Re: Training Camp

Solitaire, still depressingly sober, nods at them. "Yeah, it was something of a major disaster. Lets find a way not to do that again. Only I'm allowed in my head."

Impetus:
"Rescue and defense of civilian targets starting next week?  Why aren't we trying to rescue and defend people starting tomorrow?  I have no idea how many civilian casualties there could be by then, or how much environmental destruction.  I'm thinking that the sooner we get in there the better, boss."

"Even a week of training is better than none, just bumbling around in a situation like that is likely to just muck things up more. We'll have our chance soon, dont worry about that."

Solitaire then wanders off toward breakfast, wondering idly whats on the menu today.

Re: Training Camp

Quentin didn't have much to respond to Walker with. He hoped that the rest of the training this week would go somewhat better than their first day had. "It may be worthwhile to have a few of us run a patrol of the base before we start training to see if we can feel any extra novas about, in the future. That'd probably at least help from a peace-of-mind standpoint, even if this saboteur doesn't come back."

"I didn't notice much in all the fighting, I was busy with other stuff, like keeping people alive.  I know for a fact that thing tried to tamper with my head, but everyone knows that.  And I didn't really help on any investigating, that was mainly Harley and Zero, though they may not have found anything.  Dunno."

Re: Training Camp

At The Party:

Zero notices David's hesitation to answer. "What are you adding, David?" The Doctor presses in a patient, but firm voice. Zero politely refused to call Prodigal by anything but by his birth name.

The Scene of the Crime:

"Perhaps we should make copies of some evidence and divide up the rest, in case Utopia insists on claiming it. Do you have a blank tape I could use?" The Doctor gestures to it's recorder.

The Followup Interview:

"I saw a figure that looked like a silhouette of a human, but it was not. It was standing in the middle of the chaos without a care. This thing was a two dimensional creature, with an abstracted face. It's only features where reduced to shapes and lines, with a line for a mouth and two holes for eyes. It seemed like a distortion of space, as it always faced me, no matter how I faced it."

"Whatever it is, it see this only as amusement. It winked at me and taunted. It spoke only three words as it ran past me, retreating toward the base. "Isn't this fun?" Those are it's exact words, and tone. I can duplicate it for a recording for you. Have you encountered anything like this before? My team and countless others are now it's targets. I must insist on transparency on this issue, sir. Everything about it's actions show it sees this as a game. You said yourself there was only one casualty. That will not satisfy it's blood lust. It will return."

Re: Training Camp

*edit*
the night before was a blur. being dorm'ed, even his nova resistance couldn't keep up with the level of alcohol poisoning he was intent on inflicting upon his poor unsuspecting liver. he had separated himself from the other's celebration fairly early on. let them have their fun. they deserved it. no sense in being the buzz-kill and dragging anyone else through his gutter. not feeling particularly jubilant, Harley was content and happy to woefully drink himself into oblivion alone.

he didn't sleep or wake up. he passed out and came to, feeling like death warmed over to boot. he took care of that in short order by focusing inward on his node. nova metabolism was a beautiful thing. he drug himself into the meeting, no shower, no shave, cigarette pressed between his lips with a wave "sticky, broke and confused ... present and accounted for." catching the looks when "public image" was brought up and rolling his eyes, he butted his smoke "there! better?"

"TWO casualties!" Harley corrects, emphasized by holding up the evidence bag he collected containing the finger bones found at the scene. "and I ain't turnin' over shit without a direct inroad into this investigation. I owe that sonuvabitch, and I'll be damned if I'm gonna stand by and let it get botched. you wanna train me? then let me work the case!"

he continued "apparently, those are my powers so why not let me train 'em?" Harley is obviously pissed based on his level of insistence and doesn't look likely to back down from or off the subject. " ... 'sides, I'd like to meet some of these other novas you mentioned working the case. see what tricks they got up their sleeves. might even learn something."

Re: Training Camp

Nothing to say.  Dillon answered whatever questions asked, but he didn't have any answers.  He had new fire in his belly, though, and was eager to get back to the grind.  Once he was done, he followed the others to the Mess Hall.

