Re: The Battle of Turnacum

Seti conducts his “interrogation.”  He calls for the spirits of the recently slain Orcs.  Naturally, they are not too happy about this.  With great effort and force of will, Seti squeezes information out of them.

Seeing Seti occupied, Theoderic has a couple of his men find Melissa, and get her with Scolo.  They are a very "loose catapult" kind of combination, Theoderic knows.. but he can't have that loon wandering around on his own, doing who-knows-what.

It's a job Melissa takes to with a certain appreciation for Scolo's utter freedom of thought.  She just has to keep him from getting killed- and more or less, steer him in the right direction.

The fact that the Orcs are headed for the river worries Theoderic greatly.  The Orcs might be stupid on the individual level, their leaders are not.  They would not race madly towards a river unless... unless they already had a plan for crossing it.

From the Centaur track observation, there were not more than a dozen Orcs that got past and through towards the river.  But then, those might be just the guards for a much larger force.  Either way, they must be stopped quickly, as Theoderic agrees with Titus.

He gathers a troop of light riders, and Titus.  "Forward, then!  We must try to catch them at the river.  They have a plan and we must end it."

He looks to Aelasuria as well.

"Come with us.  There may be magic in this, and if there is, we need you.  On the ground. This is going to be a long day, and we shouldn't use up the magic too quickly."

"You will need me too," Cirrus volunteers.  "I can carry word back faster than anyone, and if Breeze was right I cannot die as easily as I thought I could."

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

"Of course Theo. I had been thinking about going myself already. Hopefully we can put a end to whatever they have in mind." Aelasuria gently caresses Spica's neck speaking softly to her. "Let's use your special nature Spica so hopefully we won't be seen until we wish to be by the orcs." <blue>

Looking to cirrus she raises a cautionary hand. <blue> "We shouldn't assume anything Cirrus. It's true that your original nature is a sylph. We also know some of your sylph abilities are obviously still there. However you also have human traits so I don't wish you to take any truly reckless actions. If nothing else you can still feel Pain Cirrus."

She rides quickly easily keeping pace with the others. Though she did have a unfair advantage with Spica being there for her!

Titus is ready, "This will be a grand opportunity for the Queen's Guard to learn to act together.

He pauses and smiles, "Indeed. It is a fine opportunity for both the King's and the Queen's Guards to learn to work together."

He forms up his command and is ready to depart quite quickly.

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

Rita meets Breeze when Aelasuria calls for her to join the discussion about the Huns and the unnaturally cold weather. She does not hear Breeze's tale of Cirrus' background, as she arrives later, after Breeze's conversation with Cirrus.

If Squijjit is willing, she brings him to the conversation as well.

"Breeze, if you can counter the Huns' cold air with warm air, that may very well neutralize whatever power they are trying to use against us with this cold."

She turns to Squijjit. "If we follow these Huns and fight them near the river, will the River Goddess help us? If there is even a chance, then we should do whatever we can to fight the Hun force near at the river bank.

My spell can soften earth and stone, but it is not as powerful as those that can turn rock to mud,"
she explains to Aelasuria. "I don't know if it will be enough to trip up the iron warriors. If Scolo knows how to disempower the iron warriors, he should do it to whatever extent he can."

Having not heard Breeze's tale, she is somewhat surprised to hear Aelasuria refer to Cirrus as a sylph.

"So you are at least part sylph," she says to Cirrus. "But that doesn't mean you should risk your life by going to battle," she says when Cirrus volunteers to join Theoderic's party in pursuit of the orcs. "You should at least have some magical protection. Perhaps Aelasuria can cast Mage Armor on you.

Do you wish Riordeg and me to come along with you?"
she asks Theoderic as he gathers a group of riders to pursue the orcs.

Eadoin isn't sure he has much to add, in way of words, so he holds himself aside from the general conversation unless someone needs him for something.  Rather than wait, since things seem to be winding up to hunt some Huns, the young Centaur approaches Titus.  "If you're near to ready, sir, I'll put you on their path, maybe get an idea about how many there are."

