Re: The Lasts Breaths of Ashenport

Bereft of consciousness the woman hardly even stirs as Lyriel picks her up with one strong arm locked around her chest. In her dreams though her prospective groom still has her in the hold of his tentacles and she can't completly fight off his chaotic influence yet.

22:35, Today: Levkojen rolled 5 using 1d20. Save vs Chaostouched.

Re: The Lasts Breaths of Ashenport

Ravex interdicts himself between Gethin's new position and the mass of the voice. Even though his attack isn't exactly on the mark, it is enough to get the sea-gods' attention. "Come on you ugly shit! I've got a tasty metal stick, just for you!"

Minor: Activate Rain of Steel
Move + Standard: Charge to K3. Rolled 17 to hit vs AC. Dealing 8 damage.

The voice is marked.

Shark-tooth necklace AND Rain of Steel are active.

Re: The Lasts Breaths of Ashenport

Dry land, yes, that would be nice, Gethin reflects as he fights to retain his balance against the pulls and tugs of the waist-high subterranean tide and abjures Pelor to spare him the deeper currents.

Ravex cuts through the water--it slides off his scales seamlessly. A tentacle whips overhead (OA Threatening Reach 3 misses although range on tentacle is M2). He thrusts his spear at one of its "blow holes"! No time for niceties in mortal combat. The aperture seals before his head can penetrate, an unknown membrane closing the gap. The force of the rejection jars Ravex's wrist.

In retaliation, two limbs lash at the dragonborn, each blessed with hook-like additions. They slip between the plates of his armor, both scale and plate (10+14 dmg and chaos touched; Ravex is bloodied), leaving one his forearms a smoking black mess.

Re: The Lasts Breaths of Ashenport

Lyriel backed away guardedly, burdened with a prospective rescuee and unwilling to risk being caught up in the tentacle-tangle. She wasn't completely removed from the action, though: a few barked commands improved the defensive positioning of those already so entangled.

Std: Second Wind: Lyriel regains 15 hit points and gains a +2 bonus to all defenses until the start of her next turn.
  Move: SW-SW to N3.
Minor: NTA: Gethin and Ravex can shift up to 2 squares. Gethin and Ravex gain a +2 power bonus to AC until Lyriel's EONT.
Assuming that she avoids the OA...
  Free: Drop Levkojen.
  Free: Swap weapon.

Poised Assault: +1 to the attack rolls of basic attacks.

Re: The Lasts Breaths of Ashenport

"Thank you!" Gethin gasps, to Pelor and to Dawnstone and to his spirit.

Gethin takes only a moment to re-assess the situation, then presses the attack.  Lyriel's distraction allows him to dart in, he jabs hard, then he moves to help the newcomer.  Partly because it's the right thing to do, partly because she flattered him so beautifully, party because he hopes she's got some fight left in her because Gethin is about spent.

EFFECTS: +2 AC
OUT OF TURN (LYRIEL): Shift 2 to J2
STANDARD: Invigorating Smite vs Voice (rolled 30 vs Will for 15 dmg & bloodied allies within 5, that's Ravex and Lev, gain 8 HP)
MOVE: to K4 (provoking OA, but marked by Ravex)
MINOR: Lay on Hands, Lev (Gethin -1 surge & gain Resist 3 All USoNT; Lev heals surge+7 HP = 19 HP)

SUMMARY: Voice hit for 15 dmg, Ravex +8 HP, Lev +27 HP

Re: The Lasts Breaths of Ashenport

Shrill, what a shrill sound, you think. Like a little boy whining over a lolly dropped in the sand. A sound that inspires both pity and fury. Stupid little boys. The voice cries like a little boy at the first touch of Gethin's blade. That must be why it doesn't attack either Gethin or Lyriel when it has the opportunity to do so. It doesn't want Ravex to touch it.

Silent, the swimmer loops around the voice and snares Ravex, jerking him closer (grabbed and pulled; he's above the tendril in deep water).

In reply to Autarch (msg # 776):

The spirit once again vanishes, only to appear by Ravex in the water, pulling him out and placing him back on land. The shaman refused to allow this foul thing an easy victory by drowning all his friends, as it did all those townsfolk. Tonight, you will be the one overwhelmed and dragged to your own death! His mental message from the spirit to the thing went out.

