give any Mortal striving to stop this, even when they believe it to be impossible."

Eletor might be of the religious sort, but they never believed the gods to be infallible.  To do so would mean there would be no theoretical opportunity to punch a Dark God in the face.

Also, 'I died from a planet exploding, after the Moon hit it' is censored Metal.  So that had better be a pile of free passes to the Awesome afterlives for those dieing today.

OOC Style: Did a quick skim of the Avenger Paragon path's again, and was reminded why I took the 'human' Path, Adroit Explorer.  Anything I'd be slightly interested in is for Wis/Dex based Avengers, or of some interest but too out of theme.

Also, yay for Derail saved by campaign notes. As opposed to the traditional campaign notes doomed by derail.

Also, Eletor can Stabilize Dieing as a Minor action with guaranteed success.  Standard action would guaranteed allow Eletor to let someone use their second wind.  I get the feeling band-aids on the planet won't deal with the 'obliterated far past bloodied value' snag though, heh.

Durtendin stands still for a few moments after the group is 'displaced', contemplating the task that had just been assigned to the group and how it was far more involved than the mercenary assignment he has originally agreed to.“For all we know, we could have not only been teleported to a new location in space, but also to another time in the past. But I do not doubt that if we fail, what we saw will come to pass. I do find it troubling that we have been told to find and use an amulet, without being told what amulet we need to find or how to use it.”

When Eletor asks what lengths the Wilden would go to, Durtendin turns to the human and replies, “I'd hold nothing back. For example, if to use the amulet we have been tasked to find, whatever it is, or where-ever it is, requires the death of the user and the destruction of the user's soul, I would not hesitate to use the amulet in order to prevent that catastrophe. If it is within my power, I'll do whatever it takes to protect the world from destruction. Does that answer your question?”

Durtendin then summons forth his Bag of Holding, which he always keeps sorted within itself using the Self-Holding Bag ritual and draws forth a floating lantern which the Wilden then has float next to him in order to keep both of his hands free, before placing it back within itself.

[OOC: Self-Holding Bag is an amusing focus only (no component cost) ritual from Dragon Mag. 385 which places a bag of holding within itself for 24 hours and pretty much makes the bag impossible to take away from its 'owner' who can freely call forth, or put away, the bag with a minor action. The bag reappears at the owner's feet at the end of the ritual, but the ritual can then be performed again. It only takes 10 minutes and lasts 24 hours. Handy for people who want to travel light, or hide items they travel with.]

Just a little closer and Alexis starts hearing what Durtendin is hearing, namely the actual words. She looks confused. She nods to Beldal and says, "By all means... please do."

Eletor and Durtendin can hear the voices saying things in other languages also. Durtendin, of course, would recognize elven and primordial. Eletor would hear draconic being used. The voice tones vary also, as Alexis and Durtendin could swear what sounded like a dwarf voice was speaking elven.

Alexis nods. Once the group finally makes it to the source of the sound, there is a heap of flesh just sitting there, with mouths and eyes all over it. The mouths have sharp teeth most times, but some actually have molars while others have eyes inside the mouth. The mouths seem to be speaking the conversations heard earlier. However, when the group enters the room, the mouths do not stop "conversing" with each other.

"I can see the rumblings in the sky. There goes the setting sun"
"It's crawling back again to find me. Get it out of my mind!"
"I wanna feel- No! I wanna dream!"
"I wanna live on the inside. I gotta breathe"
"Gotta pray. I wanna heal on the inside"
"You ain't got me fooled! Am I a fool? I keep playing along..."

Re: Eberron

The beast isn't silent while Beldal and his group chatted. Upon seeing Beldal make a lot of guesses, the gibbering beast laughs. It sounds like a small crowd laughing. The beast finally manages to compose itself and a tentacle reaches inside one of the mouths to pull out a top-hat, which is placed over a different mouth. The mouth regurgitates a cigar and the tentacle lights said cigar with a torch. Yes. A torch. A single eye opens just above this mouth that, by now, seems to be drawing the most attention to itself as another tentacle places a monocle over that eye.

"I do say, ol' chap! Bravo!"

More laughter before it says, "AHEM! Excuse me... BLARRRF!" out comes a spherical trinket of some kind, about the size of a baseball. "There we are. See? It was inside." it then feeds the trinket to one of its mouths again.