Breakfast

"Any ideas how I could grab a two-dimensional object?" He'd been considering the problem of the Nova infiltrator.  Staring at his eggs wasn't helping him figure out a way.  "In any fight we're in, if I can just grab hold of the other person the rest of you can end them.  But, like, if they've got no thickness ... shit, I'm open to ideas."

_________________
Training

Once the skin was on and he'd gone heavy, Dillon was Comstock, and Comstock took to training like a machine.  Without the limit of sleep he could count on nearly twenty-one hours of productive time per day, nearly 80 hours of time left before the weekend and their deployment.  They wouldn't be perfect, but they would be hard.

First priority: Comstock wanted to know how they could requisition arms.  By Friday he knew how to pull his punches and abuse arm-locks to elicit compliance;  He'd practiced with a few willing soldiers until he had it down to a science.  But that wasn't good enough, and if he was going into the field he wanted a gun with non-lethal ammunition to deal with another situation like the emotional onslaught at the powers training exercise.

Second priority: Comstock wanted to know the rest of the team.  Time permitting, he wanted at least one sparring match with everyone.  Maybe he'd learn something, maybe he wouldn't, but the experience couldn't be anything but useful.  He was less likely to break Novas that baselines, too.  (Briefly, he wondered if that was a "racist thought or something.")

Third priority: team-building exercises.  Comstock didn't know shit about how to do that, so he'd ask Frostburn about it until she made something happen.  He knew that he wanted some clear combat order and job descriptions for everyone, so in the middle of it everyone could act without stopping to think or analyze.

Forth priority: Comstock wanted to memorize the Utopia manuals he'd been assigned.  He couldn't read as fast or memorize like the brains could, but when training was over he'd go right back to them until it was time for Solitaire's wake-up call and breakfast.

By Friday, the boy-scout routine and stupid-dedication will be a little old for everyone.  The chance to hit the Strip looks like a god-send.  Friday afternoon he'll actually take his eufiber off and pull the metal back under his real skin with an audible sucking noise.

Re: Training Camp

Imp returns from the showers looking and smelling a lot better.  Instead of his usual suit he's opted for worn looking blue jeans and a  white t-shirt.  No sense looking too formal.  he looks around the mess, notices some of the soldiers from the day before and sits down with them.  He offers condolences for the man who was killed yesterday and assures the men that his far more capable colleagues are on the trail of the person responsible.
After getting some face time with various groups of soldiers, and asking one of the tables with primarily women sitting at it if there is any way for him to make up for yesterday, he heads over to the trainees and sits down with a smile and, upon hearing about the investigation, "Harley, what have you found so far? Zero?"
After hearing about, or not, the initial findings of their investigation he pulls a note pad out of his back pocket and begins working out how to build a sensor that would detect quantum emissions.  He'd need to get Gravitas' help with it but he was confident that they could get something working that would make it much more difficult for a rogue nova to penetrate the base in the future.  Also much harder for them to zip off unnoticed to go buy multiple gallons of booze, but that was a trade off Imp was willing to make.

Re: Training Camp

During training that week Imp pushes himself farther and harder than he has before.  For those who are used to him being laid back and goofy, the driven perfectionist they are working with comes as something of a surprise.  He pushes himself hard, too hard.  He has also stopped eating and sleeping.  For the first few days he looks about ready to keel over.  Occasional nosebleeds, an unhealthy pallor, and a decrease in his incessant flirtation are signs that he is pushing himself beyond where he should stop. Oddly enough he seems to be enjoying it.  By mid week though, it seems like his body has adapted to the demands being placed on it and his normal color and vigor return.  He seems to be working on powers of movement the most, once he even manages to break the sound barrier, before slowing back down.
In the sparring session Imp shows off martial arts skills that have only been enhanced by his knowledge of the laws of physics, specifically inertia and momentum.  If anybody wants to learn the fine art of non lethal hand-to-hand combat Imp is more than willing to teach some classes.  His almost supernatural Aikido skills (5 dots) combined with his quantum powers make him incredibly frustrating to fight, punches never seem to land, people get thrown unexpectedly, foes rushing at him are suddenly catapulted into nearby walls...  He doesn't do much damage but he is able to slow down or tie up people for a surprising amount of time.  Occasionally a punch or kick slips through and Imp goes down like a sack of potatoes, but after he's brought around again he wipes off the blood and continues the bout.  By the end of the week Imp has gone a fair distance towards synthesizing his physical capabilities with his quantum ones.  He also talks seriously with Sol about ways to use their supernatural attractiveness in combat.  A brief jolt of sex appeal might distract an opponent enough to make an opening.  He was unwilling to try it with his teammates, Imp didn't want them to think about how similar his abilities were to the nova who clouded their minds with rage.
In his down time Imp devours books regarding relating with, and manipulating, people.