(OOC-Minor action spirit vanishes.

Move action-Spirit reappears in K6-no OA possible due to its teleporting. Ravex gains 4 temp HP.

Standard action-Moves Ravex to K2 on land. Spirit now at L2. Any ally next to spirit gets +2 on all saves.)

By now, the dragonborn was used to being teleported around by the crystal-man's crazy hi-jinks. So the warrior just kept on poking, and slashing, and breathing fire. All the usual Ravexian hate and discontent.

Shark Tooth and Rain of Steel deals 2 and 6 damage

Minor: Dragons breath. Rolled 28 vs Voice reflex, dealing 7 fire damage.
Standard: Reaping Strike vs Voice. Rolled 21 vs AC, dealing 7 damage. Automatically deals 2 damage on a miss.

The voice remains Marked
Save Ends: Rolled a 20

Re: The Lasts Breaths of Ashenport

For a second time the woman is wakened by the golden knight. ''I thank you, kind man. You keep saving me. Perhaps I should make it clear to Dagon now that I don't want him.''
Fluidly the woman rises to her feet and moves past the wolf-woman only to dive into the water again, nimble like a threading needle. At the same time a strong wind suddenly rises in the cave and ruffles the calm water. The woman resurfaces again and commands the wind to rise even stronger, calling a storm which drives the two tentacled monstrosities towards the shore and mercilessly harrowing the large voice. Standing in the eye of the storm but totally calm herself she strikes out with her right hand, ramming it into one of the softer parts of the smaller beast, while her left summons a swirl of magic fire and throws it in the bigger beast's face (in lack of a better term).
''Go away,'' she sings, ''I don't want no part of you and my answer is no! No populating of the seas! And now shoo, into the deep and away!''
A quick elegant backstroke later and she's backed away again from the aberrant monsters, into the cover of one of the snake statues.

AP       : Call up the Savage Wind vs Voice crit, 19 dmg

Voice and Tendril are slid one square south if K3 is free, or one square SE if not
STANDARD : Calm Before the Storm vs Tendril hit Fort 28, 10 dmg
stance (slowed, immediate counterattack if adjacent enemy attacks)
NO ACTION: Desert Wind Flurry, 6 fire dmg to Voice, attacks-2 vs Lev, Lev shifts* to M5

Re: The Lasts Breaths of Ashenport

Red! for the paladin's spill.
Crème! for the shape changer's loss.
Salmon! for the dragonborn's deluge.
Okra! for the voice's effluvia.

It's true. After the bloodletting, the curious clotting of Dagon's mouthpiece produces spiny honeycombs and not the sweet, crunchy ones. They mat Lyriel's fur and befoul Gethin's breastplate. A few of them reach the shore, nestling beside Lev's toes. One, more intrepid the rest, leaps over the ledge and smears itself all over one of DawnStone's forgotten crystals.

Lyriel held up one arm to fend off the worst of the ichory assault, and especially to ensure that none of it got in her face; she didn't need that stuff finding its way inside her. As for the grime everywhere else, it couldn't be helped, and was joining the already-considerable quantity that had accumulated during their expeditions into the church and the caves.

Re: The Lasts Breaths of Ashenport

Gethin sees his old nemesis the Tendril drawing closer.  He'll go toe-to-toe with anything in a fair fight, but grabbing a metal man and dragging him under the water?  That's just not an equal contest.  It would be like Gethin punting the slimy squid onto the sand and just waiting for it to expire.  Where's the glorious victory in that?

So Gethin decides to concentrate his efforts on the larger thing.  Get it off Ravex, too, he hopes.  The paladin's attack is powerful, but one of the many slimy arms bats it harmlessly aside.