Make no mistake. The other mouths are continuing to talk. Albeit in a hushed tone while this mouth has drawn attention to itself. In fact...

"Hey! I had world-saving-trinket LAST time! Can't I eat some flesh?"
"Oh, go suck on a tentacle!"
"Don't YOU treat me like a wart-sucking wilden!"
"ExCUSE you! There IS a wilden RIGHT here!"
"......heeeeheheheheheheOW!!"
"Barnyard!"

A tentacle pokes an eye.

"And this is why I wear a monocle..."

Eletor's pesky medic training and upbringing however leave him less inclined than certain shifter paladins of Dol Dorn's vacation persona would be to do that straight off.

It devours the meat messily, ripping it to pieces and gnashing at it with growls and other such scary indications of nightmarish antics. It slowly backs away from the heroes, seeming to return to normal.

"Did you hear? The gods mooned Eberron! I'll bet HE'S embarrassed!"
"That's nothing! Take that power suit away from him and I could take him!"
"Tastes like beef."
"Now see here! The polemical literature states clearly that sufficiency of attrition is not enough for even the penitent confessor to overcome the antidisestablishmentarianism of one's dispensationalistic concept of theistic determinism"

"Psst! Idiot! Yeah you! Those adventurers are still listening!"
"Bla bla bla. That's all that's coming out of your mouths."
"At least my mouths don't kiss up, fat lips!"

Upon inspecting the trinket, Eletor will notice:

It is spherical as mentioned earlier and apparently made of brass. It has 8 segments. In each segment is a different gem. The gems on one side of the sphere are bright colors (Green, Red, Blue and White respectively) while the other side has dark colors (Brown, Black, Purple and Gray). The gemstones seem to each be designed to be like dials of some kind with notches carved into the brass to indicate where the dial is set. Currently, all of the notches / dials are synchronized.

Durtendin backs off when Beldal backs away from the Gibbering Beast. Once the group is away from the beast and inspecting the trinket, Durtendin says in a surprised tone of voice, “I don't believe it, it ... it still exists. But it was only a legend I heard in my travels. While I expected the legend to have been based on some seed of truth, I never expected...” as Durtendin is sure he recognizes what this 'tinket' is but is shocked by both its discovery, and that a Gibbering Beast had possession of it.

The Wilden Druid pauses for a moment and holds up a hand as he collects his thoughts before he continues, “If this is what I believe, then it is an ancient artifact used by deities to pass through time, in order to protect existence and the flow of time. However, as even the deities fears its abuse, they increasingly disallowed its use in order to avoid the temptations to try to alter things to suit their interests. No doubt fearing the wars that would break out between them if they ever suspected that someone would misuse the relic for personal gain. The situation is truly grave for it to be enough of an emergency for them to allow its usage,” Durtendin looks hesitant to even touch the trinket due to despite what legends he's heard of the relic, he hasn't heard anything that would tell him how to operate the accursed contraption. “Just don't ask me how it works, since the legends I heard didn't cover that, just the danger it imposes. The legends had a theme involving how power can corrupt, and that even deities are not immune to being corrupted.”

Alexis blushes a little from Beldal calling her beautiful. Her inner racist ironically makes this especially pleasant since she least expected such a compliment to her from a dwarf.

The gnome hands the newspaper over. To those who can see, the date clearly reads 980 YK, which is 20 years before the world ends (1,000 YK). The headlines read that Princess Aurala of Aundair has become Queen of Aundair. But the news article the gnome is pointing to reads that House Ferrous is looking for a group of adventurers to do a job. They are paying 10,000 gold to be divided between the adventurers (This would mean 2.5k for each of us).

Frolly chuckles from Eletor's statement and says, "Ya sound like a politician there, mister!" He gives a mock-impersonation of an important person. "Dol Dorn neither confirms nor denies the intermingling of races to be cosher."

Beldal nods to Durtendin's observation.  He was aiming at letting his allies know that this whole thing has apparently already happened without sounding like a crazy.

"Impressive bounty," he says, looking at the article, "Must be very dangerous.  Right up our alley.  Thanks, Mr. Frolly.  We'll go present ourselves to House Ferrous, then.  You're welcome to tag along as far as they'll allow if you like, sir."

He leads the way like he knows where he's going.  Because he does.

