Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

Sandpoint:
The town of Sandpoint is small town, measuring only about 750 feet East-to-West at it's widest point and about 1200 to 1350 feet North-to-South at it's longest point.

The Swallowtail Festival begins promptly, as scheduled, on the first day of autumn. The square before the church quickly becomes crowded as locals and travelers arrive, and several merchant tents featuring food, clothes, local crafts, and souvenirs are there to meet them.

The turnout for the opening speeches is quite respectable, and the four keynote speakers each deliver short but well-received welcomes to the festival. Mayor Deverin’s friendly attitude and excitement prove contagious as she welcomes visitors to town and jokes about how even Larz Rovanky, the local tanner (and notorious workaholic) managed to tear himself away from the tannery to attend, much to everyone’s but Larz’s amusement.

Sheriff Hemlock brings the crowd down a bit with his dour mood, his reminder to be safe around the evening’s bonfire, and his request for a moment of silence to remember those who lost their lives in the fire that claimed the town’s previous church five years ago.

Fortunately, Cyrdak Drokkus is more than up to the challenge of bringing the crowd’s mood back up with his rousing anecdotes as he delivers a not-completely-irreverent recap of the long process the town went through to finance and construct the new cathedral. He throws in a bit of self-promotion at the end, as is his wont, inviting everyone to stop by the Sandpoint Theater the following evening to check out his new production of “The Harpy’s Curse,” revealing that the lead role of Avisera the harpy queen will be played by none other than the famous Magnimarian diva Allishanda!

Finally, Father Zantus steps up give a short speech thanking everyone for coming before declaring the Swallowtail Festival underway.

Please introduce your characters. I'm actually having it that Mittens, Raichel and Timothius are all citizens of sandpoint for several reasons; 1) Convenience, 2) It seems a quaint enough town to start in as a "home town" for the trio of "loved and taught how to love" siblings, 3) This way people of Sandpoint won't be ooing and ahing over the trio and we can get on with the story sooner than later. The ooing and ahing can happen elsewhere. :) Last, but not least, 4) Mittens was preparing to set out for adventure anyway and the siblings were GOING to stay behind... but adventure is going to come to them and prove the younger twins are capable and should stay with Mitts.

Fun fact: Sandpoint is the exact same start location as Jade Regent. But Rise of the Runelords starts differently anyhow and happens *before* Jade does. By probably a factor of weeks or even months.

FYI on gold: gold value translates roughly the same from Pathfinder to 4e. So for purposes of things like "this should be enough to buy a TOWN", gold still works about the same. GEAR is the only thing that seems to be different in expense. With that in mind, cost to stay at an inn, get someone's services, etc, will all stay the same.

Re: Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

If this were a cutscene, then the mirrored 'Welcome to Sandpoint' sign would have been a great prop give the audience their first look at both the location, and Monk.

As this is text based, you will instead have to take our word for it that he is a short haired 'Aren't you a little short to be Captain America?'.  It's somewhat more difficult to look imposing when five foot five doesn't even bring your brown eyes level with some of the native nomads, but that was okay with Monk.

When you have a rather aimless travel route, going along with others towards an apparently nice town having a 'hey our church isn't burnt down anymore' festival.   Travel clothes and a travel worn staff (if one was generous enough to call it such) meant he didn't even stick out all that much compared to some.

Still, Monk has to wonder about this town, if the local sheriff has to remind the locals FIRE HOT, DO NOT GO IN FIRE.

Re: Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

Mittens enjoyed Cyrdak's anecdotes and applauded.  Now that the fest is officially started, she goes for some festive sweet treat and offers to share with her sibs.

"Nice little going-away party this'll make," she says with a grin, "I might even miss this place."

Re: Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

Timothius says, "Might? It's home..." he mews.

Raichel says, "The late unpleasantness has most of the people who live here not too happy about Sandpoint."

Timothius frowns. "Yeah, but you and I still live here, Raichel."

Raichel raises a finger. "Nownow.. You can miss people and still not miss the place they live, Timothius."

