Twas months ago, when a Dwarven cleric had the idea… perhaps a prophecy… that since the Demon plaguing the Dwarven Kingdom had tailored its attack uniquely for the Dwarfs, in effect creating a Dwarf-proof trap, that victory could be found by switching foes: the Dwarves would send a troop of crack warriors against the Huns attacking the Elves, and presumably, the grateful Elves would send help to deal with the terrible Mastiphal.
And maybe, a prophecy it was…
The Warbeast is a living weapon well adapted for defeating the Elves in their forest. It can rip through the barriers and traps the Elves usually use. Its sheer size and strength allows it to overcome most Elven attacks, which are built around speed and precision more than brute force. From it’s back, Orc warriors can attack the tree villages. And the creatures are protected from many of the spells Elves use.
But they have problems with heavy fortifications. That wasn’t an issue, because the Elves usually don’t create heavy fortifications.
And now, there are Dwarves in the Ardennes, with heavy fortifications. To make it worse for the warbeasts, on the east and south sides, the fortress is approached from a slope. The warbeasts aren’t the most agile of creatures, and they find steep slopes difficult. The giant logs used to create the fort are much heavier than thin walls, and the warbeasts cannot push them back or knock them down.
True, the “Log Fortress” isn’t as neat as normal fortresses built of masonry. The junctions between logs are plugged in a clumsy, haphazard way, or are just left open to allow movement. If the Huns had led with a large infantry force, covered from rear with siege weapons, they might be breaching the gaps. Had they expected to assault a Dwarf fortress, they might have equipped themselves for that.
It’s quite possible that left to themselves the warbeasts could never actually get in the fortress. At least not until they got around the back side where the terrain was more level. But Dunduin, Arctos, and Heolstor are determined not to let that happen.
Arctos drops down from the Log and attacks, inspiring and leading a troop of Dwarves behind him. Not really built for climbing up onto it, the Dwarves do what seems natural- attack from beneath.
It's gory work, Arctos soon discovers, as he spears one beast with his Agnon in the belly. Not unlike stabbing a huge, undercooked lasagna from below.
At the same time, Heolstor attacks from above- and so do some of the Lycanthrope warriors on the other side of the Albach.
At the crossing, the Entangle spell has reduced the usable area of the ford, creating a bottleneck. The Orcs advance into arrows and crossbow bolts. Some of them regroup, and prepare to rush a weak spot in the log fortress.
Meanwhile…
Demus sneaks towards the Hun archer and ballistas on the hill. Sneakery ends with his first fireball- that’s very obvious. Orcs know when they’ve been spelled, and their immediate reaction is typically “kill the wizard!”
This is what the winged worgs on the north side were waiting for. They swoop towards Demus. For the Elves back at the log fortress, shooting at them is tricky. But they pass over Brannoc and Callidus in the process, and one is brought down with well placed arrows. The other zeroes in on Callidus like a giant flaming missile.
Brannoc and others move into position, covered by the sudden commotion raised by Demus. The Elves prepare to attack the hilltop position, and then… they see movement to the north. For a moment, they think they’ve gone into a trap, and then they see… it’s more Elves! Lots of them!
Petra duels with the remaining flying worg. The Worg can break and bank, but it can’t match Hermod’s speed. Hermod realizes this, and also understands that the Worg can hurt it if it doesn’t get to close.
So it doesn’t let the worg get in close. It uses sheer speed to pull away, in sudden bursts, whenever the Worg is closing.
Hermod hopes Petra will hang on. Using the staff is tricky when she needs both hands to keep stable through the winged horse’s sudden accelerations.
Also, Hermod hopes Petra has a strong stomach. This would not be a good time for air sickness. But if he can get a good position just for a few moments… allow Petra to use that staff again…