Durtendin follows along as the group heads towards House Ferrous while pondering the situation. Given that Durtendin does not wish to possibly influence Beldal's past in a negative fashion, the Wilden carefully chooses his words, “I suspect that the job we are going to undertake for House Ferrous may be somehow related to the last request made of us,” as Durtendin hints to the request to save 'existence' since he feels that it would be unwise to blurt out that the group is from the future and has seen a possible manner in which the world ends.

Frolly follows the group since Beldal knows the way. Alexis is looking around in amazement. She's been here before, but... she's never time traveled. Besides, the place is always an amazing sight. "This is such an impressive place..." she comments idly. "And you all are an impressive lot!" Frolly counters. "Look atchya! You look like you've done this adventure thing for some time."

The group is fast arriving at House Ferrous.

Beldal smiles at the compliments to his team and his home.

"Glad you like," he says generically to both Alexis and Frolly, "I think you may be right, Durtendin."

Once inside House Ferrous he introduces himself and his allies by their first names.

"We're interested in the job advertised in the paper," he explains, "What exactly is it that needs done?"

Durtendin keeps a casual eye out while approaching House Ferrous with the group, not out of suspicion that someone would cause trouble, but purely out of habit due to his experiences as a mercenary for hire.

It isn't until Beldal inquires as to what the job is that Durtendin stops glancing around, with an attentive look on his face as the wilden knows that depending on the job being requested, it would be wise to consider changing which Aspect he is manifesting.

Durtendin keeps quiet for the time being as the druid figures it would be best to let Beldal talk since he knows far more about those the group is dealing with than anyone else in the group.

The man there is obviously a dwarf. He raises an eyebrow at the group. "Well.. now THIS is what I was hoping to catch the attention of with that large reward I posted!" he proclaims loudly as he stands up. "There's a mine we've hit recently that seems protected by some very strange monsters. Powerful, they are! But one look at you and your crew, I'm confident you bunch can safeguard our miners!" The dwarf has a grizzled, dirty voice like a rock monster who chain smokes. Would make great for a vocalist on a Death Metal band. "But where on Eberron are my manners?! The name's Adrik Stormfellow! Please! Have seats and introduce yo-MORADIN'S BEARD! Wha..." that last part said as he notices Durtendin.

Frolly is a little intimidated at Adrik's shock, but quickly remembers Dwarves might not even hear about Wilden out this way. "He's a wilden, sir. They are nature's creatures..."

Adrik calms a bit and grins broader. "Like I was saying! Sit! Introduce yourselves! Each at a time, tell me your name and a little about yourself! Or a lot if you like! The mining project will take a while to start back up anyway, so we have time!"

Alexis nods and has a seat, letting the others go first with introductions, lest she seem assertive.

I specialize in summoning primal spirit allies and locking down foes in order to provide strategic advantage to my comrades and myself.” For the time being, Durtendin does not know if it would be wise to mention House Tharashk, so Durtendin remains silent about which sect of druids trained him or his connection to House Tharashk.

Alexis ohs and says, "My name is Alexis. I am a warden..." she snaps her fingers. "That's where I heard your name before!" she says as she has an ah-ha moment, probably scaring Beldal until she clarifies who's name she meant. "Stormfellow... why that goes back about 20 centuries, doesn't it? Your ancestor was in mid-fight when he got struck by lightning. But rather than die, he wound up energized by it and took down the giant he was fighting.... am I remembering right?"

Adrik raises both eyebrows and grins. "Yes! Wow! I didn't know you were from around here!"

Alexis says, "I'm not. But I spent some years south a ways and learned all kinds of legends and lore about the families that live in the Mror Holds."

Adrik looks like he could burst. "Well! I'd be interested to hear you tell the tale... but what about you? Surely there is more to you than being a warden." he then looks at Eletor. "And more to you than simply healing with magic instead of divine power."

Eletor forgot there are magic healers like bards and such. Not to mention psychic and primal. But to be fair, Adrik assumed magic. Then again, it IS the second most common way to heal. Bandages? Heal check? What ARE those anyway?

Adrik laughs again and says, "Or are you bunch just as humble as you are heroic? I wouldn't doubt it. Truly an honor to be among such fine individuals!"

Frolly is quiet, but very happy Adrik is happy.

There was nothing threatening about him standing there as the shadows seemed to fade along with the wind, the temperature returning to what it had been.

