Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

Rita catches up with Chara in the palace.

Chara is happy with Rita’s suggestion.

”He is of unusual nature for a  prince,” she says.  “I think that is more Procyon’s doing than anyone else.  He does not like wealth, himself.  He feels guilty, having comfort and splendor while others who deserve have less.  That is why he arranged for a few of the families of those who died in the battles to work at our manor, and also to enjoy its comforts.  Your help in caring for the people who need aid would be the gift he would ask for.”

She thinks about it, and adds:  “I wonder what will happen now, if Theoderic will want to move to some larger place.  I don’t know if he can rule a kingdom from Raviniacum, but I know he loves Raviniacum.”

** ** *** ****

Meanwhile, in the meat locker, betwixt a ham and several geese…

Barstow gives something that is something between a grumble and a chuckle, and if there were fleas upon him, they would measure it on the Richter Scale.

”A book?  I’m behind on my reading, Arctos.  It has been years since I have read a book.  I know very little about them, in fact.  This means nothing to me… but I must take it up immediately with Texxor!”

Then he looks suspiciously at Arctos, and adds, “Which by all means you should have done, he knows what he is doing, and there is no such thing as information so vital that it must be given to me at once, and at the same time not so vital that Texxor does not need to hear it immediately!”

Barstow heads out of the meat vault, and quickly relays the information to Texxor, who has been waiting.

”I’ve heard the title of this book before,” the Werewolf says.  “But I know little about it, other than that is associated with our enemies.”

”If it is about unnatural beasts, it most certainly is,” Barstow says.  “We are all natural beasts in Lucimburic, and that is how it was meant for us.  If the forest was meant to have unnatural beasts, there’d be such things as Were-Basilisks, and Were-Stirges, but there are no such things, so we know that Arduinna despises them.  And the Vulturegryph.. that is unnatural too.  A sign of our enemy, then.”

” I know who might know more of this book, because it was mentioned last year, in the context of a foe.  Our priests.”

”Go at once to the temple of Diana,” Barstow says.  “Take this Dwarf, for he is also a priest.  Maybe they have something priestly to talk about.”

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

The Patre shruggs his shoulders, and sighs deeply while looksing on high to the heavens
above as he speaks to Mars himself and the Dwarven gods of goodness . . .

"Mars be merciful and forgive thy lowly humble servant Arctos for having broken another
oath wot hath just been sworn to Alessuria . . . and all my tuther failed oaths as well!

        I declare . . . I'm a humble sinner who'se soul hath a weakness O' the flesh . . . and
I shalt try my dammedest to do wot tis right . . . but as thee well knows Mars, the Infernals and
their vile curse made me do it~~!!!!!"

Arctos pauses a moment to kiss his titanium Holy symbol before turning his attention
back to the Duke in order to continue with his discourse with him . . . then follows the
Duke out of the Meat Locker, and proceeds to rearm himself with his weapons.

"I wouldst hath gone to Texxor to speak with him directly, but I had sworn an oath naught
to be telling every the one about the assassins, so's naught to tip off art adversary that we know O' their plans."

The Dwarf shakes his head in disgust at the thought of his oath already having been broken by the Duke.  Telling Texxor of his oath had not protected himself from the Duke breaking
his oath.  Oh well, it isn't like he hadn't broke his oaths before . . . besides it was for the
greater good . . . just as his having broken his oath to his better half where his abstinance
of strong drink was concerned. . .  No doubt upon his return to hearth and home, he'd consequently
have his better halfs rolling pin to contend with for his repeated shortcomings and oath-breaking!

The Patre hesitantly nods his approval as he speaks . . .

"Aye!  I'll go with to the Temple of the Huntress and goddess o' light in order to
discover whom the vile Assassin tis tha we must face!  If we know whom art adversary tis, it'll
make it a bit easier to protects artselves and allow us a means o' cutting him off from this ere
life as well as the next!

I shalt take my leave now and go with Texxor as thee bids Duke O' Lucimburic!"

Patre Scopulos ambles behind Texxor with his Agnon in hand for support . . . while
following him to the Were Temple.

