Log 1-11

Lot begins stepping down the stairs.  His flashlight is off and he is looking down the stairwell.  Although you don't see anything, everyone can hear a faint clunking sound.  It is the sound of shoes on the metal stairs.  Apparently, somewhere below, the Agent is quickly running up at a very fast pace.

Viper is still rising quickly on the cable.

Laz and Roach go back into the office with the computer.  On the screen, the following words still appear:

Welcome, Sarah.  Please input your login id and passcode.  You look very beautiful today.

Roach sits down at the computer while Laz pulls out the disks given to him by Binary.

A familiar voice comes on your headsets.  "Hello out there."  It is X.  You've never been so glad to hear the voice of your Operator.  "We've had some problems with calamari out here.  They know we're in this vicinity.  For now, they've moved on.  Hammer's got the EMP pulse up.  We've got enough to give them one solid hit, but as you know, we can't do that with you in the Matrix."

There is a momentary pause.  "Okay.  Let me get that computer accessed for you."

Suddenly, the pop up password window flashes off and the screen flashes: "Welcome to the NSA."

"Okay," X says.  "Just put the first disk in.  I'll upload it from remote."

As he waits for Laz to respond, X says, "By the way, you've got two marines standing at the north stairwell.  There is also an AMC and jeep en route to the building right now.  Total of approximately 15 marines.  The security station is currently unmanned, as they are helping the injured marines and demolition team out."

He lets out a deep breath.  "I've found Binary.  He's approximately 200 miles southeast of your location in the vicinity of Las Vegas.  Don't know how he got there, but we can't do anything for him right now."

[Note: This is the same map.  It is just reproduced here for your convenience.]

Re: Log 1-11

Laz puts in the first CD.  He sees that it is labelled:  "Agents" and "Arms and Armaments."

Lot is doing something with the grenades on the the stairwell.

"Great!" X says.  "I'll start uploading it now."

Viper is ascending.  About 10 seconds until he reaches the top.  (The jump will be Acrobatics -4 because of the speed, but +2 for two people helping him.  Or he may choose to do something else.)

Re: Log 1-11

Viper gulps on realizing how close he's come to death dangling at the end of this cable. As he rises faster and faster, though, a rush starts to come over him. By the time he's nearing the door at the top, a big grin is plastered to his face. He yells to the waiting figures, "Clear the door!"

As X comes back online, Viper laughs out loud, they just might make it out of here alive. "Welcome back, X! Watch this one!" It's apparent that Viper's youth and a certain 'Devil May Care' attitude has begun to reassert itself.

Re: Log 1-11

A figure comes into view below.  Lot's flashlight has picked up the Agent.  He is quickly moving up.  Just 15 seconds or so...

Viper launches himself just before the cable reaches the top...

Roach and Laz sit idly as a DOWNLOADING bar appears on the screen.

Lot finishes his preparations and runs up the stairs.

Viper lands safely, rolls into a ball, and smashes past the others.

You all look down at the figure quickly ascending.  Lot's thermite grenade goes off, and the entire stairway begins to shake and rupture.  A smoke grenade goes off at the same time, obscuring the entire area.

The agent enters the smoky trap.  He steps...and begins to fall into the gaping hole created by the grenade.  His feet slide through, but his grip catches tight.  He is dangling by the strength of his two hands.  His feet hang over the abyss.

The stairs, however, are not very stable.  They begin to bend inwards as cables snap.  The stairs are leaning at a 45 degree angle into the actual shaft itself, held up only because they are leaning on the elevator cable and one bent piece of metal.  The Agent is holding on at an impossible angle.

And then his grip slids back.  He tries to pull himself up...

But it is too late.  The Agent falls silently into the deep elevator shaft with the bottom waiting for him over 2000 feet below.  The last thing you see is his hand go to his earpiece.  He seems to be mouthing something.

He unlimbers the AK from his back, and speaks to X. "X, orient me. Which way to the stairway where the Marines are holding out? I want to cover their assault path, just in case." Once he has the spot from X, he'll set himself up to cover the hallway to ensure that they Marines can't surprise the group.