Unless Titus, or someone else, has reason for him to remain, Eadoin has his folk spread out in clusters along the line of advance, screening the movement.  Meanwhile, he gets serious about tracking the orcs: where they'd come from, how many, what sort of cover they use while covering their movements, where they seem to be headed, how fast they're moving.  All of those things might tell him something about these Huns and how they're led.  Sloppy?  In a hurry?  Wounded and bleeding?  All are things he watches for as he goes.

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

Aelasuria smiles at Titus's words speaking softly. "Eventually Ovo will be back. We will always keep a spot open for him on the queens guard."

Seeing Rita has joined them she takes a moment to greet her warmly. "It's nice to see you again so soon Rita. We were warned that at least one of the river goddesses is tired from a previous battle with a Demon. She's conserving her strength so we shouldn't call on her unless it's of vital importance. Though one of her sisters might be able to help at less cost and risk."

She nods noting the limitations on Rita's magic in regards to creating mud. "If there is enough dirt with a bit of rain it will work itself out. I agree scolo is our greatest hope in defeating the Iron soldiers without great loss of life. He was kind enough to give me a scroll with the magic needed to take them down. It's dangerous to use though by anyone but him. I will keep it in case of emergency."

She looks to Rita then answers her question. "I could Rita the only problem is for each defensive magic I give to Cirrus it's one less that I have for myself in battle. Though it won't be the first time I have used a defensive spell for someone else during a battle. I don't have time to produce a scroll. Though I will if I can. It's best if Cirrus goes that she stay well to the rear where it's safer. We also could outfit her with armor as most messengers in the service of the king especially near a battle would likely wear."

OOC: I am under the impression time is very limited. So I doubt Aelasuria can produce much in the way of scrolls.

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

Seti stands up from his interrogation a little paler than before. He quickly rushes to Titus or Theodoric, whichever is closer, "In short, their mission was to get their shaman to the river, and they have succeeded. He is not far from here, but he is not shaman. He is a demon, 12 feet tall with eyes like those of a giant insect and a long segmented tail. I do not know if he is intending to use the river as a pathway, poison it, or attack some tired spirit, but he is here, and not far. Demons are serious business. Be careful. If you engage, you must let me bolster your defense against their natural fear. Ordinary men cannot face a demon, and their magic is strong - even the bravest may quiver."

He calls Dagnish close and prepares to move out, following whatever orders the king gives. He suspects it will be to slay this beast, but Seti has seen a few demons before and without magic made to slay them, it is nearly impossible. He wishes Bulwyf were here, but this is no time for wishful thinking. It is time to get prepared, for today, some here will likely meet his master.

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

When Melissa arrives, Scolo is cheating at cards. It's not that he's cheating that seems to be of interest to the gaggle present however. It all started when the robe clad fellow with naked knees came riding up on a mule. He asked if any gentlemen present might have any literature for sport or studious reading.
The steel clad scholars present were intently studying the pictures and symbols of their cards, one of them kindly suggested that if the skinny bugger was so keen on reading, perhaps he should read their future specifically the next 5 cards they were going to get.

Hmmmmm

Scolo sat down and did that and played a few hands. At first he won then people were getting mad and as they paid they each one. Through the hand nobody kept anything they had brought in to bet but everyone ended up winning the exact value of what they had brought to the table. It turned a severe high stakes gamble into a raucous freak show with people guessing how he was cheating.

Sometimes it was magic sometimes it was double dealing or even fake cards and others he didn't really cheat but surfed the random chance.

Of course when Melissa arrives its another kind of raucous event as the men react. Edgar flies in too Cooing.

A fighting team eh? And us together?
Mmmm nice, will you be armed even?

Hearing Seti's report puts matters is profound perspective, "Yes... It will be important for you to be with us. Whatever the reason the Demon wanted to get to the river it is important that we stop it.

Turning to Theodoric, "Your Majesty, keep Rita with you and the main body of our army as her spells sound likely to melt the ice and inhibit the Hun force. We shall set off deal with this Demon and return to you once done."

To Eadoin he says, "The Demon will be a greater foe than our men are prepared for. Let us keep them focused on its bodyguard, so that you, me, Seti, and Aelasuria  can slay this creature."

