The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

There are two courtyards in the palace, created at two different times in the building's history, when wings were added to enclose the spaces.  At times, they have been flower gardens, kitchen gardens, lawns, exercise areas... a variety of uses, depending on the whims and personalities of the rulers of the time.

Before Barstow, Groscius the Usurper had merely let them go wild.  The Werewolf had no need for gardens.  And Barstow, though of entirely different temperment, has so far been inclined to keep them that way.  In his view, it's nice to look out on some natural green.   Of course, “natural green” is visible from many points in the palace, including the new “Alzette Wing” where the Duke and Duchess now have their quarters, so some suspect it's just because they don't want to bother with planning other uses for the courtyards.

The wing between the two gardens is called the Beolas Wing for the Werebear Duke who added it.  It was the first wing of the palace that was entirely secluded, facing away from public areas, and served the Dukes as quiet, private quarters.  It was the first wing added primarily for comfort.   The ground floor has several large “day salons” and two of them have been joined, incorporating the passageway between them, so that there is now one large room with garden- now more of a young forest- on either side.

Now, it becomes a refuge for Unicorns- creatures of peace and serenity that have a hard time with busy, noisy crowds.

Some magic of the Unicorns takes over here quickly- even though it is the heart of winter, a burst of life seems to move through the gardens.  The snow sparkles like crystal, and the Unicorns leave no hoof prints.  There are birds, and those plants that keep their greenery, like the Holly bush, seem especially lush.

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

It takes a while for Aelausuria to pin down Theoderic.  She’s picked up a tail like that of a comet.  Cirostis insists on following her, and Ovo too, when they pass near the palace.  And, of course, several friends and sisters from home, who haven’t seen Aelasuria in months and find the idea that Dwarves insist on protecting her to be a little bit strange.

She catches up with him in the gardens of the palace, where the Unicorns have moved in.  He’s talking to a few of them.

Aelasuria’s sisters and friends stop and staire.  There are Unicorns here!  Not just one!  NINE of them!

Theoderic understands her concern when she tells him about the bounty, and the possibility of an assassination attempt, but he doesn’t seem worried.

“We’ve always been in danger,” he says.  “Until the Huns are gone, we always will be.  Here, we are among more friends and allies than anywhere else.  Barstow and Texxor are two of the greatest fighters alive, we have a Dwarven Army, Elves, Centaurs…

“And you need fear no poison,” Marisol says.  “We will always be near, and you know the powers we have.”

“If the Emperor wants to try here, he will be attacking when we are at our strongest.”

“We’ll be on our guard,” Aelasuria’s friend Kalellia says.

“But we can do something, we could move the wedding location,” Theoderic suggests.

Procyon, oldest of the Unicorns here, steps forward.  He disagrees.  “No.  You must not be afraid.  Even in danger.  You have faced worse, do not back away in so public a view.  The people must see that you are not afraid.”

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

When Ovo joins Cirostis shakes clasps his arm in friendly greeting.

Cirostis remains with the lady and listens to the dismissal by her groom.

I'm sorry Sir, please excuse me, I am but one of that Army of Dwarves ... Will you be arranging new security based on this intelligence? It seems to me that this is not a threat armies are made to defend against. Striking while we appear strong with one or a few who are dedicated could succeed in killing or just maiming one of you. That will be enough for victory. Under threat of ruffling your feathers if I may be frank - I recommend neither of you be with fewer than three armed and trusted friends - and that you both choose to remain back if any confrontation develops.

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

Hurrying to Theo she hugs  him laying her head against his chest for a few long moments. Perhaps it was silly but she couldn't help but worry about him. He had many good qualities being wise for his age, strong, kind and a good fighter he might be. Still she had been afraid for him. Smiling she takes great comfort in being in his arms feeling a weight lift from her heart.

"Your right Theo this is probably the safest place we could be right now. I also agree with Procyon we can't let the people suffer thinking that all our victories are for nought that we would flee at the mere thought that the Huns come for us. If we have to run none of them will be able to feel safe in their own homes. However I agree with Cirostis the Huns and their allies the blackguards are very good at getting past defenses. They armed one of their blackguards with a dagger that very well might have been custom made for me Theo or Scolo since it was designed specifically to slay a wielder of magic by bypassing our usual magical defenses like mage armor. We should not underestimate them."

She looks to Kyriel who is likely already here, Cirostis, and Ovo all whom get a nod of recognition a smile and a look of appreciation. "Kyriel has come a long way and stayed at my side. She would be one, Ovo is a solid fighter who would be two, and I think it would be wise to have strong magic both for healing and against evil readily on hand. Perhaps Rita would make a third that should stay with us at all times. However I am perfectly fine if we had a dozen more particularly during the wedding ceremony. We might not have the luxury to stand back Cirostis and I am afraid I would have to use my magic to aid someone protecting me. Theo risks his life in every battle right alongside the army as do I when we have fought demons in the past. We will be careful although I think we both agree we do not wish to let someone protecting us die if we can do something about it.

However there were other things that needed addressing. She soon hugs Marisol Caressing her belly and kissing her neck. She wondered if she would feel the child kick! "It's been far to long Marisol. How long till you have your child or have you already?" She doubted it because she couldn't see Marisol leaving her baby for any reason. However if she had and the child was here she definitely looks for the very young Unicorn. She takes the time to introduce her sisters and others to the Unicorns and Theo. "Everyone, my sisters, this is Marisol my Unicorn companion and her love Procyon. This one here is Spica also my Unicorn companion since Marisol became with child. I think almost everyone knows Theo, King Theoderic. Theo this is Cirostis who has helped to protect me since he found out about the Hun threat. Kyriel I believe you have already met."

She looks to Kyriel with a smiles speaking softly to her. "Kyriel would you like to be one of my Bridesmaids?" She smiles and takes Kalellia's hand giving it a affectionate squeeze. "You as well Kalellia would you be one of my bridesmaids."

Aelasuria realizes she has overlooked someone important. "Theo, Marisol, Spica everyone. This is Bryon a wizardess and her Familiar Scrumff. She has a magical ability that apparently can make her look like anyone she wants. I think for about six hours? She has offered to make herself look like me in order to draw out those who plan to kill me or Theo. I am not comfortable letting someone take my place. I don't want to put her in danger."

"However I thought it best to share what she wishes with you Theo to see how you feel about it. As well as hearing how Kyriel feels on the matter. IF you all agree it's a good plan I will accept it but I want everything possible done to ensure her safety if we go that way. I would never forgive myself if Bryon came to harm. I would rather face this together with Theo at my side."
Aelasuria had to share how she felt however she wouldn't outright reject it either without consulting with Theo.

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

Upon emtering the garden Bryon laughed "Im sure Scrumff isn't a were. If he were he would have changed and had his way with me by now."

There were unicorns. Bryon had seen one or two but never so many. It was dazzling. She wandered a bit bieng friendly with one if it would allow. When introduced she gives a deep curtsie and bows her head out of respect for his station. She holds up a finger though as to correct. "While my powers are magical in nature I am no wizard. I owe my abilities to both my parent's  bloodlines. Fey intermingle with both sides of my family frequently and so my soul is wound round with chaos. I was tutored in the use of these powers by an uncle who happens to be a rather randy Satyr. I also know that Infernals have given twisted versions of my gifts to their own servants."

She pauses collecting her thoughts. "Like many of my people I have a spirit guardian. Scrumff perfers not to be called a familiar...he thinks I am his woman...though he shares." She winks again at the shy Dwarf enjoying his discomfort.

"I wear armor the lighter stuff does not interfear with my powers. Also I share a bit of my Fey ancestors toughness in that most weapons do less damage than they should. So you see I am the perfect choice for this charade. Also it will make picking her dress easier.

Well I .... Cirostis starts to get upset but thinks better of it ... Then calmly and with good manners he says.

I'm taken Madame - and rumors to the contrary could hurt more than barbs.

He coughs his way to a more appropriate posture.

Excuse me, your majesty. Fighting in the front of battle does much to build morale. But being known for it is a weakness. Morale is lost if your habits are used to kill you. Others will fail to follow your example when they see you rewarded with terror.

Change is good - even among dwarves. You see my Centurion - sometimes he is at the front, sometimes directing from the rear or managing artillery or caring for the wounded. Looked for - he will not be found by an enemy that is, but all his soldiers know him.

There is a time to let your people support you and take risks. That also builds morale.

He nods sidelong toward the, Lady Bryon who has teased him.

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

Kyriel nods when King Theoderic mentions that they've been in danger before, but she doesn't smile. "Your majesty is correct. You won't be safe until the hun are no more. I'm not sure changing the venue will be helpful. It will alert any assassins that you are aware of their presence and they will take extra care in their attempts."

She grins when Cirostis makes his observation. "I agree with you, sir. There is a time for armies and straight up fights and then there is a time for shadows and flashing knives. This is the latter."