Timothius mutters, "People are what make a place..."

Raichel says, "Well speaking of locations, where should we go first?"

Timothius says, "Why not just browse the kiosks here at the square first, and then if we ever wanna take a break, we could give Risa's a visit."

Raichel says, "She might actually have a kiosk here... There sure are a lot of visitors today."

Of course, while the citizens of Sandpoint don't stare at the kitty trio, visitors certainly do. One visitor apparently can NOT hold his liquor and has gotten drunk already. He spots Monk and aims to bump into the guy on purpose.

Monk sighs (Once. snort not included).  Sidestepping the obvious drunk is what would sound like the best option, but then the guy would probably just trip and land face first through a display table leading into a Rube Goldberg induced riot.

Sadly, we're narrating from experience there.

So instead, Monk simply stops and waits for the slightly less impactful inevitable.

Re: Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

While Monk is clearly not a dwarf, (needs more beard), Mittens can't help but be amused with the comical futility of the drunk's plan given his target's Captain America build.  She can think of several pranks to pull on the inebriated moron to save him from his collision with destiny, she can't help but be overwhelmingly curious about the outcome if she doesn't interfere.  So instead she reaches to arm-around both her sibs in order to turn them in the direction of the impending amusement, but at least spends a moment to answer Timothius' objection.

"What Raichel said.  How do you expect me to help stop villains from burning down my home town's new church if I don't go out into the world to gain experience in stopping villains?  I've learned all I can learn from training.  It's time to put what I've learned into practice!"

Re: Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

The drunk bumps into Monk just as Mittens gets her two siblings to look. So it's entirely too late for either of them to prevent that. Not that it matters. The guy merely bumped into Monk. It doesn't hurt or even budge Monk. However... "HEY! Watch where you're GOING, you big JERK!" the drunk yells at Monk. And with that, the guy throws a punch at Monk.

Raichel begins charging towards the pair, but won't get there before Monk can act.

Not even rolling it. The guy is drunk and his only experience with fighting is 3 or so times he has actually not fallen unconscious from drunkenness and got his butt kicked in a bar brawl.

Re: Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

Monk just takes it in the shoulder (literally shrugging off the drunken swing), he does not attempt to appeal to reason, so much as he attempts to appeal to the average dislike of consequences for one's actions.

"The Sherriff is right there.  Do you really want to spend the festival locked up after only being here for three minutes?"  Sure, it would save a lot of people trouble if he just decked the guy.  But Monk didn't feel like joining the guy in lock up either.

Though from the look on her face, the Shifter might have a flying clothesline to take that choice out of his hands.

Mittens knows that Raichel can handle this without getting in trouble but has her doubts about her own ability to stay out of lockup.  Given the lack of concern on the buff stranger's face, he can probably handle himself too.  So she walks in their direction without even bothering to draw her sword.

"Extra!  Extra!  Read all about it!  Tourist assaulted by local drunk in full view of sheriff!  Local hero Raichel saves the day by using precision non-lethal martial arts techniques!  Sheriff thanks her for dealing with the punk so gently before her EXCEEDINGLY VIOLENT sister INCINERATED him with a BUILDING SIZED FIREBALL!"

She puts on an evil grin and her hand begins to catch fire!

Raichel goes to the drunk, who is currently distracted with Mittens' monologue. "Ah! Mittens! Your hand's on fire!" The drunk grabs some water from a nearby barrel and goes to splash Mittens with the water, causing her to be drenched and her two siblings to get splashed a bit. Though Raichel puts the guy in a lock immediately afterwords.

Since it's a cantrip, the fire is magical and doesn't get extinguished. That doesn't stop the fact the drunk totally drenched the cat.

The sheriff is approaching, but not there just yet. "Ken... you're drunk. While I appreciate your concern for my sister's well-being, she's OK. Now appologise to the stranger."

Ken just goes limp in Raichel's grip, belching to the side and making her wrinkle her nose. "ewww...."