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

* * * * * * *
Seti's revelation that a Demon faces them changes Theoderic's plans, but not by much.

“They know the river will oppose them,” Theoderic says, “That must be what the Demon is for.  To face power with power.  They almost succeeded with Sequanna.  We cannot let them succeed here.”

Theoderic looks around his crew.  His eyes settle on Rita and for a moment, he frowns, then says to Titus:  “I will keep her with us for a little while, but I promised her aid for the Centaurs.  We have few healers, and they are doing all they can for us, it is only right that we aid them in return.  If I took her help away from them, it would not feel right to continue to take the dangerous perimeter positions on our behalf.  But there are not many who have experience facing Demons.  For now, we need her with us.”

The King of the Belgicans and Western Franks takes his horse to the front.

“Whatever this Demon's plans are it must be stopped,” he says.  “But it will be a long day.  This is only the first trial.  We must stop it, but we must not exhaust ourselves.  Cirrus!  Bring word to the Centaurs!  Tell them we will take the river bank, and they must cut off the lines to it, and keep Hun reinforcements from reaching us, or at least slow them down.  Now let's go, and push the Huns and their Demon away from the river!”

* * * * * * *

Cirrus turns to Aelasuria and Rita.  “Good luck,” she says.  “I have my job to do, I hope we are all safe at the end of the day!”

* * * * * * *

One of the Centaurs chosen for the “Queen's Guard”, a young male warrior, asks nervously, “A Demon, Eadoin?  I've never faced one.  How do we do it?”

The guards take up their perimeter positions around Spica and Aelasurial, who is very correct in her observation that there is no time for scroll making.
“This is something,” Spica says.  “We've never had an escort before.”

* * * * * *

Somewhere behind the front line, Melissa grabs Scolo's arm.

“Not up front,” she says.  “Demons are not what you are here for, Iron warriors are.  That's why Theoderic brought you here.  The Demon is only here to clear the path.  They'll come through it.”

She explains, a few moments later.  “They're not stupid.  There is no final magic.  Magic can always defeat other magic.  These iron warriors might be tough but the Huns will bring them out last, so no one has time to work out the magic to counter their magic.”

Seti again attempts to ride with Titus. He hates to leave Dagnish on foot, but it's important that he stay with the vanguard of the attack and close to the king. He says to Titus, "If we should be lucky enough to sight it before entering battle, we should definitely use our preparatory spells. If not, I'll get to them as quickly as possible."

Before they had our, he insist upon casting a quick spell that will help him stay in tune with the status of their commanders, namely Theodoric, Aelasuria, and Rita. He decides to leave Titus out since he intends to travel close by him.

She looks down caressing Spica's neck for a moment as she smiles. "Well technically Ovo has been a escort for us. Though it's true we never had many like this before."

OOC: Aelasuria will wait till the proper time to cast defensive magic like Mage armor.

Titus nods in agreement with the King. He is relieved to have Rita with them, but does not say anything, because he knows that she would probably rather be with the Centaurs. Instead he gives her a sympathetic smile that indicates his regard for her and then focuses on keeping the Queen's Guard appropriately coordinated to best do its job as they move up.

While doing so he hears the Centaur warrior ask Eadoin about how to fight a demon, but does not reply. Instead he lets the young Chieftain speak.

Later when Seti describes his plans he nods again, "I leave you to know when to use your spells, Patre, and we all ride into battle feeling better knowing the Gods are with us in your person."

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

Demon, Seti had said after his conversation with the slain Huns.  One thing the young Centaur has come to expect is that every infernal is different from the others.  He's not yet seen any pattern to them.  Asked about the Demon by one of his own folk, the young Centaur has little experience on which to draw.

"The last one I saw was like a big dead tree, with long branches like a willow," he begins.  Thinking better of it, Eadoin focuses on the practical.  "Our first job isn't to fight the demon.  There are others here better able to do that than us.  We'll focus on the Huns with it, keep them away from Aelasuria and Scolo, Rita and Seti.  We'll make a gap so that others can get to it, and then keep the Huns away from those who go to fight it."

