Coppernight Hold (Emerald and Flarewing)

It had been a long, hot day. But the day is cooling as it turns into evening, the sun having just set so the sky was quickly darkening.

The little fox bard Emerald had recently befriended some capable adventurers in hopes of setting out and finding out what happened to the local dwarven hold.

Currently, Emerald is leaning back in her chair, feet up on the table and fanning herself. She is in halfling form (The girl can shapeshift) for maximum air intake on her skin. Thunder can be heard in the distance and Emerald pauses. "....Is it gonna rain too?"

  "One could hope, Emerald."

Re: Coppernight Hold (Emerald and Flarewing)

Mittens, and the little devil and little cherub versions of herself on her shoulders, Imp and Cherub by name, are enjoying the dropping temperature.

"'It was a dark and stormy night...'" Imp begins to narrate, "Purrrfect for adventure!  Let's go!"

"Um... I think our friend would rather stay indoors during a storm," Cherub offers.

Big Mits finishes a bite.  "Evil never rests!  And doesn't take shelter in the rain either.  It just wallows in discomfort just to make life that much more challenging for the goodguys who set out to catch them.  So... likely we won't have a choice but to go out and get wet in the dark in order to save the day."

Re: Coppernight Hold (Emerald and Flarewing)

"Rain?  I hope not..  My plummage isn't made for doing well when wet."  She takes a gulp of totally-not-booze-juice and hehs softly, "Which is fine for when I've got all day or night to dry off.  But against surprise.. well surprises, not so much."

She hmms a bit at the Imp, Cherub, and Mitts before looking to the foxy-fox.  "So tell me more about this hold, if you don't mind?"

Emerald looks up towards her allies and nods to them each as they make their comments. Then says, "If it *is* going to rain, I suggest we head out now and hopefully make it there in time to have some decent shelter from the rain."

She wags a map. "I know how to get there, so just follow me."

Emerald hurries out the door with the others and continues, "Coppernight Hold was a dwarven mining operation. But when things got quiet, the mayor of this town sent a couple militia guys. They should have reported back by now and have not. We are the second wave to scout what has happened. I suspect someone has taken the mine by force and isn't welcoming visitors."

Flare finishes chugging down her mug of juice and slams the cup down on the countertop with a satisfied sigh.  "Okay, okay.  Get there hopefully before the rain starts.  Sounds good to me."  She stands and stretches, the firebird adjusting her wings as she thinks about the situation. "Maybe the dwarves decided they wanted the operation all to themselves?  Though if that's the case the guards should've come back by now.."

Emerald says, "Bingo." and continues on with the team. She looks up towards Cherub and says, "Thanks, by the way." before shape-shifting back into a fox.

Emerald is sure to make light conversation. She has nothing but positive things to say about her new friends, although she doesn't exactly lay the compliments too thick. It is clear she is friendly, but not a butt-kisser. Nice, but not obviously buttering people up.

Upon arriving at the fenced area, Emerald says, "Judging from the sounds... and silhouettes... I think the people on the other side of that fence are around my size."

Re: Coppernight Hold (Emerald and Flarewing)

Emerald doesn't seem offended at Checkin's statement, but rather corrects him. "You are mistaken. Dwarves are my height like Goliaths are your height, Checkin. A dwarf has anywhere from 1.5 to 2 feet on me. And at my height, that's 33% to 66% my entire height taller than me."

She nods in agreement to Flarewing. "Let's try."

Upon seeing the adventurers, all attempts at diplomacy fail. Combat begins.

A kobold charges Checkin while another hops over the fence and charges Emerald. While he does manage to injure the fox, Emerald shows her complete lack of concern for the not-danger these guys pose as she heads off northwest, provoking attacks that miss her.

More kobolds gang up on Checkin and only hit armor or chitin.

Emerald sings about how her team rules and the kobolds' team drools. This seems to make one kobold look real upset like he is in pain.

Chekin might be outnumbered, but he is not outARMED (we are so sorry) as he spears one kobodl through the skull with his weapon, and punches out two more with his smaller secondary arms.  He totally didn't miss the fourth one, his shield just meant he only had three limbs to spare, yes, that's it...

"Is this where we demand surrender and they refuse until only one is barely alive?"  This said as he expects the others to be able to handle one lone (minion) Kobold as he walks over to one of the slingers.

Re: Coppernight Hold (Emerald and Flarewing)

Emerald says, "Perhaps... but he surrendered when Checkin asked it of him. If word got out we slaughtered enemies who surrendered, our reputation would prevent future surrender. Worse, word would get out we can't be trusted since Checkin's offer of surrender suggests survival. I'm in favor of tying him up and at the very least, getting info on the rest of the hold so we know what we're dealing with. If his information endangers us some way, we kill him. If not, he goes back to the village with us and has a chance to do life community service; making himself useful to good rather than a waste." She eyes the kobold, "But alive."

