Cabreus House Inn:  Old Forum'

Characters settling down here should check in here.  Literally.  In the Foyer, on the 1st floor.

The Old Forum has a sense of timeless classic elegance that...

The buildings look really old, but they still look great.

They are richly ornamented stone facades, with imported marble from Italia and elsewhere; columns with capitals flanked by carved floral scrolls, bronze doors, window boxes, some of which still have flowers.  In the very heart of the city, it escaped the damage of the last round of warfare, the worst of which fell in the southeast corner.

Once, this was "the place" to be in Massilia, and the wealthiest people owned the buildings here.  Over time, many moved to the sprawling properties overlooking the sea and away from the busy, crowded harbor area.  But always, some of the rich preferred the atmosphere of the inner harbor area.

(Not at low tide, though)

They live in tall urban mansions facing the Old Forum.  The Braccia and Tetonus families have the two biggest townhouses here, and there is also the Fansanus House, and others.  Of the major guilds operating in Massilia, the Perfumers’ Guild (which also covers the soap makers), the Jewelers’ Guild, the Vintners’ Guild, the Shipfitters’ Guild, and the Tavernkeeper’s Guild have their Guild halls here.

The Cabreus family was extreme wealthy... up until about a half a century ago, and then, their best remaining asset, they turned it into a very upscale inn to support themselves. with the Visigoth invasion, their fortunes plummeted, as they lost almost all of the  extensive  vineyard and orchard properties they owned.  With their Old Forum townhouse
They maintain their house by keeping it as boutique tavern and lodgings for other wealthy families.

The national treasury of Burgundy has leased an entire floor, with services to be provided by House Cabreus as needed.  This is a very quiet, refined place that deals with a very wealthy clientele that does not wish to endure the common riff raff of ordinary taverns and guest houses.  It is commonly used by visiting official emissaries, rich merchants, nobles, and other high status travelers.

Cabreus House Inn:  Old Forum'

Bryon sat at the front desk, reading her book. Reading might have been a strong word because her book, titled Cosmopolitan, was really just a leather bound collection of portraits of beautiful woman in wonderful cloths. There were not many words, only the name of the model and where the portrait was painted. Still it was Bryon's most favorite book in the entire world. She loved to look at the pretty cloths and dream about what it would be like to wear them...to a ball...with an escort. Her escort would be a handsome young prince who would be madly in love with her and give her all sorts of pretty things, and most importantly he would make love to her thrice a day.

When the bell rang she was to stand and ask "May I help you?" She was to make everyone feel welcome and do whatever the butler asked her to do. Really he rarely asked her to do much. The fact was that she was gorgeous and many people came to the Inn simply to look at her, and sometimes they would bring her cloths. She loved it when tailors brought her new cloths. They always asked her to wear them for no charge. She never really understood why, but when she wore something it was a very short time before she noted that lots of other women were wearing the same thing.

She did not remember exactly how she came to be here. She knew she had been here for several weeks. As best as she could remember she was on her way to somewhere else...she was never sure exactly where...and that she had either gotten lost and ended up here or she had gotten tired and decided to rest. It was very likely the later since she could not remember where she had been going, resting here had been so delightful she had just decided to stay. After a few days someone asked her if she would sit up front and greet people. She liked the idea and they gave her money for this...why anyone would give her money just to sit and look pretty and greet people was beyond her but she liked it so she kept doing it.

Scrumff lay snoozing in her lap. Every so often she would stroke his fur. She loved the way his fur felt. Sometimes she would just hold him to her face to feel the softness. Scrumff loved those times best. Any attention from his mistress was good attention. So here she sat, waiting for the little bell above the door to ring and so she could stand and greet someone.

Cabreus House Inn:  Old Forum'

The “Patriarch” of House Cabreus, or its remnant, is Larzus Cabreus.  He’s rarely seen, though.  He is a bitter man of middle age, who never got over seeing his family and fortune brought to ruin over the years (although it should be noted, “brought to ruin” in this case means brought down from the dizzying heights of great wealth to the awful day to day existence of the upper middle class, the Inn is a prosperous business).  He handles the financial and legal end of things, but he is usually in the guest house, where he mopes a lot.    Most of the actual running of things is in the hands of his wife Emilia.  Their three children, son Fabio, son Martin, and daughter Persilla, (oldest to youngest) work as the Butler, Porter/Handyman, and Maid, respectively, along with a few servants.  Martin’s wife is the cook.  There is no room for the Cabreus house to sit back and enjoy the leisure of the rich anymore.  There are also a few young grandchildren running around, though they are usually kept clear of the guest areas.

Aside from the Kingdom of Burgundy having leased a full third of the Inn's guest capability, the rest of the inn is over 90% occupied, a fact that puts them well in the black, currently.  Larzus reluctantly attributes it to the hiring of their Hostess, Bryon.  She does very little, actually, and isn't asked to do much, and it may just be incredible coincidence, but things really did perk up after she came on board.

The most recent guest arrival before the current batch is the captain and owner of one of a very successful merchant ship, the Windreaver, based in Kition, Cyprus, and making a layover here as it waits for certain cargoes.

When the boat stops at Lugdunum, Gondioque casts bread and pours wine onto to water. Rhodanum Pater, thank you for a pleasant voyage. May we treat each other gently and be at peace. She repeats the rite at Massilia.