Hearing Aelasuria's ideas about bodyguards is good. "The obvious guards should be mostly for show. You'll want your best to be in places where they won't be expected."

The presence of so many unicorns takes her breath away; she's seen a few of them before, but never so many! "How are you Marisol?"

Then Aelasuria does something completely unexpected and offers to make her a bridesmaid. For a few moments she's completely at a loss for words. It's a great honor, but she works best away from the limelight. Though if there is an attack during the wedding, she'll be in a position to try to fend it off. All these thoughts and dozens like them flit through her brain. One last thought is she's disappointed that Terrance couldn't be here to see her. She curtseys; her decision made. "Thank you Aelasuria. It's an honor. I'll do my best to serve you well."

She eyes the new woman with some fey powers. She hopes this newcomer is as well-intentioned as she seems. However, since she arrived with the elves, that does give her a lot of credit in Kyriel's eyes. The comment about infernals giving abilities similar to hers is interesting and more than a little troubling. "Can you tell if anyone near you is under a similar effect?"

She has to grin when Cirostis adroitly deflects Bryon's attentions. "One thing you'll have to be careful of is to stay in character. Aelasuria isn't known for her wandering eye. . . ."

And she certain has to agree with Cirostis' observation about morale.

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

Bryon smiles at the Dwarf with a pert sort of tolerance saying, "Too bad I had such splendid things in mind for you.  Perhaps one of the comrades you spoke of is not taken?" In any event she has his attention, which was all she really wanted anyway.

Another elf stepped up and spoke. Kyriel it seemed was a good friend of the future Queen so much so she is offered a place alongside her, a real honor. Bryon listened and answered her as best she could. "Unfortunately no that is beyond my power, though I understand a wizard can sense this as any other magic. Sensing magic is not an ability I possess."

At Kyriel's last comment Scrumff chitters "She really is smitten anyone can see that. You would have your work cut out for you."

Bryon laughes. "With your permission, Lady Aelasuria and your highness."

She slides in next to the King making lover's  eyes and taking his hand. Everything about her demenour screams "Woman In Love" from the tilt of her head to her shy smile. If she did not look like herself one might swear she was the future Queen. As quickly as it appeared it vanishes and she becomes herself again. "Perhaps you will agree Kyriel that hiding in plain sight can be as effective as disappearing into shadows?"

She disengages herself from the King politely. She clearly is not interested in men who are taken but is so good at faking it one would be hard pressed to see the difference when she chooses to put that face on.

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

The Unicorns seem to vanish within the tight confines of the garden- all but Marisol and Procyon.

“Kyriel..." Marisol says hesitantly, "I am well, but the Garden was meant to be a private place for us.  It is becoming crowded.  Must so many be here?"

The comment is clearly directed at Byron and Cirostis as well as Kyriel- Theoderic and Aelasuria are readily welcomed.  It is not that the Unicorns harbor any hostility to anyone else... but they are known to be shy creatures.  They look at Cirostis with a little curiosity.  The Unicorns were aware that Aelasuria had a Dwarf guarding her... although, did she somehow switch Dwarves along the way?  The Unicorns are not quite sure.  They don't know many Dwarves and to a degree they all look alike- short, wide, hairy, and encased in metal.

(And Haakon was clearly in the wrong thread.  He is supposed to be in Meetings in the Palace.)

Procyon, who appears to be "head Unicorn", says diplomatically, "We are not accustomed to attention, and after our trials we need a respite.  There is a lounge in the building, there, alongside the garden.  It is a better place to speak."

Theoderic takes Aelasuria's hand, and as they walk in the direction Procyon suggested, gives Byron a puzzled look and asks "Who are you?"

He also stops one of the castle servants, and young boy hurrying by.  He's a Wererat, from the look of his ears and tail.  Theoderic tells him to find Texxor or Mergyon, and tell them Theoderic recommends a little tighter control on entry into the palace gardens.  No one wants stressed out Unicorns.

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

Cirostis remains silent and near Aelessuria. He is sure one or two of the lads would gladly provide for the uh Lady Byron's appetites and they would make a proud showing for dwarves everywhere but it was not his place to make mention of such things - it was actually his place to meet out discipline when such events would occasionally go awry.

To the Unicorns he also feels it best to say nothing when nothing is said to him. He had just gotten used to his pony and saddle - the idea of giant talking magical ponys with sharp horns was not very comfortable to him, and he wasn't here to aggravate anyone or get any attention. He just wants to support the lady to get her security detail in order.

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

Aelasuria blushes slightly thinking her mother would have a hard time making Bryon blush with her sense of humor. Listening to her she found it very interesting that Bryon was likely at least half fey. Apparently the bloodlines had been mixing for generations. Although she wasn't pure fey or she would likely happily be living with them with no need for the world of men, dwarves, and elves. "I have met some fey although I have not met a Satyr." With the reputation Satyr's typically had Bryon's description is likely perfectly accurate.

She raises a eyebrow at the thought that infernals were giving similar powers to mortals. That Bryon knew this was a interesting little detail. Infernals often tempted mortals with a variety of gifts power being one of them. "I take it you have had the misfortune of having to fight such a infernally gifted mortal."

Bryon I appreciate the offer, however I would prefer it if no one else wears my wedding dress. She smiles at Cirostis looking at Theo. "It's strategy Theo to try to make the leader harder to find or reach. Varying  how you do things so that you are essentially unpredictable. Takes a bit of effort though as it's easy to fall into old habits."

Smiling at Kyriel she briefly takes her hand giving it a gentle squeeze. "Your welcome Kyriel. I know you will do well. She nods slightly looking at Scrumff. "I am guessing Scrumff will be able to stay hidden. IF we try this though there is also the problem of what to do with me? I can't exactly walk around freely if Bryon looks like me."

Seeing what has happened with the Unicorns Aelasuria nods slightly with a look of understanding.  "It's best that we go now. We can talk elsewhere as Marisol and Procyon has so kindly suggested."

She walks gracefully and quickly with Theo one hand in Theo's as they  make their way over to the building. "She came with my family and King Davanos of Geneva. I haven't met her before today Theo." Just in case she mentions her name again. "Her name is Bryon. I think now that we know the threat is here we can let those who desire is to protect do what they do best. I am guessing they will travel wherever I do from now on. Well at least until the immediate threat is over or we leave Lucimburic as all might not follow the same path."

Kyriel grins at this new person and nods in satisfaction. "Yes, sometimes it pays to hide in plain sight. I don't have your skills at disguise, so I have to rely on more mundane methods of avoiding attention."

Marisol and the other unicorns make their point about the number of people present. "Forgive me, but my job is to help protect Aelasuria and King Theoderic. I didn't know that we would be coming here and disturb you." She backs off a little way to give the unicorns some breathing room.

When Aelasuria takes her hands, she smiles fleetingly. This will probably be the hardest assignment she's had to date. Normally she collects information as a lowly servant, now she'll have to play up the appearance of youth even more.

Once they get into the building, she settles next to Aelasuria. "Your majesty, I'm not certain what you know of the current situation. Do you want me to brief you on what we learned on our trek back to the Academy after defeating Zerova?"

Even here in relative safety, she's alert and is wound as tightly as spring, ready to act in the defense of either Aelasuria or King Theoderic. Trusting her eyes and ears in such occasions has saved her more than once. Now she hopes to put them to use and make sure that nothing happens to Aelasuria and the king.

"I think the best way to proceed is to continue with the plans as they've been laid. However, I recommend that the duke employ whatever counter espionage forces he has to their fullest potential. I will do my best to scout the crowd and act as body guard."

Bryon tried to explain better whom she was. "Majesty I am Bryon Lurvaix of Losana in Helvectia. My parents are Pelius and Simone' Lurvaix considered Nobles by outsiders but Celts are notoriously independant and so they sit on the city councel of elders. We Celts do much differently than your people."

She shrugges at the future Queen's decision on the dress. She tried to answer her addition question. "My ability alters the other person's  features to make them unrecognizable as well. I have encoutered one so changed by infernal powers and his powers were much less subtle than my own. Perhaps a product of the power's  origins. In any case my powers are at your disposal." She says all this while following them indoors.

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

There is a large open sitting room just to the side of the garden.  It’s been adapted for the “hoofed guests” to come and go, and is open to the garden.

They find a trio of Hybsils sitting on a carpet, admiring paintings on the wall.

”It’s an amazing thing,” Theoderic says, referring to the centaur-like folk who seem part sprite, part deer.  “I hadn’t even thought such creatures existed.  I think the army which has gathered around me now includes every civilized race.  Except the Dragons, of course.  I suppose we are a Dragon short of having representatives of everything.”

”That alone is an accomplishment,” Procyon says.  Despite the Unicorn’s instinctive shyness, Procyon’s sense of duty compelled him to stay with the group.  “There is meaning in that,” the Unicorn says.