The young Centaur tries to sound more confident than he feels.  The first infernal had been far more entrenched than this one; there had been literally dozens of corrupted creatures and plants surrounding the demon, as much as mile away.  Here, it's the demon and the Huns who're outnumbered.

Still, Eadoin wonders quietly to Titus when the king plans to steal initiative from the Huns again, as he'd done at Turnacum, instead of reacting.  He's anxious, perhaps as much as the rest of his folk.

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

After conferring briefly with Rita, Seti begins his internal concentration. While he has seen a demon and inevitably knows something about them, they are not his specialty. Other sects may have specialist clergy to fight devils and demons, but Lord Pluto takes a more neutral view in general. Before they get separated, as they depart, he repeats an incantation loudly. "Aufero vereor! and he points his staff towards the king and queen.

As they begin to ride along, he speaks quickly to Titus, "I am not much of a fighter, but I hope to enhance those that are. From what I have learned so far, excepting special magical items meant to fight demons, they are highly resistant to both physical damage and magic, although being able to dish out pain commensurate with their size and strength. Last night, I prayed to Lord Pluto for the ability to dismiss such a create to its own home plane, but alone, here in the wilderness, perhaps more on its turf than mine, I can only hope that it should work quickly.  I have read of demons that have an uncanny ability to summon support from the Abyss, although I suspect some portal or special magic may be required. How can I best help you or the king?"

At the battle approaches, Seti quickly cast multiple minor spells to augment the life force of a few allies. "Subvenio," he chants, this time more quietly, "Subvenio," and "Testudo."

2. Will Dagnish be with Seti or left behind due to the lack of a horse?

3. It is obviously critical that Seti properly time these 8-minute duration spells/buffs. I am hoping for kindness from you on that end. The per round spells, I won't start until the battle starts (prayer, sanctuary, etc.)]

Titus smiles in response to Eadoin's question and shrugs as he responds in an equally low voice, "When he has the power or opportunity? Look, Chieftain, do not misunderstand these things. Initiative is taken when it can be, but otherwise we must respond to the enemy's movements and in doing so hope to surprise him. Arguably, having discovered the Demon and making him rather than the army our focus we have already altered matters. Remember, the Emperor is relying on powerful figures like Zerova, this Demon and others to make his army more powerful. In striking as we are and have done in the past several months we diminish his capability not to merely win this war, but survive once it is over."

When Seti soon after also speaks quietly to him Titus responds, "I think if you stay near the Queen and use your powers as you say then you will be doing much. Let the soldiers around you handle the fighting -- we should be giving you spell casters the time and protection to do your work.

"Seti, you have knowledge that most of us do not have -- just telling me what you just did has given me better understanding of what to expect. From your place at the center of things you will be better able to not only cast your spells, but to guide us in the fray, so that we are not tricked or worse pursuing the enemy."

Responding to Titus as they ride, "I will do what I can, but I warn you yet again. Most demons have powerful spell resistance as well as physical resistance. The only time I was forced to engaged one in battle personally, Bulwyf was armed with a sword made specially for fighting demons, and its blade bit deeply, but ordinary weapons will likely have little or no effect and many spells, even from one so powerful as the queen, may have little effect. She likely is familiar with demons as much or more than I am, but from what I've seen, she prefers offensive spells. I trust she will choose them well. I don't mean to pry, but I must ask, I assume the king carries a magic sword, but is it a powerful one - one fit for a king?"

He hangs on tight. He can ride, but not like a mounted warrior. When the battle starts, he plans to disembark. "I think if I am not so lucky no banish this beast, then Theodoric himself stands the best chance to slay it, but he will be at great risk, and I am a priest of death as much as life. Healing is not my specialty, although I have some powers. Mainly, I hope to invoke prayers to the gods. Maybe the river spirit herself will awaken and join us?"