At Massillia, workers are waiting to store Gondioque's “merchandise” in a public warehouse. And a carriage is waiting to take her party and the personal goods to the Cabreus House Inn. There she checks in and inquires about the Inn’s routines so the routine and her activities clash minimally or not at all.

The little bell rang. Bryon stood and spoke as her eyes moved up, "Welcome may I help..." her eyes fell on Gondioque, "you?" This woman seemed oddly familiar. People hardly ever seemed familiar, even ones she knew well. This woman though was oddly very familiar. "I'm sorry, have we met? I'm Bryon of Helvectia." She gave a short curtsy.

She shook her head, pushing the odd thoughts away. "Welcome to umm..." She looked down at one of the little cards, "Cabreus House Inn. A pleasure to have you here. We are nearly at capacity, but I'm sure we can find room. Will you be staying with us for very long?"

The well-dressed young woman smiled and inclined her head in acknowledgement of the curtsy. Perhaps, Mistress Bryon. I have been to Basilia. In any case, we are apt to be seeing each other often. I'm Ambassador Gondioque Bourgogne of Burgundy. I believe we have space reserved for us...for an indefinite, probably long, stay.

Bryon smiled and nodded right along with the nice lady. She had beautiful hair, like spun gold, and pretty eyes. Normally Bryon preferred men, but this woman was very pretty. Bryon began watching her lips, the woman's voice seemed to elongate as the music in Bryon's head began to play and she spun off into a fantasy involving being a handsome prince herself and dancing with the pretty woman who...

Ambassador Gondioque Bourgogne of Burgundy

At first these words hit the same barrier of fantasy that the others did, however some part of Bryon's brain began screaming. Of course Byron fought to hold the fantasy but the screaming eventually shattered the fantasy, which was rather flimsy because Bryon had to imagine being a boy which was nearly impossible.

The fantasy shattered Bryon was left with the screaming which once the words became clear it caused Bryon to focus. Her eyes got large as she made a connection and said "AH-HA!" She pointed at the woman, and shouted, "You are in my book!" She picked up the book and began flipping the pages until at last yes there was indeed a very well painted picture of her in a very pretty off white dress (see Gondioque's avatar). She turned it and pointed bouncing on her toes in the way she did when she was really REALLY excited about something. "See...SEE! It'syou. I'veoftenwishedIhadyour beautiful hairandwonderfuldress. Gondioque laughs. Quite a compliment to be recognized by a painting. So often the sitter fails to live up to the art. Like makeup in a way, I suppose.

I have no prince, nor husband King. I do have two brothers, both married, married to wives who would search their innards with a dagger if they strayed from the connubial bed...I tell no secrets. Wit Kings it is different, but my father is faithful to his vows...all of them.

She looks Bryon up and down. Your beauty differs from mine; be happy with it and that it is so. 'Tis said "For every lad there's a lass," and we women—men too— would be boring if we looked all alike.

Indeed, I shall be friends with you—and your enthusiasm.

Is our suite ready to be occupied?

Bryon frowned. Not married? Perhaps she just needed to meet the right fellow. Bryon smiled brightly at the lady's compliment, "Why thank you."

When the Lady agreed to be her friend, Bryon thought she might just burst. She bounced, reaching out for the Lady's hands "Oh that is just splendid! I do so love having friends, especially new friends, but then of course every friend is a wonderful thing."

The Lady asked about a room. Drat...Bryon had been off in her own world when the Lady had been talking. Well there must be a room and it must be ready so Bryon just smiled and nodded, though she obviously has no clue whether the room was ready or not. "I do not know. It is my job to greet everyone and make them feel welcome. Can you believe they pay me for that? I can't but I am not complaining. Perhaps Fazaboo will know." Obviously Fazaboo is Fazio, and he is lucky that she remembered the first three letters of his name.

She went to the proper rope and pulled the handle ringing the bell to call Fazio. "There, now Fazaloopa will be here shortly."

Cabreus House Inn:  Old Forum'

Fabio Cabreus, had he lived two generations ago, would have enjoyed a leisurely life as a son of a gentry family.  Not a senator, but certainly a respectable eques.  The things he had to do now, servants would have done.  And servants would have managed the servants, mostly, he'd spend his time politicizing and bartering goods and favors with peers.

He knew little of those times, the Empire was already teetering and unstable when he was born, and his entire life had been in the chaotic post-Empire order, or disorder, with various kings competing for the lands the Romans left behind- and more importantly, the people and resources of those lands.

Burgundians, Romans, Vandals, and two sorts of Goths, Visi- and Ostro- were the main powers competing, and the wars had cost the family dearly.  Still, Fabio knew.

Somehow, Bryon managed to live the life of a woman of the upper class, it seemed.  She did fairly little, and yet, the elder Cabreus saw the family's ledger book entries turn from red to black, and credited her with it.  Like a fascinating art display, she was mostly decoration, but a decoration capable of drawing people in.

This sometimes bothered Fabio, who considered Bryon exceedingly and undeservedly lucky.  So, knowing that most of her job consists of making guests feel welcome, he presses her to keep at it.

Upon his arrival, he informs Godioque and company that the Kingdom of Burgundy has leased the entire third floor for Gondioque's use.   Their belongings will be brought up for them, courtesy of Martin Cabreus.  Maid service is by Persilla Cabreus and their servant Donna.

He asks if this make-shift embassy is to be a publicly known or secret thing. If it is to be public, he puts Byron in charge of acquiring a Burgundian flag, or a reasonable facsimile thereof.  This, he says, falls under the scope of "making guests feel welcome".

