House Mercator

You can go her if you are Titus, staying with Titus, or visiting.  House Mercator has made it clear they do not wish to be swept up in creepy political things involving undermining Visigoths.  They've stepped back from directly being involved in anything but their own affairs, though they are willing to arrange and support from the sidelines.

That being said, they wouldn't mind if Titus had a few guests here, as long as they didn't leave any trails that could be traced back to House Mercator.

House Mercator has a villa in the wealthy Carinade district, on the extreme southwest of the city.  This neighborhood is actually outside the walls, on the rugged hill overlooking the ocean, west of the Pharo.  Because of its beautiful views, and remoteness yet accessibility from the bustle of the city, it became the most popular neighborhood for the richest families in Massilia.  The Mercator property overlooks the sea, and is built around a wide terrace with a pool.

Not many Mercators actually live here.  They have their property here mostly for business purposes, and as a result it has lots of room.  Currently it is home to Filana Mercator, who was married to a cousin of Titus before his untimely disappearance at sea.  Their son, Milo Mercator, is only eighteen but a math and business prodigy, and manages everything they Mercators do here singlehandedly, at least from the administrative point of view- they have dozens of servants and workers, and a warehouse and dock in the New Docks district.

Despite his young age Milo is the "business geek" of Massilia.  He frequents the markets and docks, learning who is trading what, who is looking for what, and what prices are like.

If he took time away from business, he could be the Wall Street Journal of Massilia.

House Mercator

Titus had not been 'home' in years. If he stopped and counted them there would be only a few years, but given what has occurred in his life in that time...

Well, it seems like a life time. Nevertheless, he was excited to the place he was born. Being a Mercator having been born here does not mean he spent his life in this city. Rather he spent it traveling with his parents as they pursued their responsibilities to the house. Indeed, while this was the place from which he set forth into the North, he had not previously been in Massilia for at least five years prior. Still, his squire, Gian, was born and had lived here his entire life before setting northwards with Titus, so one of them felt this return a bit more profoundly.

Whomever decides to join them and experience Mercator hospitality was certainly welcome. If no one takes the offer Titus does not take offence. He expresses his interest in keeping in touch given the mission they all have together and wishes everyone well until their next meeting.

And then, once his luggage is loaded into it he waves away the carriage that had come to pick them up. Turning to Gian, "Come lad, let us walk the streets. It will be good to get the sea out of our legs and get a sense of this place again, eh?"

Even for Mercators it is hard to get a feel for the "mood" in the city by taking one walk, on one day.  Individual days have their quirks, they would need to build up their observations over time to see what has really changed in the time they've been away.

And in anything but trade and markets, Milo Mercator is not much help.  He is highly focused, and young, easily missing other things while he tracks the prices merchants are getting for lavender oil, pickled anchovies, and Burgundian wine.

But before they do their walkabout, Gian and Titus do learn something from Milo:  If anything, over the last couple of years, Massilia has actually become more prosperous, not less, despite the Visigoth regime.  Milo believes that as the Visigoths become increasingly hard pressed on several fronts, they are actually becoming more "pro business" because they need the money.  This is not to say that the majority of the humans here have it easier- generally, they don't.  But those in positions to make money are finding it easier.

On the other hand, a stroll the wealthy district in which the Mercator villa is located, the Carinade district, shows that all has not been well.  There are more abandoned properties than either remember.

Looking westward, they see that the Pharo Villas, the Salt Pans, and Pharo Cove look much the same.  Gian is curious about Pharo Cove- when they left, he was too young to enjoy the watering hole of the wealthy in Massilia.

Titus was very happy to see Filana and Milo. When he was last here, Milo's genius was just being realized so he is not surprised to see him holding such an important role. The news of what is selling and what price is not small intelligence as the insights will be useful back in Belgica.

When they have settled themselves and had some conversation with their hosts, he and Gian set out on their walk and when he notes Gian's interest in Pharo Cove he smiles, "The best way to get the sense of a place is a tavern, eh?"

They wander in the direction of the Cove with the intention of continuing their investigation.

OOC: I have lost track of years and numbers... How old is Gian at this point, Ben?

(OOC, I am assuming Gian is somewhere on the teenager/young adult cusp.  WHere do you want him to be?  If you haven't tracked it, no one else has!)

