Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Black Unicorns Fly

(GM note: this is the Dreamlands thread. Things happening here can be before, after or during any other time in the game. Use this as much as you want.)

Getting to the Dreamlands is difficult. Claustrophobic, endless crawlspaces; wariness and the smell of dust from under a thousand beds. You sneeze, and a cheshire cat answers with "gesundheit!" before its smile fades mere inches from your cat allergy. But you know the reward at the end is great...

Getting to the Dreamlands from Sunset District almost automagically drops one at the reflection of the Mosaic Stairway. The coloured steps ooze down from the bright skies, narrowly avoiding floating rubber candy and small electrical nimbuses of brother-sister arguments, twisting comfortably past the spots lovers loved. It is a busy place, most of the time, if you can look sideways; but those who want privacy can have it for the cost of a unicorn's smile.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Black Unicorns Fly

For a brief flash, it came to her again. The hot arid desert with a thousand forges ringing. And in a brief flash, it all evaporated in green fire. It came and went so quickly that she couldn't be sure she had just experienced it, and the confusing nature of the Dreamlands muddied her perceptions further. A dream within a dream ended and now she was amid the relatively more familiar Mosaic Stairway.

"Again?"

Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Black Unicorns Fly

A bus driver wanders over the street, confused, searching. It seems he lost something. And you see it - a light, barely visible, making the sound of a happy infant. It draws the driver closer - but as soon as he reaches out to touch it, it grows dim, the sounds emanating from it turning into a painful screech. He flinches, tears shimmering in his eyes, then rolling down his cheeks. Where they fall on the pavement, small flowers rise up, eyes bleary.

"Don't worry. I can help you." You didn't notice the dark distortion hovering over the driver. Its voice is sweet like honey and sultry like the promise a woman can give to a man. "I'll save your little girl. You just have to do me a favor in return..."

Pain etches deep lines on the driver's face. He nods.

Zelda looks around in confusion at Saint Francis' City. She doesn't remember wanting to visit the Dreamlands tonight, and when she does she usually goes straight to Aztallan. Is she just dreaming about being in the Dreamlands? Is that even a thing that can happen?

Either way, there only seems to be one other person around. Zelda decides to approach him if only because that's better than doing nothing.

"Hi there, I'm... Rose."

Best to use her alias just in case this is a real person after all. Not that she's transformed right now anyways, but still.

"What brings you here?"

The wold explodes into dark claws, bone-white fangs and screaming.

"Mine! He's mine! You can't have him!"

An eight feet tall, cadaverous woman bleeding from her eyes holds the man's ears shut.

"He can't hear you anyways! You don't have anything for him even if he could!"

She tries dragging him away, but her hands simply pass through the man, who seems slightly confused by the experience.

A small girl, five or six years old, cries somewhere nearby. The man looks around, then down to his body. He opens his chest like a cabinet - the smell of antiseptic washes over you like a tidal wave - the little girl is in there, in a hospital, connected to all sorts of tubes, stuck by an impossible amount of needles, screaming, calling for Daddy.

He cries.

"Oh, and you do?"

Undaunted by the entity, Zelda holds out her Phylactery and attempts to transform. Though understandably frustrated when her magic withholds itself, she decides to maintain the pose for effect (hoping that her foe doesn't know what really just happened) and press on.

"I am Red-Hot Rose of Aztallan, and this is your warning! Leave that man alone or there will be consequences!"

Even as she asserts herself, however, a part of Zelda can't help but feel for the stranger in his obvious pain. With his soul laid bare like this, it only takes her a moment to reach out with her heart and know what troubles him.

13:01, Today: Zelda rolled 2 successes using 5d10 with the World of Darkness nWoD system with a target of 8, rerolling 10s with rolls of 2,4,9,7,9.  Composure + Subterfuge to not let on that Zelda just tried and failed to do something.

12:38, Today: Zelda failed (no successes) using 1d10 with the World of Darkness nWoD system with a target of 8, rerolling 10s with rolls of 4.  Presence + Intimidation.

...That failure, unlike the first, was quite expected. Can I make it dramatic or is earning Beats/Willpower/Wisps/etc. "disabled" in this thread?

12:45, Today: Zelda rolled 1 success using 6d10 with the World of Darkness nWoD system with a target of 8, rerolling 10s with rolls of 3,2,5,10(+7),3,6.  Wits + Empathy.

If you think the Empathy roll should be getting a bonus from the fact that his thoughts and feelings are being presented visually (albeit in weird dream-logic ways) then use as many of these dice as applicable:

12:48, Today: Zelda failed (no successes) using 5d10 with the World of Darkness nWoD system with a target of 8, rerolling 10s with rolls of 5,1,1,7,7.  See above.

Also, if you think it's appropriate here I want to treat that as a roll to Uncover a Clue; relevant rules bits under "What is a Clue?," "Step Five: Uncover the Clue," and "Clue Elements" on CofD pages 78-79 if you're not familiar already. If you don't have the book then I have time right now to summarize the investigation system in the OOC thread like I said a while back that I would.

"What's that?" Shira asked Inari, her ever faithful companion, "It sounds like trouble, we should investigate!"

The normally stoic young woman in the waking world moved with haste towards the commotion. Time and space generally didn't mean much in here, especially in dream form, so her usual supernatural senses weren't operating at peak effectiveness.