"Your warning is well taken. This is why we shall focus the men on the Orcs rather than the demon itself. The Queen is savvy in the use of her magics not only to damage opponants, but tactically as well, which will be useful even if they cannot harm the Demon directly for some reason. For myself, I am confident that my new blade shall be sufficient  -- one of the great river spirits arranged for me to obtain it, which tells me that it will be very useful in the coming battle, eh? I do not know about Theodoric's, but given what I've heard of some of his previous battles I think it must be. Or perhaps this is just my confident assumption knowing whom he is?

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

“Where is Ovo?” Rita asks when Aelasuria says she expects him back soon. “I’ve been so preoccupied with my own responsibilities that I don’t remember where he went. Is he out scouting?

Do we know which River Goddess is tired from recently battling a demon? Are you referring to the one we helped at the Oise? That was months ago. I don’t know how quickly a River Goddess would recover. Besides, I thought we can only call upon the goddess of the particular river we are near. I don’t know if the goddess of a distant river can send a sister to help out a river that is not either of theirs.”

She looks to Aelasuria, hoping her friend can provide some answers.

Rita understands that Aelasuria needs her magic for the upcoming battle. “It makes sense keeping Cirrus at the rear. I don’t know whether wearing armor would slow her down and mute some of her abilities,” she says.

She listens in horror as Seti reports their enemy is an insect-like giant demon who may very well have shaman powers. How many demons are in this world now, she wonders. For every one they kill, several more seem to appear.

“Is it the spirit of this River who is tired?” she asks Seti. “And should we expect the demon to be a spellcaster, some sort of demon shaman?

A demon like that almost certainly can be hit only by magical weapons. We should make sure to enchant the weapons anyone planning to fight will use, if they are not already enchanted. If Dagnish can fight like Vagrenk, we should put him on a horse and bring him along. Vagrenk played a critical role in killing such creatures. When I cast a strength spell on him, he was even more powerful. If we can get Dagnish a magical weapon, I can cast the strength spell on him.

Do we expect the iron warriors to be there as well? Are we going to have to fight them and a demon at the same time?”

“The demon’s bodyguard could very well be another demon,” she thinks out loud. Then Melissa shows up.

“Do you know anything of this creature, what it can do and what its weaknesses are? If you do, please share that knowledge with us, as it will be of tremendous help.”

If Theoderic’s group is battling a demon, she should be there, Rita thinks to herself. But before she can say anything, Titus speaks up, recommending Theoderic bring her along.

“What about Riordeg?” she asks the group, suddenly fearful of leaving him. “Is he to stay with the centaurs? If he is, please, at least let me say goodbye to him before we go,” she asks.

She doesn’t really want to be separated from Riordeg at a time like this. The only reason she had come over to this group to begin with was to discuss the unnaturally cold weather. It was supposed to be a quick trip, then back to Riordeg and the centaurs.

“And Squijjit—should he come with us? The last thing I want to do is risk his life. Perhaps he could head to the river unseen and there ask the River Goddess for help,” she recommends.

Rita realizes Seti has access to spells more powerful than her own.

Titus’ mention of Zerova only adds to the horror.

“Might Zerova be there as well? Are we even capable of fighting both her and this demon at the same time?” she asks the group.

I'm scaring everyone with all these worst case scenarios, she realizes. They might pick up on her fears, and that would weaken their own motivation. She tries to dismiss the growing fears from her mind, focusing instead on the Lord and Lady she serves.

"Lord Pluto and Lady Proserpina, please be with us in this fight," she prays aloud.

Titus lets Theodoric respond to Rita's request to see Riordeg, but given that the Centaurs were already detached it seemed unlikely that she would be able to speak to him. When she suddenly asked about the likelihood of Zerova's presence he became worried. Perhaps the young Priestess is not prepared for this after all? She seem to be jumping at every shadow.

He makes a point of saying to her in a loud, calm, confident voice, "I assure you Priestess that I saw Zerova's destruction with my own eyes. She has been sent back to her own plane and those I have spoken to about it have assured me that it is unlikely that her Demon-goddess mother will permit her to retun any time soon given the completeness of her failure.

Zerova has been defeated? Rita is shocked, as this is the first she has heard of the news.

"Zerova has been destroyed?" she asks incredulously. "I had no idea! That is incredible news. And you witnessesed it!

