Re: Background Stories: Tales of the Yelkanov Clan

"Ah, Ivan Dobyavich Yelkanov! Yes, yes, a good man. A good soldier too. I remember when I first met him, a tall and skinny lad with no beard coming through. 'Course, we soon found out why he was in the 12th Erengrad Kossars. It was our first enounter with the new lads, about fifteen of them there were, specially recommended. We were following an alarm of Norse raiders and just hoped that they'd come back. This was up near troll country, but we had been lucky enough not to have encountered anything.

So we're waiting behind some houses when a reaver ship appears and about thirty norse jump out. Well that's just our luck isn't it! We unleash a volley or two of arrow fire taking out a few here and there then ran in to finish the raiders ourselves. I caught sight of Ivan, that greataxe in his hand. And I saw as he seperated one norseman then crushed the face of another. His height had it's own advantage. We destroyed the norsemen in a matter of minutes, much Vodka drunk afterwards! Still, was a shame he left, he was a good soldier. Pity about his wife."

Re: Background Stories: Tales of the Yelkanov Clan

"Ivan Dobyavich Yelkanov? Sorry, the name doesn't ring a bell. Ah, the tall one with the nose piercing! Ah yes, yes, it's coming back to me now. Sorry, we see alot of faces round here. Yes, Yelkanov did well here. I mean, he wasn't the best, but certainly in the top five of his group for military service. The lads here arrive with nothing normally, but Ivan had that peasant's fury. He was sure he was serving the Tsarina. Sure he was bettering Kislev.

We trained them for a few weeks, standard weapons; Bow, sword, axe. He took to the axe like a natural as I remember. Must have been a lumberjack in his village. Anyway, we took his group, fourty of them on the road to Kislev city. That's the thing with the conscripts, they're very useful for getting rid of banditry.

So we headed down to Kislev and were ambushed. Bandits, but they must have been desperate to attack an armed party. Anyway, a few of the lads didn't have the sense to duck and we lost a few. One of the other lads, I think his name was Semerov rushed out to try and engage them in melee. A few of the lads followed him, Yelkanov being one of them. Well, Yelkanov is six foot something and these bandits were all under that, so they must have shat themselves when this angry peasant with a greataxe came running at them. Put them to flight soon enough, though the lads told me that it was Yelkanov who had broken them. I spoke with him and he wanted to serve, so I had a word with Captain Feremankivh, an old friend of mine from our Kossar days and had him transfered. Why, where's he too these days?"

"Ivan? What do you want to know, hmm? How he took my only daughter from me? How he killed my grandchild? I spit on Ivan. He's a drunkard! An irresponsible drunkard! If he hadn't been at the pub that day, my daughter would still be alive!

Oh sure, he shed tears. Crocodile tears they were! Probably only sentimental from the drink! I rememember he mumbled something about leaving Kislev and I think he has from what I hear. Where he's gone? No idea, but if I see him in Erengrad again he'll be feeling my knife in his gut, Kossar or none!"

Re: Background Stories: Tales of the Yelkanov Clan

"Ivan? Aye, the Kislevian chap! Yea, he was a good investment. I mean, when the odd Gobbo attacked he was quick with a bow, but his real value was on land. Do you have any idea how many merchants up these parts will try and get out of paying full price with some made up excuse like late delivery or damaged good? Any idea how many of them will get a few local toughs to back up their claims?

I'd only need to grab the fella and say to him 'Listen, I'm not going to argue with you or your lads, but do you see that big bastard there? That's Ivan, and he hates not getting his full wage. Kislevian fella see? One of them Kossars. I've seen him put that axe to use and I'd hate him to lose his temper over a few Gelt...'. Worked a trick every time!

Don't think he ever got wise to that. I mean, it'd be hard for him to have been, poor fella could barely string a sentence together in Reikspiel. I usually got one of the lads who knew abit of Kislevian to explain to what needed doing on the ship, but it was alot of guesswork most of the time. Mores the pity the bloody boat capsized. Could have used that Ivan and his axe to give those mermen a bloody good lesson. Oh, didn't I mention? Well, I'm gathering men to hunt the mermen in the Stir and get what remains of me ship back. Care to donate to a worthy cause?"