Drunk guy ranged splash attack v Everyone's reflex. 15! Hits the siblings and misses Monk. No damage. Just wetness.

Monk may be a 'Violence IS the answer' guy at times when it's convenient, but somehow threats of building sized fireballs for drinking in public seems a touch, oh, crazy.

He avoids wetness thanks to being in the opposite direction of the thrown water Totally having good reflexes.  At least he can respect a good headlock, even if he is facepalming at the situation.  "Thank you, locals do tend to be more well received by the law enforcement than passing strangers I have found."

She dries off Raichel's clothes.  With MAGIC!  Then moves on to drying off Timothius and herself.

He moves over to Monk and says, "Try not to be too upset with him. He's weak to peer pressure and some of the guys here think it's funny to pressure him into drinking when they know he gets drunk easily."

The sheriff arrives and sees unconscious Ken. He then looks at Raichel, who explains what happened. The sheriff looks at Monk. "Pressing charges?"

Monk just gets 'one of those' pointing to the closest finished kabob available.  At least Raichel looks better with her flexing, but that might also be a factor of wardrobe and 'knows how to properly flex' as much as the fact she's a nice girl who probably hasn't been hit in the head with a bandit's club before.

Adventuring tends to sting.  Way more than spicy food.

Re: Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

The twins both seem very happy about the festival. Then again, so does EVERY local. Like this festival is a bigger deal than one might think. Once fed, the twins drag Mittens and Monk to a craft table to do some crafts. Then they watch a magician do some tricks. He does what would be "generic" or "cliche" magic tricks by modern day standards, but Golarian doesn't have television, so unless you are an adventurer who gets out a lot, magic tricks are rare and exciting.

Next stop, Raichel and Timothius seem to eyeball clothing. Raichel because she's a girl. Timothius because he just likes fancy clothing. Both because they always like making their clothes match some way (whether by wearing the exact same clothing or having some kind of "theme" or color in common). Of course, both twins are more than happy to tell Monk about Sandpoint and that, of ALL the souvenirs Monk should get, the commemorative Swallowtail Festival Desna holy symbol, which marks this special occasion. "It's more than just a festival medallion" Raichel explains, "It represents a turning point in Sandpoint's history. So not only does this medallion represent Sandpoint's festival, in a way, in represents the hopes and dreams of Sandpoint's people. So it is the best souvenir for saying you were at Sandpoint."

The nice shifters do seem enthusiastic about it.  So Monk can probably afford to get a commemorative knickknack on his limited budget (Good thing cloth armor and sticks are cheap for chargen!).  "Well, at least it's a nice symbol in the first place too."

Mits applauded enthusiastically for the magician.  Decent entertainment like his was hard to come by around here.  And she can appreciate the mystery of his style of magic for similar reasons to Monk's

"Just so long as you don't include Mittens among 'Sandpoint's People'," Mittens says with airquotes, "My symbol of freedom is the flaming sword, not a butterfly."

She refrains from her usual "gods shmods" mini rant because her lil bro is present, but by now he's more than familiar from the rumor mill that Mits isn't very reverent of any of the gods.  Not even the "good" ones.

Re: Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

A nearby local says, "A sword... to me, that just symbolizes mankind's enslavement to violence. Some freedom. A butterfly is a symbol of freedom whether you're religious or not, since the caterpillar has been set free to venture out into the sky."

Timothius doesn't see any wide-mouthed frogs. He wouldn't have said all that, but he was thinking every word of it, word-for-word. Like Mittens, he kept his opinions to himself lest he upset his sisters. Because, let's face it... Raichel and Mittens believe in fighting, no matter how many things Raichel and Timothius agree on.

Timothius adds to the statement, however, to at least stand up for his sisters, "Sadly, the price of freedom has always been violence, so a sword has just as much right to symbolize freedom..." that last part sounded like Timothius was more trying to persuade himself as he sounded like he didn't even believe in the words coming from his mouth. "...but yes. For the people of Sandpoint, this is a chance to re-sanctify this town after the late unpleasantness. Whatever happened then was unholy and whatever a person's stance on the gods, keeping people from being homicidal is something I think anyone can agree is 'setting Sandpoint free'.... right?"

