Chatper 2, Phase 2 - Decisions and Departures

19th of Ascending Water, RY 768
Early Morning

The day of the Cobalt Alliance's departure dawns clear and promising. Now the members of the Alliance convene on the deck of the Spring Dryad II, still docked at Seahaven harbor beside the Hammerhead and the Marlena. Tageru has completed his training, and he joins Zeru, Treon, Lasuri and Jadira aboard the flagship vessel.

Among all the chores Jadira accomplished, she and Lasuri also took the time to search for a crafter to replace the departed Platinum Dove. As Amonth seems to have decided to strike out on his own, they find another candidate in Isole Kareth, a pale and dark-haired man who exudes a strange aura of grim melancholy. Nonetheless, he is quiet and polite enough, and proves to be more than sufficient at his craft for the Alliance's purposes.

This is Kareth's first time meeting the crew and officers he will soon be working with. It's also an opportunity to see the Spring Dryad up close, but unlike the others present, it isn't the first time he's ever seen a vessel of that make. [Private to Isole Kareth: The Seventh Legion had several such vessels in their fleet, and you have memories of working with them during your training as a magitech engineer. Oddly, you find the Dryad in particular quite familiar. Looking at the ship's paddlewheels, you see almost immediately that they are damaged. You remember having worked on a vessel similar to this one back in the Lookshy hangars.] If Kiana or Darel choose to stay on with the Alliance, they too will join the others on board. Neither of them have seen Xander for some time, and wonder whether he has found another ship to seek his fortune with.

The next course of action appears to be -- to decide on a next course of action. They may proceed to An-Teng as previously planned, amidst reports of heightened and more aggressive Lintha activity. They could head further westward, following the news of a Dynastic savant disappearing beneath the waves in search of a great treasure. They could sail toward the spirit court of Fakharu to meet with the Emissaries of Perfect Water, with Darel along as their guide. Or switch plans and head further North, towards the Neck and Coral and the sinister presence of Skullstone.

OOC: Though I'm giving you a choice here, there will also be more immediate events, as I've found just giving people random stuff to decide on doesn't lead to much progress. For now, just post and discuss amongst each other.

You could consider any or all of the above goals, though, even split up to accomplish them.

[Private to Xander Lucian, Peleps Zeru: OK, since Xander were absent for a while, we can either assume he managed to speak with Zeru later on and get passage on the Marlena (if Zeru doesn't mind). Otherwise Xander could have stowed away on the Dryad or approached the Cobalt Alliance directly, hoping to make himself useful with the artifact he recently won. Let me know what you decide.]

Re: Chatper 2, Phase 2 - Decisions and Departures

Kareth eyes the Drayad in his cool manner.  When these two had approached him, he had been quietly earning a living, trying to figure out how he would complete either of his two self-apointed tasks.  However, both the prospect of chasing a savant or traveling to Skullstone seemed to be good starting points.  As he examins the ship, he takes not of the obvious damage to it.  He felt that he should have no problems fixing the broken paddle wheel.  "I would much prefer to either head towards Skullstone or to look for this savant and this treasure you mentioned,"  Kareth said in his deep voice.  He then turned to the Captain and asked, "However, I assume before we go anywhere, I'll need to set about some basic repairs?"

Re: Chatper 2, Phase 2 - Decisions and Departures

"Thanks again for bringing your expertise to us - that's really appreciated." Lasuri responds, also turning towards the Dryad with a contemplative eye. "She's been in better shape before, that's for sure. But then, she's been doing nothing but running since she's been freed, so that's not too surprising." He turns back towards Kareth, and smiles once more.

"That's something we've been wanting to work on for a while. We've just found a workshop for that purpose, if you're interested in checking it. Although we'll have to see whether or not the timing's right to make another stop - some of the rumors we might choose to chases seem rather time-sensitive. Basic repairs are at your discretion, of course - just let me know what you'll need and I'll try to arrange for you to get it."

"As for destination... We'll see what the other captains have to say, but I'm inclined to think like you, myself. Original idea was to sail through to An-Teng, but well... Life on the sea's pretty unpredictable, and a lot of times you have to adapt your plans to the coming tides. So looking for the savant or heading north's what I'm thinking about, myself."

Darel, closely followed by his neomah (shape-shifted into an ordinary, if attractive, woman) and their luggage carrier, stood before the gangplank. "Permission to come aboard, captain?" he hailed Leomaris.

"Well... the repairs are a little worse than just basic, actually," Jadira says almost apologetically. "At least... if you're talking about the paddlewheels. To be honest, they've not worked at all since --" She pauses suddenly, giving Kareth a bit of a wary glance, then amends, "Well, since we acquired the ship."

"Our last crafter informed us we would actually need the aid of a workshop as well as extra material to bring them back to working order. Now we have a crafter, and the workshop is a couple days sailing from here--but we've no material. The closest equivalent we could find in the West would probably be black jade, or one of the exotic materials of the far West."

"The Black Rock Chasm... where that savant, Megara disappeared... is likely a black jade vein. That'd mean more underwater spelunking though," the armswoman says warningly, knowing not everyone was fond of that.

Jadira pauses when Darel shows up, smiling down at him and the female companion whom she'd not yet met, and raises an hand in greeting. She hopes Kiana would show up as well.