Under the menacing silhouette of the Pharo, Pharo Cove is the pleasure beach for the Select class.  On any given day quite a few wealthy Massilians will be resting here.  Just inland from the beach, Pharo Cove Tavern is their dining, drinking, and entertainment place. It is evening by the time Titus and Gian get here.  The beach is lit by the glow from the Pharo's light above, which sends down a reddish looking light at a high angle, making it hard to see outlines.  Titus doesn't remember the light having such a harsh look- has it been changing, somehow, in the years of Visigoth rule?

Then can make out the shapes of people on the beach, maybe a few dozen, but they cannot see details unless they approach.

But they go for the Tavern instead.  It's a sprawl of a structure, with newer components added to an ancient core.  The original Greek style villa is almost completely hidden.

Inside, it is almost empty.  Business must be very slow tonight, or perhaps it's just all out on the beach.  Titus recognizes just one person he remembers, Alsus Mucidia, who owns a large part of the farmland on the rocky peninsula to the south of the city.  There are a few others whom he does not know.  But it virtually empty.

A pair of bored looking musicians are playing very low key, slow tempo background music.

One other person Titus remembers; Fanclo Ancius, the innkeeper here.  On a busy night he would probably not be personally greeting people at the door, but tonight he is.

He is surprised to see Titus, and starts asking questions- is he back to stay?  On business?
Who is his young friend?- as he guides Titus and Gian to a prime table in a semi-private booth with a good view of the stage.

"What is your pleasure, Titus?  How can we welcome a Mercator's return to Massilia?"

Titus has placed a hand comfortably on Gian's right shoulder as he spoke, "We have returned on business, but when one returns to his family's home one can not help but take some pleasure in it, can one?

"Accordingly, we seek to remind ourselves of past pleasures this fine evening. Fine food and libations and perhaps a story or two. I seek to catch up on what I have missed!"

"I can't complain, Titus," Fanclo says.  "It's been good.  The Visigoths... they ask no more of us than Roman Emperors did.  Less, in some ways.  They can be vindictive, their ideas of justice too much or too little.  But we don't get sent off to war.  The Orcs insist on doing that all themselves.  Just... they do so much of it.

"They had a call out today.  That's when the Overtyrant- Harridog- tells the chieftains of the city that he needs an army raised.  Now, the next week or so is a lot of horse trading.  Every Orc wants to go to war, but Orc chieftains are wary about sending them.  The Orcs that serve them are their power base, and a chieftain who sees his troops slaughtered on the battlefield sees his power diminished.  Every chieftain wants to see victory, none want to pay the price.  So we shall see a lot of maneuvering and dealing. They may even come looking for help from us.  They are getting wiser by the day.  Still... I wonder where the next battle is.  Elves, Ostrogoths, Vandals... these days it might be other Visigoths."

They have nothing against Titus non chalantly walking back and forth to visit House Palantus.  As long as he doesn't drag the whole House, or Mercator assets into it.  In fact, he can be of great assistance to the party because of his background.  So, he'd be invited- that was the whole point of his returning with the group, actually.

Titus knows Fancio must answer that question delicately.

Some families are allied to the Mercators.  Of those, some have strong ties of shared histories, values, and even intermarriage, while others are linked only through mutually enjoyed business deals.

On the other side, some are unfriendly.  Again, the reasons and scope of the hostility varies.

But to Fancio, all of the wealthy houses are customers.  He can say nothing bad about any of them- too much can turn back on him.  He can't say anything bad about the Orcs either.

At least, not in public.

"You must know many families have prospered in this past year, Titus.  There are political complexities, and they seem to grow every year.  The Visigoths certainly do face their share of challenges.  And the more they are pressed outside... the greater the opportunities for those looking to.. to ease their burdens, locally.  Many of us have made very beneficial arrangements.  Not without costs, mind you.  Steep costs, at times. But, who wants to see Masillia fall to Vandal Pirates, or be wracked by warfare between Visigoth rivals?  We have to appreciate what we have here, no?  And it is glorious.  I hear there are quite attractive slaves brought in earlier- male and female.  I will have to pay the slave market a visit, see if I wish to put in a bid."