Gondioque thanks Lord Cabreus for this solicitous welcome. (The use of "Lord" may startle him; she explains: "The times may be hard on a family, but in you the blood runs true. Who knows? Fortune may amend.")

She considers the flag idea. We most certainly are to be publicly known. I plan to host small events, and I can see the sense of having part of your fine establishment be known as, in effect, Burgundian territory. I think...if you approve...hanging a my colors against a third-story wall would serve best. I also suggest You place a Visigoth flag or standard somewhere prominent to show your loyalty. As it happens, I met somebody on the voyage who can create my colors in a proper size. ... Consul de Wildnis, after we settle in, please go to Master Pedlar and ask him to attend us here.

When Gondioque's small party is alone in suite, she tells Swift and Venitia to search floors, walls and ceiling for peepholes and such. Gongioque also engages in the search.

Bryon is not stupid or soft headed. She is actually rather intelligent and highly imaginative. She is so imaginative that she prefers her own inner world to the one around her. It is only by sheer coincidence that she recognized Gondioque from her book. Fazio, his name having gone through several transformations in her mind to names which she found far more interesting, asked her to find a flag for some country that started with a Bur.

The Lady added to the instructions by giving her a second name...Vis something and Pedlar. She tried very hard to remember this but the stew in her mind just sort of mashed it all together. She of course smiled and nodded as Fazobabloo gave her instructions and then as Gondioque added to them she even nodded to those. Then she headed out...

In the well appointed common room of the Cabreus House, the old family atrium which is now the bar/restaurant/lobby for this little inn, one would also find a few of the current guests, often:

The man the Cabreus's keep referring to as "the Captain", evidently an owner/captain of a merchant currently waiting here for something.  Most merchant ships are not captained by their owners, the owners are wealthy traders who employ them.

Laeyix, a female Half Orc salt trader from Lugdunum, who stays here because, though she is closer to the Orc culture than Human, and is well connected in Lugdunum, she finds conditions for Orcs traveling, especially females, disgusting.

Danico, a Human adventurer/trader, a Helvetican, who apparently had both good and bad luck recently, having acquired a lot of wealth but being injured in the process.  He's taking it easy for a while.  Massilia is a good place to spend money, lay low, and think about what's next.

The nearly seven foot tall Orcish looking fellow presents himself and with nods and smiles to Fabio who might wave him on as though wishing to not be bothered. He carries any luggage required by the new party. He keeps his eyes low or averted most of the time and has an air of gentleness about him.

Though he is large this Orcish bellman is dressed in a clean and respectable dark suit that almost looks like a coachman's livery dark brown almost shoe polish trousers and a pale blue lightweight blouse that is covered with a soft leather brigandine dark blue stained with small burnished bronze studs and open with a flap down the neck and upper chest to keep him cool while he works. The seaman's longcoat that he hung beside his walking staff is mildly faded in the back but no stray threads or dirt. He wears boots that have been folded in and cut to be more like the light shoes of some sailors and he walks quietly.

He lifts even heavy trunks and gear with ease carrying them up and placing them as directed. He speaks only when spoken to with a low almost shy voice.

Druk gets thanked and receives four copper pieces.

When she's satisfied the room is secure and Swift has gone on her errand, Gondioque talks with Lord Cabreus, as she calls him. She inquires about the routine and the staff. She also inquires about whether a messenger service is available. Also, she inquires whether the bellman might serve such a role. (She has met Ooks before.)

Then she repairs to the lounge or dining are and meets (perhaps) three of the other guests. She tells them what diplomatic capacity she's acting in and that they can contact her for help in matters pertaining to Burgundy.

With each she swaps news of events near and far: Experienced or observed, on good authority, or rumored.

Druk and Bryon are the only available messengers here.  Bryon, of course, is risky- she tends to get lost, confused, or both.  They caution to never trust her with verbal messages.

Each evening, the Cabreus House Inn serves a meal for the family, and those staying here.  There's no menu, no choices, it is simply "tonight we are having chicken baked in a crust with herbs" and those who don't want it are free to make their own arrangements- the clientele here is generally wealthy enough so that this doesn't matter.

The servants get to eat this too, but at what is clearly the Servants' Table, because they need to be close to the dining guests, and the servants include the members of the family who are attending.  Cabreus House family members, depending on status, are both servants and masters of the house, a fact which explains why they are much more lenient and generous to "domestic help" than most upper class families are.

Once a week they do bouillabaisse, the traditional fish stew of Massilia, having been invented here by the fishermen. One can find it being ladled out into bread bowls in the little stalls around the harbor, but Cabreus House Inn uses a more elegant version.   Today is bouillabaisse day.

The other guests are here as well, even "The Captain", who claims this is "normal fare for any seagoer, thought I'd find different here."

Bryon managed to find some wonderful kabobs, chicken and beef roasted on wooden sticks with veggies in between, and offered some to Scrumff who waved her off. He planned to hunt mice this evening. She returned as the others were sitting down to eat. She found even the Captain was there. She had her sights set on him even when he first appeared. He was handsome and dashing and he had money, the prefect man for a short term romance and he was a sea Captain and that meant he would be leaving soon enough.