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

"I love Raviniacum too, and I personally hope King Theoderic and Aelasuria will choose to live there," Rita tells Chara. "Of course, it is not my decision.

I know what you mean about guilt over having wealth and comfort. Until I left Arras, I had no idea of the extent of suffering and deprivation so many people are experiencing. I think, why did I get to grow up in safety, never lacking anything I needed while so many did not? For a king to feel this way is rare and a great gift to his subjects. It is one reason why the gods favor him, at least so I think.

When do you think we should announce the formation of this fund? I would like to give all the visitors here for the wedding the chance to donate to it while they are here celebrating the wedding."

Chara thinks about Rita's fund idea, and timing, and says:

"I think it is best that it be announced at the wedding, don't you?  Where all can hear it."

"Yes, I agree," Rita tells Chara. "But we need to determine who will make the announcement, and who will manage and oversee the fund. I am willing to manage it, but there may be long periods of time when I am away with King Theoderic, as this war is far from over. Perhaps you should administer it from your palace in Raviniacum. It is imperative the money be kept in a safe place until King Theoderic determines how and where he wants to use it."

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

"Well, you will make the announcement," Chara says.  "Certainly. And as for those who would administer it in your absence... yes, you travel often, but there are clerics who do not.  There is the priest who lives by the forge, on the hill upriver from Raviniacum.  There is his daughter, who is a priestess, the one with the ferret. I am sure they would not refuse the responsibility."

They are interrupted by an Elven girl.. a friend of Aelasuria's, from Geneva.

The security plan devised by Texxor and others relies on confusion, and keeping everyone uncertain as to exactly when the wedding will actually take place.  But it is time to get ready.  They have already found Aelasuria.

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

Raude Parisi came here to but by good fortune, has found Rita, who needs to know the news she brings from Arras.

Rita knows a lot about Raude Parisi, the high priestess of Venus, one of the most well known and colorful people in Arras.  But she does not know her well.  The priestesses of Venus don't seem to overlap the clerics of Pluto that much, in activity and lifestyle.

But nonetheless, she has brought the news. On the day of the Solstice, the priests and the Temple of Pluto chose a replacement for Pelion.  They had quite a dilemma this time.  None of the front runners really wanted the job.

”Perhaps it is the way of the Temple of Pluto,” she says.  “Solemn in outlook, not given to enthusiasm.  One hardly wishes enthusiasm in a priest who serves the god of the dead, right?    They considered Seti, but it was felt that he would be wasted, sitting in Arras.  Evroul was rather outspoken in his refusal, and he watches over the holiest temple to Pluto in the land, practically under the nose of the Emperor.  Choosing him… that would have all but abandoned such a critical sanctuary.  Leondra, the daughter of the late high priest… smart and dedicated but lacking in broad experience... your father struck many as an excellent assistant to the office of High Priest, and not necessarily a great High Priest.  Honorius himself held that view, so he told me."

That in itself might surprise Rita.  She hadn't ever known her father to socialize with the somewhat flamboyant priestess of Venus.

”Almost, almost he became High Priest, Rita, but Leondra won by a slim margin.  I am not sure if I approve of such a position passing from father to daughter like a dynasty, but I do not make the rules for the Temple of Pluto.  There it is.  Leondra is your new high priestess.”

”There is more you should hear.  There is a war on,” she tells them.  “And some may think that it is the clergy against the Emperor’s demons and Blackguards.  But we are not united, and in fact, the war is between the Emperor and only those among us who have chosen to resist.  It has become complex.  It is no longer a few sects, who refuse to accept the Emperor.  Each of the Temples, more or less, is divided.  Some will fight, some see no good in fighting.  I have done what I can to sway hearts, but I think now the lines are drawn.  Be careful.  There will be clerics who come to you with a different message than I, and it may seem full of compassion and practicality.  They are not evil.  Not corrupted by the Huns… not as far as I know.  They think the gods will pull us out of this fire, but on their own time, and this is not that time.”