Kareth nods slightly.  "Workshops are always helpful.  Tools aren't an absolute necessity seeing as I have a viable alternative," he says as he raises his arm from under his black cloak.  It becomes plainly visible to all that he has some sort of metal contraption grafted into his forearms.  As the cloak fell back, a very small essence cannon, in a holster on his hip came into view as well.  This essence cannon had a hearthstone sitting in a setting on the stock.  "I'll go examine the paddles closer and see if anything is pressing.  I'll give a list of materials which will be needed to preform the repairs after that," Kareth finished in his deep, almost remorse voice.

Treon nodded his greeting to Kareth.  "Treon Fireblade," he said by way of introduction to the other fire aspect, taking note of his strange arms and the weapon. A nice piece, even if I don't much hold with guns, he thought.

"Darel," he said, as the man came aboard.  "I must apologise for missing your meal a week ago," he said with nod.

"I would like to investigate these rumours of more aggressive Lintha activity, although that is not a task for one ship," he said, acknowledging that he would need the co-operation of all.  The news of the Dynast who had vanished concerned him too. That could so easily be Keiko ...  "If people do not wish to do that, and it could all be over by the time we get there, then I would prefer to investigate after the Dynastic expedition."

Re: Chatper 2, Phase 2 - Decisions and Departures

Tageru climbs aboard the Dryad and nods to his crewmates as a greeting. He looks at the new folk around and then turns to the captain and takes him to the side to have a private talk with him.

"Captain Leomaris, I don't mean to be rude or anything, but who are these new people on board? I've been away for a week and I didn't realize there would be people joining us. They aren't Buruku's men, are they?"

He looks at the newcomers with a bit of suspicion. "If they are causing any trouble, you know you can count on my support in defending our freedoms, right?"

He looks at the Water Aspect with what seems to be anger in his eyes and a deep frown. But, then again, the only times he doesn't look like that is when he's asleep, so it might not mean a lot. The Wood aspect looks at the man with the essence-cannon again, as if sizing him up before a fight, but then turns away, so as not to be rude.

"Also, if we're going to An-Teng, we'll need to stock up on supplies, since there are no islands between the southernmost island of Wavecrest and the landmass of An-Teng for thousands of miles. I think I have a part of the solution." he says and takes a small wooden box out of his pocket. He opens it to reveal a small pearl-like stone, only almost completely transparent. "It's a Clearwater Pearl. It should be enough for emergency water supplies, in case we run out. With this, we can drink seawater safely."

He puts the box back into his pocket and then looks at the captain, waiting for the answer.

"Thank you, Tageru," Jadira interjects, letting Lasuri handle the questions directly addressed to him, as is appropriate. To the newcomers, she certainly does not seem surprised at Tageru's rather brusque attitude, speaking in calm and measured tones. "The pearl will help greatly. As for other supplies, I have taken care of that already. Do not worry, this is not the first time we have sailed toward An-Teng, we are familiar with the logistics involved."

Addressing the others as a whole, the first mate continues, "We can always prioritize what ought to be done. I think that investigating the rumor would be closest... other than that, we need a consensus as to whether we will go northward or southward next, since whichever direction we go will mean we will not head the other way for several weeks, maybe months."

Re: Chatper 2, Phase 2 - Decisions and Departures

Shaking his head at Tageru's interjection, Lasuri continued to smile, as if not really bothered by the monk's attitude - or at least seeing the truth behind it.

"Ah, no worries to be had, mister Tageru. They are new allies of the Alliance - and no, none of them are Buruku's men. Just travelers like us passing through Wavecrest. This is Mister Darel and Mister Kareth, who have chosen to lend a hand to our cause." He smiles, then turns away momentarily. He would not tell more about the new arrivals than they would feel comfortable saying about themselves, and so he lets them step up and introduce themselves further should they want to. "Thanks for your concern and loyalty, Mister Tageru. However, these people are now sailing under the Alliance flag, and are to be treated as such."

"And to all our new arrivals, this is Mister Tageru. He is a member of the Alliance and has been stationed on the Dryad for some time now. Over there is mister Zeru, captain of the Black Marlena, and Mister Treon, captain of the Hammerhead, the two other vessels sailing under the Alliance flag." He smiles once more, then gestures towards Darel. "Oh, you can come right in, mister Darel! This is likely going to be your home at least for a little while, so please don't feel held back. That goes for all the rest of you as well." he says, gesturing to Kareth.

Tageru bows to the captain slightly and then to the newcomers, as the captain introduces them. "As you say, Captain. If they are indeed our allies, then I shall try to make them feel as welcome as any other member. I know I might not be very good at it...", Tageru says and pauses for a moment, like he's feeling a bit unpleasant, "but I'll try.

As for our future paths, I cast my vote for An-Teng, and for more reasons than one. First of all, I don't feel comfortable going to a shadowland. I'm sure I don't need to explain why. Also, as a Wood aspect, I found it more uncomfortable than the others I went with the last time. Maybe it has something to do with the Dragon's blessing that's been given to me, but I don't know, and I'd rather not check. Of course, if you all decide we should head north, I'll follow, but my vote is clear.

Also, I have a...personal reason for wanting to travel to An-Teng. I understand it might be a bit selfish of me to ask such a thing for such reasons, but I assure you, it's the lesser of the two motives.