Finding him seated and getting ready to eat, she sat beside him. "Hello Captain, so good to see you. How has your time here been? I know a way I could make it more enjoyable." She ran her hand up his forearm, obviously flirting with him, but being subtle about it, at least as subtle as she ever could be. She batted her eyes, smiled, touched him in subtle ways, and generally gave off the "AVAILABLE" code women have given to men throughout history. She leaned it, whispering, "I could dance for you." Her smile and lifting her eyebrow, hoping the open ended way she way talking would lead him to conclude that dancing would not be all she would be doing...

For here and now, "Ambassdor Bourgogne" will do in formal situations, "Lady Gondioque" in more intimate situations as in this triclinium, "Godioque" when with me alone or with my personal associates.

Now, I guess there may be others in Massillia with your beneficent personality. Do you know some such who are capable and trustworthy?

"As I said, I have need of people who can carry messages and maybe packages...ones who will do this without tarrying and who will be faithful to the job. Such people would have to be willing to be told what to take, where to take it, and whom to give it to. It seems to me that...if there are to be more than one or two...different sorts of people: Ooks, Orcs, Humans, little people. Free persons would be good...maybe slaves too if they were glad to have a fair owner who treats them well. Something for you to hear, however: In Burgundy there are no slaves.

"Come to think of it, persons with excellent memories would be good. Then some messages coudl be told to the messenger and not written down.

Cabreus House Inn:  Old Forum'

The guest known as "The Captain" has only been here a day and a half.  He looks over Bryon.

"Woman, since I've been here I've wanted to take you back to Cyprus with me," he says.  "Because that's the only way anyone there is ever going to believe me.  If you're going to dance, you can't do it properly without music, and there are no musicians here.  And I understand that's be design.  Cabreus house isn't a commoner's ale hall, no, that's where my crew has holed up.  But if you can arrange the kind of gentleman's music that belongs in a place like this, I'll pay for the musicians.  It would be relaxing."

Druk does know a few people in the city that meet the descriptions.

Awesomeness!

As they have dinner and Druke is speaking with Gondioque and Bryon he also pays attention to the others. He identifies the importance of the princess and is shocked but he also watches the Captain, the half Orc lady and the human adventurer to identify the important people he can focus on for further interaction.
22:05, Today: Druk rolled 23,19 using D20+3,d20+14.  Sense motive, gather info.

After thoughtfully nodding Druk tells Gondioque. It will be done, Ambassador, give maybe 32 silver to start and I will get ink and paper to write your dispatches. A scribe will make your letterhead in the morning and we will have some couriers available for regular deliveries. I will tell you how much will cost each day or delivery after I get started. I know who can go to the Over-Tyrant I will talk to him tonight. Is there someone you want to interview each messenger? We will give a list of guilds and trade offices tomorrow and give you options of verbal or written message for them.

Druk looks to the Captain when he speaks. Musicians? Druke will find musicians. Give 17 silver for short notice. They will play after dinner.
He knows it may help to have musicians anyway and he likes getting jobs for his friends.

He looks to Fabio or one of the other Cabreous’. May Druk return with musicians to play here?

Gondioque hands over five gold and 20 silvers. I'll ask for an accounting. I can do the writing for my messages. Pardon me if it's an insult, but can you read, write, work an abacus and use Roman numerals? If not, perhaps you would care to be taught.

We'll need paper to keep accounts on. We'll need a jeweler who can work metal in fine detail to have a sigil created to stamp each sheet. And I think each potential messenger should be interviewed. Also, we'll need a manager if it seems good to expend this messenger effort.

Bryon smiled at the Captain's words. "Cyprus? is that you ship? I suppose that would be fine, but if I'm to entertain sailors I should think that would be extra." It seemed that the Captain had miss understood her entire offer. Well so much for being subtle. She leaned into him, purposely pressing her bosom against his arm. She spoke softly, her lips against his ear.

"Quiet ones," the Captain says.  "I don't need a music hall.  I need a skillful player who knows that the music is just the background for Bryon to dance to."

He looks at Bryon.  "You can do slow and elegant, yes?  I've seen the way the Germanics and Celts can bounce around, and tonight I have no need of that.  Cyprus is my home, my ship is the Windreaver.  It's a good ship, she outran Vandal Pirates to get here.  She's made me a lot of money, and clearly, lady Bryon, you want me to spend some of that on you.  Well, I am a merchant as well as a captain.  Let me see how you move when the music starts.  Allow me to judge before making the deal."

53, Today: Druk rolled 25 using 1d20+14.  Gather info .

Druk bows his way out, and keeps his head down as he exits mumbling goodbyes to the other guests, he does not make eye contact with the Half-Orc woman, but deferentially avoids her as he makes his way outside.

Hmmm..Think...this will be a good night He mutters to himself, the Woman no the Princess gave him much more than he asked, but she will surely ask much and this venture is new. Druk is not a businessman, he is at least smart enough to know that.

But Simzic, yes - Simzic is a businessman he knows how to make money and not just complete a job. But Druk needs someone who can present messages in a regal manner...He thinks of Talacos, a human ex slave posing as a foreigner, living in the Foreigner's quarter.  Talacos is a clever, adaptable and charismatic person who can seem to be anyone even more so than Druk, who is also skilled at this. But Talacos might rob him, even when they are friends the little man is often not transparent in his dealings, but surely if Simzic is a partner with Talacos no one will abuse the other. They'll need other workers and delivery persons, perhaps a few sailors or the masons, that will wait for tomorrow.