Re: Eberron

Beldal raises an eyebrow at the arrival of the mysterious man and gives him a once-over with his discerning eyes.  He comes to his own conclusions and voices one of them.

"Here for the 10,000 Ferrous bounty?" he asks Criss, "If so you're welcome to join our team and take an equal share.  I prefer cooperation to competition in these matters."

He's fairly confident the rest of the team is a liiitle more concerned with, oh, saving the world than a 1/4 share of the bounty becoming a 1/5 share.  As for healing magic vs. divine, for some reason he had guessed Eletor to be more likely a practitioner of the ancient art of bandaging than singing a wound closed.  Or alchemy.

Beldal turns back to Adrik and smiles briefly at the compliment.  Ferrous is notorious for it's double-dealers and sweet-talkers, but something feels so very genuine about Adrik.  The kind of man that makes Beldal feel ashamed of himself.  The smile fades like a tattoo artist mercenary recalling the day he failed to save a suicidal woman.  He hardens his eyes to keep them from being downcast.

"Thank you," he answers unconvincingly, "I like to be known as a practical man more than anything.  Hence the earlier question.  If we could talk with an eye witness or two, maybe they could help us prepare for what we're up against."

Eletor finds nothing threatening about the man who just made a ominous Maleficent style entrance of cold and darkness.  Eletor's passive Insight already touches on the epic scale so he sees past the obviously villainous entrance special effects to the fact they are not here to curse their first born child with a ridiculous fate.

"err, merely bandages and other mundane aid.  Although there is oddly less risk of the patient dieing if you are skilled enough to cure them of illness that way than through ritual." Pull off a heal check, patient cured.  Pull off the proper ritual, you could at worst detonate the patient, and on average deal half their Hitpoints in damage while you cure them.

"As many coming to our aid that will fit where we must travel is a welcome situation indeed."

Adrik says, "Ah." with a smile as Criss makes his entrance. "Come! Sit! Join us! Tell us of yourself and why you are here..."

Alexis hugs herself from the cold and looks over at the man with a "wha?" look. She has adventured long enough to know, though, that such powers come from a number of means and that people who wield such powers are not necessarily evil every time. Some of them are even good. For now, though, she has enough of an excuse not to talk to the man yet since he has been asked now by Beldal AND Adrik to introduce himself.

Once Criss says his piece (That means this will happen AFTER Criss introduces himself and such, but Criss can feel free to post stuff that happens after Frolly describes the monsters), Adrik looks at Frolly and nods. Frolly steps forward.

"I am a witness." Frolly admits. "I'll tell you what I saw; An overgrown... spider.. thing... I think? I mean, it had spider legs made of stone and the body was a big mouth with dozens of sharp teeth and lava oozing from it's cracked rock skin. The other thing was, well, I honestly don't know how to describe it. But I'll try. This thing had spider legs too, but its forelegs were more like arms with claws. And it's head was like a snake with a raptor's face and a lion's mane. It wore armor like it was some kind of sentient creature."

Eletor nods at the description given of the problems Frolly survived.  "Ah, those would be a Magma Strider and Neogi, possibly Neogi slavers.  A magma strider... Is pretty much what it looks like, the only less than obvious but very unfortunate detail being the fact they seem to effortlessly light people on fire who try to take advantages of apparent opportunities."  Seriously, no hit check.  Just 'anything that makes an AoO takes Save ends Ongoing fire ouch.  Matt 'Built for AoO' Lastnamenotthoughtof would hate that so much.

"The Neogi are basically Slavers with extras.  From the Far realm like the Mind Flayers have come from" Hey, even though it's probably a higher Check for Mind Flayer knowledge it's right there in the Neogi details.  "They don't like them, but not many do.  But it comes down to 'slavers with poison and psyhic powers'.  As opposed to say, Gnolls which would be 'slavers with more cannibalism and Demon worship than usual'."

Eletor considers for another moment, then shrugs "As for why they would be there specifically, I can not guess beyond 'underground monsters and slavers, underground' without more knowledge of anything that may be of significance where they have invaded.  As for an additional companion upon out travels, I believe it will be for the best."

OOC Style:  Eletor rocked the face off the Arcana/Dungeroneering checks, and he's not even trained in em (but DOES have high relevant stats).  Assume Eletor fills in any of the details I haven't listed in this post if asked.