"Either options suits me," he said. Getting information on Skullstone was worth the risk, but there was the possibility of investigating the Lintha threat on the way to An-Teng...

Re: Chatper 2, Phase 2 - Decisions and Departures

Kareth cocks his head to one side and simply looks at the Wood Aspect.  It's a look which contains no emotion or any trace of his thoughts.  In truth his thoughts weren't much of anything, he was simply looking at the man.  After the Captain assured this... Tageru... that Kareth meant them no harm, Kareth states flatly to the crew, "Captain, I've said my piece and I'll obey my orders.  For now, I'm going to familiarize myself with the ship and what needs to be done.  This shouldn't take too long. I will be back momentarily by your leave."  The truth of the matter is that he is somewhat anxious to see the ship for another reason as well.  For some reason this ship seems to be familiar to Kareth.  He did not know if it was only because he had worked on a similar ship in Lookshy at some point or if it was for some other reason.  However, he wishs to find out.

With those words, Kareth turns and walks away to begin his investigation.  As a gust of wind cuts through the group, it catches his cloak and flourishs it for him imposingly.

[Private to GM: My character's just taking a few minutes make assessments on what repairs (other than the paddle wheel) will need to be done as well as what matterials will be needed and if some repairs will be within my ability to conduct without a workshop (since I can use my bracers to generate tools).  Do I need a roll for that?  I'm also looking for any reasons why this ship would be familiar other than having worked on one similar to it in Lookshy.]

Re: Chatper 2, Phase 2 - Decisions and Departures

"Hello, Kathleen," Jadira says readily, trusting for now that Darel has enough control over what her studies of such beings tell her is a minor demon. She'd have to discuss with Lasuri what his feelings were about that -- particularly after they've already extended their welcome.

"Seems we've got more votes for continuing with An-Teng, if I include you folks without preference. Heh, funny how our choice became 'undead or demons' more or less." Jadira scratches her head bemusedly. "I didn't necessarily think we would sail right into Skullstone, but sail up toward the region at least."

"Anyway, about yon lady Dynast in distress," the brunette continues, acknowledging once more the rumor of Black Rock Chasm, "how many of us are into that? We could send a small excursion that way, and a larger one toward the Lintha activity. And possibly meet back up in Sorrow's Veil when all is said and done. Just for you newcomer's info, Sorrow's Veil is our main base, it's in the island chain between Wavecrest and the Neck. I've a minor manse in An-Teng that's linked with it, so we'd have a way to communicate through that link."

Jadira's emerald eyes shift briefly to their new crafter who is already exhibiting great interest in the paddlewheels.

[Private to Isole Kareth: Perception+Craft(Magitech) to assess damages, and Perception+Investigation for recognizing the Dryad or anything important about it. The Investigation roll isn't a very high diff, just seeing whether your memory catches on or not.]

Re: Chatper 2, Phase 2 - Decisions and Departures

The others had been on board for some time before Kiana was finally seen walking toward the dock.  It had taken some careful thought, but she had finally came to the conclusion to not only join the Alliance (they had been so supportive at the dinner, after all) but to also sail with the 'Sea Drake'.  This was not an easy decision, as she had already pledged a good deal of her services to her own Captain, but given her unique position, no one really blamed her decision to join the new Alliance crew.  Jadira was, predictably, the biggest reason for that.  Unlike Kiana's mother, Jadira seemed kind and caring, and though Kiana was far beyond trusting her right away, or even caring about her, the hope that she could trust and care for Jadira was too tempting to ignore.

She passed along side the boat, easily the youngest of the Alliance crew to ascend the ramp.  She wore breeches again, as well as a white long sleeve shirt which fit her loosely.  A red cloak covered her and hid most of her face as she climbed aboard the great vessel.  As she stepped forward, however, she pulled the hood back to reveal her soft black hair and crystaline eyes.

"Kiana Makohgn, reporting for duty Captain."  She said softly, finding his eyes and bowing deeply.

Re: Chatper 2, Phase 2 - Decisions and Departures

OOC: Kareth's keen eye picks up several important details...

[Private to Isole Kareth: OK, long answers here.

First of all, the repairs. You realize the paddlewheels have been non-functional for many years. The damage to them and continued lack of use have rendered them all but useless. You DO think that you might be able to whip up some sort of jury-rigged temporary solution, particularly if you could convince Lasuri to delay the departure a few hours and relinquish some of his mortal crewmen to help clean up the neglected mechanisms. However, the quick-fix solution would only last half the usual running time (10 hours halved) of the wheels, and each time you have to reapply the temp. fix the difficulty to accomplish it goes up.

What you would need to fix the wheels completely: a quantity of raw black jade equal to Resources 4, or two 3-dot black jade Artifacts (of suitable size, so more like an armor or a large weapon), broken down to reclaim the magical material. Better material than that would also suffice, but jade is relatively easier to come by and work with. You would be able to accomplish the repairs with your bracers, but it would still go much faster and with less potential mishap in a workshop, of course.

Second, what you recognize about the Dryad: You are pretty certain its make matches a warship in disrepair that went missing about 8 years ago from the hangars of Lookshy. The name you remember it bearing is the Undying Allegiance.