He looks at Byron.  "And your magic sounds intriguing as well.  At the moment... we shouldn't make anyone unrecognizable.  There would be misunderstandings.  And despite the warnings, we have nothing reliable yet that can tell us about a threat- only that there is a bounty on our heads.  I am not the first king to have enemies.  It is the nature of the position."

He listens to Kyriel's report, but is not yet ready to make any decisions based on it.

"Hello, I am Aelasuria, this is King Theoderic, Kyriel, Bryon, Cirostis and you have probably already met Procyon." She thought it only polite to greet the Hybsils who were already present and enjoying the paintings.

"Please go ahead Kyriel." She knew Theo could use whatever helpful information he could get. Once the information is shared she nods agreeing with Kyriel and Theo. "Yes we should go about our lives. Do what we need to do and move on. As long as we are alert and people are ready we are doing what we can. Theo I did some shopping and I think some of the were-rat stalls had some rather intriguing items. One such was a magical cube that enables transportation to other places. One side is already attuned to Lucimburic. I plan on hopefully atuning other sides to places like Geniva and Ravinicum if possible. It also leads to at least one muddy city according to the Were-Rats. I wouldn't be surprised if that is where they got some of their treasure. There was also a interesting wand amoungst other things."

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

Kyriel briefs King Theoderic on what she knows. "I suspect that the wedding and the celebration around it would be the best time for some of the emperor's agents to make their move. First, you're in a city that you don't really know. While the duke and his men may know the lay of the land, you and Aelasuria don't.

Many, many people are here. Far more than normal. It will be easier to get in and move around.

This would be the best time for them to act. The defeat here has given the emperor a black eye. In order to keep the appearance of strength, he'll need to act against you. And he'll need to act soon. If they are able to find a way to hurt you or Aelasuria here, that would show that they're still a force to be reckoned with. It will undo most, if not all, of the gains that were made here recently.

I think we've seen signs that someone is here already. Ali'Cor and I fought a weird heyna-vulture hybrid on the roof of the Duke's palace. Something like that, here, now? That bodes ill, if you ask me.

I spoke with the Duke and General Texxor about security."

Kyriel turns to Aelasuria. "I'll need a dress that will match yours, but I'll need to be able to slip out of it easily. I'll also need a couple of hand crossbows."

Aelasuria listens to Cirostis and Kyriel in turn nodding slightly.   "Thank you Cirostis. I would be honored to have a dozen or even two dozen of your fine Dwarven warriors helping to support Lucimburics soldiers in ensuring that the wedding is safe. I think the Mergyon, and Duke Bastow have likely assigned people to Myself and Theo. Kyriel will also be close to make certain I am well. Rista as well as Ovo will be more obvious guards for myself and probably Theo. Bryon I suspect will be able to blend in and be less obvious like Kyriel if the two wish to work together."

"That isn't counting any werefolk that are assigned to see to our safety. Perhaps a Were-Weasel, Were-Bear, or even a Were-Wolf depending on what the duke and Mergyon have in mind. I suspect there will be a variety of spell in place to detect evil as one basic example. Again thank you for coming Cirostis. I truly hope your business deals here in Lucimburic meet with great success."

Turning her attention to Kyriel she nods with a smile. "Of course Kyriel anything you need. My parents brought a lovely blue silk dress of elvish design. I am sure we can have something very similar ready for you."

OOC: Could be a good opportunity for Tawna the Were-Weasel to improve her peoples standings yet again.

But you see I have to swap. I could do it to someone unwilling but then that makes things way too complicated. I'd perfer to find someone willing. Anyhow, as I said I will do what I can. Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

Since the signing of the Emperor’s Peace Treaty- more accurately, since word had started to get around that Theoderic hadn’t signed it- his role in the world had changed.

He was the prince.. .now the king.. who had refused the Emperor.  Without any planning on his part, he became the center for a people who were drawn to them like winds into a vortex.  A third of the Human troops he led at Namaco were warriors who had left their homes elsewhere, mostly Gaul, for nothing more than a chance to strike back at the Huns.  They came to him because they had heard:  Theoderic is fighting the Huns.  The opportunity was all they asked.

He was almost getting used to people showing up, seemingly at random, and offering their services.  Almost.  Theoderic did not put a low value on people.  He had to know that Byron understood what she was getting into.

"Why are you putting your powers at our disposal, Byron?" he asks.  "I don't want to disrespect you... but you must know what you would be getting in to.  Quite a few have died in my service.  You're from the Helvetica.. that's on the other side of Burgundy, the Huns have never been a threat there.  Here, there is no glamour, no glory, and I can't offer more than sustenance in pay right now.  It has been a rushed and wearying war, so far, and it will go on.  What is it your are looking for with me?"

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

Aelasuria had to admit Theo had a point usually someone committed to a dangerous course because of a good reason whatever it might be. Some would do it for gold, others because their homeland, family and lively hoods were threatened, rarer still others because they felt it was right, and some believe it or not for glory so their names would be remembered throughout the ages. Those were just a few they could think off the top of her head.

"I can't be certain Theo, however for Bryon so far she seems to like the danger as well as rare events like our wedding... it's exciting to her. Although I am sure there is more to it then that." At least she hoped so though if not she hoped that Bryon at least made new friends while she traveled with her and many people she knows.

Blushing slightly as Bryon refers to her distracting aspects very frankly she thought her mother would be a touch amused. She always thought her daughter blushed a little to easily. "Yes that's true especially of your eyes. Well in that case perhaps you could aid Kyriel by being the one to catch a persons eyes. If she can work undisturbed easily her job would be easier."

Looking to Theo she continues softly. "Theo they have special entertainment coming up this evening don't they? I would rather not miss that. Perhaps we should get ready for that. I expect Kyriel will be my secret shadow. Rita, Ovo and anyone else that wants to look out for us can keep us company and hopefully enjoy the festivities with us."

OOC: Will stay as needed though I am getting the feeling we are mostly done here. Aside from discovering Bryon's motivations. ^_~ I think Security is being discussed with General Texor the were wolf as well. Certainly will be happy to meet Tawna and Hakon if they show up to help. We really should cut down on threads to help Ben out a bit.

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

Bryon laughed as if the King had just made a very funny joke. Her laughter might remind one of tinkling bells yet another tell of her heritage. "I want what everyone wants. To be remembered, to make my parents proud, and of course to be surrounded by gorgeous men in need of female companionship. As far as money my parents provided for me. I think it best as well since I expect one or two of your soldiers will be willing to pay for my company."

She threaded her arm into Aelasuria's. "At some point you and I may need to discuss your wedding night sweety since you don't seem all that ahhhh experianced in such things. We should go shopping and choose some dainty frilly things to make you feel femanine. I am sure your mom has told you the hows of things but you may wants some tips from a professional. I think your future husband might appreciate the tips I have for you too."

She playfully bumps the future Queen's hip with her own. "Your right of course I am having a marvelous time. I have enough fey in me to think this sort of thing is fun and enough human to go looking for it. May I come and see these dwarves too? Dwarven men have such marvelous stamina!"

Theoderic is concerned that Byron may have a rather naive view of what is ahead of them.  "You are here to become remembered?  To find companionship?  All these things you may find without becoming an enemy of the Huns, and no doubt you know this.  The only thing I can offer is what you will be remembered for.  When the Huns are defeated, it is we who will be the ones who do it.  You have magic, you can change your appearance, you can change the appearance of others.  That is useful.  Not on a battlefield, but in the preparations for the battle.  And there will be battles ahead. Byron, in the past eight months, we have spent most of our time in the field, travelling.  The men who are with me... usually they are covered in dust and dirt and sweat, and the smell of horses.  I need to be certain you know what you are getting into."

In the meantime...

He gives Byron a cold glare when she becomes much too forward with the future queen.  She is still a stranger- they've just met, what does she think she is doing?

It is the Elven custom that the families prepare their two members for their roles,” Theoderic says.  “I trust Aelasuria's family knows what they are doing, probably more so than mine, as her mother is a priestess.  And we have entertainment to go see, at the Clear Fountain Plaza.  Your service is accepted, but.. do you have lodging?  If not, you should speak to Mergyon, the Majordomo of the palace, and see what he can find for you.”

“Harder times will come, Byron, and sooner than we should wish.  For now, enjoy what Lucimburic has to offer.”

Theoderic goes with Aelasuria to the Clear Fountain Plaza, to see the show.  Rumor has it Cirrus is involved, and Cirrus and Aelasuria have always been close.

Listening to Bryon Aelasuria glances at her when her arm is taken. Then her slight blush goes wine dark at the words that follow. Taken aback she is at a loss for words as her mind catches up to process exactly what Bryon had said in front of everyone present. This gives Theo the chance to speak first.

Taking a moment to regain her composer Aelasuria notes that Bryon is a very forward and friendly person. She had a feeling this was her uncle the satyrs influence to talk so openly of such sensitive subjects. "Thank you for your offer Bryon I know it's meant well. I am afraid I will decline as Theo is correct. Please feel welcome to come with us to the crystal fountain I am sure you will enjoy the entertainment."