Titus appreciates the Innkeep's care in replying to his question; however, he would have hoped for a bit of 'goo'. He then realizes that he has been away for long enough that despite his former connections he must regain the same trust he once had.

He takes another sip, "Indeed? Do you know from where this shipment of slaves has come to us?"

A few people file in from the doors that face the beach.  They look a little inebriated.  One of them, though, Titus recognizes: Paulus Canias.  That family has been long aligned with the Mercators, building a mutual trust and friendship over the decades.  Titus recalls being invited to all their parties.

But once they get past the easy subjects of family and other pleasantries, Paulus suggests that perhaps they take a walk on the beach tomorrow, when the sun is out.

Titus finds something unexpectedly refreshing about talking to Paulus. In truth he has thought of the man from time to time, but the years since he was sent north have been full. Full, but admittedly lonely as there have been few of those whom he has befriended that had anything like his own upbringing.

Here, however, was a true peer. Whether or not the man would still be a true friend was a matter to be determined, but there was only one way to determine that. Accordingly, he is pleased by the invitation.

With a chuckle Titus replies, "So some things have not changed at all, I take it?

"Yes, let us meet again on the morrow! If nothing else we ought to strategize on what we wish the followers of Fama be nattering about."

Excusing himself he returns to his table and orders himself and Gian food. As they eat he finds himself quite pleased about running into Paulus and their meeting tomorrow. If nothing else he has remade contact with an old friend.

Once they finish if there is nothing else to be done they return to the Mercator palazzo. His intention is to confirm what he can about the Canias relationship and whatever gossip is to be had about Paulus.

After all you can take the man out of Massilia, but it does not seem likely that the Massilia may be taken out of the man.

House Mercator - a walk along the coast

The following day, as most of the rest of the cast converges in the Old Town at the Palantus townhouse, Paulus Canias and Titus walk along the sea.

The stories Paulus tells are strange.  Paulus himself doesn't fully understand it.  But he's been piecing together what he has seen.

"For many of us, myself included, there is no denying it, things have gotten better," he says.  "The Visigoths are increasingly concerned with their own politics and their own wars.  So much the better.  They need us for money, for food, for making their kingdom work, but they know that the harder they squeeze at this point the less they will get."

Titus senses that right about now, in a conversation, there is a "but..."

"But,"  Paulus starts.  And there it is.

"But it's not like it used to be.  More and more, the great houses... not just here, but wherever the Visigoths rule... are being drawn into their ways.  Almost as if we are being encouraged, deliberately, to embrace the callous and debased nature of the Orcs.  Entertainments that once reflected genius and mastery now appeal to animal instincts.  There is no longer any rebuke from beating a slave, an animal, or even a child- the Orcs think it is amusing.  Some of that... rubs off.  They still do not wish us to be warriors, but they wish us to have all the most vile and crude instincts of an Orc.  I know it sounds strange.  I cannot guess as to what they would gain from it.  I cannot fathom how creatures so simple themselves would think in such subtle ways... but I see it.  Slow, soft, coercion.  Act as they do, and they become more lenient to you.  More lenient than they are to each other!"

Titus listens carefully as they walk. He is careful not to interrupt as he want to absorb everything Paulus has to say. Only when the man stops does he respond, "You know where I have been for so many years, my friend?

"I joined Theodoric's war against the Emperor Zeodreeg and his Huns in its earliest days. What we learned, and to some degree the way that we were able to defeat them understanding it, was that what had enabled to Emperor to gain not only his throne, but control of his tribes were demons. Their patronage did not simply fuel their Orcish rage, but gave their priests magical powers and creatures. Once He was on the throne his patrons had not merely been empowered by the sacrifices and cruelties committed by His armies, but they now had influence under non-Orc populations.

"We fought several Humans and folk of other races who had come under the sway of the demons and through the power of their Hun minions they almost wiped out the churches of our Gods and the Holy City of Arras itself. We were able to stop or limit this, thankfully, and with the fall of the Emperor things in the North are hopefully returning to the civilization lost with the demon's rise."

Pausing he looks at Paulus, "It seems to me as if having now firmly established their Visigoth followers here they are now attempting to corrupt everyone else. Whomever the greater demon is behind all of this is, His goal is not just to have His Orc tribe rule here, but to expand his influence throughout the region and that sounds like what you are describing."