Kareth reapproached the group and took note of the attractive new arrival.  He then turned to the captain and first mate and said, "Captain Leomaris, Lady Jadira.  I've finished my assessment of the repairs that need to be done to the paddlewheels.  Quite frankly, they appear to in a somewhat pathetic state of affairs.  I could fix them if I could find two sizable jade artifacts, roughly the size of a grand diaklave or reinforced breastplate, to break down.  In terms of raw jade, that's going to be roughly enough to buy a smaller, mundane ship.  I could convince you to loan me a few members of the crew I might be able to apply a temporary fix to it.  However, you would be lucky to get 5 hr. running time from the wheels before they broke again and repairing them after they break again will be harder.  I would ask you to make my job easier and not use them unless you need to.  If we can wait a few hours to depart and you can spare the men, I'll be more than happy to set about the repair work."

She said thankfully.  "But we are about to leave port, arn't we?  Is there anything I can do to help?  I may not look like much, but I can be handy if given direction."  That is, despite being on the sea for a good bit of time, she still wasn't much of a sailor.  Not so surprising, given that her very aspect was against her in that regard, but like all those that were bonded with the earth, she was stubborn, and once she set her mind to something, it was bound to get done.

And I hear you about not using the wheels - we've gotten around using them until now, so if you think we shouldn't use them, we won't." He smiles, then nods towards the man. "Ideally, you'd have your own team you could direct with repairs and damage assessment and the like. We'll build up to that when we get more recruits."

With another nod, he then turns towards Kiana, making certain to acknowledge her arrival with a warm smile. "Pleasure to have you on board, Miss Kiana. And I'm sure your help's going to be invaluable. Once we've decided on our destination, I'll make sure to give you a position on the ship. And speaking of that, as a member of the Alliance, you also have a say in where your destination's going to be. That's part of the charter - a fair share of the loot and a voice in important decisions for all members sailing under the Cobalt flag." He rubs his chin slightly, then listens on to Treon's comment carefully.

"That'd certainly be one way to do it. I'd see no objections, myself. Would that sit well with everyone else? And the next point would be, who'd follow Mister Treon, and who'll come to An-Teng? Anybody's got preferences?"

"No objections here, Captain," replies Jadira readily. She prefers not to dwell much more on the decision-making; as much as she understands Lasuri's desire to give everyone a choice, some people are just eternally indecisive, or have no preference whatsoever.

"I remain with the Dryad, of course. As will Kiana and... I assume Kareth," she nods, as after all she and Lasuri had hired him to help with the Dryad's upkeep. "I would suggest Tageru join the Hammerhead, though he's already gotten quite cozy with his quarters here. Bit of a shame... it'd be useful to have an essence user man that Implosion Bow."

Then her green eyes focus on Darel again. "What of you, would you be willing to serve as the sorcerer for the Hammerhead, at least for now? Treon is a captain you can depend on, that is for certain; he runs a tight ship."

I'd rather stay on the Dryad, if that's fine with others. I don't mind sharing quarters, but I've become quite used to mine. And, if I understand mr. Treon, he doesn't plan on going to An-Teng at all, but rather investigate here and then communicate through the manses? I don't want to stay here if anyone's going to the province.

Also, since we're mentioning it, I'd suggest not splitting up. While there is a point to mr. Treon's statement about outrunning possible attackers, I prefer the safety the numbers give.
"

Tageru bows to everyone after giving his two bits of wisdom and adds "I don't mean any disrespect to anyone, but I don't think that it's proper that my quarters should be simply given away to someone without my consent, and especially not someone who just joined the crew. There is plenty of room on other ships we have, so there is no need for any change in our current living accommodations""

Re: Chatper 2, Phase 2 - Decisions and Departures

As soon as he has permission from Captain Leomaris to begin, Kareth turns to a crewman and hails him over.  He instructs the crewman to collect 5 men from the crew who were the best at dealing with machines and to have them meet him near the paddlewheels.  The young sailor obviously is uncomfortable standing in front of Kareth and eagerly leaves to go about his job as it means he does not need to be near the eerie Dragon-Blood.

Kareth then addresses Theron in his somewhat morose tone, "My job is to tend to the magitech here so I cannot sail with you, Captain.  However, I do wish to ask you a small favor if you intend to help this treasure hunter who has vanished.  My mother was the lone survivor to return from an expedition mounted by Lookshy in search of some sort of treasure here in the West.  The expedition failed and it was never discovered why.  If you decide to go on this expedition, then I would be interested knowing if you discover anything which might relate to that expedition.  I ask this of you now, because I don't know if you'll set sail before I finish my repairs."

After that, he turned to Captain Leomaris again and said "Over all, this is really quite a remarkable ship.  I haven't seen the make of it in about 8 years.  It will be nice to work on a fine piece of technology again."  This last comment is said with a smile, a smile which did nothing to make the man less disturbing.

"Thank you, Darel," Jadira says with a smile (apparently the more social face between herself and Lasuri) then shakes her head at Tageru. "I would not have reallocated your quarters. Only asked that you accompany Treon for a time. It is less of an uprooting, more of a... distributing men where they are needed."

"By no means did I wish to take anything from you without your consent." Her bow is slightly clipped but still polite. She wonders idly to herself whether the presence of both Tageru and Kareth would be disconcerting to the crew.

