I feel bad about this, like I've led you astray with skill challenges. They don't have to be so linear, that is, so long as your contributions to the narrative further the story/scene. Spellcraft or arcana checks don't have to be tied to spells or abilities you have, they can be a bit more abstract. Take hold of the narrative!
What you posted certainly works, but you can also take it further (within reason). For example, you could have briefly described how you bested or defeated the demon and then described the use of a skill to help the three of you escape; or after escaping the demon's charge, described how the situation got worse as a cloud of abyssal stirges swarm the camp after having been disturbed by the battle, followed by a description of how you skillfully dealt with the situation. Or anything, really.
I feel that you are doing fine--and have been doing great; but I also don't want you feeling limited or lost during these encounters. If it helps, I'd like to suggest to you a podcast. It's called Critical Hit, and it's published by the Major Spoilers crew, and I believe it's available on itunes. But I just download them directly from the major spoilers website.

The DM rolls out his version of skill challenges in one of the first episodes; maybe the second or third. I think hearing one play out in real-time might help, and hearing the rules explained instead of reading my attempt at writing... Anyway, I hope you're still having fun!