She bursts onto the scene with only a vague idea on the situation, and sees a man, a tall, dark figure, and a familiar face...

"What's going on here?"

The girl's sobs and whimpers become louder, shrill enough to cut. And cut they do, surrounding the man in a razor-wire web of regret and guilt, tearing at his flesh, leaving him bleeding from countless gashes. Even his tears turn into tiny ghouls that rip at his flesh. He just stands there... until the cadaverous woman whispers into his ear. His eyes open, wide, in surprise - the ghouls feasting on his flesh stop to think. Even the razor wire is still for a second. He nods, slowly, the instruments of torture disappearing like a bad dream, and reaches out to grab the woman's hand. Unsurprisingly, his hand passes through hers, but he seems to be going somewhere, despite not moving an inch.

The woman-thing laughs. It is an unpleasant sound. Then Inari hissed at the cadaverous woman-like thing. It replied in kind, its breath sweetish rot.

Zelda gives her sudden backup a quick sideways glance.

"Oh hey Shira, what does it look like is happening?"

Focusing her gaze back on the apparition, she clutches her wrist slightly tighter and calls upon her magic again.

"Blazing Thorn, set up!"

A few seconds later Zelda is in full Regalia, shield and pistol raised defiantly against her presumed foe.

"Last chance to leave peacefully before we Light you up, pun intended."

Not sure if we can go ahead and start shooting/punching or if Phlegyas wants the enemy to be able to take its next "turn" first, so I'll hold off for now.

The girl looks up at the Princess with eyes of pure sadness.

"Daddy is trying to keep me with him... but I am already long gone."

The medical equipment around her shows only flatlines and alerts. Yet the hospital staff seem far away and uninterested.

"I am just the memory that makes him hurt himself. And she - well, she has her own ideas. I wonder how long until Daddy finally hurts himself enough to let me finally sleep?"

Outside, the cadaverous woman looks at the two Princesses discussing the assault, and cackles.

"Hee... I used to be like that, so long ago. Now there's only pain in the world! Endless Mirror!"

The last two words make the dreamscape twist and contort painfully - but only for a moment. Where the woman was are now two Princesses, weighed down by leaden chains of regret. Mirror images of the two heroines who were about to confront the nightmarish woman. And they seem to be drowning, clothes and hair floating upwards. They try to breathe, but they can't. They struggle, but it's like they were caught in one of those dreams...

"It sounds like your daddy loved you very much.  It's... hard to let go of someone you love so much." Zoe closes her eyes a moment, and a single tear rolls down her cheek.  "I should know."  After a deep breath, she again addresses the girl.  "Even if he does let you go though, you will always be with him, in here." Zoe touches her chest.  "I know, it sounds like sappy bullshit, but it's true."  Zoe smiles for a moment, wiping the tear from her cheek.  "But it'll be in a better place.  Do you have any good memories?  Maybe we can help him"

The little girl shakes her head slowly, looking at Zoe.

"Thank you for your tears. I... know all that. But he just can't let go. He's an obsessive jerk, and clings to me as if I am the only thing left in his life. This girl you see is already gone in the real world, and only this memory is still alive in a fashion..."

A sad little smile wrinkles her lips.

"He's being taken advantage of. The only person who could help him is he himself. He just needs to let go. But he won't. So he tortures himself, and me, and..."

An iron plate appears over the girl's mouth. Long metal nails drive in through it, dozens of them, into her face, through flesh bone and tooth, driven by an unseen hammer - blood splatters around the edges of the plate and the nails - sounds of cracking bone fill the hospital room. The bed grows metal, clawed hands that hold her in place while she thrashes and struggles, eyes wide.

Inari shakes his head and adopts a thoughtful pose.

"Well, one would think that saving oneself is the proper thing to do. However, we are dealing with the dreamworld here, and such logic will surely be flawed. There is always the possibility that this is a trap, and that trying to save them will end up with you suffering the same fate as them. The black bitch didn't seem overly friendly, so this being a trap is my best estimate. Gimme a cookie."

Spending a Wisp to transform instantly.

For this thread only, you start each scene with full Wisps and expenditures are not carried over to anywhere else. Damage also doesn't carry over to other scenes.

Zoe reacts quickly, using her everyday logic to combat the dreamworld. She realizes a bit late that this simply won't work. Light and Balm coalesce and bead off the apparition in the hospital room like tears on a glass window. Only, the glass is stained with memories, and the tears sizzle and burn like gasoline. The resulting flames explode, showing Zoe out of the driver's chest/hospital room like a cannonball, and she impacts the stairs a hundred feet away, leaving a small crater.

The two other princesses lay into the ghostly reflections dangling in front of them.

Inari covers his eyes with a paw. "Fuck."

There is a bright flash, and for a moment the two feel like they are punching/shooting at a mirror at pointblank range. The mirror is made of rubber, and smells like an exploding tar pit; the world is suddenly ablur. They realize it's not the world that is moving, but their bodies, and they impact the stairs right next to Zoe a split second later, each girl leaving a small, smoking crater. There is shrill, unpleasant laughter from behind the mirror, and the driver makes mechanical steps to somewhere; his image twists and becomes darker, like an out-of-place piece, clumsily photoshopped element on a photo.

With a deep sigh, Inari waddles over to sit on the pavement and inspect the girls' situation. "Dumb and dumber." He laughs.