Re: The Lasts Breaths of Ashenport

The woman hits the tentacled absurdity as it encroachs on her, pummeling it right in a saucer-like eye right above the beak. The thing's tentacles flail at her, but fail to find purchase as the woman slips through its grasp. She waits on the terrible bite of the beak but it isn't coming - perhaps it needs to hold her fast first, to get in reach with the powerful but stunted maw?
She cries out in delight, calling to the sea in a single high note. And the sea replies, sending a single buffeting wave at the cavern shore. The large voice is too big to be baffled by a wave, but the smaller tendril is badly shaken through, and after it is drenched it has also to suffer a gust of fire summoned by the woman.
After that she retreats into the cover of another statue, to get away from tendril and beak. Better to be save than sorry.

The voice weeps from orbs and rents alike.

Does the voice weep for the shattering of its maritime nuptials? Does the voice weep for the loss of its storm-tossed seaport? Does the voice weep for the unforgiving swath of khopesh? No, surely it does not. It weeps for it will have to ride, have to ride the night current. Already it begins to drift away to the wrong depths of the lagune. Chaos Touched: if you're chaos touched, the voice can force you to reroll any one roll once per round. He can only do this once per round. For example, he had Ravex reroll his save which he made anyway.
Abominable Horror: anyone ending his turn within the aura is marked by the Mezzo until the end of its next turn
Ledge: The ledge is roughly 2 squares high and requires a DC 20 Athletics check to climb.
Tide: Rows K, L, and M have waist-high water. Treat as difficult terrain but no more.

Re: The Lasts Breaths of Ashenport

''I think all those marriage vibes I get here might be a bit premature.'' Proclaims the woman. She continues to ramble.
''Actually I'm strongly inclined against the whole union, considering that I've not even been asked beforehand! Seems like this might have been arranged by my family without my knowledge? I strongly object this treatment of my own preferences and would wish for a great deal more of respect from my prospective groom.'' She shoves at the masses of tendrils which engulf her and averts her face as to avoid an unwanted kiss. Which might or might not have been coming, considering the sharp beak snapping open and close inches before her nose.
''Also, I don't approve of importunate best men!'' Forming her hand into a hard edge she thrusts it deep into the mass of tentacles, evocing streams of gushing ichor and the smell of burnt cuttlefish.

As the tentacled monster deflates and sinks to the bottom of the cave, eldritch alien energies, a gift of Dagon, course through the woman and take her out of sight. ''I... can't see myself anymore? Am I still here? Oh! I am invisible!''
She adapts quickly and uses her newfound advantage to paddle around the big beast still alive, forcing it to divide its attention between herself and her allies on the beach.

Re: The Lasts Breaths of Ashenport

In reply to Levkojen (msg # 791):

As soon as the brave monk burnt the remaining tendril to ash, the spirit vanished once more. Only to reappear by Lyriel, and carry her over and place her near the remains of the dead appendage. Filling her with life and energy to destroy Dagon's foul voice.

(OOC-Minor action-Spirit vanishes.

Move action-Spirit appears next to Lyriel. She gains 4 temp HP.

Standard action-Moving Lyriel to L4. No OA from Voice. Spirit is now at M4. All allies near spirit get +2 on all saves.)

Re: The Lasts Breaths of Ashenport

Not caring one whit for tradition, Levkojen extricates herself from the bonds of matrimonial and oceanic monstrosities. Plunging her hand within the mantle of the monster, she bumps her fingers around a shell. Extending them, she encircles it within her palm and squeezes with bone-crushing force.

It pops with an audible hiss and its owner, the cepholopod, sinks below, its spirit and various other vital organs crushed.

She finds the experience liberating (free shift granted by Desert Wind Flurry).

With what really amounts to its lasts thrashes, the shadow of Dagon cuffs the paladin (hit twice for 17 dmg and Chaos Touched). The blows knock him off-balance momentarily and bring a welcome trickle of blood to his lips (Gethin -> Bloodied). Even though a slight red haze obscures his vision, he's into it. He's pretty sure he can land the killing blow and impress the new girl, newly available.

Re: The Lasts Breaths of Ashenport

The faintly quease-inducing lurch that accompanied the act of being whisked away elsewhere was thankfully brief, although suddenly finding herself mired in the knee-deep water wasn't the most welcome development, even if it did allow for a surprise slash.

  Free: Swap weapon (sword).
Std: MBA hits Voice for 16 damage.
  Move: None.
  Minor: None.