But first Druk needs to find musicians, for tonight, he has only a little time so he will seek out the Perdix family, surely the youths will have a trio he can hire for the evening. Druk makes his way there to seek out a string and light percussion trio or quartet for the Inn.

Bryon continued to flirt, shamelessly, which was pretty much how she lived her life. She ran her fingers long his forearm, offering him teasing smiles, intentional brushes with her large bosom, and the like. His question brought a laugh like chiming bells from her, “I think that can be arranged.” While she was doing this she noticed strange written on her arm, actually sewn into her clothing. She must have allowed this so it had to be important. She read it and realized it was instructions for the Butler. She pulled the little cloth off, the stitching came loose and allowed her to remove the little note and took it to the Butler. She pardoned herself from the Captain, promising to return quickly.

She found the Butler and handed him the note. “This was sewn to my clothing. I am sure it is important. I know that I must return tomorrow for the Burgundian Wine flag.”

Gondioque writes her first two messages. She writes each in Latin and in Orc, and she makes fair copies of each so that she encloses copies of each letter to each recipient.

To His Majesty Amaric, of the Visigoths, King:
also
To the Esteemed Harridog, Tyrant of Massilia:

[Two separate letters with the same text.]

Greetings!

My father, King Gundobad, has posted me to Massillia to promote continued good relations between our two kingdoms, to further peace in Gaul, and to help with any problems related to trade from the Inland Sea to Burgundy without interfering with Visigoth control. To these ends, I am authorized to receive and to respond to any communications regarding these matters or such matters as you think best to share.

A favor: Please inform me of any customs or laws—besides those which are common to any well-controlled realm—which, were I to violate them, would create problems which other wise would not arise. In particular...I am residing on the third floor of the Cabreus House Inn. I ask permission to display my Burgundian colors on an outside wall of that floor to make my presence better known. If it is desirable, the Visigoth standard could be shown, say, on the roof so misunderstanding would not arise.

Sincerely,

Princess Gondioque Bourgogne, Ambassador

After setting up the Kietus and Sirlia Perdix Aka Kieth and Shirley Partridgeto play music in the Inn. Druk spent his evening with Talacos and Simzic and a few others to set up the runners in a small stall behind Semzic's own business near the Inn. Talacos himself dressed in finery delivers the first messages and They work together to create a fee system and begin getting their name out.

The next day, while others may be enjoying fancy finger foods in elaborate costumes Druk and his partners having delivered their first messages have named the business Nuntius Partum Celeri (or rapid message delivery) which we will call NPC for short.

Druk spends the day getting paper, a small scribe named Gorni, a simple shop with painted signs and a few of his Orcish friends such as Nuvrog and Rhum, a young couple who met as stone workers and are trying to make some cash on the side.

Gorni completes the Bergundian letterhead. Talacos, Druk, and Simzic put together a list of merchants and houses that might use their service. Gorni also creates several flyers for Nuvrog, Rhum, Druk and Talacos to deliver to potential customers to get their name and services out.

Gondioque meets with Druk. She mentions that Nar Problem Celeri fits the initials.
                                              No Problem Fast/Rapid
Agenda:                                       Orc German   Latin
 How's this?                                  ------<
Sufficient capital? Druk only.                |
                                              |  NP
                                              |
                                              ---------->
C with NP inside Logo
But the business name is in Latin.

Operating without disturbing Visigoth governance. Meeting with subordinates.

Business philosophy/code of conduct. Meeting with subordinates.

Distinctive garb/ emblem/ headgear?  Meeting with subordinates.

Carrying messages, invitations...how about small packages? Meeting with subordinates.

Fee schedule? Meeting with subordinates.

Before the meeting, Druk discusses these matters with Gondioque.

[Don't think we need to go into any great detail, enough to have enough substance for role playing. I think such a business will contribute to this unusual game.]

OOC: I guess this is before you go to the party?, Is Latin not the main language of commerce in this area?

Yes, Ambassador - you gave us more than enough seed money, we will seek to earn it back for you. Your messages were delivered.

I've set it up with two partners, Talacos and Simzic. I am supporting where I can in my best way, They arbut I am unclear - I thought you meant to arrange an independant business to serve the needs of your office as well as others. Are you thinking this should be a Bergundian business instead?

Talacos and SImzic are good partners and we have a good team under them. I should be free to do other work in a few days.

Note I’m totally open to doing more RP on this and you being the partner owner or whatever you want but Ben seemed to indicate lack of interest in getting too many details. Also it would maybe be a distraction or conflict for your primary diplomacy role. Those two NPCs are ones that he created so I am planning to let them run the business because Druk is not made to be a merchant - I look forward to seeing how Ben presents these guys before messing further with it.

Re:  Cabreus House Inn:  Old Forum'

In summary, Gondioque's thoughts about NPC:

Thinks the name could reflect messenger service's impartiality: Visigoth, German, Latin. Fair and square service for all.

Thinks she should be a friend of the business, consulted as Druk (a go-between), Talacos, and Simzic feel desirable. Gondioque will finance or help finance and should receive a return on her investment. As a customer, she'' pay the scheduled fees.

Messages delivered without snooping into contents; oral messages not blabbed.

All members of the business are to trust and help each other on business matters. Therefore, each member of the business should have identification or personal knowledge of teach other.

One other thing: Gondioque hopes that return on investment includes news, rumors, etc. picked up in the normal course of the lives of those in NPC.

[I think that fairly well sets things up for Ben to divulge information as he wishes...or add color sometime.]