"Demons are out of my league," Paulus says.  "But they have not destroyed the temples here... not all of them, at least.  We still have a few, and a few clerics.  I suppose that if I wanted to learn about Demons here, I would start there.  But I would do so very, very carefully.  Perhaps indirectly.  The Visigoths are distracted at the moment, they have their own concerns.  But that line of inquiry is the sort of thing that would draw their attention, and quickly."

He looks around instinctively, to make sure they are still alone.

"The problem with being.. well... us, is that the Visigoths, or maybe its their demons, pay a little more attention to us.  No one cares what street urchins do.  No one even learns their names."

Titus sighs and then smiles with resignation, "Well, yes... Look, my friend, I do not mean to encourage you to start with a study of demons, but to simply suggest that what you have described sounds similar to what they tried to do in the north.

"Given quiet, subtle support to the temples and clerics that remain is one thing that might be done without raising a 'flag', if you know what I mean. They are likely to begin in the coming months to become more overt about their effort, at least that it what I have seen.

"I suppose they may not as the Visigoths are under the influence of other demons and their tactics may well be quite different. I suppose that one Demon Prince might learn from another's failure...

"Whatever the case, their goal is to bring the non-Orcs within this realm under their influence also. This not only makes them better servants of their servants, the Visigoths, but imparts unto them even greater power as the evil done independently by other races is no less useful than that which is done by Orcs.

"I think what helped us in Northern Europa was not simply that we had a leader like Theodoric, but that he found allies in Elves, Lycanthropes, Dwarves, Halflings, Faeries, and many others. And at the same time, those leaders not only aided the priests, but non-religious who did not wish to live in the vile world that would have resulted in the Emperor's victory. This enable to cohesion of spirit, if you will, and body that ultimately defeated Him."

Titus pauses and smiles self-consciously, "Forgive me, for I fear I am lecturing. To your point, though, urchins get away with a rather lot do they not? There is an advantage to being 'beneath' notice. My concern is that if things continue as you say they are the Visigoths will begin to start paying closer attention. If you are not able to build some sort of resistance now, it may be too late."

Titus smiles, "We did it in the North, did we not? Things are not the same here as they were up there at that time... I do not mean to suggest that this would be simple or without risk. Nevertheless, a few years before the Emperor fell the Emperor seemed invulnerable.

"If we can identify who their non-Orc agents are that is the place to start. After all, they are manipulating the Orcs, because it seems to be in their nature to follow their demon masters. Humans may certainly be manipulated, but it takes a bit more effort (and then, I should say we may actually become quite a bit more awful), so I think their loss is at greater cost.

"And, I believe, this is not only matter of whatever 'power' the demon uses in the first place, but in the fact that when other humans see how awful demon-tainted humans are it builds up a sort of resistance in them."

He pauses and smiles self-deprecatingly, "I think this is something I have never considered before, but this may be why communities un-touched by the demonic may be so much more likely to be manipulated by them, because in their naivete they are more likely to be infected... Talk of "what we did in the north" comes as a surprise to Paulus.  The news hasn't fully filtered down yet.  No doubt, what few travelers, mostly merchants, that could have passed it on were cautious.  After all, speak about the wrong thing, and one could lose access to Massilia... and much more.  And even though there is no love between Hun and Goth, perhaps Orcs did not want to hear of tales of an Orc emperor being bested in the field by Human and Elven armies. Such talk might inspire ideas.  So perhaps, to those who knew, it was best left unsaid.

"If we are all in trouble, you might as well tell me," Paulus said.  "We've known of battles in the north, but little else.  Just what did you do there?"

Titus gives a resigned shrug as he replies, "There are good Orcs you know. Orcs who do not abuse, if not outright kill the weak. (Well, let us admit that a bullying Orc is not the worst of them, but you get my point.) It is probably their seeming predilection for 'badness' that makes them such easy marks for the Demons that control them. In Theodoric's realm there are Huns left behind that we have permitted to remain and attempt to become part of our society, but they are in the minority and understand that if they wish to survive they must adapt.

"We Humans are so much more adaptable, are we not? Among us live the purest of the good and the vilest of the bad. Compared to other races (from what I have seen) we have the greatest capacity not only to go to extremes, but to change our way of being.