What Timothius is referring to that Mittens would have gotten a general vibe for, but not agreed with the religious nature of: For five years, the faithful of Sandpoint have attended church in smaller wooden structures rebuilt after fire destroyed the previous temple, and while their new pastor Abstalar was helpful, kind, and wise, church wasn’t the same. Now, the new cathedral is finally done. All that remains is for the Swallowtail Festival to renew the site’s blessings from the gods and it will be as if the Sandpoint Fire had never occurred.

Re: Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

Mittens could probably be labeled an agnostic of the weird variety that intends to find out if gods are real by hunting the evil ones down.

"Even Desna, goddess of freedom, does not support anyone's freedom to be evil," Mittens agrees, "And to this end, her favored weapon is a blade!  Do you think Rovagug and his spawn can be defeated by throwing butterflies at them?  Nonsense!  My brother speaks truth!  The butterfly can fly free only because the blade-beak of the stork eats the frog that would have the butterfly for breakfast!"

She arm-arounds Timothius with a proud grin, touched that he would support her even if he finds her violence distasteful.

"And let's not forget that everything can be twisted to evil.  Both the blade and the butterfly.  Our own town's beautiful butterfly, Nualia, 'the blessed child of Desna' was cruelly used and treated like a freak because of her beauty.  Then her deformed stillborn child was taken from her to be burned followed by her and her father dying in the church's flames!  You can't tell me that Desna would approve of that!  So unless you ever stood up to the bullies that tormented her in life, don't talk to me about butterflies."

Re: Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

The random local just rolls his eyes. After the clothing stop and the points being made by the people present, Timothius snaps his fingers in an "ah-ha" moment. "Veznutt." he says before looking at Monk. "No doubt he's open for business and will get a decent turn out with all the visitors we expect to have today. Veznutt has all kinds of maps from here and all around! I'm sure you'll find some useful stuff there!"

Re: Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

Monk decides it might be best to not voice his opinion that up until now, his deepest though on butterflies was that they seemed kind of lazy.  This was including having heard strange metaphors involving butterflies and bees regarding combat.

"Wait, the whole 'So good looking it's a curse' thing actually happens?  That's terrible, I thought it was just a product of cheap romance novelists."  She's far too attractive and just had a tragic loss of her child!  Torch em!  And now, I can finally marry the Ugly witch!... Wait, is this white out?

He looks over to Tim at his suggestion,  "While I have heard some claim the journey is more important that the destination, not getting lost has a certain appeal to it."

Mittens nods sagely to Monk's question.  "Jealousy is an ugly thing.  As are silly superstitions that her touch could cure warts and rashes, that locks of her hair brewed into tea could increase fertility, and that her voice could drive out evil spirits.  In spite of her objections to the endless awkward and humiliating requests over the years that made her feel like a freak, they never stopped."

She follows along to the purveyor of maps.  "Monk's point is a good one."

Re: Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

Raichel looks rather upset about the topic of the pretty villain. "She was attractive, yes. But people made her sad, angry, and bitter. It's like seeing fresh snow get shoveled with the wet dirt..." she flicks an ear at the mention of a journey and seems to invite the change of topic.

Raichel laces her fingers together and brings her hands up to her chest smiling at the sky as she says, "A map can't capture the sun trickling through the leaves of the trees as you hear the songs of the birds... or the scent of the air as you create a campfire." she then looks back at Monk. "So don't worry. The journey is FAR from ruined by a map."

At the very least, a Map can CAUSE the scent of a campfire.  If you had a thing about burning maps instead of firewood.  Bit of a stretch actually.

Mittens browses the shop with a tail-wag.  She can't help it.  Even though she's practically memorized every map here, just the idea of exotic far-away lands just waiting to be explored still excites her.