"It would be my pleasure to accept you aboard, then," he nodded, gratified to the newcomer to the Alliance.  He then turned his attention to Tageru.

"Whilst I certainly intend to help this expedition, or at least find out what has happened to it," he said to reply to the Wood Aspect, "Once I have done what I can for them, I will certainly be bear South once again, unless of course the Dryad too has changed her destination.  Your presence would be a welcome one on the Implosion Now, but I can understand you wanting to remain on the Dryad," he said, his voice respectful.  The presence of the dour-faced Immaculate aboard the Hammerhead was something that had inspired mixed feeling anyway.

He remained silent on the subject of cabins.  He certainly hadn't interpreted the Lady Thornbloom's comments in the way that Tageru appeared to, but she seemed quite capable of fighting her own battles.

He nodded gravely to Kareth.  "Of course I will enquire," he nodded.  "How long ago was this failed expedition, and where precisely was it headed?," he enquired.

"Since I have little knowledge of our choices, I will add my vote to whatever Jadira has voiced."  She said softly.  Favoritism?  The ladies had to stick together, after all.  However, Kiana's trained eyes spotted Tageru--or, more importantly, the robes he wore.

Looking at Jadira for a moment before departing her side, Kiana approached the physically impressive man and looked up at him, her eyes unwavering as she bowed, her hands waving lightly in a traditional Earth-Dragon Style sign of respect.  With her head still bowed, she spoke:  "It is a pleasure to meet you, sir.  Please do not be offended, but might I ask at what temple you studied?"

"The General Staff decided it would be best if the details were left undisclosed so I don't know exactly where it's destination was.  As to the time frame, I was born just after my mother returned home.  I understand that they had left some 5 years prior to that.  So that give us a time from from 29 to 34 years ago.  Thank you for your assistance in this matter.  Good luck with your endeavors."  With that, Kareth stalked away, going to meet the group of men gathering at the paddlewheels.

As he approached his new assistants Kareth began making preparations to begin the repairs.  He immediately issued orders to bring the materials he thought would be necessary:  wire, oil, cloth, scrap metal, and adhesive to name but a few.  As soon as the materials were gathered he push his essence into his bracers and began his work.  He relied on his men to hold pieces in place, to clean and scrape tarnished parts, and other small chores... but by and large he relied on his training.

[Private to GM: Okay, I'm making my repair roll(s).  I collected my men .  I'm going to buy 3 sux with my craft excellency.   Combined with the 3 sux I get from my bracers, that's 6 extra sux to the roll.

Isole Kareth rolled 8 successes using 8d10 with the White Wolf Exalted system with a target of 7 with rolls of 9,4,3,8,10,10,8,7. Int + Craft(magitech):  Temp ship repair.

14 sux total (unless I used the wrong roll).

"I trained and went to school at the Cloister of Wisdom. I spent four years training at the Palace Sublime itself, under the watchful gaze of the Mouth of Peace and the greatest of sifus." Tageru answers, with only a touch of pride in his voice. It was almost as if he was talking about the weather. Almost, but not quite.

"I've learned a lot on my travels too, though. As my teacher, Mnemon Gett once said: you haven't learned a technique or how to properly use a Charm until you've tried it on a real opponent, in a life-or-death battle. He was right.

And you?
", Tageru raises one of his green brows questioningly. "Are you an ex-monk too? Many of those not born in the Realm take the razor. Is that your story? Although, you seem to be too young to have been a monk for long enough to shave your head and to grow your hair back."

Re: Chatper 2, Phase 2 - Decisions and Departures

Amidst the excitement of new arrivals and the beginning of Kareth's repairs, black-haired Tethia emerges from below deck. She is wearing her old black jade breastplate, and shoulders the bow once taken from her--perhaps the result of some agreement made in private? She also shoulders a heavy bag, likely carrying her belongings.

She walks straight up to Lasuri, ignoring most everyone else there in her usual direct manner. "Captain Leomaris, request permission to transfer back to the Hammerhead," she states, her aquamarine eyes meeting his calmly.

As for the engineer's progress, the repairs are going remarkably well. Lasuri and Jadira can feel secure that they have indeed hired on a crafter of peerless skill. In fact, Kareth is pretty sure that with his excellent success, the paddlewheels will run at full capacity for up to ten hours before requiring further attention rather than the expected five -- possibly even degrade more slowly.

Of course, as elegant as his temporary solution is, nothing will replace real repairs. But the boost of speed may be necessary, particularly if being pursued by persistent Lintha pirates!

OOC: Kareth has to work about 5 hours, so in the meantime others can finish off whatever needs to be said.

Seeing that Kiana is busy conversing with Tageru, Jadira discreetly catches Treon and Darel's gazes and joins them briefly. "Excuse me, gentlemen, I do have one more issue to bring up with the both of you, since it seems we will not be seeing each other for some time."

She continues more quietly once they are apart from the others. "Two issues, actually. First that of communication between our ships, and second... concerning Hobnail's condition." The brunette looks to Treon in particular when she says that.

"But first things first. Darel, do you happen to know sorcery or other methods to carry messages across long distances?"

Kiana shook her head, that obvious black hair flowing in front of her face as she did.