[Good job, Druk.]

So frustrating! I wrote I huge post and it disappeared when I dropped my phone!

I will sum up

Druk takes Gondioque’s ideas about the name and logo to his partners as they work that day.
He knocks out some minor requirements.
He also recalls the idea of getting a Burgundian security person the chance to see the business and meet some of the team. Ambassador, you said you may wish to have someone speak with us to ensure confidence. he says meekly. Please send that person at your convenience.

Druk keeps talking with people as he sets up and delivers his opening announcement and messages.
During the day he seeks out a number of rumors and interesting facts.
22:23, Today: Druk rolled 25 using 1d20+14.  Gather information
Find rumors

When he learns of the party later he decides that it would be a good place for free food, and a chance to learn more. So he checks his sources to identify an Orc minor official that would be invited but would not go to the party.
If he can figure out a person to disguise himself as he will go to the party as that disguise.
22:26, Today: Druk rolled 25 using 1d20+14.  Identify a mark for disguise

Druk would learn several things:

First, the Palantus Luncheon is not a party for outsiders, it is a quiet passing of the business torch within House Palantus.  Visigoth would most definitely not be welcome. The presence of ANY Orc would be a concern- people would have to stop talking about the one thing the luncheon is most focused on, the Palantus business network and how the new "agents" will handle it.

Second, setting up a courier business becomes the rumor of the day on the Massilia street.  It is the perfect job for the poor but streetwise youngsters of the city, and there are lots of them.  Within hours of the word getting out, Druk has dozens of human youngsters knocking on his door and asking about courier jobs.

Re:  Cabreus House Inn:  Old Forum'

In the Cabreus Inn, the wealthy trader known as “the Captain” watches Bryon dance… for a while.  She must make a performance check to impress him, and with him being a seasoned traveler he is not easily impressed.  She will have only one chance- his ship will soon be ready to depart, and he is in and out, making arrangements, seeing to a few purchases and hiring a few extra hands over in the foreigners’ quarter.

Druk organizes his courier service, eventually settling on three children.  The children of the lower class Humans in Masillia have a hard time.  There is no school or organized care for them, and parents are generally both working hard.  Many tag along with their parents, helping them do whatever they do, but if they cannot (or will not) they are often simply let loose for the day.  Hopefully they will find something useful to do, and turn up for dinner.

“Messenger” is a coveted job for them.  Legally earned money.  The pay is generally in copper pieces, but for a child, it is enough to put them in a special class of “kids with money”.

The first thing they must do, of course, is let people know that there is a messenger service here, and that is actually something The Captain can come in handy for- he needs to have information delivered.  He needs to send word to the various sailor’s hangouts in the Foreign Quarter that he is looking for a few men, and he needs to send word to a few merchants that he’d like to arrange a meeting.

He suggests to Druk:  “Have you thought of employing Bryon?  There are times someone might want to deliver a message by way of pretty girl instead of a boy.  That’s a message in itself, don’t you think?  Sometimes it’s important to think about the bottle and not just the wine, right?”

Roll = 22

When Byron focuses on a person even without magic, she can make them feel like center of the universe, As if time and space itself is focused just on that person. Her dance is the oldest in recorded history, used to seduce Kings and Poor men alike. Her hips sway slowly, her arms move out one at a time, she stomps barefoot on the wooden floor. This is the dance of the Middle East, the Belly Dance, and she uses it on the Captain, because he asked her too. She ends with her hands on the back of his chair, her cleavage at his nose, and her eyes fixed on his own.

Bryon succeeds in impressing The Captain, who knows the rules that govern these things.  He's a mature man, and isn't at all interested in rushing.  When he invites Bryon, it is for the night.

Bryon also knows the rules.  He says nothing about payment except a vague reference to her being "worthy of gifts".  Anything more specific would be rude, for a courtesan of the upper class. So the offer is made, discreetly and indirectly:  Bryon to be his companion for the evening, and thereby entitled to unspecified "gifts".

Bryon actually finds Druk’s attentions endearing. Shy men at least in her experience, could turn into real stallions if properly coached. She stood and slowly...slooowly...stalked him. She purposely swished her body, wanting him looking at her as he was finally giving her the attention she desired. At the “close enough” mark she reached out and gently ran her fingers over his cheek and chin. ”Three things,” She held up three fingers and put them down one at a time, ”Same money you pay any other messenger.”

A step closer and another finger down, ”Something pretty but inexpensive, like a scarf or whatever, something simple.”

One last step and she is actually touching him body to body, except for the clothing, ”Lastly, and most importantly. In fact if I get this one I don’t need the others, ok? A kiss, you, not someone else, you and only you must kiss me full on the lips until I break the kiss. Take it or leave it.” She smirks, waiting for his answer.

Re:  Cabreus House Inn:  Old Forum'

The Druk/Bryon exchange is assumed to be the day after the Bryon and the Captain affair, as even Bryon cannot be in two places at once.  Though she might try.

Bryon has been gifted with two things by the Captain... well, other than that.  He leaves her with a pendant made of carved lapiz lazuli on a gold chain.  And, a little inside tip:  Things are going well for the traders now because the Orcs here are gearing up for a war.  So, they are too preoccupied to clamp down on people.  They are not asking about ships, so it will be on land.  And they are buying weapons.

This is odd, because the Orcs generally make their own- they are very proud of their abilities as weapon makers.  But they have asked shippers to bring them heavy crossbows, which are made by the Byzantines.  The Captain is convinced that "something is coming".