She was quite a powerful witch. Many suspected she was part demonic, but the daughter of a demon goddess! No wonder she lived so long. My grandmother spent her life fighting her, and now she can finally rest, knowing her nemesis is gone from this world. Thank the gods!

Was anything learned from Zerova's defeat that might be useful against this demon?"
she asks the group, wondering how many people already knew Zerova was gone.

The news definitely boosts her confidence level. If Zerova can be destroyed, so can this creature. While she wants to hear every detail about the battle and how long ago it took place, now is not the time.

"This news strengthens our reasons to hope. Her loss had to be a blow to the emperor. We know we can defeat powerful evil, and at the same time, we know she will not be in this upcoming battle."

Rita quietly says a brief prayer of gratitude thanking the gods for this victory.

Aelasuria glances at Seti as the topic of a sword came up. She had mentioned it to Theo as well although for slightly different reasons. His sword was indeed magical she just wasn't certain it was the right magical sword for him. she knew the Demon might be able to resist her magic as well. She prayed that it couldn't because if it could most ordinary weapons probably would be useless as well.

"No he left to take care of a mission that required his abilities. Though I am not sure where he is right now nor when he will return. Though I hope it is soon as I do miss Ovo."

She nods speaking softly. "I don't think it would mute most of her abilities which are untapped. Although it would make her weigh more which will slow her down. So she would have to chose between riding as fast as possible and protection. I think Cirrus can control the winds once she learns how to tap her abilities more fully. Winds could be used to deflect arrows possibly even knock a full grown man flying.  Neither of those abilities would be stopped by armor. Flight however if possible for her could be dependent on wearing a little as possible to keep her weight to a absolute minimum. Keep in mind that's all speculation Rita you shouldn't expect anything of Cirrus."

Aelasuria shakes her head slightly feeling that they wouldn't be there. At least she hopes not as that would be quite the handful.  "Theo thinks that the Iron soldiers will be unleashed at the last second. They don't want to give us any opportunities to deal with them. It's possible they might have a counter magic to protect the Iron soldiers. So we must have people ready to try to stop their spell casters. If they do show up it will be Scolo's duty to deal with them supported by whoever we can spare to help him."

She looks surprised when Rita brings up Zerova. "Wait isn't Zerova Dead Rita? I thought someone had defeated her already." She wasn't sure though she could swear someone had brought up that topic somewhere in the past.

"Once we see the Demon I might be able to determine a weakness for it. So could Scolo if he knows what type of demon it is. Some are especially resistant to fire, lighting, ice, and or acid. While others are not so once you know what to hit it with you focus on that."

She nods at Titus confirmation that Zerova had fallen. A defeat the Huns probably resented no doubt. "We will do our best Rita. Let's hand the Huns another Defeat. I am hopping with enough of them they will turn on their own Emperor. IF he's killed it could spell the beginning of the end of their empire."

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

All business as usual, Seti replies to Rita affirmatively. "It sounds like you're on the right track Protection From Evil would be very helpful, yet another spell I have not mastered. We should focus protecting the king and queen, but I have done what can be done to aid their resistance to fear spells, and a general war prayer will provide some benefit to all nearby, as well as harm to our enemies. Beyond that, I think a good deal of faith is in order. Bless you, child, and be strong."

Re: The Battle of Turnacum

Scolo knows all sorts of strange things about the other worlds and the strange beings that live there.  From what he hears of this demon... he knows he needs to hear more.  Scolo knows of a dozen or more demonic forms that could be described as insect like.  Most aren't the major demons, but then...

Seti and Dagnish aren't mounted, but can hurry to follow up behind the lead group if they want to, because Theoderic will only order the horses into a run once the enemy is in sight.  No need to waste their strength.

The Centaurs are formed up around Spica and Aelasuria.   The unicorn quickly recognizes there is an issue she hadn't thought of.  These Centaurs are much bigger than Eadoin and Spica cannot see over them.   "Aelasuria, you will have to see for me,"  Spica says.

Theoderic takes the lead, directing horsemen to the flanks, and the move forward at a trot, following the bank of the Sambre.