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

Off to one side, Petra listened to what was revealed by the Venus-priestess.  The one whom she addressed was another who bore the trappings of Romano clergy, though apparently some other God. Pluto -- if she grasped the gist of the conversation?  The grim, foreboding Olympian Lord of the Underworld.  Though, Petra knew that Lord was of a different character than the fully malevolent Hel of her own Gods.  She was not too versed in Roman religion, but she knew that much.

Apparently power within that hierarchy had changed hands, and the Venus-priestess had mixed feelings about it. But, it was the second portion of what she said that truly grasped Petra's attention.

It was the very first time Petra had heard it put this way.  It gave the entire war a different orientation.  She spoke once there was an opening where she was not interrupting:

"We servants of the Aesir and Vanir are not trained to await our Gods to do the work. Nor are we shy about engaging the enemy, when it is truly the wisest course.  Or, the only course at all.  I have served recently with the army of the Saxon lord, Heolstor Strang.  I was assigned to that duty by High-Priestess Kandralde, of Eostre's temple. You are the first I have heard speak of the war, in these exact terms.  If there more you could tell me?  Have you any knowledge of the enemy's specific plans?  Their targets?"

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

After the wedding dinner, either that night or early the next morning, Rita approaches Raude Parisi, ready to hear what she has to say and hear what is happening in Arras.

"How is my father recovering from his injuries?" she asks, managing to get in a question before Raude can even begin to speak. She knows fully well that this could be considered rude and even disrespectful, but genuine fear about her father's well being makes protocol the last thing on her mind.

Once she is assured of her father's well being, she listens carefully to Raude. Oh, yes, the vote for the next High Priest of Pluto. Completely preoccupied with the wedding and the Solstice, she had let the subject temporarily slip her mind.

It has been more than nine months since she left Arras.

"I know my father didn't want the job," she admits. "He sent me a letter about Pelion's death in the demon attack and about the vote to choose a new High Priest. I still don't know how he knew I was here with King Theoderic," she adds, hoping to get an answer. "The letter was sent to Lucimburic; we came back here after visiting Aelasuria's family in Geneva and convincing the Geneva elves of the danger the Huns pose."

Rita had not exactly been certain she wanted her father to get the job. What would happen if, as High Priest, he invoked his authority over her as a priestess of the order and required her to return to Arras? That would create a major dilemma.

"My father confided in you? I didn't even know you two knew one another except in passing. I don't see why my father would not make a good High Priest, and I say this as a cleric, not as his daughter. Though his holding that position could create problems for me..."

Having voted for Evroul, she cannot help but feel ashamed when Raude says that choosing him would have amounted to the abandoning of the Temple in Catolacus.

"I voted for Patre Evroul because he has the wisdom to understand the nature of the demon threat and the need to oppose it. He and I spoke in the spring when I escorted King Theoderic, who wanted to honor his late father and brother, both of whom are buried in Catolacus. But I never considered Evroul being High Priest to equal an abandonment of that Temple. I just thought another cleric could watch over it."

Upon hearing that, Raude is likely to think of her the same way some of the other clerics of Pluto in Arras do--as a child who is too young to be involved in such matters and make smart decisions. Rita does her best to hide her insecurity from Raude, but chances are the High Priestess can see right through her.

"Mater Leondra," she says, thinking aloud. "She was Bishopress of Vipiacus, so she does have leadership experience. I wouldn't see her getting the position as evidence of a dynasty. After all, we did vote; her selection was not automatic. I highly doubt it the beginning of a pattern."

Leondra is a good choice, she thinks to herself, until she remembers. The stolen memories.

Her face turns pale. "This is a serious problem. Not because my father didn't get the position. We discovered that the demoness Zerova and the blackguards have been using a strange magical moss to steal clerics' memories. We managed to save Xybezza, a priestess of Pluto, just as one of the blackguards was trying to drown her in freezing water and asking her about Arras. But only after some of Xybezza's memories had been taken. The group that defeated Zerova recovered jars of the moss containing stolen memories. There is a way to gain access to those memories--by eating the moss. One of that group--I think a bard named Rory--did just that only because we need to know what the blackguards have learned from our clerics.

