Does anyone know if there is a game on the site that focus on strategy more? Would be really fun if a game let you handle a faction fighting in a sector or alike...

I am thinking of trying my hand at GMing again.  Wondering if anyone has any tips or lessons learned running a play by post Deathwatch game.

Hi all

Put up a GM wanted thread the other day then thought I should post here to.

Just bought wrath and glory and wondered if anyone would be willing to run a game for beginners so I can learn the rules

Anyone running a 4th Edition Warhammer Fantasy Game?

7 cubicle did a very nice job melding the old and new, and the book is really beautiful. It might actually aid pbp with some of the "whiffyness" taken out of the combat system. It could take a weak of NPC's and PC's swinging at each other before a hit in 2nd...

Anyone running a 4th Edition Warhammer Fantasy Game?
I do, probably not for very much longer though as activity has dropped a lot.
All players explicitely 'invited' from people I've played with for a long time before (using 2Ed).
It was set up as a test game to check the rules and is staged in southern Wissenland in Spring 2015IC, using an adventure I had created (and GM'ed in ftf) when 2E had come out (imagine that ^^)
We started on 1st August 2018(first IC post) and are currently at ~800 IC Posts.
The characters started with ~400XP and are now 900XP±100XP (I hand out XP about every 100 Player IC Posts based on ~35% fixed amount, ~35% word count of IC Posts, 20% number of IC Posts and 10% GM Impression. On average that's 80XP per hand-out. Add to that Short Term Ambition Bonuses)
  1. Human, Academic, Physician
  2. Human, Courtier, Duellist
  3. Human, Rogue, Witch
  4. Human, Warrior, Soldier
  5. Human, Warrior, Soldier

Well, as it turned out it was less of a mere test game than an actual story with lots of NPC interaction, puzzling together clues to get the whole picture and demanding investigative work.
As such it was a very 'involved' game, i.e. nothing I would recommend to stage on RPoL unless you really know the players as - let's face the facts - drop-out on RPoL is a true and very regular/frequent pain for GMs.

So, what did I/we actually learn about 4E ?
  • Criticals are decisive.
I had two fights (one vs Orks/Goblins, another versus a Chaos Sorcerer) where a critical that caused a major wound with ongoing test penalties effectively decided the outcome.
As such Critical Deflection is a very essential rule mechanic.
  • Don't mess with too much houseruling.
Seriously, except for adjusting the Hit Location Table and the Fear rules, the rules are pretty well thought through.
If you think you can tweak this or that you will see that the tweak has a lot of implications you did not consider.
I consider myself pretty rules savvy in quite a few systems and even though I generally do not believe in houseruling never before have I seen such intricate interaction between the diverse mechanics.
Just consider an Impale weapon versus a Weak Points, Impenetrateable Armour. Make it a head hit and thus Partial and really go through it all and you will likely be amazed ^^
  • Resolve is plain awesome.
  • Don't use the WFRP2E dice roller, it generates wrong SL
  • Dispelling is plain awesome.
If not for the witch, the chaos sorcerer would have utterly wasted the PCs.
  • For thinking opponents I actually prefer to use normal CharGen

There is plenty going on in the 40k and Fantasy World. Games Workshop teased bringing back the Old World!

As Senior member of the Conclave and beacon of hope for billions of souls in the Calixis Sector please open up the forum to some new blood. Bump Forum we could use some new members meeting old ones. This was once a very very fine chat room and I know its GMs are really cool guys (if still active). Say what you will about me this Forum has plenty of good service and use left in her.

I'm in  two Warhammer fantasy 4ed games on here but I think they're the only two active.

I was hoping wrath and glory would have had a bit of a showing to...I know the editing was crap but it's still a solid game under the hood might pick up when the new edition hits the selves.

I've just joined a 1st ed dark heresy game to not seen too much of that or 2ed lately either

Re: Forum in General

In reply to Croatoan (msg # 923):

It's a question of expectations, though.
In my opinion anyway.