When The Captain leaves, Druk's messengers get employed as porters, hauling his things to his ship.

My father is a master jeweler, an artist with gemstones and precious metals. People come from all over to buy special things for special people. He is very important a member of the counsel of elders for Helvectia. My mother is a woodlands nymph. She capture my father and kept him for ten years.” She gives a mischievous grin at this, because it is clear why she kept him for ten whole years, he must have been an excellent lover. ”Their union produced me. Da says he loves me as much as his children by his wife and I believe him. Mum sent me to him after I was weened. I was returned to her on my tenth birthday, and I spent many years learning magic. I am not a wizard, all those spellbooks are just plain silly. I feel magic, it is in my blood I suppose. So then I went to the Elven Court and learned to be a Coutrsan, that is like a woman who is very...well...friendly for royal men. I know how to make people feel at ease, I have excellent manners, and...well I know about make up and cloths and such.”

As is typical Bryon becomes sidetracked, ”Speaking of cloths, you have very pretty cloths. My bosom wouldn’t fit in most of them unles I bound them very tightly, and even then they probably would not behave. I have a very difficult time with my bosom being naughty.”

She shifted back to the previous topic as if she had never left it. ”Well I decided that I wanted to marry, but not an Elf. They are nice and all but they lack stamina. I need a man who can make love to me at least three times a day, like The Captain!”

Gondioque makes sure breakafst if on hand, and ample.

"Ambassadors are nosy people. Besides, you have done Burgundy a favor.

"An unusual background, one to be proud of. Can you speak Elven and Sylvan? And have any of your half-siblings followed your father's trade? I'd hope so; such taste and skill should be passed on."

Gondioque's face is grave when she learns of Bryhon's magic abilities. "Be careful. You may run afoul of the Visigoths if yo use magic."

Gondioque laughs at mention of Bryron's breasts. "Have a mind of their own, do they? Mine are well-contained. Yours, They are ample for a man—or babe—to have comfort on. I'd call them "enticing"...for men, heart's ease; for babes, two founts of life.

"I'm expected to have nice clothes. Some of them are snug, like some roles princesses are expected to play.

"I've heard young men have the stamina; older men, the skill...if they play one a gir's body like a master of the lute.

Bryon smiled, "Elven yes, Sylvan no. Mum refused to speak it with me. I can speak Ork, but I dislike the taste of it."

She nodded, "Oh yes, both my brothers are apprentices to Da." She nodded at the warning on magic. She had been told the before. She wouldn't forget.

Her mischievous grin returned when topic turned to men, "Alll true, and sometimes you find a man who is old enough to be patient and young enough to have stamina. I do so love men!" Her grin is one of conspiracy, "Oh yes he did. I tell you now I will have him, he is just too delicious."

[Beach Le Clos. This beach is near the French town Marseilles, at a salty lake called Etang de Berre. This is not really a lake; it is connected to the sea by a small channel. This lake has the most shell beaches located in one place. You can find various black and white shells, and that is not all, the nature is amazing, especially bird life. It is very easy to reach, here are the coordinates for this beach 43°28'56" N; 5°7'35" E. Oyster shells are around too.]

Gondioque somberly says Druk is a serious person whose feeling run deep. Suppose you bed him, what then?

On a lighter note, she speculates Maybe someday we can open a trade route with Basilia for good such as those your family makes.
-----
When Gondioque is able to gather as many as seems good and are willing, she takes the floor.

As you know, my Father has tasked me with helping make Massilia strong, strong enough to withstand attacks by, say, Ostogoths or Vandals...and to do what I can without antagonizing the Visigoths...she smiles...or at least they will thinks the benefits to them outweigh any annoyances they may feel.

Now, thanks in good part to our friend Druk, we've started a messenger service that employs some people who are underemployed or whose lives are irregular. In particular, we has children running around on the streets. I've learned of a nearby beach covered with various types of shells and littered with molted feathers, and I know Massilia has oysters. I conceive building up a trade, shipping goods to the East mostly. Painted, arranged shells for things lid candlestick holders, jewelry boxes, necklaces, maybe even things like mosaics...whatever we can think of. There are all these street urchins; some of them have ambition, drive, and talent...and I hope sufficient honesty.

Some may have the impression that the Princess has mor in mind than she is disclosing.

[II"m thinking that this, if approved, woould almosst entirely be handled offstage.]

Bryon giggled at Gondioque’s question. Her answer is said as if obvious, “If he has the stamina for it, I shall bed him again. I’ve tough many a man to be good lovers for the women they marry, he shall be no different.” The princess went into territory she is unfamiliar with. Thus her question, “Is that not already possible?”

Bryon, if the Visigoths here are arming, I would think that some other orcs are arming also.

Gaondioque pauses and looks at Bryon. How is she taking this?

Glad to hear you don't want war. But you tell me the Visigoths are buying weapons. What for if not war. It's like this: When you feel the wind pick up and dark clouds gather, it's not too hard to predict rain.

Last night, I was at the Breakwater. A lot of the people looked tired. I hear the Visigoths here have  been pushing for people to work longer hours than before. When a person works longer and longer each day..and is tired to the bone...they make mistakes. And that leads to trouble.

Gondioque laughs. A funny picture came into my mind. Suppose the Visigoths are fighting and a big storm drenched them with rain and struck them with lightning. Probably put a stop to the battle.