Re: Log 1-11

A large grin vanishes from Lot's face as he watches the agent fall into the darkness.  The man did not react at all like a man falling to his certain death. Lot tries to shrug it off. Survive or not that agent isnt going to bother them again this day.

Still a little creeped out Lot's hand instinctively reaches for his gun.  He draws and takes a moment to reload and chamber it as he follows Viper down the hall.  In an attempt to shake off the chill running up his spine and lighten the mood Lot mumbles to Viper, "When this mission is over I'm gonna drink 'til I can't piss straight."

Re: Log 1-11

Lot and Viper begin to move down the hall.  Everyone suddenly gets a strange feeling like they've been there before...a sense of familiarity.  The deja vu passes in just a moment, but then Viper and Lot find that there is suddenly a wall where there used to be a hallway.

X breaks out over the intercom.  "What the--?"  A pause.  "Guys, the floorplan just changed.  Some walls have just been put up.  And..."  A longer pause.  "This can't be happening."

Roach, Jade and Laz watch the monitor as it still says DOWNLOADING.  It is almost done.

X screams, "Oh $@!*%#&!"  His expletives are cut by static and their incomprehensible gutteral sound.  "Abort!" he yells.  "Abort!"

A new message appears:  DOWNLOAD COMPLETE.

"They're everywhere.  Four coming from the security station.  Three near the northern stairway.  And three just appeared in the room directly south of the upload room, room 129.  They're all Agents!  Get out of there and get to the extraction--"

A pause.  You hear tapping on the keyboard.  "Oh, crap.  The walls block off the extraction point.  They've done this on purpose.  They've trapped you."

Mitose is still just to the south of room 129.  "Mitose, get your ass moving," X says.  "The Agents will be opening the door in six seconds."

X continues, "Okay, this is what we can do.  There is a crawlspace around the pillar below room 512.  You can crawl back there and remove a ventilator grate.  Room 512 is heavily ventilated on all four sides.  You can probably get out through the north."

He pauses.  "I hope."

[Note: Red lines mark new walls.]

Roach, Jade, and Lazarus: in room 329
Lot and Viper:  In the walled corner just below 339 and 343.
Mitose:  In the hallway south of 129.

"I'm too wounded to take out marines...I watch the hallway with our exit, someone should cover the others...they're uploading data now."
He moves to do as he has said he would, moving carefully and checking that teh passage to teh hardline is clear.

En masse, the party runs toward the small crawlspace.  Lot crawls in first and looks at the grated cover.

The door with the Agents opens.  You hear footsteps, but the small crawlspace is too crowded.

Lot finds that the screws are loose and stripped.  He rips off the cover and squeezes into the small room.  It is a room with some sort of generator humming and an air conditioning conduit across the ceiling.  It is small and crowded with machinery.  There are similar gratings on each wall, but each is about six feet off the ground.  Lot may be able to climb up on the machinery and get a better perspective.

The Agents appear to be coming north up the hallway.

Lot scans the room and considers climbing on top of the generator briefly.  He grimaces at the thought of climbing around on strange generators as he brushes the dust from the crawlspace off his hands.  Avoiding the generator and giving it what he considers a wide berth in such a confined area, Lot skirts the edge of the room and climbs across the clutter towards the north wall.  He keeps his eyes open for a suitable structure on which he can stand in order to reach the grate.

X says, "Looks like they still think you're in the computer room.  Get out now.  As soon as they interface with Zero-One, they'll pinpoint you."

Viper holds out his hands and helps Lot step up.  The grating, like the other one, is very old.  However, Lot will have to punch it out, which may create some noise and attract attention.

Lot peeks through the grate, sees nothing, and smashes it.  It clangs to the floor, opening up a space wide enough to crawl out.

Jade safely moves back in with the others as the Agents move past, and Laz waits for last.

X says, "Looks like those agents will discover you're missing in just a few seconds.  The other agents from the north and security room are making their way--"

Locke interrupts him.  "They're back!"