Re: Training Camp

Gravitas spends most of the rest of the week's training working on teamwork, tactics, and methods. Unconventional applications of power and thinking outside the box are his watch-phrases. He knows what he can do, but the week is spent largely figure out the best way to use the things he can do.

When prompted for assistance from any of the others (notably Imp) Quentin throws the entire weight of his supernatural intellect at a given problem. He is not, he admits up front, someone who has been anything like an inventor in the past, and so a lot of problems with materials and practical methods escape him until he has a chance to research these topics, but he can help to confirm or provide theory, prove math, and the like.

He also spends some time working on the preliminary stages of the nova gym/danger room. Talking to the officials about clearing out a plot for the structure and seeing if he can requisition the materials they'll need to start construction. He also tries to devise equipment that might actually be useful in such a facility and runs his ideas past other members of the team as he gathers their input for anything he might not have thought of.

Re: Training Camp

Solitaire spends most of her week picking up any type of combat training she can. She was a natural brawler, having never had any 'formal' training, but performing more than satisfactorily for her instructors. Punching was easy, what she was looking to learn were grapples, takedowns, and general disabling moves. Solitaire could kill somebody with a good hit, she was sure, and rather wanted to avoid that if she could.

She takes up Comstocks offer of sparring almost instantly, happy to be able to cut loose. The next few days were full of bruises and aches for both of them, but it felt good just the same.

Solitaire also spends her time practicing her flying, wanting to know exactly how fast and high she could go, how tight turns she could make, how long it took to stop, ect... She knew she had limits, everybody did, and wanted to know just how far she could go, then edge it just a bit farther.

She, like Imp, is probably overworking herself, but they all were, with only a week to go, and Solitaire was unwilling to give anything less than her all.

Re: Training Camp

The rest of the week has little to no silence for Sam. Zeus took the role of "backseat driver" for his training. He was plauged by headaches that Zeus punished him with whenever he did something wrong. He didn't even sleep well, as his new friend kept him awake with ideas and schedules and training for the next day.

However tiresome it may have been, Zeus's training helped quite a bit; most of which consisted of flight runs, target pratice, and meditation.

Sam considered sparring with Comstock, but decided against it, as he is not as much of a heavy hitter as Solitare, and probably couldn't take a punch from either of them very well.

"Nothing good. We have a slick little monster on our hands. It killed a civilian and framed him for it's attack. The only weakness I can see in it's character is that it is over the top. Subtlety is not it's strong point. It has provided a perfectly probable patsy to take the fall, but it's too perfect, too theatrical. And it forgot to include a reasonable excellent on the patsy's body. We may have found some evidence it didn't intend to leave, but we won't know until we follow the logic trails."

Re: Training Camp

The rest of the week, while not without a few hiccups, goes far better than your first day.  Training is hard, and Frostburn is more than happy to stay up with you and grill you on your powers use, and maneuvers.  She doesn't seem to be quite as hardy as all of you, and so she does spend a few hours a day eating and sleeping, but is otherwise going 24/7.  Her breaks, and scenario set up times, provide those that are on all the time with a few hours to work on other projects, such as science or formulating ideas for construction projects (and maybe even getting started on a few minor ones).  Those that still eat and sleep will be hard pressed to keep up with the grueling pace, but will still manage for the most part.