Re: Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

Maps of local regions, from the immediate vicinity up to the whole of Varisia and the Storval Plateau, can be purchased from Veznutt for prices ranging from 5 gp to 100 gp, depending on the size and level of detail.

One of the yay things about the festival is that lunch is free. The people all gather around and watch more entertainment. A jester juggles, a comedian makes the people laugh, and the whole thing is a merry time. The twins just love it and seem to really get their esteem lifted from the idea of being Monk's guide all day. It's a quaint town, to be sure. Having its own charm and peculiarities like any small town.

But eventually, the sun begins to set. A sharp retort, like the crack of distant thunder, slices through the excited crowd as the sun’s setting rays paint the western sky. A stray dog that has crawled under a nearby wagon to sleep starts awake, and the buzz of two dozen conversations quickly hushes as all heads turn toward the central podium, where a beaming Father Zantus has taken the stage. He clears his throat, takes a breath to speak, and suddenly a woman’s scream slices through the air. A few moments later, another scream rises, then another. Beyond them, a sudden surge of strange new voices rises—high-pitched, tittering shrieks that sound not quite human. The crowd parts and something low to the ground races by, giggling with disturbing glee as the stray dog gives a pained yelp and then collapses with a gurgle, its throat cut open from ear to ear. As blood pools around its head, the raucous sound of a strange song begins, chanted from shrill, scratchy voices.

Spot checks.

Those who make a DC 12 check see that the shape that raced by and killed the dog now hides at the edge of the wagon—a single goblin, licking the blood from its dogslicer as it looks excitedly at the crowd, seeking out a new target. Characters who make the check may act in the surprise round.

The song is a nameless goblin rhyme, performed by several goblin warchanters and intended to give the goblins a boost of bardic music to spur them on.

Re: Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

Monk now has a greater geographical understanding of the surrounding lands.  He has definitely been enjoying the pleasant company, a nice change of pace from the more quiet moments of his travels.  Of course, so much for quiet moments.

Let's see.  Screaming civilians, crazed chanting, a dead dog.  Yeah, Monk draws his staff.  "I have the unpleasant feeling this festival isn't going to be a reminder of only one tragedy, now.">

Timothius looks around nervously. "We need to find the enemy fast before someone gets killed."

Raichel flicks an ear and looks in a direction. "I see it!" she yells before charging in the direction of the culprit. Her staff swing goes right over the goblin's head as it cackles at her.

Initiatives please. :)

Raichel and Timothius perc checks
14, 9
Raichel and Timothius initiatives
15, 8

Raichel surprise round attack: Charge! Crit fail.

You wouldn't think DC 12 would be all that hard. But only Raichel got it and even then, only because of a +9 to perc. XD

New House Rule: Whenever Roll20 seems to get "stuck" on a number, a reroll may be called for. The lack of randomness makes all those chain failures seem more like a Murphy drunkenly bragging than the usual Murphy laws of the universe. Also, if a reroll is called for (whether it is the houserule reroll or a reroll you have from one of your characters powers/feats/features/etc), you can reroll it until it's a different number than the stuck one.

Even as she does this, a third goblin charges her, but she deflects his spear with her staff.

Re: Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

Monk likes Raichel getting stabbed even less than a doggy getting decapitated (Maybe the goblin was close to level?).  He moves up beside the goblins flanking the girl and brings his staff in a downward slam hard enough to dent the little goblin helmet and cause cranial damage.  Following up with a kick to their back.

Alas, Monk's lack of actual Monk training means he fell short of outright killing the Goblin in a single moment.

The goblins meep initially from Mittens and Monk's attacks, but seem to be blood-lusted as they cackle a mere second after their own flesh was burned. They gang up on Raichel again. Both of them slash at her with their swords. Being surrounded, Raichel manages only to dodge one, but gets slashed by the other.

"Oh no you don't!" Mittens shouts shoving her palm out to conjure a small arcane circle in front of it then stabbing her sword through!  Her sword appears right in front of the goblin's blade, parrying it just in the nick of time!