"Oh, %$#%*&@!" X says, his curses drowned in sounds and chaos from the ship.  "Where did they come from?  I see ten, twenty..."  He pauses.  "Make that fifty-six sentinels bearing down on us.  They're coming in fast.  God, how I hate calamari.  Looks like a scout is--"

Hammer's voice breaks him off.  "It's attaching to the hull!"

"Get out of there fast!" X tells you.

"We have to use the EMP,"  Locke says.  "If we don't, everyone will die.  Get yourselves to that hardline now!  Everyone jack out.  That's an order."

"It's penetrating the hull plating," Hammer says.

"Get to your stations," Locke orders the others in the ship, his voice fading to the back.  "Do it now!"

"Okay, guys, the agents are bearing down on you.  Get to that phone.  I see three moving--"

The line suddenly goes dead.

Viper and Laz begin a tug-of-war with the Agent inside.

Jade and Roach crash into the door leading to the warehouse.  They bounce off the door when it doesn't open.

Lot tosses his grenade just as an Agent is stepping out from behind the door.  The Agent looks down and watches as the grenade bounces off the wall, between his legs, and then into the room he is exiting.  He quickly shuts the door.  You hear it bang up against the other two Agents with him as he locks them in with the grenade.

Viper and Laz give one final push, and Viper comes free.  He loses his shoe in the process and is now barefoot.  He and Laz tumble to the ground.

Roach pushes hard on the bar across the door, and it swings open.  You can hear the ringing of the telephone behind you.  He and Jade stumble back toward the phone 50 feet away.

And you remember that only one person can use the phone at a time.

Viper pulls his grenade and flicks out the pin with his thumb.

The Agent down the hall is turning slowly towards you.

Another Agent pokes his head through the opening where the grating had been and Viper just fell through.  Viper tosses his grenade into the opening.

There is an explosion as Lot's grenade in the other room goes off.  The shock temporarily knocks the Agent down the hall off balance.  The other Agent looks curiously behind him as the grenade goes past him and into the tiny generator room.

Jade sees that the large door cannot be locked from the inside, but there are large barrels on the industrial shelves on either side of the door.  They are large and heavy and could be used to block it (since the door opens inward).

Mitose and Laz are moving into the warehouse room, followed by Viper.  As they begin to retreat, Lot takes good aim at the momentarily stunned Agent.

Viper scoots back out of the way, gets to his feet, and starts to run into the room.  Jade is at the door, ready to close it when everyone is clear.  Laz moves past her.  Viper is near the doorway just on his feet.

And Lot fires.  The bullet from the gun is a solid hit in the Agent's shoulder just above the heart.  His shoulder is knocked back by the hit, and his sunglasses go flying into the wall.  His earpiece falls out of his ear.  However, despite the blood forming on his white shirt, the Agent turns back and begins walking toward Lot and the group.

Viper's grenade is about to go off.

Roach is far beyond Jade, having slipped into Focus to get closer to the phone.  He is reaching out for the phone.  It is within arm's reach...

An explosion from the generator room throws...Jade, Mitose, and Lot off their feet.  The lights in the room flicker and then go out.  Emergency lights in the corners dimly light the warehouse.

There is pressure from the other side of the door as the Agent, miraculously still moving after the explosion, begins to open it from the other side.

Viper begins to pull out one of the barrels as Lot and Mitose get to their feet.  Jade will not be able to hold the door for long.

Lot rises to his feet and takes a moment to glace at the hardline.  Seeing that it is free for another exit, and with time running out, he grabs for Mitose and points at the ringing phone.  He yells to compensate for the ringing in his own ears, "Mitose, your injured ass is next!".  Without waiting to check on Mitose's progress Lot runs over to assist Viper with the barrel.

Mitose first must put the phone on the hook.  He does so and waits.

Viper and Lot manage to get the barrels in front of the door.  The Agent is pushing from the other side.  You fear he may actually warp or dent the metal on the door.  He slams against it.  And then slams against it again.

The phone begins to ring, and Mitose grabs the receiver and disappears.

X yells out, "Two agents just came through the north door to the warehouse!  You're not alone in there."

Laz is standing by the phone as the receiver falls and begins to hang there.