"And this is my point: those who you just described need to be shown what they are becoming. They need to see that while they have survived at less cost than others it is precisely the cheapness of that cost that is inspiring this indulgence of which you speak, because the slopes of Mount Indulgence are slippery. The sludgy rubble of abuse and murder and worse at its base are difficult to escape from one has slid down into it."

Pausing he runs a hand through the soldier's cropped hair atop his skull, "Look, my friend, perhaps I am being to generous with my comparisons between what is here and what was in the North. We were not in Lutetia Parisiorum, though some of us had escaped from that city before joining us. But there must be a way to offer constant, if subtle, reminders of what is being given away to the Visigoths.

"And, no, I do not mean to suggest that at this point outright violence against the Orcs would be useful, but if a thing like a popular song, for example, were to be passed around reminding people of the value of a difficult good deed that might be a seed. But, you know, a farmer does not just plant a single seed. (And what I describe would be only one element of a larger campaign.)"

He laughs, "This must sound foolish to you, because it is so small..."

House Mercator - a walk along the coast

Paulus huffed.  "If there are Orcs who are decent folk, with senses like mercy and justice, I have not met them," Paulus says.  "Only some who seem more tolerant and indulgent than others.  Even they... perhaps I've lived here too long.  I haven't had much time away.  And even that, you know... that's an indulgence they allow us, especially those of our class, because of the money it brings in.  They are not so easy with the poor."

He paused, thinking.
"The poor..."

That was worth another pause, while he organized his thoughts.

"There is some freedom, though, in having nothing worth taking.  The poor aren't watched.  Our class is.  We can't speak freely in our own homes, or in any place we might be overheard, that's why we're hear.  We are noticed, watched, followed.  The poor, on the other hand, are nameless and faceless to the Orcs.  No one worth their trouble.  We keep them in line, and the Orcs don't have to bother.  But they can come and go around town, and talk among themselves, with a level of freedom we don't have.  If you want to plant seeds, plant some among them."

Paulus, now thinking of how the Orcs watch over the people of the aristocratic class, became a little more nervous.  He looked around, for some sign that they weren't alone.  He found none, but it didn't calm his feelings.

"We're here too long as it is.  We don't want to draw attention, Titus, even here.  I would suggest it is time to call it an evening, and go about our ways, and think."

Titus smiles, "The poor it is, then, my friend. I think we both have much to think on."

With that he wishes Paulus good night, "I look forward to our next meeting."

He returns to the family compound feeling somewhat relieved. His conversation with Paulus has given him not only a better understanding of things here, but a few ideas of next moves.

Titus is humming a tune he heard at one of the last performances he attended of Jazelle and Cado's company. The duo are a fond memory, particularly the latter, and while he misses them and their performers it does occur to him that having them here would be particularly useful.

As he enters the Mercator gates he appears distracted as he is trying to recall where they last were and writing a missive to them in his head.

Hearing that he has a visitor Titus goes to meet her. He is wearing riding leathers having just finished his morning sword practice and had been about to break his fast.

He smiles as he enters the atrium where Gondioque had been left to wait, "Good morrow, your Eminence! After having spent so long together on our journey here, I must say that while I have enjoyed my return to this lovely city my hours have been somewhat poorer without your presence!"

Titus sees that Gondioque is attended by two lads. She gives them a few coins. I'll be here for some while, I believe. Buy something to eat and drink, and stand by. Gondioque smiles when she hard Titus' remark. Good morning, Master Flatterer. You look...competent, and hungry. May I sit by as you break your fast. If I know somewhat of you, I expect you've been busy. So have I. After you eat and otherwise refresh yourself, I ask that we have a tête-à-tête.

Titus shrugs, "I would not keep you waiting and I know that a warrior such as yourself need not stand on formalities, so please join me. I would be pleased to share my repast with you."

Turning to a servant, "We will have food in the tablinum. Please see that we are not disturbed."

Turning back to Gonioque, "Please come with me."

Leading her through the Domus he takes her past a shallow pool open to the sky that lays at one end of the atrium and into a room that is comfortably appointed with a desk, table and several chairs. He makes small talk about the history of the house, which has a storied role in the history of House Mercator. The walk is short, though (not more than 60 feet), so she is saved too many tales.