She disengages herself from the future queen and goes around front of them. She looks starnly at the King hands akimbo. "Whatever you may think of me I'm no girl. I am a Celtic woman. My people sacked Rome while yours hid in caves. My people took their women into battle with them and the same blood those women had runs in my veins. You may be a King here but in my land you are just a man. Men in my land know better than to cross their women.

My powers do not end in parlor tricks. I can shatter rocks with a word. I can walk on walls. I can release the chaos in my soul as a weapon more deadly than any sword. I have fought infernal servants and sent the running home to their mommies. I am a tempest, an earthquake, the cleansing fire of a lightening strike. Do not treat me as a child. I have every right to fight Huns along side any man, elf, or dwarf in your armies!"

Though her wrath came on quickly it was fleeting and she is herself again in a moment.

Bryon does not argue this. She can tell when lover's wish to be alone. She smiles knowingly. She reaches into her bag and retrievers a carved wooden jewlery box inlaid with caligraphic Celtic Runes.  "My da makes them. It says 'hope' which my da carved the week he found out I was attending a Queen's wedding. Keep hope in your house and all is possible. Its our wedding gift."

She gives it to the future Queen. "I would like us to be friends. I can't help how I am but the one thing about me I'm loyal to the bone. Whatever you need be it magic or advice or just someone to listen to you I am here for you. Both of you.

Now lets go find those dwarves!"

Aleasuria nods slightly accepting the gift from Bryon looking her over. She might not be a wizard although she fights very much with magic. Thank you for the Gift Bryon. Your people are proud like the dwarves. They wouldn't like their fighting prowess questioned not in the least."

She pauses for a moment before continuing smiling slightly even though her blush has not yet had time to fade. "I think I understand. My mother is a priestess of a elvish goddess of love. She takes her duties very seriously and has a interesting sense of humor. I trust that we can be friends. Perhaps you should visit the priestesses of Venus while your here. Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

That night Aelasuria is busy with he dress fittings making sure that everything is perfect for the upcoming wedding. If there is time she visits with Lady Babette mostly just because they are friends. However it also gives her the benefit of being able to discuss any important matters regarding the wedding. Eventually she goes to the baths then sleeps.

In the morning she takes a few moments to present Theo with the gift of the Matching masterwork Saddles she had acquired. "Theo Cirositis let me have these as a gift as he knows I had been searching for a gift for you. He only asks that we ride displaying them openly. If you have time perhaps we can do this before our wedding if not then soon after." Kyriel of course is welcome to come with her as she goes to various places in the palace.

That morning she goes to the baths again taking full advantage of them. Then likely gets caught trying to help with breakfast! Laughing and smiling she behaves allowing them to be served eating lightly though a healthy meal.

She of course Visits Marisol, Spica, Procyon and the other Unicorns. Resting her head against Marisol she hugs her lovingly then will do the same for Spica. Even Procyon gets a loving hug even though she's not as familiar with him. Taking her time she grooms Marisol, then Spica brushing their coats, and tails. She massages their legs and checks their hooves. Due to their magic it's unlikely she will ever find anything wrong. Still it was important to keep up good habits. Horses are not blessed or lucky to be Unicorns!

"It's good to see you again Marisol. I really missed you while you had to be away. Spica you also have been wonderful to me. I hope that all of you have been able to relax and have been happy here in the gardens."

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

Aelasuria catches up with Theoderic in the garden.  He is grateful that even in the middle of all this, the city and the celebration, Aelasuria still appreciates some quiet moments.  The garden, even though it is winter, is green, and there are birds in the air.  The Unicorns have that effect.  Even one can add some life to a meadow.  A herd of them… and spring comes very early.

He wasn’t expecting the saddles, though.

One of the Unicorns gives a disapproving snort.

Theoderic smiles.  “Not for any of you, silly,” he says to the Unicorn.  “For horses.”  Then he turns back to Aelasuria, takes her in his arms, and gives her a kiss.  “They are magnificent.   I won’t ask where or how.  Lucimburic isn’t known for horses, or gear for horses, and I didn’t see them in the market.  Wait…”

Of course he picked up a gift for her.  But he warns, with a little embarrassment on his face… “I’m sorry, it’s really not as magnificent as the saddles.  Those are the finest leatherwork I’ve seen in years and this.. well this is just something.”

Aelasuria finds a “Bath Set” from the artisans of the Ardennes Elves.  They don’t have bathhouses like she’s seen elsewhere.  They do their bathing in the rivers and lakes and ponds of their natural home, so they have to careful about what they put in it:  no one wants a soapy lake!  So they make special soaps and oils and scents from natural plant materials, that won’t affect the water.  And towels and washcloths, all in a basket of silvery wicker.

But they don’t have that much time together, before a small team of Elves, plus Cirrus, arrives to extract Aelasuria.

”We have a lot of work to do,” Aelasuria’s sister says.  “We have to get you ready.”

Cirrus smiles, and says to  Theoderic.  “Don’t think you’re free, Mergyon is coming for you!”

Kyriel accompanies Aelasuria to the the fittings. Not only does she need to keep an eye on Aelasuria, she also needs to get her own dress fitted. When she has a chance, she tells the seamstress what she wants.

She trusts that Mergyon will take care of King Theoderic.

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

The previous night Aelasuria would visit with her parents as well enjoying talking with them for a good long while. She also mentions Cirrus to her mother and that she is part sylph. It also concerns her sudden fame due to her amazing talent singing. She asks her to share her wisdom on how to handle things making sure that Cirrus is safe though not smothered. Her mother having experience with raising children amongst other things should prove priceless. That and perhaps speak to cirrus directly if she feels there is need.

Aelasuria smiles at the Unicorns nodding slightly as she speaks softly to the Unicorns as well. "Yes they are meant for horses. I imagine we will get a chance to show them off later."

Snuggling into the hug she melts into the kiss blushing slightly as she remains in the hug for many long moments. She just didn't want to leave the hug anytime soon. Though in due time she will looking at the wonderful gift Theo gave her.  "Oh Theo! Thank you! It's not how magnificent the gift is Theo that is important. It's the thought and love behind the gift given. This is a wonderful gift Theo and I will cherish it. I can't wait to use the bathe set Theo! Unfortunately I have already had my bath this morning. It would have to wait till at least this afternoon or perhaps tomorrow."

She laughs and smiles when Cirrus, family and perhaps a few other elves come for her. Gently she hugs Cirrus close happy to see her. Then hugs her sisters as well greeting all of them warmly. "All right. You certainly didn't waste any time tracking me down. Take care Theo I will see you again soon."

Gracefully she walks out of the Gardens with her Retinue of family and friends.

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

1. Marisol elects to follow Aelasuria and company.  It's unexpected at first... most Unicorns have no desire to be indoors.  Cirrus looks back at the Unicorn following them along and asks, simply, “Marisol?”

“I think I have a right,” Marisol asks.  “I am her friend as well.

“It's alright,” one of the Elven girls says,  “We're going to the suite the set up for Theoderic and Aelasuria, we'll get ready there.  It faces the garden, and it's on the ground floor.  I think the Duke and Duchess did that on purpose so Aelasuria could by close to the Unicorns.  “

Rita would know, from attending the secret security meeting, that yes, that was the idea.  Part of it. The other part was, the suite connects to a very nice bath chamber on the level below.  When it came up in the Security Meeting, everyonre realized that there was no better protection than having seven Unicorns staying just outside.

Barstow and Babette have several master bedroom suites in the palace.  Over the course of centuries, sometimes the rulers would want to live in quarters that just didn't match anything the palace had to offer.  So they added.  Babette and Barstow are currently living in the newest addition to the palace, a balconied three story addition at the far southeast corner, perched over the Alzette river.  They prefer the “country” look of that new wing, and the remoteness.  A bear's lodge off in the wilderness.  But this place is much older.  It is a luxurious suite, facing the garden on one side, but with thick velvety curtains for privacy.  Wide stairs lead down to the original palace bath house below- the main reason Babette decided to give this place to the newlyweds.  The whole suite is decorated throughout with very “rustic” primitive looking furniture.  Aelasuria has seen the style here before.  It gives the suite the impression of grotto hidden in the forest.

“After you're married you and Theoderic will move in here,” Cirrus says.  “But for now it's where we can get ready.”

Babette has located a team of quick efficient tailors- Wereshrews.  They are here for last minute fixes, and also, to make sure Kyriel's dress is properly “poofy”.  Being very small in stature, the Wereshrews use small step ladders to go to work.

Cirrus, though, has her own dress- which Chara had thoughtfully packed for the trip here.  It's the one of the dresses Entherin had given them a long time ago, with the protective magic.