You hear footsteps from the northern side across two full aisles of shelves.  They will have to walk around the shelves, but that won't take them too long.

Lot stares at his inadequate pistol and grimaces. Xan had unloaded a full auto volley at one of these agents and didnt live to make it this far.  Sure, he put a slug into one just moment earlier but conditions were so drastically in his favor.  Lot watches the way the door buckles from the agents furious pounding, and alot of good it did anyhow.

Lot begins to make slow progress towards the hardline while he aims his pistol where the agents will come around.  Once Laz is clear he reluctantly hangs the phone back on the hook and prepares to make his own exit.

Re: Log 1-11

Laz puts the receiver back on the hook.  Waiting for it to ring again seems to take forever.

The pounding and pushing on the door intensifies as you realize that there is more than one Agent now.

A movement two aisles over alerts you to the presence of the other two Agents.  They are walking around the rows.

The phone rings.  Laz answers and disappears.  The phone drops.  Jade picks it up and replaces it on its hook.

You estimate that the two approaching Agents will round the corner in about 10 seconds once they veer around all the crates and other supplies blocking their way.

The two Agents pounding on the door have pushed it open a crack.  An arm reaches in, trying to swat away at the barrels.  A pistol is in its hand.

T-Minus 16 Seconds to EMP

Roach, Mitose and Laz find themselves back on the Hyperion.  There are klaxons blaring.  The jacks are hastily removed from their heads.  They sit up dizzy and exhausted, but EM Rifles are placed in their hands.

That is when they see the head of a sentinel poking through the hole it just made in the roof of the Hyperion.

Hammer is taking a step back with his own rifle to get a good shot.  X is trying to man the computers with the sentinel just 5 yards away.

Re: Log 1-11

This is just to clarify since I realize my description wasn't really clear.

The warehouse is lined with heavy duty industrial steel shelves about five feet wide fifty feet long and twenty feet high.  They are extremely heavy (about 10,000 pounds) when they are stuffed full of boxes and heavy materials (like they are now).  Crates, barrels, computer and equipment parts, and various miscellaneous items fill the shelves so there is very little room to see through them.[Think of the last scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark.  When I worked for the government, we used these types of shelves in our warehouses.]

The brown rectangles are worktables, which are full of papers and projects.  The two Agents have just come around the northwest corner and are approaching E12.  Jade is standing by the extraction point, and Viper is pushing against the barrels holding the door shut against the Agents pushing on it.  Lot is also standing by the extraction point, ready to take the next call.

Back on the ship, Laz, Mitose and Roach are in the midst of chaos as the sentinel is pushing its way into the computer control room.  They hardly have time to notice the bodies of Grid, Xan, Twitch, and Caine.  Instead, Hammer has handed them EM rifles (the same as used in the movies) and pointed them toward the sentinel.  Jumping from their chairs, they back away and face the machine.

He returns his pistol to his belt and withdraws something else in his fist.  "Jade..." he starts, but lets the rest trail off.  He holds out his arm and hands her his frag grenade.  Enough said, Lot gives her a nod and returns his attnetion to the phone.

T-Minus 13 seconds to EMP
The phone rings.  Lot picks it up and disappears.

Viper hits down and scores a solid hit on the hand with the butt of his weapon.  It withdraws, and he is able to close the door and push the barrels once more against them.  They bang against the door again from the outside, but it will take at least ten seconds or more for them to break through again.

Jade gets her Thompson ready.  Just above the crates, in that open crack, she can see the two Agents approaching.  They both hold pistols.  4 Seconds until they round the corner.

T-Minus 10 seconds to EMP

Back on the ship, tentacles swoop in and attach to the underside of the ceiling, and the sentinel begins to pull itself inside.

There is a loud clunk as the other sentinels outside begin to land on the Hyperion.

Hammer and Roach begin firing at the sentinel.  Mitose unplugs Lot so that he can clear the way and avoid being hit by the sentinel or the EM rays from the rifles.

The sentinel falls back as it is hit...but a tentacle strikes out, hitting X and knocking him from his seat.  X falls from his chair and is stunned on the ground.  Luckily, he was able to push a button before he fell.

