Re: Only War!

Baron:
MILL, you're blaming Tyear for all the woes of the RPing industry. Video Games have done more damage than online piracy ever could do. Ever. I imagine Tyear is probably fond of the image of being the lord of all pirates, the epitome of all evil, and the scourge of modern civilization, but somehow I do not think that fits. He suggested downloading a limited release beta either way. It's not like he'll be cutting into any profit margins until the full release comes out.

Now that you're both upset with me, let's cut this out before Flakk gets a chance to see this convo. It will not end well for any of us. He's a scary, scary man...

Oh, I'm not upset with you, but I think you're misunderstanding my comments. I am suggesting that individuals such as Tyear, that either download illegally or advocate/assist in people downloading illegally, are one of the contributing factors of prices for the stuff we all like being so high and we have to put up with DRM, not the sole reason.

Plus, it makes no difference whether it's a limited release or not - it's still a copyright work, he, or others like him, are not licensed to distribute the work, and the content was never free in the first place (though that actually doesn't make a difference to whether you're allowed to distribute it or not - it just makes it worse). The law is pretty clear on what that is called - copyright infringement/piracy. Wrap it up however you like, it is what it is.

I'm also pointing out that what he did, suggesting that another user should pirate the PDF, is in breach of the site rules, and that he should stop not only because it's disrespectful to suggest such a thing in the company of someone who is credited as being a contributor to that PDF, but could also result in the site moderators taking action against him. I might be wrong, but I'd assume he wouldn't want to run the risk of that happening.

Given that flakk has asked us to play nice, and the site mods are keeping an eye out for any suggestions that piracy, or assistance in carrying out piracy, took place on the site in this circumstance, I'm done now.

Re: Only War!

On a side note, you could always use this without legality issues given FFG is hosting it themselves. http://www.fantasyflightgames....al%20(Low%20Res).pdf

Edit: Also, I'm finally glad to see Ogyrn in a game, and can't wait to see if they also have Ratlings too.

Re: Only War!

Just wondering, does the open beta comes with a non disclosure agreement as well?

Re: Only War!

Nope, since it's pretty much impossible to do that for a commercial product.

Re: Only War!

For something you paid for, though? I've never heard of it happening before, since purchasing it allows you to do pretty much whatever you want, within the law, with your book - the actual item is your property at that point, even if the contents are the intellectual property of someone else.

I'd imagine they'll announce it about a month before release - so we're looking at December/January at present, even if they do announce it in the next week or so.

Re: Only War!

Well, now we have the final book - what do people think?

Got my copy and the GM Screen from FFG in the post, and it looks pretty damn nice to me. The fluff and setting sections are very good, I look forward to using the Spinward Marches!

Re: Only War!

Mine will be in the post then as well. Must say that I am curious what they did with the rules after the closed and open beta test!

Good thinking btw doing an open beta test, it should have sorted out even more mistakes then the normal testing would have done.

I might be, yea, but I will probably be too busy with my first exams for my graduate training scheme to start it before February.

Re: Only War!

Hey folks,

First time poster to this discussion group here.

I am VERY interested in playing Only War. I actually made a Wanted—GMs thread about it on the main RPOL forum before I even knew this group was here.

I'm a big fan of the Warhammer 40000 universe and I'm a huge roleplayer and to be honest Only War is the RPG I've been waiting on since they started doing 40k RPGs. Sure, Space Marines are awe-inspiring Angels of Death, the Inquisition is truly potent, and Rogue Traders are Masters of the own destinies, but for me what I've always wanted to try and play was the regular guy, the Imperial Citizen, caught up in things perhaps beyond the realm of his understanding, but certainly beyond the realm of his control. I think maybe that's the best place to find a light in the Grim Darkness of the Future, if there is any to be found at all.

In 40k I think the Imperial Guard provide the perfect way to do that sort of exploration, especially cached as a "War Story." On one-hand you've got the mythology of war--glory, comradery, heroism, sacrifice--and on another you've got the visceral terrible atrocity that it really is. I think the Warhammer 40k Black Library fiction aims to portray this dichotomy in a lot places, but the quality of those works vary considerably. I believe a roleplaying game would be the perfect venue for exploring all of these sorts of themes and telling a truly rich narrative.  So, as I said before, I would really love to play Only War.

You and me both!

Someone started one this week and I am guessing it was first come. I saw the post at work (I work grave) and couldn't so anything about it. Came home and had to sleep, got up and it was full with 7 players. Darn work and sleep!

Very near the same thing happened to me. Except the post was made while I was at work and when I checked when I got home it was already full! Lot of good my Wanted--GMs thread did me. =p

C'est La Vie, I suppose.

Re: Only War!

If anyone is interested, I'm building an XCOM game with Only War as one of the core mechanical aspects.  Humans facing off against impossible odds, heroes in the making, etc.

Should be fun, and thought you folks might be interested.

Re: Only War!

Thank you for the offer, but I'm not particularly familiar with the intricacies of XCOM lore, so I'd probably be a bad fit. Plus, I was always turned off by the fact that its engagement/combat tactics do not at all reflect any sort of realistic military doctrine. You've clearly got Sky Rangers and other craft, how about some close-air support, please?

Re: Only War!

Well, we have a little bit more freedom in RP than we do in a video game :)

We're pulling the guts out of the system as is, been overhauling the Origin Path system for the moment for usage in a lower-powered game with flavor more in keeping with terrestrial military forces.

And hey, Pilot is one of the combat roles right now, so close-air support is entirely a possibility (barring alien interference!).

Playing a pilot might be pretty interesting, either Sky Ranger or Interceptor pilot.

Re: Only War!

Hello All!

I am thinking about running an Only War game using Final Testament. However, I would like some opinions on regiments. Do people prefer helping to make the regiment, or would it be preferable to have the GM make the regiment (especially in a forum game)?

Re: Only War!

Probably best for the GM to roll the regiment.

That way you can, in theory, avoid people complaining that they aren't from their favourite regiment.