However since we know the Magma Striders will utilize fire damage in some capacity, we might consider finding ways to mitigate that for those fights. And with mentioning that the Neogi use poison and psychic powers indicates that we should be ready to deal with those types of threats as well. Potions of Resistance are rather cheap.”

Alexis definitely knows from the magma beasts. The Neogi are a new one for her, though. At least, what Eletor describes. She is positive, however, these are all NOT natural creatures.

Alexis composes herself, giving an indifferent feel when Criss sits next to her. She doesn't want to be rude, but at the same time, this is serious business. "Durtendin's right. Adrik? Know where we could pick up such potions?"

Adrik nods. "Frolly can show you to the potion shop. And answer any more questions you may have. But now that I've seen you folks, I'm convinced you are the bunch for the job."

Alexis asks, "Is there anything you can add for us, though? I mean... other than to see us and be persuaded we're good for the job, was there any other reasons for us to be in this office?"

Adrik headshakes. "Not for now. But please come back for payment and good times once you've kicked those foul beasts out of our mines!"

Alexis gets up, bows, and leads the others out with Frolly.

(Rolled high on arcana. Rolled 1 on dungeoneering. Rolled high on nature. And have a high nature score. Elf rage kicking in. Didn't need to roll that, considering there was no nature check to be had, but Alexis tends to look at things from that viewpoint; "Is it from nature?" and all. Eletor also pointed out the Far Realm business, so now Alexis' suspicion is confirmed.)

Creatures of the Far Realm?!  Here?!  But why?!  Could there be any connection to that beast from earlier?  Beldal's brow furrows as he broods over this distressing news.  He notes that none of his allies even remotely hesitated to continue on and is impressed with their resolve.  The Far Realm even gave the gods pause...  Perhaps that's what caused the catastrophe of the future!  It's starting to make some sense why they were sent to this time and place then...

Beldal follows Frolly, a great deal more impressed with the little man for having survived an encounter with those beasts.  Ah.  he old potion shop.  Beldal used to sneak peeks inside because the place was off limits to him when he was a child.  Now entering such a place is no big deal.  And yet, it is a big deal.  After all, this is a trip to the past.  Last he saw this place, it was a smoldering ruin.  And that was years ago.

It's a good thing Beldal's wearing a full face shield or the anguish on his face would draw a lot of unwanted attention.  Beldal shops for potions with the others, regretting that he had that large reward put into the bank of the future rather than into his pockets.

"Mr. Frolly," he says at last in a serious tone, "Could you guess at how many of those creatures there are down there?  Did they speak a language?  Any guesses at what they were after?  How well organized they were?"

Re: Eberron

Eletor considers Durtendin's advice,  "Ensuring you are more fireproof when dealing with those that light you on fire is a good thing.  However a prolonged reliance upon them will still be a detriment to our health if we have to deal with many of them.  If not nearly to the degree being lit on fire repeatedly would cause, we should keep that in mind."  Sure, outright ignoring all ongoing 5 Fire/aura 5 Fire damage when you're a purely melee sort much more squishy than other melee sorts is a good thing, and will far outstrip the value of a heal surge.  But those are still heal surges lost.

"It is also a rare luxury to be able to make such advanced preparation in the first place.  So you again have our thanks Frolly."

OOC Style: Eletor could easily afford +2 Fire resist and +2 Psi resist gear.  But Eletor Likes having +3's (and already has to pay for an additional implement, at lower level, reason I rearranged for pure melee) and considering how squishy Avengers are compared to other melee suckers, +3 Armor/Neck ASAP is good.  Especially when 'inherent' boost for armor/neck doesn't turn up until 'this is the last level that plus is viable for' like getting free +6 defenses at level 29 out of 30 scale useless.

That, and I always take forever even editing my sheets.  So a time out for me to reconsider my inventory could well derail the thread for months.

Also, a sure sign shops and products exist purely for the sake of PCs.  When many product require heal surges to use, something the vast majority of existence does not possess.

Re: Eberron

Durtendin nods to Eletor and replies, "Well I doubt everyone is going to need to be chugging them down every fight, but having a few will be useful.”

As Durtendin shops for potions he realizes that the portion of his wealth that is in the bank is lost to him for the foreseeable future given how the group's time traveling is going to preclude him from going to a time when he can access the money. However Durtendin is glad that he did keep enough funds on himself to cover more minor expenditures such as the current shopping for potions.