In how many WFRP games would you want to play in?
And what happens to your dedication and committment to a particular game if you are in three or more others?
Are you willing and capable of daily (realistically you can probably only keep up 3-4/w anyway) meaningful posts in four, five, ... games? Emphasis here being on 'meaningful'. I don't consider Mono-Phrase responses game contribution.
Are you willing and capable to follow five, six, ... intricate story-lines / campaign arcs?
And what about the development of the personality (as opposed to a more or less dull accumulation of data, of characteristics, skills and talents on a Character Sheet) and NPC-relations of each of your characters in six, seven, ... games?

Then there is player fluctuation... though I sometimes call it player attrition instead :/. Or simply: Drop-Outs. A derogatory term but unfortunately still an ever-present problem on RPoL. When I use the term Drop-Out I mean those players who just dissappear without a single word to the respective GM.
Anyway, fluctuation is a true pain for any GM who strives to run a campaign (as opposed to a cumulation of separate adventures with neither link to the past or the future and with interchangeable character participation). If you have a player who plays in several WFRP games it is quite possible (in my opinion it is a fact) that she/he will focus on the game that is most pleasing to her/him. Or on a specific character maybe only. Play the Wizard as opposed to the Towsnman. Play the High Elf as opposed to the Human. Though I'm not saying that playing the Human Townsman needs to be boring ^^. Of course, this is a Hobby, not a Job. You do what you want, you spend your time on what you want. So game contribution is also a matter of Supply and Demand ^^. Which is shiny for players but not quite as nice for GMs. The problem here is that the GM's expectations are fairly clear (it takes potential players to read the respective threads, of course) but the players' expectations are unclear most of the time. I personally believe 100% in honesty, which is why I always give lots of feed-back to my GMs. Not always sure if it is appreciated, though ^^. I certainly would appreciate it and I also actively ask for it from time to time.

Then there's the matter jamat has raised: different systems.
Surely everyone's interest goes beyond WFRP (regardless of edition).
I personally like to play (don't find the time to GM more than one game) in other systems / settings, too. Currently in my case it is only circumstances and time contraints that prevent me from indulging in other games.
Still, now we are talking of even more games to put your attention on. You only have that much free time (in whatever way you define it) to put to RPoL.
The more games you are in, the more 'diluted' your contribution to each game is.

Mind, the above 'reservations' not only apply to players but to GMs, too.
If you stage three, four, ... games you are hard pressed to keep them all running. Most of the time you'd likely slip into a 2/week post rate. Do that in combat and you will be hard pressed indeed to keep up suspense. No suspense makes combat a chore and it quickly becomes dull and boring as it essentially becomes a 'hit the dice roller button' issue.

So yeah, I would just love to play in more WFRP4 games (I have moved from 2E, no longer even applying for 2E games). For example: I would love to explore Miracles and Magic. Some spells clearly need explanation, e.g. Breath.
By the time I consider RTJing for a new WFRP4 game though, the respective GM is already drowning in a flood of applications ^^. Which brings us back to the dilemma outlined above: did the players just "pounce" at the new appearing game before reading anything about it to secure a place or do they really intend to stay ?
After more than 10 yers on RPoL I still have not found the right way ^^

Re: Forum in General

deathwatch seems to be the go to for space marine loyalists, if chaos is your flavour then black crusade. To be fair though i have played dark heresy with a space marine in tow, so long as the mortal characters are given xp equivalent to what space marines get as standard then seems fine, in some cases humans can be stronger when optimised in specific routes well. I have never seen to much difference in combat mechanics etc on the surface between any of them, by intent i assume though sure the more hardcore players will know the details better.

Does anyone if there is a game system that would work for world building? I recently played battlefleet Gothic again and became interested to play a game where the players handle a system. Rooting out heresy, rallying forces and such.

Would someone be interested to run such a game? Would be fun if several players were in charged of different appointments and had to argue their case for budget ;)

You could probably run a Rogue Trader lite like this. Since every character is supposed to have a ship position. But you would remove the obvious ship focus.  It would be interesting whatever system is used but I don't think I could run it right now. It could probably be a  awesome 40k card game like diplomacy or illuminati