Aelasuria gently caresses Along Marisol's neck and Main smiling warmly at her. "Your always welcome Marisol!"

Listening to the elven girl Aelasuria nods with a happy expression clearly liking that choice. "That is a wonderful idea to be near the Unicorns. I should thank Duke Barstow and Lady Babette it will be so nice to be able to easily visit and talk with Marisol, Spica, Procyon and the other Unicorns."

She looks over the suite with avid interest drinking in the rustic furniture, as well as the hidden grotto ambiance. She lightly moves one of the curtains taking in the view outside smiling as she can see the garden as well as whomever might be in it that isn't hidden by some obstructing object or plant. "It's a lovely view. Not only is it close to the garden it's also close to the baths!" A fact that she loves all things considered.

Smiling Aelasuria hugs Cirrus for a long moment then slips back. "Your dress is very lovely Cirrus! Chara chose well I think! I also love Kyriel's dress it looks very well on her. I don't imagine I will see you in a poofy dress very often will I Kyriel." Her green eyes have a merry twinkle in them as she smiles at her friend.

Aelasuria is patient, cooperative and as helpful to the were shrews as possible. Slipping on her elegant blue silk elven style dress. Aelasuria checks herself in the mirror. It tastefully compliments her supple form leaving her shoulders bare. She twirls around to give everyone a look at it from all sides. "It is a strange feeling to be both joyous and a touch nervous at the same time."

Looking at her friends she continues softly her green eyes gazing into first Cirrus's then kyriel's as she asks. "Kyriel, Cirrus do you think Theo is feeling nervous as well?"

That is a question easily answered by Marisol.

"He would put himself in front of any danger for you," the Unicorn says.  "But in truth, he is frightened.  That is why he came to the garden, to find Procyon, because he always values Procyon's advice.  And he is frightened, afraid that he will let you down somehow."

"I cannot imagine him being afraid of anything," Cirrus says.

"Nevertheless, this is why he came to find Procyon." Marisol says.

As the wereshrew tailors get her dress in order, Kyriel puts on a couple of hand crossbows. She needs them to be completely hidden by the sleeves of her new dress. When she has the time, she removes the hair extensions and sets her hair in a style very similar to some of the other elven girls and then subtly applies makeup from her gear to emphasize her eyes. Instead of appearing like a young human servant girl, she now looks like a petite young elven woman. Very different from her normal method of blending into the furniture; hopefully it will be as effective.

She smiles a little bit and giggles slightly at Aelasuria's gentle teasing. "No, up until now I haven't needed to wear anything like this. Do you like it?"

After a quick glance in a mirror she arches an eyebrow. "I wonder what Terrance will think of this dress?"

She's about to respond to Aelasuria's question, but Marisol beats her to it.

Listening to Marisol Aelasuria smiles knowing it was true Theo certainly is brave. It wouldn't be the first time considering he had come to her rescue against the Demon tree! "I remember when he did just that. It was against the demon tree. I had taken out the creatures in the branches of a tree. When suddenly it exploded attacking myself and Marisol. IF he hadn't come to our rescue I am not sure we would have made it. It frankly caught me completely by surprise hiding in the water like that."

She shakes her head with a look of wonder.  "He has nothing to fear it's not in his nature to do such a thing. Honestly I will have to remind him of that. Assuming Procyon hasn't already talked some sense into him."

Smiling at Cirrus she briefly takes her hand giving it a gentle squeeze. "I agree he is brave Cirrus. Though brave is the ability to overcome fear in the face of danger. Only a foolish individual fears nothing which is a important distinction to remember."

Aelasuria takes in Kyriel's new look with appreciation. "Yes I do... I like it very  much Kyriel. It really suits you Kyriel you look truly lovely." A lovely smile blossoms as Aelasuria gives Kyriel a affectionate and confident look. "He will love it and just might be at a loss for words to express himself. You should wear it just for him so that you can enjoy seeing his reaction. I am sure he will appreciate seeing you in it Kyriel."

Kyriel and Rita are both fully aware of The Plan.  There is a villain out there, somewhere.  The whole palace and the Clear Fountain Plaza are under guard and under watch, and Wereweasels are on the prowl on the rooftops, looking for anyone (else) out of place.

Out in the plaza, Haakon and Tawna are receiving their awards... and from there, they will have their own wedding... which will be the "opening act" for the Royal wedding.  But no one outside has been told... and hopefully, the confusion as to what wedding is going on will confuse any villain.

They get ready, but they also wait, until they hear that the stage is ready for them.

This is the first that Kyriel has heard of the demon tree. "More demons? We dealt with Zerova. There was another one that tried to get into the Academy recently. I wonder how many there are aside from the ones that the huns worship."

She flashes Aelasusria a smile. "Thanks. I think he'll like it too, even if it is different from my normal clothes."

Now is probably the best time to prepare for an attack. She gets out a couple of bolts for the hand crossbows and carefully takes the time to coat the tips in the remnants of the crystal spider venom that Riva had given her. Carefully she loads each one and makes sure the safety is on. Having a misfire during the wedding would be a bad thing.

Once that's done, she practices moving in the dress. If necessary she'll use a couple of drops of Terrance's ethereal potion on the shoulders of the dress if it gets in the way. Best to know now if she'll need it.

While they're waiting, she picks up a bundle of flowers. Bridesmaids carry them, don't they? Besides, it will give her something to do with her hands.

She nods slightly her eyes meeting Kyriels and despite the dark topic still Aelasuria smiles. After all this day is her wedding day! "Yes Theo and I have had to slay at least two demons. I think it was three although with all the fighting and time that has passed I don't honestly remember the exact number. The latest were the Ice demons making a way for the Iron soldiers to cross the river."

Looking happy at Kyriel's words Aelasuria's smile brightens. "Good then it makes a excellent gift for you. Perhaps we can get you something else that is also nice yet not quite so poofy." She watches Kyriel practice moving in the dress giving her a occasional tip or two on how to move if being in a dress proves unfamiliar to Kyriel.

Then she thinks of another gift she might be able to give Kyriel if Marisol or Spica is consenting. "Marisol I know that neither you nor Spica are obligated to do so. Do you think that perhaps we could gift Kyriel with the chance to ride a Unicorn just once before we leave Lucimburic? I will understand if you both decline."

“I am sure one of the Unicorns will be happy to bear Kyriel,” Marisol says.  “She has a good heart.  We can see these things."

Kyriel has spent a long time living in the lands of Humans.  And as young as she is, that's most of her memories.  But she does have some scattered recollections of the times when her family, Elven traders, returned to the Ardennes.  Those were happy occasions, when Elves would gather from the villages, to see the things they had brought back from their trading expeditions.

And now and then, like any other Elven girl, Kyriel would play on the fringes of the village.

She's pretty sure she's seen Unicorns before.  Just brief fleeting encounters, long ago, shining white heads watching her from across a meadow, or a flash of white moving between trees in the distance.  But she knows she's seen them.

After endless fussing and adjusting, Aelasuria's small troop of assistants think she is ready to go.  A last round of adjustments... pull that up there... refasten that...

And her sister gives her something of a reprimand.  "Brides do not talk of slaying Demons!" the older Elf says.  "That's hardly good talk for a wedding.  Find something else, please."

"Where do you plan to go after the wedding?" Cirrus suggests.

A servant warns them- time is getting close.

Aelasuria looks happy at the thought it was a precious thing for her to be able to ride a unicorn. If she could she wanted to share it at least once with Kyriel. "Thank you Marisol I truly appreciate that."

Being good she allows everyone to fuss over her doing her best to make it as easy for everyone as possible. Smiling Aelasuria takes a moment to give her sister a loving hug just holding her affectionately for a bit. Then slips back speaking softly with a amused expression. "You have a point I imagine mother will truly enjoy the celebration. She's been waiting for this day for decades I think. I know how she loves to dance and socialize at gatherings. It's to bad the Korrigans and other fey are not here although cities are definitely not their thing. Although I imagine they will be holding their own celebrations in the forests for the solstice."

Looking to Cirrus Aelasuria realizes she's caught up in the moment and really hasn't thought about after the wedding.  "I imagine cirrus that we will be celebrating with family and friends. At first I think the crystal fountain would be a good place to share our celebration with the people of Lucimburic. Although that could be problematic considering certain issues. From there likely the dukes Palace for a more private gathering with family and friends. Including a stop to visit Spica, Marisol whom is present now, as well as the other Unicorns."

When the servant warns them the time is getting close Aelasuria nods slightly. "I would like to greet the Newlyweds although I am afraid unless they stay for I and Theo's wedding we will likely miss them. If your talking about after leaving Luicimburic Cirrus I honestly don't know just yet."

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

Hearing that the iron soldiers were dealt with certainly cheers Kyriel up. "Good! I was worried about those things." Although the idea that ice demons had been employed to make their trek through swamps possible for them makes her frown. "They tried to think of everything, didn't they?"