The memory he recovered belonged to Leondra. Zerova found her in Vipiacus and used the moss on her. She asked Leondra about Arras, about the Temple of Pluto, about her father. The way the magic works, the moss can take a memory even when someone tries their hardest to resist. Zerova wanted knowledge of Pelion's living quarters, his actions. And then she took the memory of her stealing Leondra's memory, meaning Leondra has no knowledge of any of this having happened."

Rita is calm but near tears. "Zerova and the blackguards used the memories they stole from Mater Leondra to kill her father by sending those fire demons to attack the Temple of Pluto. When I heard this, I knew without a doubt that Leondra must never be told about this. It would destroy her. She would feel responsible, and she did nothing wrong...

But now, she is High Priestess. That changes everything. This is something the High Priestess should know--but not Leondra the woman. What do I do? I do not even know if I count as a member of the order anymore. In Geneva, I was contacted by Lady Proserpina. Lord Pluto assigned me to serve her. For all I know, I am the only cleric of Proserpina in the world. Patre Seti believes this is very significant. But I have no idea what he would suggest we do about Leondra."

As to the rest of Raude's report, of course Rita is aware there is a war on. She has fought in several of the battles.

"Why would any clerics approach me about this? I am not that important; I have been a priestess just one year. And I haven't set foot in Arras for quite a while. I know that those who advocate against fighting are not evil, but they are wrong," she says definitively. "The gods are pulling us out of this. That is just what Patre Evroul and I talked about. The gods are here to help us, but first, we have to call upon them. Look at everything that has happened this past year. Theoderic commanded a small, renegade force, and now representatives of every race have flocked to him to support his fight against the Huns. Today, he is king of Belgica, and the Huns' invasion of the Ardennes has been thwarted. The Ardennes elves have reconciled with their human neighbors after sixty years. Unicorns and their riders are back. In several battles, we have had direct assistance from River Goddesses. If these things are not evidence that now is that time when the gods are acting to free us, I don't know what is."

There is one more thing. "You say my father confided in you. Please, I need to know. What is his position on this? I promise, I will keep it between us. I asked before I left, when I still didn't know much of what was going on, but he wouldn't tell me. All these months, I've been wondering. Please, tell me what you know."

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

Raude does not have much specific news of her end of the war. Other than one crucial fact:  The clerics themselves have become targets.  Priority targets.

”It’s not the same kind of war,” she says.  “No armies.  Just spells and shadows.  We have a problem now and we know it.  Arras is too big.   There is too much to know, too many people to trust every one.  There has been talk lately that those of us who are certain, those who will oppose the Huns, should relocate.”

She looks at Rita.  Obviously, this will mean more to her than Petra.

”I know what you must think,” she says.  “Arras is our place.  Leaving Arras would be a sign of weakness.  But… it might be what we need.  I don’t know, yet,”

But the news of the memory stealing moss that Rita brings forces the issue.

”That’s it, then,” Raude says.  “Our secrets must be open to them.  Some of them, at least.  Who knows what?  We are in terrible danger as long as we stay where we are.  We have to relocate.”

She has one more thing to add for Rita:

"As for your father confiding in me... there have been hard times, recently.  In these times, people often make new attachments, quickly.  People confide in those who were almost strangers but a few days ago."

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

Is Raude proposing that all the clerics leave Arras?

"But where would everyone go? If everyone who opposes the Huns leaves, the Huns will invade and desecrate our temples and use them to sacrifice members of our community to demons! If the clerics leave, they have to put warriors in charge of the temples, to protect them and the people in the city. I still have friends there, children who lost loved ones too young, who turned to me for comfort. I have relationships with these people. They cannot just be abandoned!

Here is what I don't understand,"
she says fervently to Raude. "The demon attack on the Temple of Pluto was clearly a violation of the peace treaty. It gives Arras legitimate reason to withdraw from that treaty. Why won't Bishop Garrax do that? Is the decision solely his, or would it be made by some sort of council of all the high priests?

The Huns have specifically been targeting the order of Pluto, and I don't know why. But what do we do about Mater Leondra? Do we tell her what was done to her and risk her very well-being, or do we keep it a secret just between us?"

Having been very focused on the intense conversation with Raude, she had not noticed that Petra had joined them until the priestess speaks up. Obviously, Raude did not object.