"Not exactly, no.  My father was...an exile from the Immaculate Order.  When I was of age, he passed his legacy on to me.  Though I've never stepped foot inside a temple proper, my father wove such intricate tales that feel as if I have traveled the world with him, at times.  He taught me much, including many traditions--which is how I recognized your robes, good ex-monk."  She said.

It was obvious by sheer appearances that he was of the Wood, but it was only polite to ask:  "What style did you embrace?"  She asks kindly, smiling a little more now that there is yet someone else on board that she might well have a few things in common with.  Then, after he answered:  "I would very much like to spar with you, Mr. Tageru, when we are a little less busy...if it would please you."  She finished, bowing again as was customary when requesting such things.  Was it folly for her to assume he was a higher rank than her from the outset?  She sold herself short, of course, but the Earth Dragons were know for being humble at times.

"It's as Treon suggests, Darel." Jadira confirms. "I can't send messages through the wind, but I've recently studied and acquired a spell that will achieve similar results, without the need for position. I can send messages your way when I know that we are resting or at a regular course, so you will be able to reply with accuracy."

That said, she addresses Treon's concern, not excluding Darel from this topic either. After all, the Air Aspect will be giving Treon counsel on occult matters from now on, at least while he remains aboard the Hammerhead. "Oh, yes, about Hobnail. Darel, you will be meeting the crew of the Hammerhead very soon, and Hobnail is one among them. Captain Treon has asked me to conduct some research about this crewman's condition, as he has suffered from insomnia and anxiety for an extended period of time."

"I made my research over the week and I've confirmed a couple of things. First of all, don't take my first suggestion about the ghost flower tea. That would as likely kill him as help him. Second, I am certain now that Hobnail is haunted by some form of ghost -- but to understand their connection you must have Hobnail's cooperation. You'll need to coax him to tell you what he can about the identity of this entity and what hold he or she has on him."

"Unfortunately, I don't know I'll have the opportunity to aid in the exorcism before we depart. Really sorry for not bringing this news to you sooner," the brunette apologizes sincerely, shaking her head at her ill-timed omission. "Darel, if you think you're up to assisting when the time comes, I can explain it to you instead... otherwise you may wish to leave Hobnail with us, or wait."

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 2 - Decisions and Departures

Folding his arms across his chest, Lasuri leans back against the railing, and listens to the various talks exchanged around him. If one was to take a guess, one could say the Sea Drake looks... almost pleased. And one would not be far from the truth, either. There is a certain sense of appreciation that wells up in him when he listens to the men and women of the Cobalt Alliance discuss with one another, forging connections and alliances with one another, sharing plans and projects.

One could also wonder why the captain even takes a step back in this moment - and the answer to this question is rooted in many things. The most prominent one, however, is anchored in Lasuri himself, and his role as the Sea Drake; many seek the seas in order to gain fame and fortune, or to make a name for themselves upon its cruel waters. But the Captain has never desired fame or glory. As a youth, he was more muted and plain, always seeming to edge out of notice. Years later, he is now struck in a position of leadership - but to Captain Lasuri Leomaris, the true stars of the Alliance's story are its members, and not him.

And in this moment, it is with a certain sense of pride that he watches the group of people ceasing to be an amalgam of individuals, and slowly but surely grow into an alliance. But now, the time for contemplation had reached its conclusion. It is time for him to step forward again, and have some work done. After all, that is his role, is it not?

"You're welcome to move to the position you with to, Miss Tethia. As I've said to you, you'll find no locked doors with us now." He turns towards the dark haired sailor, speaking as if he had been doing so all along, stepping back into the conversation as if he had never left it. "All you need is Mister Treon's permission, and all will be done. You're used to the Hammerhead and her working, and I know that any help and input your bring is going to be greatly appreciated. It's been a pleasure having you aboard the Dryad... I only hope it's been as much to you as for us." He turns towards Treon then, and smiles. "Take good care of Miss Tethia, Captain.

Stepping away from the railing, he steps forward, peering at both Jadira and Darel. "Well, that settles it then. Miss Thornbloom and Mister Darel will be our temporary communication officers. Given the logistics issues stated here, we'll make sure to plan our courses accordingly, so we can facilitate a good communication between the vessels. That's going to be mine and Mister Treon's responsibility. The rest, Miss Thornbloom and Mister Darel can arrange themselves."

"Allright, is everyone clear on the new objectives? If anybody has questions, it's time to voice them now. Otherwise, we'll start with our preparations, since we've got our work laid out ahead of us."

"Ah, that will make things easier if you, at least, do not need to know our precise location," Treon confirmed.  The danger had they both been using the Wind Carried Words was that one storm could blow both of them out of easy communication.

As Jadira began to speak about Hobnail he listened carefully, nodding at appropriate places.  "I will speak with him then," he nods.  "Try and find what particular spectre from the past is haunting him, perhaps in more ways than one.  Thank you for taking the time to look into this," he says, gratefully, glancing across to Darel to see if the man had any input.

"I believe I already said that you were welcome to return to the Hammerhead any time you wished," he said as the water aspected woman approached.  "I'm glad you decided to join me on there, Miss Tethia."