The offer of the dress as a gift to her is more than a little surprising and she blushes. "Really, it isn't necessary for you to give me anything. This is your day!"

When she hears Aelasuria ask Marisol about riding, a few vague memories from long ago rise up. "I think I remember seeing unicorns when I was very little."

A tint of red graces her cheeks as she blushes at the idea of riding one of the unicorns. It's tempting, but she doesn't want to draw undue attention to herself. "Thank you. I'm honored, but I really shouldn't. I shouldn't draw attention away from you, Aelasuria."

She gives Aelasuria's sister a hang dog look at the reprimand. "I'm sorry. I wasn't thinking."

Hearing that it's getting close to time, she gets into business mode. Of course, part of that is blending in. Taking a few moments, she helps Aelasuria touch up her makeup. "We should make sure you're ready."

Lady Babette appears at the door.

“Yoohoo!” She calls out.  “It's time.  We're all going to go out to the garden, and then with the Unicorns to the south delivery entrance because it's easy on the Unicorns and Mergyon said we should.  Anyway, that's where Aelasuria's father and the rest of her family is, and they're going to go as a group to Crystal Fountain Plaza stage because that's where the wedding is.  Except Aelasuria's mother, she'll be waiting at the stage because she will do the wedding thing... I don't know how it is for Elves but I imagine it's not so different.  Don't you all look simply adorable!”

"Is there any order we are supposed to go in?" Cirrus asks.

"I'm sure there is," the Duchess says.  "But I have no idea what it is.  With us.. we just makes up something that feels right."

Aelasuria nods slightly letting Kyriel know at least that it might not be over. "We don't know if we got them all. I believe they sacrificed quality for quantity. Yes the forethought to their planning is cunning. I am not sure if it's the Hun leadership or the powers they worship behind that thinking."

Smiling Aelasuria shakes her head speaking softly while gently taking one of Kyriels hands and giving it a gentle squeeze. "I am not concerned about that besides I will be riding a Unicorn as well unless it's preferred that I walk." She is happy to let Kyriel help her prepare then when Lady Babette arrives she smiles warmly at her.

"It is a family affair and a joyous moment for all who are present. I would prefer if we simply walk as a group. However if you wish it I can be ever so slightly ahead with Kyriel, my sister, cirrus and you as well lady Babette on my right and left just slightly behind if you like. The Unicorns will be with us as well. They can both proceed and follow as they wish. Now if I am riding that changes things only slightly and would still work."

Briefly before they go out she gives everyone a hug one at a time. Starting with Lady Babette, then her sister, Kyriel, Cirrus and anyone else she might have missed! If they Decide to let her ride she slips up on Marisol's or Spica's back as appropriate. Then proceeds with the group. If not she walks gracefully with them one hand Caressing Spica's or Marisol's neck and mane either way.

Kyriel looks to the others for direction on how to proceed when Lady Babette tells them that it's almost time. She's never been involved in a wedding before, and she sure doesn't remember anything about them either. When Aelasuria tells her that she'll be riding one of the unicorns as well, she nods slowly. "Then I will ride with you."

She reaches over to lightly brush the unicorn that's nearest her. "Will you be carrying me? I don't do much riding."

She expresses her thoughts on the iron soldiers. "I would think that they would have used most if not all of them for the initial attack against the Ardennes." She smirked. "They would have expected something like them to have been totally unexpected by my people. Since they were used in a sudden strike, the defenders shouldn't have been able to develop a defense against them quickly enough. Fortunately, that wasn't the case." Realizing that she's treading on dangerous ground (at least according to Aelasuria's sister), she trails off.

Once she's done with helping Aelasuria with her makeup, she helps Cirrus and Rita if they want any help. After that, she grabs the bunch of flowers that she had before. It's not a large bunch; and certainly not large enough to hide a weapon in. Her main reason to be there isn't for her skills with weapons. No; her eyes, ears, and mental outlook are why.

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

Rita is in the suite with Aelasuria, her family members, and the other bridesmaids. She too has to get her dress fitted and her hair done. Aelasuria had said her mother and sisters were providing the dresses, and Rita hopes hers is in an elven style, as she has come to like that style quite a bit. She has her hair done in an elven style as well.

She would have liked to have been at the plaza for the award ceremony and wedding of Haakon and Tawna, but since the wedding party had to wait here, she watches from a window if there is one facing the plaza. What an amazing crowd there is out there! Such unity among so many different races and peoples. This is the beginning of the new Europa, she strongly believes.

Aelasuria's bath set from the unicorns is lovely. "They know you both well," she says, smiling at Aelasuria.

The thought of baths makes her thinks of Jacquen. "I wish Jacquen were here. She is so much a part of all this." It is still strange speaking of Jacquen as a girl. "Aelasuria, do you have any idea where Jacquen might be?"

Kyriel certainly looks very different as an elven girl in a fancy dress. "You look lovely," she compliments her. "I hope some day you can walk openly among us as an elf without fear. I want to bring Aelasuria to visit Arras, my hometown. I would like it if you came with us. Not now--we have to wait until Arras withdraws from that horrible treaty. I decided months ago that as long as elves are not welcome there, I will not visit, as I do not feel welcome there either."

She takes time to gaze around the room, observing the decor and looking out on the balcony. For a long while, she doesn't say much. This is an emotional day for so many reasons. In her mind, she goes over everything that happened since last March, when she first met Aelasuria. So much has happened. Would Theoderic and Aelasuria have gotten together if Rita had not been involved?

It is now a year that she has been a priestess. And six months since she unexpectedly met a young man who loves her as much as she loves him.

Her thoughts are interrupted when Aelasuria mentions the fight with the demon tree. "I remember that battle well. Marisol saved both of your lives.

There appear to be many demons, unfortunately,"
she responds to Kyriel. "There were times when Aelasuria and I were separated, and on those missions too, my group fought demons. The war is really a war against demons, not Huns. The Huns are just tools. The demons are the ones manipulating them."

When Aelasuria's sister's says, "brides do not talk of slaying demons," she realizes how inappropriate she is being.

"I am sorry. It is partly my fault. I should not be discussing such matters now either. Though it might make Aelasuria laugh to hear that last summer, I joked to Riordeg that Theoderic should be called 'Prince Demonkiller.' We thought it would be quite amusing if the children started calling him that, but of course, we never said anything of this idea to them. It was just something Riordeg and I found amusing."

As a bridesmaid, she too carries a bouquet.

"You will love riding a unicorn," she says to Kyriel when Marisol approves of the idea. "A group of us rode unicorns last summer from Raviniacum to the elven lands in the Ardennes to visit Entherin. The freedom and joy--it was like nothing I had ever experienced before."

Was that when I first started becoming a devotee of Proserpina? she wonders.

"It doesn't matter to me where in the order you put me," she says to Aelasuria. "I am truly grateful for your sharing this great moment and day with me, with all of us." She gives Aelasuria a hug. "I am so very happy for you--the best friend I've ever had."

Rita cannot quite get a handle on her feelings. She feels more lighthearted, more free, more hopeful, than she can ever remember feeling. That and the excitement of anticipation as the time drew close--the type of excitement discouraged by the order of Pluto. Never in her life would she have imagined even attending a royal wedding, let alone be in the wedding party.

"Aelasuria, if you or the unicorns would like, I can cast protective spells on you, especially the one that creates a magic circle against evil. Just say the word, and I will do it," she promises.

She smiles at Kyriel nodding slightly happy that she would get the chance.  Then looks thoughtful nodding again. "I certainly hope so they are a very dangerous opponent.'

Looking at Rita she shakes her head wishing she could help. "I am afraid not Rita." She gives her a look of sympathy knowing it couldn't be easy for Rita to turn her back on her home. "They made a concession to the Huns because of their power. Hopefully it was only to buy time and they plan on dealing with the Huns in good time. Our vicotories over the Huns no doubt has gotten back to Arras by now. Hopefully this will influnce their thoughts on certain matters."

"Mmm it's probably for the best. I am not sure Theo would be comfortable with such a thing. My Family no doubt will appreciate your efforts on my behalf as I do. You certainly may cast anything you feel is needed Rita."

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

"Wherever Jacquen is, I hope she is safe," Rita says softly. "I am grateful to King Theoderic for having made the commitment to rescue Jacquen's parents."

If there is one thing that can put a damper on such a special day, it is the thought of Arras making any type of concession to the Huns.

"There was never consensus in Arras for such a concession. I remember hearing the back and forth discussions all the time. Of course, that was before the attack on our temple, when many still doubted that demons were involved. That attack and our victories cannot help but change everything."

The thought of the attacks in Arras reminds her of Pelion. "I wonder if a new high priest has been chosen at the Temple of Pluto. It was supposed to be done at the Solstice, but I guess we won't know for a while."

For a minute, she is confused about just what Theoderic would not be comfortable with.

"He would not be comfortable with what? Protective spells cast on you?