While looking through the potions, Durtendin notices an alternative to Potions of Fire Resistance and speaks up, "While they cost a little more, Fire Beetle Potions can be substituted for Potions of Fire Resistance as it provides everything a Potion of Fire Resistance does and more, but I'd only recommend them to those who plan on trading blows with the Magma Striders.”

As Durtending figures he'll be immobilizing a Magma Strider with his Grasping Claws, that strider is probably going to be focusing on him, and thus the added benefit from Fire Beetle Potions would probably be useful for him. Durtendin then picks out two of the Fire Beetle Potions and two Potions of Poison Resistance for himself as he figures that will be sufficient.

[OOC: Actually all NPCs and monsters by default have 1 healing surge per tier, but are also only expected to be involved in one encounter so are not expected to use multiple healing surges in an encounter, especially since they have so few reasons to spend healing surges.
On another note, I forgot that 1 platinum piece is 100 gold pieces as for some reason I kept thinking it was 10 gold pieces, that means instead of thinking I only have 120gp on me, I have 1120 on me with the rest in the bank.

Potions purchased:
2 Potions of Poison Resistance (Resist 5 Poison for an encounter) 40gp each
2 Fire Beetle Potions (5 Temporary HP and Resist 5 Fire for an encounter) 75gp each
Also since a Fire Beetle Potion is not a 'Potion of Resistance' you can stack the two types of potions together in a single fight, if you wanted, just remember doing that is using two healing surges.
Total Cost is 230gp, leaving Durtendin with 8pp 90gp and 7sp on him.]

A young dwarf girl, probably about 10 or so years old, comes into the shop. She's rather lovely and has a bright smile, but... looks awfully familiar to Beldal. She is carrying a basket full of blueberry muffins that smell delicious and fesh-baked. What Beldal's friends don't know is that to Beldal, those are actually blues-berry flavored emo-mcmuffins.

Meanwhile, Alexis thanked Criss for his information and Durtendin for his advice. "So what is it you do, Criss? What manner of magic is it you practice?" after all, she could FEEL it wasn't primal in nature.

Eletor considers Durtendin's suggestions and his own situation.  "I do believe I have just enough to manage adequate fireproofing without resorting to alchemical performance enhancers.  Though I will be somewhat safe from the Striders more instantaneous methods, it wouldn't hurt to work with a Glaive."  Eletor's current pre Edit Inventory has Dynamic weapon anyways.

At Beledal's stumbling retreat, Eletor quietly follows after intent on ensuring thr Dwarf will be allright, but will not pry unless they want to talk about it.

And with a Passive Insight of Elevenity billion, Eletor should hopefully be able to tell if he wants to or not.

OOC Style: Aren't the potions, potions of straight up resistance and you pick resistance gained when you chug them? (part of why you can only have one Resistance Potion effect at a time I guess).  Why mention Poison potions specifically?(aside to tell the difference between the Fire beetle ones).

I also just noticed, if the Damage types listed in the Resistance potion details are all it can do... Then they don't work for Radiant or Force damage

Re: Eberron

Durtendin nods in responce to Eletor's comment and replies, “However in combat, I will not have the luxury of a melee weapon with reach, I fight up close. We have much to do, and time may not be on our side.”

When Beledal steps away from the child, Durtendin figures it is best to not interfere since this is the town Beledal grew up in and he figures that he knows the child, and her fate... with having already purchased what he intended to, he makes towards the exit along with Beledal to try to comfort the Dwarf, as Durtendin wonders how he would react if he saw a someone he had lost while on this journey through time... and if there is no fate but what we can make for ourselves with the group on this quest to change the future, then maybe the group can also set things into motion to save the childhood 'acquantence' of Beledal's and correct other things that went wrong, perhaps only by correcting those past 'mistakes', can the world be saved.

[OOC: The type of resistance provided by the potion is determined when the potion is created not consumed. Read the 2nd to last sentence, and yes there are not radiant or force for potions of resistance. Fortunately radiant and force are two of the rarer types of damage.

And yes, Durtendin is taking a sort of quantum leap style approach to the quest as he figures that the artifact is fated to take the group not to where it wants to go, but to where it needs to be, so why not do what can be done to save those who can be saved, since someone saved might be the individual that helps avoid the destruction that will come to pass if the group fails. So why not try to set things into motion to insure that this village will avoid being destroyed in the 'altered' timeline the group is trying to create.]