Taking a seat at the table he pours them both some wine from decanter on the table as food is brought in. Once the light breakfast is laid out he grabs a rolls and tears a off a chunk dipping into his wine before popping into his mouth, "So, how does this day find you, my Lady?"

Gondioque waters her wine.

"Probably busy. And if it please you, my lord, how about "Gondioque" and "Titus" when we're alone? Quite a lot has happened. She fills Titus in on events. [All: Feel free to tell me about omissions or inaccuracies.]

"I've established my embassy on the entire third floor Of the Cabreus House Inn—father leased it.  Maid service is by Persilla Cabreus and their servant Donna. Valentia, my personal maid, is in charge.

"Two people you should know attached to the Inn: Bryon, a hostess, and Druk, an ook. Bryon is quite the characgter: Voluptuous, actively so; scatterbrained, amusingly so. But she gets things done; there's more to her, I think...hidden. Still, she's goodhearted, I believe; and she attracts patrons. Druk is efficient, honest, and humble—and he has connections. From what I gather, he won't go looking for a fight, but would be formidable if fight comes to him. I trust him, as you will hear.

"I was at the breakwater last night and bought enough holy symbol wind chimes to put at every door and window of the suite. I told the vendor, 'These will remind us of the most essential of all goods: The air we breathe. And I shall dedicate at least some to Njoror.'"Gondioque leans forward and whispers, '.'

"Some young men with the lanterns were present. A helpful puppeteer said, 'The one with the curly red hair is Gallus.  His younger brother has been schooled for years now, and knows the writing and the numbers as well as any clerk.  Gallus...  well Gallus had the chance, but thought it was his duty to look out for people along the water.  It's a thing, these Lantern Boys, they are... well they are like the constables we would have if there weren't Orcs.  They try to keep people safe.  Good kids.'

"One of the Lantern Boy mentioned a teacher from the old temple of Minerva.  She's not supposed to teach; the Visigoths don't want her to; they closed the temple.  But she teaches... young ones.  Reading, writing, numbers, history, poetry.

"A woman selling baked goods mentioned that the orcs had a muster yesterday.  'Sometimes, the Orcs gather to get instructions from their chiefs.  Not usually Harridog himself.. he's like the Over Chief.  But under him, there are the war-bands, and each war-band has a chief.  Things have been quiet but sometimes, when they have a muster, it's because they are planning something, and that can be bad.'

"I met a shell-and coral ornament woman. She does good work. I also heard that there's a nearby beach littered with shells and such. this gave me an idea. I'll say about that in a bit.

"Yesterday I sent off two letters using a messenger service, which maybe will do portering too, I helped create...the idea and the funding. Each read:

To His Majesty Amaric, of the Visigoths, King:
also
To the Esteemed Harridog, Tyrant of Massilia:

[Two separate letters with the same text.]

Greetings!

My father, King Gundobad, has posted me to Massillia to promote continued good relations between our two kingdoms, to further peace in Gaul, and to help with any problems related to trade from the Inland Sea to Burgundy without interfering with Visigoth control. To these ends, I am authorized to receive and to respond to any communications regarding these matters or such matters as you think best to share.

A favor: Please inform me of any customs or laws—besides those which are common to any well-controlled realm—which, were I to violate them, would create problems which other wise would not arise. In particular...I am residing on the third floor of the Cabreus House Inn. I ask permission to display my Burgundian colors on an outside wall of that floor to make my presence better known. If it is desirable, the Visigoth standard could be shown, say, on the roof so misunderstanding would not arise.

Sincerely,

Princess Gondioque Bourgogne, Ambassador

I expect an answer in a few days...not prompt...you know Visigoths think delay shows their superiority. Foolish; delay sows distrust. Anyway, the letter gives me an argument if I step on any toes.

"I set up the messenger through Druk. It's called Nuntius Partum Celeri (or rapid message delivery) called NPC for short. He has worked with people named Talacos and Simzic and a few others to set up the runners in a small stall behind Simzic's own business near the Inn. Talacos himself, dressed in finery, delivered the first messages. They worked together to create a fee system and begin getting their name out. I'm, say, an advisor and silent partner. I've put money in and expect to get some money back. I also expect to be told of rumors and any news that may be learned incidentally, not by spying. Talacos, Druk, and Simzic put together a list of merchants and houses that might use their service.