Oh, you mean that 'Prince Demonkiller' thing?"
The thought brings a smile to her face. "Don't worry; it was just a joke between me and Riordeg. I think there might be a part of me that is rebelling against the grim and serious environment I grew up in. It's like I purposely think of saying things that would get me in trouble back home. But I am not a child. I have responsibilities to the king, and I know better than to make silly remarks like that, as I would never want to make the king feel uncomfortable.

I am enjoying meeting your family again,"
she says. "They are most kind and have always been good to me. You are very lucky to have them.

If you do not mind, I will cast the Magic Circle Against Evil on you, just to give you some extra protection at this important moment."

She will cast the spell on Aelasuria right before the wedding party heads out towards the plaza.

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

"She will be protected, because we are here,” Marisol says to Rita, “but your magic is welcome of course.  More cannot hurt.”

Aelasuria cannot get on Marisol's back until they reach the Delivery Entrance, otherwise she would hit her head on the door frame.

Babette recommends that Kyriel save her attempt at Unicorn riding.  “This moment, no one should obscure the bride,” she says.  “It wouldn't be right.”

She singles out Cirrus.  “You,” she says.  “You take these flowers, go in front.”

At the delivery entrance, they meet up with the male contingent of Aelasuria's family... at least., those who are here.  Leading the group is her father, Aristhandel Soulwater.

He looks at Aelasuria with very mixed emotions- pride, joy, and maybe holding back a desire to ask “Are you sure about this?” one last time.

“Oh, my little Aela, with us such a short time, and now look, a queen “ he says.

And he means it, of course, for as Elves count there lives, Aelasuria is barely out of childhood.  He is a little choked up, considering how quickly things have moved, from his point of view.

They head over to the Clear Fountain Plaza, and that thread.

"Its' possible we might learn quickly Rita the various priests and priestesses have access to divine magic some of it rather potent. Not only that they have the power wealth and prestige can provide. Which means they can call on spell casters such as wizards if they so desire. If they want King Theoderic to receive word very quickly or you Rita if your father desired could find a way."

For a moment Aelasuria can't help but smile as she almost though not quite laughs. "Oh Rita! There is nothing in responsibility that says you can not relax and enjoy our company. I think if it makes someone laugh that this is a good thing. So please feel free to joke once in a while. I did not mean to imply you shouldn't."

She nods slightly speaking softly to Rita. "Thank you I do feel very lucky to have been born into my family. I am glad that your feeling comfortable around them. I don't mind Rita feel free to cast it if you wish."

With Lady Babette she nods slightly deciding to let the Duchess have her desire. Kyriel could always ride later and perhaps it was for the best. She would be more free to act if she was in a familiar situation. Aelasuria smiles gently taking her fathers hands as she looks into his eyes. "I will always be there for you father. Thank you I will have much to learn being a queen. Besides if I have  my way I will talk Theo into frequent visits to our home and my cottage. In fact I acquired a magical item I think that will make this much more possible then before."

She gets out the magical cube showing it to her father. "One side is attuned to Lucimburic so I can return here to visit Duke Bastow and Lady Babette. It is my hope that we can attune another side to our home. As well as one side to where Theo lives. Perhaps father with your greater experience you would have a easier time figuring out how to do this? After the wedding of course." If not she plans on figuring it out herself in due time.

Briefly she hugs her father then smiles heading out to the Clear fountain plaza!

Kyriel smiles and nods when Rita mentions being able to go out openly as an elf. "Thank you. I hope so too, though I've been able to be more open about it of late. Besides, some were able to figure it out anyway." After a moment she shrugs and continues. "However, dressing the way I have previously has let me hide effectively in plain sight. Most people discount the servants, especially young serving girls."

She nods again when Rita comments about the demons but doesn't say anything more. Aelasuria's sister is probably getting exasperated with them talking about demons and politics instead of idle chatter. Mentally she shrugs; whatever they talk about is fine by her.

She still has some misgivings about riding a unicorn to the wedding, but she doesn't want to irritate the unicorns or go against Aelasuria's wishes. Someone riding a unicorn is automatically someone that will be given greater scrutiny than she wants. Fortunately, Lady Babette gives her a reason to decline this time. She vows to do so at some point before she leaves though. While she doesn't know much about temple politics she does have an opinion. "A lot of people have made concessions to the hun to buy time, and it usually hasn't worked out well. I hope this time it's different."

For the time being she holds her tongue on some of the opinions that she had heard on the road. Later, in council she can broach the spin that's being put on Theoderic's actions.

She takes the rearmost position of the maids in the procession.

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

What would winged horses and unicorns talk about, if they had the chance?

It's not just a “daydreamy” sort of question, as they meet in the garden at the palace of Lucimburic.  They are creatures with certain philosophical similarities, and yet... worlds apart.  Both are beings of magic, and both born with the instinct of “good”, but they have their own ways of finding it.  Winged Horses are above the earth, their great feathery wings seeming to be the wings of angels, and they do seem to be charged by the gods themselves to serve their will.  Unicorns are of the Earth: perhaps nature needed one absolutely untainted and untaintable defender, just to make sure that no one ever compromises too far.

Sky and forest.  To be above, or within.  There is not complete agreement between the two, but there is understanding.  That is remarkable in itself, because Hermod does not speak, at least, not in any language understood by Humans or Elves.  But the Unicorns have no problem understanding him.

The Unicorns can travel the snow covered countryside, of course, and they do not like remaining in Lucimburic, even though Barstow and Babette have done all they can to make the Unicorns comfortable, giving them the palace gardens for their own use, the walls, and the sheer numbers of people, press on them.  Several days after the wedding they leave, except for Spica, Marisol, and Procyon.

These three stay longer into the winter.  As the winter progresses, Marisol increasingly shows the signs of pregnancy.  Unicorn foals are always born in the forest- deep in the forest, in their own sacred groves.  And always in the Spring.  When life is coming back into bloom, that is the time for Unicorns.

“Procyon and I will leave soon,” Marisol tells Aelasuria.  “I know the place already.  It is perfect, and not far from Raviniacum.  It is a notch on a hillside that catches the sunrise.  I know that you want to travel with Theoderic in the spring, and I know it is an important cause... if it were not so, I would ask you to be near.  But soon, there will be a Unicorn foal.  Who knows... maybe soon, you will have a child as well.  It would be nice to introduce them.  Spica will stay here, with you, and she will be the link between Theoderic and you, and the Unicorns.”

I assure you if it's in one year or ten our children will be introduced to each other. Thank you for staying as long as you have. I know that all of you probably would have been happier in the deep forest all this time."

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

Marisol has known Elfin Cats for a long, long time.  Noctore and his kin have been in the Fey Forest of Brittany not as long as Unicorns, but a long time.  She has no jealousy watching Aelasuria and Felicia.  Unicorns do not feel such things.  But it does feel nice to be introduced, formally.

Marisol introduced herself to the kitten, even though she knows that Felicia is much too young to understand.

Unicorns do have a very odd relationship with Elfin cats.  They are both rare ad magical beings that live in certain special forests.  Elfin Cats live as long as Elves. As Aelasuria might remember from how Marisol interacted with the Elfin Cats they met, while most Fey folk are very respectful to Unicorns (some even called Marisol “Queen”,)  the Elfin Cats tease and taunt, and they sometimes act as if the entire world was a big ball of yarn, all for their amusement. But it is always with a good nature.  They won’t cause harm, and often, their teasing is a way to get someone to see something in a different way.

It was Theoderic who suggested the kitten,” Marisol says.  “I don’t know if I was supposed to tell you that, but then, no one said not to.  Theoderic decided on that a long time ago.  He said it would make you happy, and then it was Entherin who located the kitten in need of a home.  It is a kin-kitten of Elyore, the cat we met in the Fourth Mark.”

Between the kitten and the unicorn, Aelasuria can spend a lot of time petting furry friends.

There is also Theoderic, who wants some of her time.  He finds her with her hoofed and pawed companions in the garden.

We won’t have many more days here,” he says.  He nuzzles her next to her ear.  “We’re going to miss this.  And the palace’s baths are warm and comfortable and we won’t see anything like it for a long time ahead. And.. it will fit two.”

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

She smiles At Felicia as well as Marisol glad that they had Marisol had the chance to introduce herself. The elfin cat had a bit of mischievousness in her spirit as did most of her kind. Aelasuria thought she has a bit in common with the elfin cat's desire to be free and independent. She had after all left home for a life of adventure. It would have been so easy to stay home enjoy the noble life. Study inside her tower, find a husband, and settle down without ever leaving the safe walls of her home city. Though she would still do good things in her own way even then.

Mother and father would have been equally happy for her she was confident of that. Although having made her choices she wouldn't give up Marisol, Spica, Procyon, Theo, and of course her friends for the world. "OH I see so he was the one behind this little bundle of life coming into our lives. I should thank him, Entherin, as well as Elyore for entrusting me with a member of her family no matter how distant the blood relation might be."