The phone begins to ring.

Still very concerned for the others still jacked in, Lot looks to X to see how he is doing with the extractions.  He looks just in time to see X being knocked from his chair.  Lot springs into action and runs across the floor to help X and make sure he is okay.

T-Minus 6 Seconds to EMP
Viper jumps to the phone, his AK-47 clatters to the floor, and he disappears out of the Matrix.  The phone drops and dangles.

The Agents round the corner, and the Thompson roars to life.  The first Agent ducks back, surprisingly agile.  The second Agent is caught off guard, and his body is splattered with bullets.  He falls back out of view from the impact of the bullets.

T-Minus 3 Seconds to EMP

The Sentinel is still active and connected.  It pulls itself back through the hole in the ceiling for a second round.

Hammer, Laz and Roach are ready for it.  The EM Rifles blaze, sending sparks and the sound of an amplifier feedback throughout the computer room, which lights up like a fireworks display.  The sentinel flies back and away from the ship, completely detached.  However, you hear a strange buzzing sound and the clinking of metal on metal.  Then, like a flock of birds, the sentinels descend on the Hyperion--too many to count.

Lot is leaning down to X, who was injured.  X pulls down his keyboard, grunting in pain.  His shoulder is bleeding and bruised.  He begins typing blindly, but he stops for an instant to point to a switch against the wall.  "Flip the EMP!" he yells.  "They'll decimate us."  You know that the switch will set off the EMP.

Mitose pulls the plug from Viper's head as he exits the Matrix.

Re: Log 1-11

Jade puts the phone back on the hook.

The Agents pop out from behind the shelves, pistols blazing.

Jade manages to duck behind the other side of the shelves, but not before a bullet catches her in the...arm.  (6 dmg).

To her left, the other Agents are pushing through the door, banging and thrusting.  One of the barrels falls and rolls down toward her.  Two hands appear in the doorway, attempting to wedge it open.

Jade fires around the corner while still behind cover.  Her firing misses...but the Agents do not approach.

Jade looks anxiously at the phone.

T-Minus 0 Seconds to EMP

On the Hyperion, the sounds of Sentinels breaking open metal is ear piercing.  They have arrived, and the EMP has not been pushed.

A sentinel's head appears in the open hole in the ceiling.

X pushes the "Enter" button.

The Agents to Jade's left break through and the first steps into the aisle 40 feet to her left.  The other two Agents are moving around the shelves.  She is surrounded with no hope.

And then the phone begins to ring.

T-Minus Negative 3 Seconds.  Situation Critical

Jade flies to the phone just as four pistols are raised and pointed at her.  She never hears the sound of firing, but X notices that the hardline is suddenly cut off as the phone is destroyed and that spot is riddled with bullets.

Jade opens her eyes on the chair, her hand immediately going to her arm in memory of her residual image.

T-Minus Negative 5 seconds.  The sounds of the Sentinels are everywhere.

As soon as Jade's eyes open, Lot hits the EMP switch.

There is a flash of bright light, and the engines, computers and other equipment on board suddenly go out.

Fortunately, the sentinel in the hole above you also loses all power.  It slams into the side of the ship and tumbles off.  The sound of falling sentinels around you is like a bucket of marbles being dumped on a tile floor.

Locke is running in from the control room.  "Hammer," he yells in command, "get the engines up and running again.  More of those calamari will be on the way."

Locke looks at Binary's form still plugged into the chair.  "What a god-awful mess this mission turned out to be."

"At least it's over," X says, and the silence around you is comforting as your bodies start to drain away their adrenaline and you begin to calm down.

"It ain't over yet," Locke says.  "Get the ship up and functional again.  Our next mission begins in 30 minutes or as soon as possible before that."

"What?!" X says, still clutching his injured shoulder.

"I'm going to plot a course in.  We have to get to the Fields."

"No," X says in desperation, "not the Fields.  Not in this condition.  We won't make it."

"Just do it," Locke says.  "That's an order."

Locke disappears to the control room to work on getting the ship back up, leaving you alone for the moment.