"Druk also obtained paper and contacted a small scribe named Gorni, who runs a simple shop with painted signs and a few of his Orcish friends such as Nuvrog and Rhum, a young couple who met as stone workers who are trying to make some cash on the side. Gorni completed my Burgundian letterhead. He also created several flyers for Nuvrog, Rhum, Druk and Talacos to deliver to potential customers to get their name and services out.

"I set out some principles:

Operating without disturbing Visigoth governance.

Meetings allow subordinates to speak if thkey've a mind to. If opinions are called for, the junior person present opines first.

Impartiality: Visigoth, German, Latin. Fair and square service for all.

Messages delivered without snooping into contents; oral messages not blabbed.

All members of the business are to trust and help each other on business matters. Therefore, each member of the business should have identification or personal knowledge of each other.

"If you think what such an organization might amount to, keep on thinking.

"I've noticed that a lot of people are not well employed, so I have an idea: Collect shells; and, under instruction, make earrings, circlets, necklaces, bracelets, waist belts, and even anklets. With luck, Bryon and I can invent a dance that will show them off. Have some people make them and pack them for export. They won't take up much room in ships and could bring in good profit...novelty items.

"Finally, a faun named Florian and I were guests at House Palantus. Members of the house decamped. If they made it safely, they sailed far, far away. They deeded everything to us, but we two have not accepted. This evening, we'll go there to hear the house steward submit an accounting. If we accept, Florian and I will have to make arrangements and record the transaction. I expect there are entanglements, so I'm wary. I'd appreciate it if you'd accompany me."

OOC: Sorry for my quietude, Gondioque, but my professional life has obstructed my gaming life again, I'm afraid. Thanks for your patience!

Titus takes in the impressive tale that the Ambassador reveals, "So, you have established quite a network! I very much agree in your focus on the underclasses. The Goths seem to see the aristocracy as their tools, but ignore the poor as being powerless. I would be happy to join you at House Plantus, but just to be clear the purpose of this meeting is to learn why it seems things have disintegrated in the House?"

Taking a sip from his own watered wine he continues, "While I have not been quite as busy as you I have been doing some investigation into matters in the City myself. It occurred to me that in the same manner that we countered the Emperor's efforts to demoralize His subjects and  make them more manageable by taking over and turning around Zerova's Troupe, we might encourage songs and street performances that would encourage characteristics counter to the Tyrant's will. (You know, disrupt Her demon master's desire to corrupt their non-Orc citizens into becoming more Orc-like and whatnot.)

"Towards this end I have encouraged an old family friend who is concerned about things here to become engaged by promoting street performers. Encouraging them to tell tales and sing songs that will cause those who hear them to question things their leaders say and do. This will require some subtlety, granted, but it is Art and without subtlety 'IT' is not Art, is it?"
, he says with a grin.

RL comes first; thanks for explaining.

"The purpose of the meeting with the House Palantus is to ascertain whether Florian and I accept ownership. If so, there will be a name change. I'll have to be careful with my involvement; I certainly can't be involved in day-to-day activities. Anyway, I'm curious about why it, as I think failed. If there are creditors, the House may be bankrupt. I'm also curious about any entanglements the House has.

"Florian is a Faun; I'm unsure about his ability to run a House. But there is an Oc, one Druk, an employee at the Inn. He seems quite capable and has contacts. That's not to say that Florian shouldn't have a role.

"I disagree with the strategy of trying to undermine the Tyrant by, as you say, encouraging other races to show "characteristics counter to the Tyrant's will." I do like the idea of using the troupe but suggest that they use references to the helpful, protective things the Visigoths do or have done...both here in Massillia and elsewhere in the realm. This last is important, I think; it subtly promotes division among the Visigoths...I bode a battle between the Emperor and Tyrant is coming.

"One other thing: I'd like to see the populace be readies to defend Masillia against the Vandals. That shoudl be objectionable, and the people will be prepared more than now t9o act when it's time to throw off the yoke.

"Oops! One other thing...let us be careful to avoid being against the orcs as orcs. I somehow think it would be evil to have them exterminated. OH, and Ocs [spelling, peaceful Orcs like Druk]; I"d encourage them to marry and have children."

"As to how the singers and artists are used, I think you are misunderstanding.