Re: Eberron

It doesn't take much insight or perception to see Beldal was deeply disturbed. Alexis says to Criss, "Please excuse me." and exits the shop as well, having already gotten what she needed. Namely what was recommended. "Beldal..." she starts when she sets eyes on him. The elf lady goes to be beside him and asks, "Are you OK? What's the matter?" She considers speaking in Dwarven to keep their conversation slightly more private, but for now leaves the trust and such in Beldal's hands. Even though the Dwarf doesn't yet know Alexis can speak Dwarven.

For the purposes of shopping, the shop keeper DOES have potions asked for.

As the elvish woman excuses himself, the man nods slowly before following, having nothing more to do inside.  Outside, he doesn't say anything, but merely watches as the two others try to comfort the dwarf.  Completely unaware of what was going on with him, he opted to stay quiet for the time being.  Merely listen and learn.

A sound like grinding gravel comes from Beldal's throat as he struggles to fight back the tears.

"Need... time... alone... friend," is all he manages to force out before staggering in the direction of the cemetery like a drunk.

The memories spin around his head like specters, mocking his failure.  The sound of his wife's voice.  The sparkle in her eyes.  The blush on her cheeks.  And that proud, gentle smile when she cradled their firstborn.  The sounds of screaming, sobbing families.  The questions of how the enemy could have caught the city off guard.  Flames.  Smoke.  Smell of scorched flesh.  Too much.  Too much.

Re: Eberron

Eletor while somewhat practiced at the practice of 'Dol Dorn Is Awesome', is less so in the art of comforting moral support in times of personal crisis.  However, their experience in the teachings of Dol Dorn does recognize a Manly Man of Manlyness can not properly get their brood on in such unisolated conditions, and as such leaves Beldal be for now.

Besides which, somebody has to pay attention to their latest travel pal.  "So tell me, would your claims be of the dramatically metaphorical or literal sort Criss?  While I do not doubt their application frequently meets the approval of Dol Dorn, their exact nature could prove important in later tasks to come.  The more infernally inclined would be at a possible disadvantage in regards to our current task for example."

Durtendin looks at Beldal and says, “ When you are ready to talk to us, I will be ready to listen and discuss how we can insure everyone will be able to the live long and happy lives they deserve. While our primary goal is to prevent certain events that have not yet occurred from taking place. I know of nothing that would prevent us from setting things in motion that would prevent other undesirable events you fear from occurring as well.” As the Wilden Druid still thinks that if deities are wanting the group to save the world, how can the group know that saving a village won't help towards that goal. However since Durtendin doesn't want to mention anything obvious that hints of we come from your future to anyone not knowing the future the group wises to avert, he helps he has chosen his words carefully enough to conceal what he is really saying from everyone else but the group. After all, how often does a group get to go back in time and have a chance to set things into motion that could prevent a town from being destroyed in its future.

Re: Eberron

Alexis lets Beldal go. He called her friend. That didn't take long. She is sad, though, watching him walk away deep in hurt. She then faces the others once Beldal is out of hearing range (or out of sight). "Durtendin's right. We have nothing to lose by righting wrongs we always thought were impossible to change. Now that we can, all of our actions can only lead to good." after all... the world will end. Butterfly effect be damned. If there's no Butterfly, then there is nothing to worry about with changing the past.

She then pays attention as Eletor asks Criss his question. Alexis is curious too how the warlock's powers work. She had admittedly not teamed up with a dark pact before.

He hadn't really said anything since leaving the store, but found himself curiously surprised when Eletor approached him and asked him a rather harmless question.  My claims are quite literal, my friend.  My powers are dark and even most warlocks do not dare to delve into the realm that I have.  I can understand your concern though, but allow me to demonstrate.  He said, chanting words of a language that only warlocks know, spidery words of magic before an orb of pure dark energy began to form in his hand.

Re: Eberron

Eletor considers Criss's explanation.  "While I have little personal basis to judge how valid your claims are, it does seem that pacts with Fey aspects are the sort you hear about most often compared to the Dark."  When you hear about a Warlock, most often people think about pacts with in fernal beings.  When you hear about a Warlock who was around recently, most often it's about a Fey Pact Warlock running around (or some other CHA based varient).  Dark pact, not so much.