"I agree with you," she says to Petra. "I don't think waiting for the gods to do the work is the Roman way either. It sounds more like an excuse being made by those who do not want to resist.

Petra, you have just heard very sensitive information. If Raude and I decide to not share it with Mater Leondra, I trust you will not do so either."

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

Raude rarely looks so serious.

"It will not be all of us," she tells Rita.  "Just those that are committed to opposing the Huns.  Staying is dangerous for us, and for the others.

"And we should  not be going together, that will make things easy on the enemy, gathering all the targets in one place.  We should disperse, to places that are more easily defended.  It will be harder to do what we have to do.  I imagine we won’t be able to recruit or raise funds… but raising funds has been harder these days, anyway.  A lucky break by the temple of Minerva… most of us are seeing the coffers emptying further and further."

(She is referring here to the recent discovery of a lost treasure by Seti, which has been a boost to the temple of Minerva.)

"So we need a few places.  My preference would be temples we already have, and are in safe places, but we may have to explore a few new options, as it were.  There is an added danger to the people wherever we move in- we would be bringing the war, at least a small facet of it, to them.  I do not like to do this.  I may have no other choice."

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

What Raude is proposing will take a lot of careful planning and strategic thinking.

"The Temple of Minerva has many clerics out on quests at any given time. I know because my sister is one of them. Perhaps their priestesses can help in this effort, as planning and strategy are their strengths."

Raude has not answered Rita's critical question.

"But what do we do about Mater Leondra? Do we tell her everything about how her memories were stolen and used to kill her father? I don't like that idea at all; I prefer she never be told, but how else do we convince her that the danger is real enough to leave Arras? Would it be wrong for me as a member of the order to keep such a thing from the High Priestess, or would it be better if I protected her from it?"

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

"I know nothing of this Leondra," supplied Petra in reply to Rita.  "I have had little concourse with the Roman clergy, at all.  Expecting a Dwarvish Patre, in service of Lord Mars, who has aided our effort. Patre Arctos, who is here, I believe, if you are familiar. But I know him not well, and we do not communicate a great deal."

Plainly, it was a sensitive and fate heavy matter, this changing of power, that this pair discussed.  Of a foreign temple and its politics, that she did not understand in whole.  Petra wondered what it would have been like, had her own father been a cleric before her.  On the whole, her relationship with him had been a fairly simple one; welcome contrast to the complexity, sometimes exasperating subtleties, of relating to her mother.  While it might have been a beautiful thing to have shared with him, overall she was just as glad it was not the case.

Itinerant priestess that she was, all this talk of multiple temples, and their evacuation and defense, were complicated matters that were alien to her own practice and form of worship.  Well, as yet, anyway.  Because one of the things she had been tasked with by Kandralde was the founding of Eostre's temple. Though when there would be opportunity to focus more wholly on that, she knew not.

She added for the others: "I can understand from what I have heard here, that it is not for broad communication.  If I pass it on, it will be to others whom I honestly feel must know.  My own efforts involve confrontation and countering of this dire enemy, anyway. I did not know they were targeting we clergy; but I was quite aware they are the ultimate foe, above the Huns.  Thus, it changes little in my present plans." Petra considered a moment, then spoke one more time.

"Beyond that I fight in this war too, I do not know what other aid I can offer you.  Except, that perhaps...depending upon where some of these clerics wish to go, they might be able to travel with our army, for protection.  Not a good means of staying hidden; as obviously the enemy is well aware of us.  But there is strength in numbers. And we have taught plenty of Huns, and Demons too, that we are no easy mark."

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

2) Raude sighs with the mention of Arctos.

“I may have heard the name mentioned.. I don’t believe we have met.  But the clerics of Mars are often hot headed, brash men.  That is why there are so few remaining.  Historically our cults have been close.. now, things have to change.”

She thinks about what Rita has told her concerning Leondra.

“I would let her know.  It is fitting, it is correct.  Wouldn’t you want to know, if it was you?  You do not protect a high priest or high priestess, you count on them to protect you!”

