Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

Sandpoint:
The town of Sandpoint is small town, measuring only about 750 feet East-to-West at it's widest point and about 1200 to 1350 feet North-to-South at it's longest point.

The Swallowtail Festival begins promptly, as scheduled, on the first day of autumn. The square before the church quickly becomes crowded as locals and travelers arrive, and several merchant tents featuring food, clothes, local crafts, and souvenirs are there to meet them.

The turnout for the opening speeches is quite respectable, and the four keynote speakers each deliver short but well-received welcomes to the festival. Mayor Deverin’s friendly attitude and excitement prove contagious as she welcomes visitors to town and jokes about how even Larz Rovanky, the local tanner (and notorious workaholic) managed to tear himself away from the tannery to attend, much to everyone’s but Larz’s amusement.

Sheriff Hemlock brings the crowd down a bit with his dour mood, his reminder to be safe around the evening’s bonfire, and his request for a moment of silence to remember those who lost their lives in the fire that claimed the town’s previous church five years ago.

Fortunately, Cyrdak Drokkus is more than up to the challenge of bringing the crowd’s mood back up with his rousing anecdotes as he delivers a not-completely-irreverent recap of the long process the town went through to finance and construct the new cathedral. He throws in a bit of self-promotion at the end, as is his wont, inviting everyone to stop by the Sandpoint Theater the following evening to check out his new production of “The Harpy’s Curse,” revealing that the lead role of Avisera the harpy queen will be played by none other than the famous Magnimarian diva Allishanda!

Finally, Father Zantus steps up give a short speech thanking everyone for coming before declaring the Swallowtail Festival underway.

Please introduce your characters. I'm actually having it that Mittens, Raichel and Timothius are all citizens of sandpoint for several reasons; 1) Convenience, 2) It seems a quaint enough town to start in as a "home town" for the trio of "loved and taught how to love" siblings, 3) This way people of Sandpoint won't be ooing and ahing over the trio and we can get on with the story sooner than later. The ooing and ahing can happen elsewhere. :) Last, but not least, 4) Mittens was preparing to set out for adventure anyway and the siblings were GOING to stay behind... but adventure is going to come to them and prove the younger twins are capable and should stay with Mitts.

Fun fact: Sandpoint is the exact same start location as Jade Regent. But Rise of the Runelords starts differently anyhow and happens *before* Jade does. By probably a factor of weeks or even months.

FYI on gold: gold value translates roughly the same from Pathfinder to 4e. So for purposes of things like "this should be enough to buy a TOWN", gold still works about the same. GEAR is the only thing that seems to be different in expense. With that in mind, cost to stay at an inn, get someone's services, etc, will all stay the same.

Re: Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

If this were a cutscene, then the mirrored 'Welcome to Sandpoint' sign would have been a great prop give the audience their first look at both the location, and Monk.

As this is text based, you will instead have to take our word for it that he is a short haired 'Aren't you a little short to be Captain America?'.  It's somewhat more difficult to look imposing when five foot five doesn't even bring your brown eyes level with some of the native nomads, but that was okay with Monk.

When you have a rather aimless travel route, going along with others towards an apparently nice town having a 'hey our church isn't burnt down anymore' festival.   Travel clothes and a travel worn staff (if one was generous enough to call it such) meant he didn't even stick out all that much compared to some.

Still, Monk has to wonder about this town, if the local sheriff has to remind the locals FIRE HOT, DO NOT GO IN FIRE.

Re: Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

Mittens enjoyed Cyrdak's anecdotes and applauded.  Now that the fest is officially started, she goes for some festive sweet treat and offers to share with her sibs.

"Nice little going-away party this'll make," she says with a grin, "I might even miss this place."

Timothius says, "Might? It's home..." he mews.

Raichel says, "The late unpleasantness has most of the people who live here not too happy about Sandpoint."

Timothius frowns. "Yeah, but you and I still live here, Raichel."

Raichel raises a finger. "Nownow.. You can miss people and still not miss the place they live, Timothius."

Timothius mutters, "People are what make a place..."

Raichel says, "Well speaking of locations, where should we go first?"

Timothius says, "Why not just browse the kiosks here at the square first, and then if we ever wanna take a break, we could give Risa's a visit."

Raichel says, "She might actually have a kiosk here... There sure are a lot of visitors today."

Of course, while the citizens of Sandpoint don't stare at the kitty trio, visitors certainly do. One visitor apparently can NOT hold his liquor and has gotten drunk already. He spots Monk and aims to bump into the guy on purpose.

Re: Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

Monk sighs (Once. snort not included).  Sidestepping the obvious drunk is what would sound like the best option, but then the guy would probably just trip and land face first through a display table leading into a Rube Goldberg induced riot.

Sadly, we're narrating from experience there.

So instead, Monk simply stops and waits for the slightly less impactful inevitable.

Re: Rise of the Runelords: 1) Burnt Offerings

While Monk is clearly not a dwarf, (needs more beard), Mittens can't help but be amused with the comical futility of the drunk's plan given his target's Captain America build.  She can think of several pranks to pull on the inebriated moron to save him from his collision with destiny, she can't help but be overwhelmingly curious about the outcome if she doesn't interfere.  So instead she reaches to arm-around both her sibs in order to turn them in the direction of the impending amusement, but at least spends a moment to answer Timothius' objection.

"What Raichel said.  How do you expect me to help stop villains from burning down my home town's new church if I don't go out into the world to gain experience in stopping villains?  I've learned all I can learn from training.  It's time to put what I've learned into practice!"