When Theo arrives she smiles warmly leaning back into him one small hand lifting to caress the back of his hand. His arms were so strong, warm, and comforting which was something she would never get tired of. At his suggestion she blushes slightly her lips quirking up into a smile. "Marisol if you will forgive me I think someone else needs me right now. Can you keep Felicia company please? I am not so certain a cat even a elfin one would like the water!"

Gently she takes Theo's hand her delicate graceful fingers entwining with his. "Shall we go Theo?"

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

In the time they have for themselves, it is more than physical intimacy.  There are thoughts Theoderic shares with Aelasuria that he speaks of with no one else.

For example... how best to employ those around them.

"Melissa came to me the other day, and pointed out something," he says.  "I put Rita and Titus in charge of watching over her.  But both are gone.  She suggested Eadoin.  It seems strange, doesn't it, a prisoner suggesting who her warden will be.  But she believes I cannot even appear to just pardon her.  She's done too much.  If not Eadoin, though, who?  Scolo likes her, and I need Scolo with us.  His magic is powerful.  And she seems to be a good influence on him."

And then there is the issue of Cirrus.

"Cirrus wants to stay on as messenger.  It's very, very dangerous, I know... Rita would be frantic.  But she wants to help, to be useful and to prove herself.  It's important to her.  And she is the fastest rider... on a horse, at least.  But the risks... it will be harder this time, going into enemy territory instead of defending our own land.  Is Cirrus ready?"

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

Listening to Theo talking about some of the difficulties they all would have to consider she nods slightly. "Melissa and Scolo make a natural team that are good for each other. Melissa needs someone to care for giving her a good purpose in life possibly for the first time in a long time. Scolo I think is lonely and in need of someone to help guide him towards more rational actions. It's true he's handled the burden for a long time alone. However I think he wants as well as needs that help. So yes I think it's wise to appoint him as her guardian or warden whatever you want to call it Now it might not hurt to ask one other both for their benefit and to satisfy anyone that might give you a hard time about Scolo's suitability to look after her. I suggest a powerful warrior to compliment his magic and her stealthy ways. One of the dwarves or were folk might be Ideal. I would suggest Ovo or Vangrenk however I have no idea where they are now.  We can't have everything though so whatever is best. I certainly respect Eadoin and if he's willing to go I think he will be good. He's a druid and he will care for both the land and the people that need help."

When he talks about cirrus she nods with a look of worry as well. It wouldn't be easy especially if Rita strongly objected to Cirrus presence. Of course there were dangers even in the city if of a different type. "Honestly Theo any time you send someone that's young and inexperienced into a dangerous situation you have to wonder that. Cirrus hasn't had formal training as a warrior, wizard, cleric, ranger or otherwise that I know of. Perhaps it's time that you formally charge her with training so that she will have the skills she needs in case trouble catches up with her."

"With her talent for singing, as well as enjoying attention perhaps a bard or some such could train her. If not a bard Kyriel or someone similarly skilled might be able to give her proper training on how to avoid being found or seen when she doesn't wish to be. If you have any idea's how we can direct her desire to help safely I certain am all ears. Rita would probably suggest that she look after the children back at the orphanage. Certainly a important duty though not what I think cirrus has in mind."

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

For a long time, Cirrus accepted her position as “one of the kids”.  But she wasn't, and she knew it, and that... and other things... began to drive her towards proving herself as something more.

When Theoderic explains the plan for her, she has mixed emotions.   Theoderic takes Aelasuria's suggestion, that she be trained.  But in what?  Her gifts seem to fall into now pattern he recognizes.   But Aleasuria suggested building on her singing abilties.  He knows only one person who possibly teach music, and survival skills, together.

“You should visit my grandmother,” he says.  “She has an assistant who is a musician.  Lyrandol.”

“We met,” Cirrus says in her soft, high pitched, and uncannily clear voice.  “Several times.  At Entherin's palace, and Raviniacum, and here, playing music.  He is a nice Elf.  He still does not like you as much as he should, but he respects you.”

Theoderic nods.  “The respect is mutual… we could drop you off there on our way to Mos Trajectum.  Maybe he’d agree to teach you.”

But Cirrus has other ideas.  She protests.. softly, but earnestly.  She does not want to be hidden away somewhere safe, not now.

”When this is over,” she says, “and they ask me, ‘where were you?’  I want to know that I did my best.  That’s all.  Let me ride between Mos Trajectum and Belgica, at least.  It will be as safe as anywhere.”

* * * * *

Cirrus is not the only one with such feelings.  There are others.  Soldiers who don’t want to go home to their farms, not just yet.  Even if food will be short, and pay even shorter.

Theoderic talks to a young man from Gaul.  A few months ago, he was escorting the Emperor’s “loot caravan” because he had no other choice.  He has no place to go back to, now.  His weapons and armor are poor, his horse is second rate, and Theoderic is worried.. will he survive?

And there is the crown Raude gave him.  Out of all the clerics of Arras… Raude… the High Priestess of Venus, representing the triumph of passion above all else.. had been the one to support him openly.

This campaign, he would trust to passion more than military doctrines.

Cirrus got her place with Theoderic's group.  The young fighter from Gaul, and a few others like him as well.  They are not all the greatest of warriors, but they are the most eager.

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

Thinking about it Aelasuria listens to Theo talking with Cirrus taking in her reaction. "I was thinking that you enjoyed singing as well as the reactions of the people who heard you. You enjoy the attention Cirrus one thing you should remember though is that not all attention is good. Some people can be very dangerous as well as being manipulative. They will see your inexperience as well as how you desire the attention. Playing on that could put you in a very dangerous position. However I am getting away from what I meant to say."

"A bard inspires people using music. They can make soldiers brave and fight better then they would with magic. They can instill fear into their opponents amongst other things. They do this by singing and perhaps playing musical instruments. Which I believe you have a talent for. You could also take ranger training would sever a messenger very well. You could be attacked Cirrus. Aside from Huns, there are blackguards, bandits and occasionally some sort of monster even on roads between major cities.  Since your likely alone you need to be prepared to escape or defend yourself as needed. The arts of the bard, the ranger, or both will make you a very effective messenger and more. Although there are other paths you could chose if you desire. We have time to discuss this if you would like privately. I and Theo wish to support you, as well as care about you Cirrus."

Pausing she looks at Theo allowing it to be a joint decision. "Theo if she rides between Mos Trajectum and Belgica can we get someone assigned to at least teach her basic swordsmanship, the bow, and some survival tactics for the wilderness. She can still make her runs but that doesn't mean she can't dedicate some time learning skills that will make her a more effective messenger."

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

1. Cirrus nods at Aelasuria’s warnings, but has the slight pout of a little girl being scolded.

”I won’t talk to any Blackguards,” she says.

Then she goes into a little more detail, explaining how she is not entirely unfamiliar with the dark side of people.  When she was at Lutetia Parisiorum, she played and sang at the Opera House there, and her best friend danced.  Blackguards didn’t come around the Opera House, preferring less sophisticated entertainment.  And then one of the chief Blackguards, Corrantus, struck up a relationship with one of the musicians.  He and some of the other Blackguards visited the Opera House a few times, and soon… some of the Blackguards decided that the young women there should entertain them in other ways.

This led directly to Cirrus and her friend moving out of the little apartment they shared, and taking up with the Brownies, who hid them.  The Brownies had a few secret passages, and they were able to keep their residence a secret while still allowing them to perform.

But the spurned Blackguard that has his eyes on Cirrus’s friend caught up with her after a show, and killed her.  That was the last straw, and Cirrus, despite loving being able to perform for crowds, went with the Brownies and the children they were hiding when Aelasuria and the others brought them out to Raviniacum.

* * * * * *

As they travel, they learn one more thing about Cirrus:  handling a sword will be a problem for her.  Cirrus's unnaturally light body weight means she has no mass to put behind her movements.  A simple parry sends her spinning around.

"We'll need to find something light enough for her," Theoderic says.

Re: The Gardens at the Duke's Palace

She gives cirrus a gentle hug feeling for her as she is reminded about the darkness in Cirrus's past. "Then you understand all to well why we are concerned for you. My regrets Cirrus I don't mean to bring up such dark memories or give you a hard time. However you have to admit Theo would be very worried even about me if I decided to ride alone during a time of war. I agree fighting is a absolute last resort. It's always best to avoid a battle that you can Cirrus."

She looks distinctly unhappy about the problem with a sword or any other weapon that required sufficient force behind it to be effective. "If only cirrus could take advantage of her power of flight. That would thwart most enemies without that ability to fly once she gets enough distance. It's possible a bow or cross bow would serve as even a dagger to be effective requires power as well as precision and skill behind the strike. Though we can give it a try and see how it works out. If she wants to try her hand at magic that's up to her. What is it that you want to learn Cirrus?"