He nods in approval to the input from his allies he has known for more than an hour.  "It would be shameful of us to ignore you in this time of personal and public need.  I shall go with you and suspect the rest of us will do so as well."

OOC Style: Pure ARG for the loss of your computer.  Hope things work out as well as they can for you.  I had a near miss on that regard myself a bit back (luckily, some reason it reformatted my other drive instead of main drive.  lost a bunch of stuff but not the RPOL stuff.

"We stick together from now on... through everything." sure, she's thinking they can't AFFORD to split the party for any reason. But she's also thinking about Beldal's feelings and how hopefully, these events will not weaken the group or Beldal, but rather strengthen them.

Soon, the bunch arrive at Beldal's old home. It is exactly as he remembers from his childhood...

The surprise on Beldal's face is genuine.  But for a different reason than he's letting on.

Beldal repeats the story for the boy, again leaving off the all important name of who the person responsible.

"By the time all this happens, you'll be a man.  A soldier trusted with the defense of the city.  Be sure that you and your friends are ready."

Re: Eberron

Eletor would hope that Beldal doesn't become an accountant due to the 'If you *censored* up, people will DIE' talk.  But he doesn't need to because otherwise Beldal would have exploded mid conversation...  But then having had this conversation right now would mean Beldal wouldn't be here to have this conversation.  Which would mean it's time to remember wise words of lore.

Dol Dorn will not think too hard about time travel and just roll with it. Just so long as you don't do anything retarded.*

"I suppose this would be the time you tell yourself things only you would know after initial disbelief?" Well, only possibly for Dol Dorn to know outside of several dozen arcane and divine methods.... Shut up logic.

OOC Style: *Dol Dorn's logic of time travel paraphrased from Homestuck... MAN I got a lot of that to catch up on.  Also *eyes Beldal's Avatar Icon* I can't possibly see how Beledal's own mother would not recognize Beledal through a full face helmet ;P  Nevermind he likely doesn't have that as part of his actual look.

Although the Wilden Druid nods when 'adult' Beldal introduces him, he remains quiet till Eletor speaks up. At that time Durtendin softly retorts to Eletor, “The problem with trying to use logic, is that many do not grasp it. Although in such cases, how can someone throw logic out the window if they can't even grasp it?”

Durtendin then says for everyone here, “It may be better to explain in more detail, yet in the manner that a young-ling will understand in order to avoid the fate that we saw from occurring. Fate is not set in stone, it is malleable like clay and there is still time to mold it into a better shape than what we saw.”

"On the contrary," Alexis answers Eletor, "there would be such a need that the universe continuing to exist would rely upon them. Thankfully, fate is a concept that only exists in theory. By its true definition, fate is unavoidable. So if you can avoid it, it is no longer fate." Of course, in the Eberron setting, there ARE no gods of fate, technically speaking, unless you believe in fate and put it in with the Sovereign Host's "we are the gods of everything else" portfolio. So it all works out.

As a paragon tier elf, Alexis likely could have heard what Durtendin said to Eletor and what Eletor said in reply. But Alexis doesn't comment on it whether she heard them or not.

Eletor, as the sole party member with Religion training is offhandedly written off as wrong.  Just like all religious authorities.  A larger point of consideration will of course be the 'what does happen to PC Beldal if they manage to edit his own Backstory.  This would be found out either soon enough, or in a very long time from their perspective.

At least 'meeting your past self destroys existence' has already been written off.  Unless that's why they were here in the first place.

Re: Eberron

Somehow, Alexis' player was afraid Eletor would feel written off. But that wasn't the case. Alexis wanted to challenge the religious authority to get him to speak his mind and debate a little. Didn't work. She wonders whether this is a good thing or a bad thing. On one hand, it's good because it's a sign of Eletor's consistent humility. On the other hand, maybe he's just the kind to seethe in brooding annoyance at someone rather than speak his mind, which could be dangerous later. Or he could just be too lazy to debate. Or Alexis intimidates him somehow. Or he could even just feel Alexis is right. No way of her knowing, but all those possibilities run through her head.

She nods in agreement with Eletor to Beldal and gets underway towards the place where the encounter will happen. When they get there, the place is empty due to everyone not daring to set foot there ever since the monsters showed up. Alexis looks around. She doesn't want to say anything lest the sound give them away to ambushers. She is genuinely nervous as the creatures described to her were still not something she has run across.