We'll have plenty of time when at sea. I'm sure you've already noticed how boring travel is, most of the time. We'll practice and discuss the techniques as we travel." Tageru bows and smiles at the young Dragon Blood, a creepy smile that doesn't seem too friendly.

He turns around as he hears the other conversation "Exorcism? While I'm not precisely an 'exorcist', I might be able to help. I can both see and touch immaterial spirits and ghosts. If there is need, I could try and banish the ghost you are talking about. Speaking of which, what are you talking about? If you don't mind me asking, of course. "As it's his ship, I'd leave it up to him to decide who should be involved in dealing with the situation," she adds mildly. "But there's still many hours from now until the next opportunity comes to do so, and we're setting up to embark by midday. Treon and Darel will be leaving us for a time."

"I admit I had expected to rest for longer. But the Alliance has impressed me thus far, and I do not feel right leaving without the Hammerhead. Captain Lasuri has treated me well, and Mister Tageru, I appreciate your medical aid." Her aquamarine eyes flick briefly toward the Wood Aspect, acknowledging his presence. She hardly spoke to him after the day he confronted her, but whether she likes it or not, he had some impact in her decision to stay and rethink her path in life. "But the Hammerhead is where I belong."

"You, Captain Treon, are Kossuth's successor, for better or for worse. I will be there to see his legacy rise from the madness that claimed it. I would be part of that."

Another respectful nod, and Tethia crosses the plank over to the Hammerhead, so as not to interrupt any further. They would have more time to talk on their next journey, after all.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 2 - Decisions and Departures

Kareth's repairs continue to progress at a surprisingly swift pace. At his direction, the cleaning crew partially dissembles the paddlewheels, allowing them to extract gunk and debris that must have been caught in the mechanisms of the wheel for years without a proper mechanic on the ship. Several key components are, of course, missing, or damaged beyond repair; he salvages what he can, and bypasses the rest with some innovative reuse and recycling.

Meanwhile, the Seahaven dockworkers have awoken with the dawn, while intrepid traders prepare to embark on sturdy merchantmen, carrying the bounty of Wavecrest's teeming farmlands toward less fortunate nations. Fishermen have completed their morning ablutions, prepared to pull in enough fish and shellfish to feed the thousands that live in and visit the city.

Amidst the usual harbor excitement, a Wavecrest Navy courier sails in at speed from a roughly southeastern direction. Moments later a resounding horn call heralds the departure of a small fleet of Navy ships -- warships, apparently pursuing whatever target the courier reported on.

The remaining Cobalt crewmen pass the time idly, eyeing the Navy ships enviously. Black Reed keeps the ex-corsairs on the Hammerhead on a tight leash, but the men are clearly unhappy with the delay. The small crew on the Marlena have long since been prepared to leave, and amuse themselves with card games that Sunden appears to be winning consistently. "He's cheating!" Cinna huffs, tossing her cards down and smirking at the mute man, who... of course, says nothing. Toying with her crimson and gold scarf, she sighs and peers at the Dryad, where Zeru is addressing the Captain. "Boo-o-o-ring," she opines. "We don't have to hang around for the repairs, do we?"

A pair of figures hurry up the pier the Cobalt ships share, recognizable to those who sailed with the Dryad before docking at Seahaven. They are Captain Tya Rothalga and her right-hand man, Tya Niakuni.

Those who have not met them before see two women: the older one is taller with cropped blue-grey hair, the younger has green hair in a multitude of braids. They are both marked with the whorled tattoos that Westerners (or well-read foreigners) would recognize immediately as the markings of the Tya, who avoid the social stigma that most Western folks have about female sailors by living as men.

"Good, that seems like a plan to me." Nodding sharply, Lasuri takes another step forward, his tone distinctively more commanding now that a consensus has been reached. "Mister Treon and the crew of the Hammerhead will be heading northwest in their investigation, around the main Wavecrest island and onto its western waters. The Dryad and the Marlena will be heading southeastwards, around the main island and into Wavecrest's southeast archipelago. We'll be on almost exact opposing sides of Wavecrest, at that time - I want no actions that will disrupt our communications at any time. It's highly important that we keep each other informed and that we keep in touch." He nods, then smiles once more. "That said, I implicitly trust all of you with the tasks you've been given. Just be careful out there."

Lifting his head slightly, Lasuri then catches sight of the two arriving Tya, and salutes them before gesturing for them to come on board of the Dryad. "Oi, Captain Rothalga, Mister Niakuni! Step aboard, we'll share a few words."

Then she waited.  She had no place to go aboard the ship as of yet, and would wait for the Captain, or Jadira, to require her further.

"Thank you, Captains," Rothalga says smoothly, stepping aboard the Dryad and acknowledging Lasuri, Treon and Zeru in turn -- eye-to-eye, Captain to Captain. "I certainly hope you are well, and that the fickle sea will favor you."

"We'd heard you were set to depart today," adds green-haired Niakuni. "It dawned upon Captain Rothalga and I that a parting gift would be appropriate, as without the Cobalt Alliance our bones would be at the bottom of the sea, picked clean by sharks."

Rothalga nods at her companion, and Niakuni extends an ornate box carved of soapstone, large enough to fit on two palms. She offers it to Lasuri first, as befitting of the Cobalt Alliance's leader.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 2 - Decisions and Departures

"They would, Mister Zeru. It's the same for everyone who chooses to live on the sea, I suspect. Shore leave is really nice, but more often than not, it's kinda like spices - better in modest doses, so it doesn't overpower your meal."