Raude has another angle here, of course.  Back to the subject of evacuations…

(Technically, this next part would occur at a later date.  A little Hollywood style compression, here.)

“Theoderic has his sights set on a temple complex.   Aquae Granni.  It belongs to Apollo, and is a place of sacred hot springs.  If this can be secured, it might be a good place for our clerics of Apollo to seek refuge.  It is theirs, after all.”

And here is where the GM takes a detour into etymology and the philosophy or the divine in this game, again…

One of the ways historians link words is by the known “exchanges” between certain sounds.  For example,  P, B, V, F form a family.  D and T form a family.  R and L form a family.   A word with a P and a T can change, over centuries, to a similar word with a B and a D.

And so we have the ancient Germanic god Phol.  God of Light, Healing, various aspects of goodness.  The name is linked to Centuries later, the Norse version would be Balder.  But the Celts had a god of healing called Borvo, associated with hot springs, which is connected to our modern word “boil”.  But possibly, they link up.  And it is known that Borvo is identified with Belenus (the B-L) again, and Belenus with Apollo (P L, and P’s and B’s are “family”) .  More obvious when we know that Apollonius is also a form of Apollo.

And Palo in Finish means “Fire” and substituting letters within the sound families, Palo = Fire.  Add to this Baal, or Bel, used in a good portion of the middle east to mean “A deity”.

So we have, like Eostre, another very ancient god/concept appearing in different forms to different cultures:  A god of sun/warmth/fire/healing.

Why the long explanation here?  Because Petra is Frisian, and the Frisians are aware of this.  To them, their Balder is Phol is Borvo is Belenus is Apollo.  And Petra has always had a thing for hot springs.

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

"I don't know where we go from here, but if we split up into various groups, your skills as a cleric will be needed," Rita responds to Petra. "Are you in the service of King Theoderic? If so, he likely will want you to go with one of the armies. If you have not pledged yourself to his service, it is well worth considering though of course, the choice is yours.

I am not familiar with Patre Arctos. He is not from Arras even if he is a cleric of Mars. Is he here in Lucimburic, and is he in the service of King Theoderic? If he aided the efforts against the Huns, then at least he is a priest we can trust though Mater Raude is right; clerics of Mars are often too eager to rush into battle."

Rita honestly does not know whether she, in Leondra's position, would want to find out that she, however unwillingly and unintentionally, had caused her father's death.

"Mater Leondra may be a High Priestess, but she is still human. Such knowledge--she will blame herself. The way I see it, we all protect one another. Being told of this could possibly compromise her ability to perform her duties as High Priestess. I am not saying she is weak, just that such knowledge could compromise anyone's performing their duties, no matter how strong they are.

And just who should be the one to tell her, if that is what we decide? I cannot go back to Arras. I have obligations to King Theoderic and to the orphans in Raviniacum.  Truthfully, I don't want to go to Arras. Aelasuria is my best friend, and she is not welcome there because she is an elf. That makes me not feel welcome there either

Where is this Aquae Granni? Is Apollo's temple still in the hands of his priests? I agree it would be a good place for Arras' clerics of Apollo to go. But what about clerics of the other orders? A sudden exit by a large number of clerics will certainly look suspect to the Huns. How do you propose this evacuation be done? Can it be done in secret but quickly enough to assure every cleric's safety? Traveling in winter is not going to be easy and could prove dangerous.

This effort will require the planning and strategy skills of the priestesses of Minerva."

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

"Heolstor Strang, of the Saxons, is the mortal lord to whom I have pledged loyalty and support.  Of course, I have heard of Theodric.  His reputation precedes him, these days.  In a very good way.  I will consider your suggestion, but would want to consult with Heolstor, before making any such decision.  Possibly, Heolstor himself might do so, which would pledge the rest of us under him. But, that will all depend. We have never discussed it before."

On the topic of Aquae Granni, and its particular deific association:  "Eh - you don't say? Ah. Hmm."  Plainly, Petra's interest was engaged.  "That sounds a very worthy endeavor, to be certain. Something I could certainly find purpose in aiding.  And I believe my own Gods would approve of.  I must reconvene with my lord, and learn our next plans.  If those do not conflict, then I believe I would enlist to aid you in this."