Emerald looks at Flarewing. "Don't get me wrong, Flarewing. You are right that we would be justified in killing him. But reputation is more valuable than a dragon's horde. And sparing those who surrender to us would be a step in the right direction for earning the reputation we will need in the future."

She then looks at Cherub. "Thanks for tying him up, dear."

Then looks at the others. "Can we all agree to keeping him alive until we're done here to see if his information was valuable?"

Re: Coppernight Hold (Emerald and Flarewing)

Flarewing sighs and rolls her eyes, "Fine, if you say so."  Personally she isn't as concerned about reputation as the others.  If you're good at killing the badguys while keeping the good people safe and sound, then that's all the rep you need, right?

Still she walks over to the kobold in question, her expression that of uncaring indifference.  She leans down nice and close to whisper into the kobold's ear, "You see that?  If it were up to me, you'd be reduced to ash and scattered to the winds right now.  But THEY want to spare you, to show you mercy.  You had better cherish their generosity and kindness.  And if you so much as try to backstab them, try to lie or harm them in any way, I will see to it personally that you are burned, slowly until there is nothing left but bone and dust, making sure that through your firey torment you beg and plead for a swift demise that will never come.  Understand?"

The firebird stands up and smiles, sweetly, at the kobold before joining the others, confident that her message was sent to the kobold's head.

Re: Coppernight Hold (Emerald and Flarewing)

Emerald is glad to have a generally agreeable team.

The kobold has white scales, sure. But if he didn't have them, he would have turned white. He is scared stiff of Flarewing and keeps his eyes away from her.

Emerald asks, "What can we expect in the rooms ahead?"

The kobold begins sputtering gibberish at first, but Emerald says, "Shhhh... You spoke common when you surrendered. Can you speak common when you answer me, please?"

The kobold gulps and says, "Yesyes! Common for the nice, merciful common-speakers! OK: What to expect! That pit leads down to..." he proceeds to describe the room ahead. And then the room after that. The kobold gives details such as the statue having been made unstable on purpose so it can be pushed onto invaders. He informs the group that last he checked, there were still 3 living dwarf prisoners. He can't think of an exact number of kobolds, but estimates there are as many below the pit as there were up here above the pit. "But wyrmpriest is dangerous! He casts magic like you! He guarding the very next room. Dragon most dangerous; she can breath ice to such a distance and width that you no escape unless you hide around corner from it! And when you see kobold with two short swords, one in each hand, beware! Do not let them surround you with anyone else or they will hurt you more!"

Emerald raises an eyebrow. "...that is a lot of information. And all absolutely truthful. If he's lying, he's the best liar I've ever met."

"This fight was genuinely harder; Checkin, Mittens and I all got hurt. Let's rest and prepare for a tougher fight."

"That does seem to be the pattern, yes."

"What, we win?"

"Well that.  And it gets harder till you get to the end of a dungeon."

"It's a copper mine.  And it wasn't on purpose!  I just zigged when I shoulda zagged."

"Yesyes."

Rhagar does suppose 'slightly harder' is still harder.

"While the priest's own attack was not much to consider, I expect an actual dragon no matter how small will have a more dangerous variety...  Though Flarewing seems to have us covered on that end."

Flarewing totally gives Checkin a thumbs-up at that comment.  "Heh if any of you want well done dreagon steaks later, just let me know and I'll cook them up for you!'  she grins widely and stretches, "BUt yeah, makes sense.  Nothing wrong with a bit of a rest.  The dwarves probally around going anywhere..."  She says as she looks around, half expecting said dwarves to emerge victorious over their captors, just to see the heroes resting and assume the heroes were lazy good-for-nothings.

Emerald is unsure about eating another sentient life. "I'll keep that in mind, thanks."

She sings during the rest, causing everyone to feel pleasant. Then once the rest is over, Emerald leads the way to the double-doors.

"Dragons are people," Cherub says, "People shouldn't eat people."

"But cooking them is totally ok," Imp interjects.

"The thought of sizzling steaks is making my mouth water," Mits says, taking a small bite from her rations, "But don't fight on a full stomach or something."

She listens at the door.

"I hear a kinda cute growling voice barking commands.  Sounds like this: 'Grrawrgo kargle mo slithern!  Okla gooka!'  Doesn't sound kobold.  Might be our dragon."

Chekin finds the luxury of being picky about who and what you eat in these lands a novelty.