"I have had a good deal of experience dealing with Demon-influenced populace against the Huns. Their influence is subtle, but ultimately makes it easier for those who might have bad instincts become truly evil and for those with good instincts to accept evil actions as permissible, even tolerable. What has been described to me as the attitude of the noble class of Massila sounds much like that of the Emperor's realm --that is, the through the Tyrant the Demons have taken hold already.

"Simply encouraging the common folk with stories in which the weak succeed against great odds, for example, works to strengthen resolve not to go along with evil things. This may certainly be done along with other themes and should not be obviously anti-Tyrant or Orc. As you say, the point here is subtlety... And like what we did in the North success will require an alliance of all who would resist what seems to be the overwhelming power of the Tyrant"

Taking a sip from his cup, "Of course, things here in the South are complicated by the nearness of the Ostrogoths. At least back then we had only one power to contend with!"

Smiling, "But forgive me for I seem to have been rambling a bit. It sounds as if you have assembled an interesting crew. Your meeting with the Palantus should be interesting. It is a shame what has befallen that House."

Draft because inventing some names.

Gondique smiles, an honest smile rather than a diplomatic one, a smile that let Titus see the teenager, not just a harrier of Huns in the north (a year ago around what is now Nancy) and the guarded courtier/diplomat. (By the way, she's armed with rapier (peace knot) and dagger.) Titus recalls that she has yet to reach her 19th birthday. (Some royal children may live a life of ease and indolence, but Gondioque—she must have been hard at work every day of her life.)

Then the artisan—her name is Kelyfea [shell-related], the slave market and see and be seen at the Pharos Inn?

They go outside to see Gondioque's young teens waiting:

Three lads: Ischyres, who looks strong and sturdy
Kidemonas, who stands straight and keeps watch like a guardian
Tachys, lean with long legs...the body of a runner

They look to be about one year apart and are brothers.
Two sisters: Adrasteia, who seems unafraid
Ophelia, who seems eager to do whatever Gondioque requires

Titus may recognize that all are descendants of the original Greek colonists.

"Lord Mercator of [name of your kingdom Belugia?], these are {naming them]. Obey him as you would me. We will be traveling in the city. If you think you should tell us something, please do so. Adrasteia and Ophelia, as you know, I will be arranging  your apprenticeship to Kelyfea if she approves. However, I grant you right of refusal; I dislike forcing people. Any questions?"

OOC: Mea culpa, again! I've no longer got the job that was causing such tumult in my life, so I'll have more time to be online. (Until I get another job that will cause 'such' tumult again...)

As far as names and titles, you would know that Titus was 1st Minister to Theodoric King of Belgica and was probably given another title, but Ben and I never really got into that. While in Massilia it is sufficient to call himself a Mercator and would have made that clear on the trip here.

Before they depart Titus will excuse himself and returns with his squire, Gian. Titus has also changed into clothing that reflects his standing as a merchant prince of this city. He wears a white linen toga with a pale yellow linen cloak with a silk lining. As usual around his neck a red silk scarf is tightly tied. He is not visibly armed.

Gian is somewhat older (mid-teens) than the lads Gondlioque has brought along. He fought through the Great War with Titus and carries himself with not only a martial air, but a confidence that the Princess will recognize from her own brothers. She recognizes his clothing to be similar to other high-level servants. It is obvious to her that he too is native to this city.

Standing somewhat closer to Titus is the golden sighthound, Felix, who is definitely not native to Massilia.

With a nod and smile Titus says to the three lads, "Well me, gentlemen."

Looking back to Gondioque, "Well! Shall we be off, your Excellency?"

First time. I have, of course, traveled throughout...gaining some experience.  Burgundy, and I have been north gaining some experience. My father was not pleased by my going sans leave to do so but pleased by what happened thereafter. [Gondioque was a recruiter and war leader who had some part in driving the Huns out of the land sought of Belgium. Titus would know this.]

They arrive at Kelyfea's shell shop; apprenticeships are arranged. Adrasteia, Ophelian, do your work well and obey your mistress, making ans selling. Create new items such as would please you. You will be present in my thoughts.  Tachys, you will look in on them every day. Once a week, oftener if need be, bring me report. In any case, I shall visit from time to time.

So, to the slave auction.