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

Raude has never been to Aquae Granni.  But she knows something about it.

"In old days the gods made the magic springs that bring heat from within the Earth, and gave them the power to heal and refresh.  Aquae Granni is such a place.  it is sacred to Apollo.  His power was there before Romans came, though the people there called him Grannus.  The temple was simple at first, but the Romans rebuilt it.  They enclosed the springs.. there are several of them, I think, with the most sacred being placed in a secret inner sanctum.  White marble buildings, fountains and columns, tiled mosaic floors... the things you would expect.  The priests who were there when it was taken by the Huns... well, that was seven years ago, I think.  A few might be at Arras.  But they are not the adventurous kind of priests.  It's hard to gird in armor one whose life was managing a sacred bath."

Rita has invitations... from Raude, to help with her planned "evacuation", and she knows that she could help with the Aquae Grannis mission, but there are other concerns.

Theoderic knows Rita would want to go with him and Aelasuria.  But  he knows Rita is the first one to support any humanitarian activity.  And he knows that the number of people with healing abilities is small, and they are a resource that has to be very carefully assigned.

He also knows, Riordeg thinks about her the way he does Aelasuria:  If he sent her into some danger, and he wasn't there, he'd be crushed, and unable to function, constantly concerned for her but unable to do anything.  Where Rita goes, Riordeg must go as well.

And he knows they would both want to go with him... but there are promises to be kept.  They meet sometime later.

“Rita,” he says, “There is something very important I need you to do.  We told Scolo that we would look after the people in his village, and get them away from there, because Mestenon is practically in sight of Lutetia Parisiorum and the Emperor.  Kyriel will be assigned to this and Byron will be going with her, because she has some strange and useful magic.  But they have no healers with them.  Now, me, yes I'm going where there is danger, but there is Petra and Graehl and they are both clerics, and there are the Unicorns.  We will not want for healing.  But if Kyriel and the others run into trouble, there is  no one else.  And there are innocent people who need to be rescued, and I know that's something that always calls to you.  So I must ask you to go on this quest with Kyriel.”

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

Everyone is getting moved up in time, to the point where everyone splits up and adventures begin again.

Rita does not stay in Lucimburic as long as the others.  She's got a mission, and she has to hitch a ride to Aurelianorum with Raude Parisi, High Priestess of Venus, who has recently learned the divine technique of “wind walking”, allowing her to travel great distances at high speeds.

Why Aurealianorum?  Because its much closer to Mestenon.  Otherwise it could Rita a month of travel to get there.  And... because the Academy, through Syanthus and Kyriel, volunteered to help.  Scolo is a little bit.. off.. and there is concern over peculiar magic he left behind, or let loose, which he may not remember.  And with Scolo, that can be said about his breakfast.    So they figured, the help of the Academy of Aurelianorum.

So after a few weeks, Rita had to give up the watching of her Orphans to Entherin and Chara.  Probably for the best.  Rita has learned the hard way that potion crafting is made much harder when little children are underfoot.  Fortunately, Lady Babette was understanding, and they managed to put a couch over the damage before Mergyon came by.

Possibly, if she has time in Aurelianorum, she can get some work done there.

Riordeg goes with her, of course.

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

"Of course," Rita answers Theoderi emphatically. "I will go wherever you believe I can best be of service. But how are we to rescue people, some of whom might be ill or injured, in the middle of winter? Where do we take them?

There is also Melissa. I assume she will be coming with us. And what about Riordeg?"

She is genuinely honored to have so many invitations, but of course, she will go wherever Theoderic sends her--though she is glad he isn't sending her to Arras or Lutetia Parisiorum itself, a sentiment she shares with Riordeg.

At least she got to spend some time with the children, including celebrating the New Year. She could easily spend the whole winter at the beautiful palace where practically everyone she loves is in the same building!

As for the mess from disrupted potion making, she offers to pay Lady Babette for the damage and does not reprimand any of the children. They just want her attention, given how long she had been away.