Shadow Walker reappears during this time to help with powers instruction and combat.  He speaks little, instead showing others how to use their powers by example.  He instructs on the types of attacks people can expect from other novas, how to counter them, and the strangeness of such combat.  Several times during these exercises, he manages to work the team into some sort of weird scenario, such as underground fighting in the remains of the flooded building from earlier while dematerialized (density control seems to be one of his powers; of note, when people are with him at reduced density, it feels as they are not completely in phase with reality, inhabiting an eerie world cast in shades of gray) and in a grapple.

Mr. Walker is only around intermittently, as he is coordinating your deployment, base construction, press releases on the incident earlier in the week, and a number of other issues.  Dr. Bharati is on hand as an adviser to Frostburn during missions, so that she can make suggestions from a more science based approach, and occasionally donates an insightful bit of knowledge over the com.

The troops are rotated out in shifts to keep up with you, though maneuvers involving them have been dramatically scaled back.  They seem to have forgiven you for any harm you did, likely due to Impetus' winning smile (and other things...), and the Soothing presences of several group members.  The base doctor is on hand at all such exercises.

Combat training, outside the sessions with Shadow Walker, is a much more tame affair.  While he does come for some of these sessions and teach (he is an exceptionally accomplished martial artist apparently) Lt. Kovich and one of her assistants provide the primary early instruction, which is mostly the basics of military combat training (basic h2h, basic rifle and m9, etc).  When people move past that, they bring in a special forces operative of some sort (he doesn't share his name, or his background, or really even talk) who yells at everyone and instructs them in the more advanced aspects of whatever skill they need the info for.  While he teaches advanced material, Kovich and her assistant continue to work on the basics with those that need further help.

By the end of the week, everyone is exhausted.  People have been pushing themselves hard, draining their energy reserves, and straining their powers to the limit.  By the end of it, those that pushed the hardest may even have developed a feeling of lasting fatigue, or perhaps dissonance, that they can't seem to shake.  By the time Friday crawls to a close, the team is closer and working efficiently together, though also likely snaping at one another due to stress.  Your instructors thank you for your hard work, say that you've done well, and shove you out of the base to de-stress.

Transport to Vegas is provided, if people still need it.  If not, they let you travel as you please.  Or just stay on base if you like, though they suggest you get some time away.  Rooms are provided, much as last time, and you are not expected to perform (though you will be soon).  As you were booted out for play time, you were reminded to be good, and remember that you are representing all novas, and Utopia in particular, to a frightened and awestruck public.  Act accordingly.

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)

For those that would have experimented with rapid recharge of their Q pools, or maxing their powers, I think a few taint points (1 for each) are probably in order.  Prolonged, repetitive use of such abilities are really the ready source of taint in the game.  This period might also justify the purchase of any Tainted powers or Q.  And it certainly also justifies an increase in powers or Q purchased normally as well.

I would also highly appreciate it if people spent some xp on skills at this point.  We are getting enough that you can afford it, and by now nearly everyone will have learned something new.

Oh, people can continue to post their activities if they haven't already, and post more on the investigation.  But general activity will be moving over to 'On the Strip' for now.

Re: Training Camp

Phantasm spends her week training just as hard as the rest of the team.  She doesn't sleep, eating is merely entertainment, and her hyper-enhanced learning abilities make her a quick study.

Her primary concern over the course of the week is to find a way of working in sync with the team, and finding herself a role to play.  She learns to utilize her creations in new ways, trying to emulate the roles of the others on the team, but continues to keep her Shapeshifting and other abilities from her teammates.

She happily spars with Comstock, displaying a great proficiency for dodging his potent blows (Athletics), though her strikes deal him very little damage and show no real skill in martial arts (Manipulation + Subterfuge).

She also spends a good deal of time worrying about the mental stability of her teammates.  What if they go crazy?  Nova's seem particularly prone to such things, a worrying trend.  She needed to be prepared to take people out, even her friends... Even herself?  She begins focusing on how to work around other novas' abilities, and on psychology.

"I think that could be arranged, unless Grav has figured out his portal thing work. Think you could handle Mach 1? Or should we take it slow?" Solitaire hadn't been paying all that much attention to his efforts, it was a neat trick and all, but the math made her head hurt.