Turning toward the Tya, Lasuri can only give a warm smile of gratitude followed by a shake of his head. "That might be so, but we wouldn't be here in Wavecrest if that was the case - and we'd not have met the great people with did, some of which decided to join our cause. All in all, I'd say we won big too... But that's the law of the sea, it seems."

Eying The present handed to him, Lasuri looks suddenly very much humble. Custom dictates that a gift be accepted when given, however - as a show of respect for the thought of the giver, and the sincerity of the gesture. The captain bows gracefully, and for a moment the fluidity of the gesture and the humility of the man gives a very different image of the Sea Drake. As if, another time, another when, the gentlemanly rogue might have had much nobler trappings.

"On behalf of the Cobalt Alliance, I give my thanks to you, Captain Roghalga, Sir Niakuni. For that gesture, and also for having crossed our paths. We're not such a big organization by any stretch. Every friend and ally is a precious commodity to us." He inclines his head once again, then sets to carefully open it - it only makes sense that everyone assembled could see the gift bestowed to the Alliance, after all.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 2 - Decisions and Departures

Anyone expecting jewels or artifacts may be disappointed to see what lies inside: several individually wrapped portions of a glossy pale mint substance. Gum? It very much looks like a fancy box of very mundane candy.

"This may not look like much," Niakuni explains, "but it is the secret of our guild of divers. Miss Thornbloom made good use of it during the Chrysalis excursion and we thought it would be useful in larger quantity for your crew."

Rothalga inclines her head. "Indeed, and as previously stated, you will have the trust and aid of our guildhouses, should they be able to provide it." Her gift to Lasuri is even smaller in size: a medallion of nacre and ivory that fits into the palm, bearing a carved image of a woman surrounded by storms. "They will know what this means. Carry it with you as a reminder of our debt."

"Thank you once again, sailors of Cobalt..."
"...and safe journeys to you all," Niakuni concludes.

OOC: As said in Announcements, new threads coming Friday. Any unfinished business at that point stays unfinished! [Private to Cathak Garel Treon: Let me know whether you'll have Darel take care of Hobnail, or just interrogate the crewman for now and leave the 'cure' for when you can reunite with the Dryad. It's also possible we could start a mini for Hobnail with Jadira etc. assuming it happens while Kareth finishes repairs, if you want.]

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 2 - Decisions and Departures

Kiana moved a piece of hair out of her face as she looked at Jadira, easily busy work for her hands now that the topic of the conversation had moved to herself.

"Ah, my strengths?  I'm afraid my upbringing hasn't prepared me well for life at sea.  I'm a fair craftswoman, though by no means an artisan.  I can do basic repairs and such.  I know a few languages, and I was heavily schooled up until I left the Isle.  Some of my studies involved the occult, but it was not my specialty.  I am used to hardship, of course, so weathering the sea won't be much of a problem for me...my eyes are ever sharp, as my other senses as well--and my Father's training has left me 'capable' in a fight, if need be."  Of course, until they saw that last part, one could only guess how well she could use those white jade arms.

"Is that a good start?"  She asked Jadira.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 2 - Decisions and Departures

Zeru smiled at Captain Rothalga and Niakuni. "Thank you friends. It was an honor to have fought beside you in battle," then he looks at Niakuni, "And it was an honor to dive with the best." He bows low and sweeps off his hat as a show of respect.

He straightens quickly. "And now if you'll all excuse me, I must return to my ship and crew." and with that he walks off the gangplank and back to his home on the Marlena.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 2 - Decisions and Departures

"More than enough, for now," Jadira replies to Kiana approvingly.

She pauses to offer the Tya a bow and a word of thanks for their generosity. "We will remember this," the first mate says simply, then returns to showing Kiana where she will be stationed, and where her quarters will be.

"Your keen senses will be welcome aboard the Dryad, and I or Lasuri will incorporate you into lookout duties when you are not assisting Kareth." She points out the dour dark-haired man still deep into the paddlewheel repairs. "I am unsure you are familiar with ancient machinery as he is, but if you were assisting Captain Blackblade, your work with Engineer Kareth may be similar."

"During boarding actions, you will of course join the offense, or aid in defending the crew should we be boarded in turn..."

(OOC - We can just assume Jadira continues talking with Kiana till the departure.)

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 2 - Decisions and Departures

Captain Rothalga and Niakuni leave the Cobalt Alliance to their final preparations, confident that they have done all they can to make up for their generosity, for now. Perhaps they will meet again some day.

The Hammerhead is free to depart on its own, headed northward from the Seahaven harbor to skirt around the Abalone landmass, and further westward from there. The nearest island to the Black Rock Chasm goes by the name of Nkiru, and will be their next immediate destination.

The Dryad and Marlena depart two hours after the sun hits its zenith, when Kareth puts the finishing touches on his repair work. As the region southeast of Abalone hosts an innumerable amount of small islands, it is less certain exactly where they may encounter the Lintha. But they are well stocked and equipped for most any possibility to come.

With Wavecrest's capitol behind them, the Alliance returns to the sea, and all the perils and fortunes that await them.