This new mission is full of surprises. Aurelianorum--she will be a cleric in a place filled with wizards, possibly other strange wizards like Scolo. She asks Kyriel to tell her a little about Aurelianorum, just so she has an idea of what to expect. Is the academy the entire town, or are there non-magical ordinary people living nearby? Are there any temples or clerics in the city?

She hadn't expected Raude to come along either.

Assuming Raude also spends the interim weeks in the palace, Rita asks her about her role in this mission.

"Are you bringing us because you can do it quickly with the spell, or will you be staying in Aurelianorum and joining us in this effort? I've heard that some of the people in Mestenon suffer from strange, magically-caused illnesses, and I'm already thinking about how they might be healed. I think it was Kyriel who said some are 'brain sick' as a result of Scolo's 'unsane' magic. If you can cast a Heal spell, you might be able to cure them, as that spell cures all illnesses including insanity. In that sense, it would be good if you stayed, since I'm nowhere near being able to cast a spell of that power. But if you're not staying, I would appreciate any suggestions you might have for curing these people. I am already thinking about the research that might be involved."

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

Kyriel manages to find a little time to answer Rita's questions. "The Academy isn't the whole town. Not by a long shot. It's an important part, granted. They teach more than magic too. Basic reading and writing, history and mathematics. The ordinary people there are somewhat used to magic, so they aren't too surprised when someone does something magical.

As for temples and clerics? There's a shrine of Hecate there. My best friend's boyfriend is a cleric of Pluto."

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

"It sounds like the Academy teaches a lot of the same subjects the school in Arras does," Rita says. "That makes sense since the school in Arras is run by the Temple of Minerva, and some of the clerics are also wizards, like my sister. She probably knows something about Aurelianorum, but as usual, I have no idea where she is. Katrina is always off on some dangerous adventure fighting powerful demons."

Hecate? Could Arabella be there? Rita remembers her conversation with Arabella at Midsummer, when Arabella spoke about her connection with Hecate. There is even a remote possibility Rita and Arabella have common ancestors in Camaraco.

"A shrine to Hecate. Any chance Arabella is there? She was in Raviniacum at Midsummer, and we had a fascinating conversation. Some of my ancestors worshiped Hecate, and there is even a chance we could be distantly related. I would love to meet her again."

She is surprised to hear there is a cleric of Pluto living there. The order of Pluto does not have that many priests, yet she seems to run into a lot of them.

"A cleric of Pluto--do you remember his name? We had a cleric of Pluto visit Raviniacum at Midsummer, and I think he was from Aurelianorum. Is there a temple of Pluto in the town?"

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

Kyriel shrugs when Rita mentions Arabella. "I don't know where she is. I wish I did, since she's a good friend too."

She smiles when asked about Rivia's boyfriend. "Of course. His name is Isaniko. He and Rivia have been together for as long as I've known them."

OOC: I the player can't remember if there are any temples to Pluto in Aurelianorum but Kyriel would know.

"Then if one of us learns news of Arabella's whereabouts, we should share it with the other one," Rita says.

She remembers Isaniko and Rivia. Both had been in Raviniacum for Midsummer. Rivia had been less than friendly to Rita, but she had given a donation to the orphanage, and that was far more important.

"So it was them in Raviniacum at Midsummer. I think I somehow inadvertently offended Rivia because she...well, she didn't seem to like me very much. That was when Melissa was still a blackguard, and I think Rivia thought I was being too hard on her. Rivia did donate money to the orphanage in spite of whatever personal feelings she had about me, and I very much appreciated that.

If we do see her in Aurelianorum, let's keep this between us. It's possible she's forgotten whatever upset her back then, and I do not want to be the cause of any problems."

Re: The Grand Hall of the Palace of Lucimburic.

Kyriel nods. "Though it is hard to get messages across Europa. Gods know how hard I tried to send word to Aelasuria about the assassin."

She nods again. "Yeah, that was them. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Rivia isn't one to hold a grudge. I suppose so, but I don't think she'd be too worried about it."

After pausing a moment, she gives Rita a serious look. "Mater, I have a few questions. When you talk with the dead, can you pick who you talk to? Could you maybe talk to a particular famous person or someone's parents?"