Gondioque becomes serious. Bryon, I also want to avoid war and trouble. At least, if war and trouble come, I want some people to be safe. You can help at least in two ways: Tell me things you think are important for me to know and males carry messages from me as part of the NPC service. Now, a serious question: You like having sex with males. How choosy are you about which males?

[In this game, any actual sex is offstage. Gondioque is assessing whether Bron can be used as an infiltrator. "Pillow talk" Gondioque is also aware that Bryon can forget or can  be lied to.]

Then she just changed the subject without precursor. "What does my choosyness  have to do with stopping war and trouble?"

Re:  Cabreus House Inn:  Old Forum'

Druk realizes something.  Humans... and pseudo-humans like Elves... don't seem to naturally open up to him sometimes.  It's not that he's the stereotype of rude, crude half orc, in fact quite the opposite.  He's about as extroverted as Half Orcs get.  But today... he's off his game.

Now, if he had Bryon doing this... she's the exact opposite.  Both are appealing, in opposite ways- Druk, when he speaks, Bryon, when she stops.  So it stands to reason that if Druk isn't getting anywhere with gathering information, Bryon would.  He learns nothing about the inn guests beyond what he already knows.

He does learn that it is going to be another day, or possibly a few days before someone is scheduled to arrive here, so The Captain's room might be vacant for at least a day.  Travel being the strange and unpredictable thing that it is, travelers sometimes arrange for places to be reserved for them in advance, sending word via courier.  A river vessel is on its way south with a Halfling merchant!

At first Bryon pretended not to notice Druk. She leafed through her book, and came across a particularly fetching painting of a woman sitting on a rock which was situated on the shore of a beach. The Spray of the ocean behind her set off her fine features and the lute in her lap signified that she was a bard of some kind.

When Druk spoke she turned and smiled at him. "Other guests? No but I can try and find out." She cocked her head to one side as he spoke again. She reached out and put her hand on his, to emphasize their friendship. "If it's important to you it's important to me. I'll see what I can turn over." She closed her book and stood, starting to walk away but paused, "My price hasn't changed, one kiss. I hope you'll have it ready when I return."

Re:  Cabreus House Inn:  Old Forum'

Druk and Bryon learn what they can about other guests.

By the amazing magic of narrative continuity, it takes them exactly long enough to put them in sync with the other thread.

The Captain has left, but Laeyix, a female Half Orc salt trader from Lugdunum, is still here.
Bryon already knows she has stayed here a few times before.  She prefers this place because, though she is closer to the Orc culture than Human, and is well connected in Lugdunum, she finds conditions for Orcs traveling, especially females, disgusting.  She has some human preferences:  rats in the bedroom are disgusting pests, not late night snacks.  Laeyix is calm and aloof, enjoying the polished patrician style, here.  She gives the impression that she would have made a good human... provided she was a rich noble.  She doesn't talk much.

Danico, the Human adventurer/trader, is a Helvetican, who apparently had both good and bad luck recently, having acquired a lot of wealth but being injured in the process.  He's taking it easy for a while.  Massilia is a good place to spend money, lay low, and think about what's next.  He came here because among adventurers, Massilia is a place where one can sell anything no questions asked.  It will be heading out on a ship across the sea, where no one will ever follow a dangerous trail of "Where did you get this?" back and cause unwanted complications.

But that in itself says something.  If Danico came to a place known for trading without questions, that implies he didn't want questions.  There were, of course, other places he could have gone.  So perhaps Bryon cannot work the logic, but Druk can:  some of the things he sold might well have owners eager to get them back, but the trail ends here.  Danico also spent a day buying new clothes and gear- this, Bryon might notice.

The most recent arrival is appearing just now, moving into the room recently occupied by the Captain.  He is a middle aged, large and somewhat round man, a trader, a writer, and an artist.  Not a hugely known artist or writer, heck, who reads these days?  But from appearances, the kind of rich man who considers himself wise for engaging in these intellectual hobbies.

He's here for slave trading.  He's heard about some unusual slaves who have recently arrived, and wants to make offers on a few interesting ones.

Re:  Cabreus House Inn:  Old Forum'

There were always so many interesting people here at the Old Forum. Danico, a fellow Helvectian, seemed to have things he wanted to trade. She inquired if any of his things were "Magical Baubles" and if so could they work out some kind of arrangement where she would stay with him in his room...at night...in exchange for something that was magical. She had always wanted a magical bauble of her very own.

Even more interesting was the nameless fellow who was an artist. She had gone into great lengths about her experience as a model, a newd model, and how she had been painted and sculpted. She thought being a model was a lot of fun, because she got paid to sit or stand around naked and generally she ended up being made love to by the artist, which was a bonus. She suspected Danico would be a better lover, but she always wanted to be painted again.

When they were done she pressed herself against Dunk, "My agreed upon payment?" She wrapped her arms around him and gave him one her best slow soft and sensual kisses, the kind that generally left men panting.

Druk started talking but Byron was already lost in fantasy. "Do you think he will make love to me if he paints my portrait as a neud? I think he will, he won't be able to resist." She grinned as her fantasy became more lurid, and giggled, "Oh but sir, no clothing? Are you sure?" She giggled again, "Well I suppose if you are naked as well." Then she sighed.

Even in her daydream she went back to work, if you could call her job work. She waited for the little bell to ring, knowing it would disturb her fantasy but still...new people meant new adventures!