"Somehow, I suspect people are less choosey when it comes to using parts of a dead dragon in their arcane workings than they are eating them."  Well DUH, you aren't going to make a +7 Dragonblood greatsword if you eat the spell components.

"Just a reminder that I'm fireproof," Cherub says, flying into the room to hover over the kobold's heads.

"You should know by now that the rest of your forces couldn't stop us.  You should consider parlay."

Mits fires a big, heavy-looking arrow at one of the kobolds, but misses.  When it hits the far wall it bounces wildly.  Mits slouches, looking very disappointed.

As a conjuration, Cherub cannot be targeted by area powers and is immune to them.  Can only be damaged by ranged or melee powers.  Any enemy adjacent to her that moves without shifting is subject to an immediate attack.

Flarewing doesn't like the fact that all the kobolds are trying to stab her bug-friend.  That's just plain rude!  She flappity-flaps and makes her way around the rude kobolds.  "Hey lizard lips!  Over here!"   Once shouted, she takes in a deep breath and lets out a stream of firey flames at the kobolds.  Certainly at least one of them is going to be deep fried by this, right?

A kobold comes up and swings at Flarewing, who dodges easily.

Emerald sings, "I'm sorry for your blunder, it really makes me wonder, how you get along..."

The slyblade trips and stumbles over into Checkin's weapon, almost getting dead.

Another kobold runs over to Flare and stabs at her. Another easy dodge for the phoenix.

A kobold charges up to Flare, hops to her side and gets slashed by Flarewing for getting into position. But he stabs her in return, both blades running through Flarewing's side! But since he stays where he is, light explodes and harms him more!

The dragon comes into view and breathes ice on everyone! Only Mittens and one of the kobolds gets hit, but it hurts Mittens a lot and kills the kobold! "Fools! You dare disturb the chamber of a DRAGON?!"

Right after that, a kobold rushes in, charges Checkin, and then backs up. Another kobold goes to charge Checkin and Cherub hacks him down for it!

Mits' teeth are too busy chattering for her to give a whitty come-back.  But she at least manages to down one of her two intended targets with her shaky hand.  Imp flutters over Chekin's head, trying to find a way to be helpful.

Cherub blink-blinks at the dragon and gets a helpless look in her eyes.  "W...  Aaaawww?!  It's so cuuute!"

She takes that annoying tone adults do when talking to a puppy.  "Who's a cute dragon?!  You are!  Let's be friends!"

Another kobold hops up to Emerald and slashes at her before hopping back to where he was.

Re: Coppernight Hold (Emerald and Flarewing)

Chekin steps over to the tiny horde of lizards around Flarewing.  The weakling gets a karate chop to the neck, the healthy one gets a backhand across the face, and the kobold who had the nerve to impale Flarewing gets-

"AAAAAAAAAAAAA"  His face ripped right off.

AAAAghgggrkffrk! and said face shoved down their screaming throat, choking to death on his own face.

Hmm, maybe Chekin likes Flarewing?  Or maybe he's just a violent bug maniac.  Either way, he follows up on all this by reaching across the room with his malformed lower arm (FIVE FINGERS!?), dragging the baby dragon over by the throat so it is easier to stab them with his tratnyr.  It is probably not a smart idea to hold a breath recharged dragon at point blank range, but totally worth it.

The dragon responds, "FOOL!" and spews ice at Checkin, Emerald and Flarewing! While flarewing manages to dodge, Checkin and Emerald are hurt badly!

Then a kobold dances about Checking, flanking him with the dragon. And manages to hit only Checkin's chitinous armor. But the near-dead kobold pops from around the corner and stabs Checkin with a flesh wound. But hey... as hurt as Checkin is, every HP counts. XD

Flarewing noted she would have to deal with the dragon, and so she shall!  Besides, she can't let the buggy have all the fun, or worse take the brunt of a ticked off dragon temper tantrum.   She manuvers herself close to the dragon and flares out her plumage into a firey aura and blasts it at the dragon like some kind of kaelidescope of firey laserness and wastes no time in following through with stabbing the dragon with more fire, just to be safe.

She swings feebly at the kobold behind Checkin, but can't seem to find purchase in his armor.

So she sings to Checkin, "Be well, my friend, be well... and overcome this taste of hell... I give you of myself... before I rest a spell..."

Checkin's wounds close!

Chekin takes advantage of his health improvement to make a health notprovement (that's a real word, totally) to the near dead kobold.  Driving his tratnyr through it's skull until it's halfway down the shaft.

The bad news is this bit of overkill makes it a little too awkward to draw it out and hit the still standing enemy as well.