Someone very perceptive might be able to tell she looked a bit burned out, but relieved to finally get some off time. Her hair was still tied back up and out of the way, and her jacket was a tad dusty, but overall, she looked good as ever.

"I have a very mundane talent to hurt monsters. It's not showy. Most of them just don't like me when I need to operate on them."

The Investigation:

With Dan Walker’s sanction to continue with the investigation, Zero begins to quietly abuse the access. It stays off the radar for most of the investigators, and makes copies, (equal to the number in Zero’s team, plus two), of all files and evidence, before passing it on to the main team. If the investigators complain, Zero uses it’s training as an excuse for lateness in sharing data, apologizes, and hands in it’s findings as late as it can. It tries to pop into the labs to use the equipment when the other investigators are lease likely to be around, and draws up a bullshit schedule for lab use to annoy and delay collaboration. Zero snoops in on the other investigator's findings, and fibs to technicians to gain data. The Doctor trusts only it’s team until the rouge Nova is found, but it is not loud about it. Excuses are made, and apologies fly to pacify tempers. Everyone on the team is quietly given copies of evidence before the investigators to hold for personal use and safe keeping.

The News Crew: Early in, Zero will first try to use it’s access to obtains the names, addresses, and all the files involving their arrest following the sabotaged training exercise. It then digs further back and looks at they’re past records, if any, for cruel leverage, and to see if anything is odd. What if one of them is the creature, or affiliated with it?

The DNA: Tests are run on all evidence. The bones, the hair, and swabs of the palm print and journal and anything else that might have potential.

The Palm Print: Zero runs the print through the national fingerprint database.

The Accelerate: The accelerate used on the buildings is tested.

The Victim: Zero researches the patsy driver’s records to see if there are any anomalies or reasons he was picked. Zero looks for handwriting to compare to the journal.

The Journal: Is dusted for fingerprints. If the driver has prints on record, they are compared. Zero also runs them in the database also, just in case.

The Doctor sees if the driver had blond hair, and if it’s DNA matches that of the fingers. Zero also begins to put a mental list of base staff with blond hair together in it’s mind. ‘2-D Man’ might have just used it’s powers to stalk them for weeks, but it could also be someone close. It also looks into any personal that has left before or after the training.

Zero will ask Harley to join it in private interrogations of the news crew and find out why they really flew to the training grounds. Was it a tip they received? It couldn’t have been anonymous. The amount of clearance and resources to take a News Chopper, illegally, to an army-training center would indicate that they thought they had a solid tip. If it is mental manipulation, Zero needed to know what other powers ‘2-D Man’ has used on people.

The Doctor asks how Logan’s research into the credit card is going.

Zero also looks into how the soldier on the field died, exactly.

At all times Zero pays attention to it’s sense of who and what is watching The Doctor. It makes mental notes of how many observing devices are in areas, and sees if an additional pair of eyes are watching it at any time.

The investigators are not happy, and the few times you work with Mr.Walker he informs you that it is causing difficulties for him, as they are wanting to drop you from investigations (though he doesn't seem too upset about your actions), but otherwise they seem to buy it.  Hope everyone has a storage place for all this paperwork...

Investigations show that a Tom Anchor and Marian Vestucci were let out of jail with fines for their activities.  Chanel 5 apologized for their involvement, but also paid the fines and bail.  Tom had a prior arrest over a DUI, while Marian was divorced only 3 months ago, citing irresolvable differences, with the kid and the house going to the husband.  Neither shows any obvious influence from novas.

The DNA: Tests are run on all evidence. The bones, the hair, and swabs of the palm print and journal and anything else that might have potential.
The palm print belongs to Sgt. Avandovskia, a young woman that works on the base under Lt. Kovich.  She has long blonde hair.  She has shown no connection up to this point, and no odd behavior.  The bones belong to the trucker that wrote the journal.

The Accelerate: The accelerate used on the buildings is tested.
Whatever burned the victim is something else entirely, but the building accelerant appeared to be gasoline, with flamable objects positioned at key points.

The Victim: Zero researches the patsy driver’s records to see if there are any anomalies or reasons he was picked. Zero looks for handwriting to compare to the journal.
To your eyes, it appears completely random.  The signature on the receipt Harley found matches the journal's handwriting.

The Journal: Is dusted for fingerprints. If the driver has prints on record, they are compared. Zero also runs them in the database also, just in case.
This one is interesting. Most of the fingerprints are not in the database (the driver was not in it either).  One fingerprint is a partial, scraped from the side of the book, on the pages.  This one gets a bunch of partial matches in the database, but nothing special stands out about any of them.

The Doctor sees if the driver had blond hair, and if it’s DNA matches that of the fingers...  It also looks into any personal that has left before or after the training.
DNA is not a match for the hair.  2 people left the project citing trauma as the reason.

Solid tip to their boss, who "had a really good feeling about the tip, even though it doesn't have the same credibility as most of our stuff"

The Doctor asks how Logan’s research into the credit card is going.
?

Zero also looks into how the soldier on the field died, exactly.
hard to say exactly, either shrapnel from friendly fire, or from bouncing off of Comstock's metal chest.

At all times Zero pays attention to it’s sense of who and what is watching The Doctor. It makes mental notes of how many observing devices are in areas, and sees if an additional pair of eyes are watching it at any time.
By this point anyone with your particular enhancement knows where the cameras are, but extra eyes are difficult, since many are focusing on you, but your attention is noted.

Zero will ask Mr. Logan to acompany him in interviewing Sgt. Avandovskia. OOC: Should the Doctor ask permission first, or is authority already given?

Do they have a common element? Nationality? Crime? Age? Location? etc, etc.

Zero tries to get names and contact info. Where they soldiers on the field? The Doctor will ask the evaluating psychologist what he/she felt about their reported trauma. There is no point running all over interrogating people if it is obvious they are not involved.

OOC: I should have been clearer. That was directed at Harley Logan, and his research into the Credit Card recite found in the drain.

OOC: Very true. I was thinking it's more of a focus when Zero is in areas with low of no personnel around, to see if some invisible presence is watching besides the cameras.

Unless '2-D Man' is behind the cameras! They're all in on it. Mr. Walker is '2-D Man.' It's a plot! The Doctor will have to take over Utopia to ensure it's uncorrupted. Behold it's genius. Behold to Mind Beam Canon™! But, and even more disturbing thought. What if '2-D Man' is Dr. Zero?!

Re: Training Camp

"I've been practicing this week, this should be quick and easy," Quentin gestures with one hand and with very little apparent effort opens up a swirling vortex. Through it appears to be the sidewalk outside the Bellagio where the team had stayed during their last trip. The fountain show begins almost just as the portal opens. The portal itself is around three meters wide, and thus pretty much everyone can get through it at once. Quentin doesn't hesitate, "Ok, lets go!"

[[OOC: Ok, dice roller fucking hates me, you won't even believe this even if you go to the dice roller window and see it yourself:
15:01, Today: Gravitas failed (no successes) using 5d10 with the Target Number system with a target of 7 with rolls of 1,1,1,1,1. Warp duration (Vegas Trip).
15:01, Today: Gravitas rolled 5 successes using 8d10 with the Target Number system with a target of 7 with rolls of 5,9,1,8,3,7,9,10. Per+Warp, 1 Mega - Targeting Vegas.
Since the Warp duration roll does not meaningfully have a botch, as the warp must stay open for at least one round, this just means that Willpower points have to be spent to keep it open longer than that. Still, all 1's? Do I win a fucking prize for that?]]

Re: Training Camp

"I don't know exactly where I want to go, just in the general area that all of you are going.  What were you planning?  We haven't done much since this whole thing started..."

Looking between Impetus' smiling face, imagining him holding her close for a prolonged period, and feeling herself mildly excited by the prospect, quickly says "Thanks Imp, but Solitaire already offered.  Maybe next time.  Though honestly, if Quentin can manage it, we can all just save time and energy using his wormhole thing."
