Adding a Game System / Special Dice to the roller?
FFG is coming out with a new edition of Legend of the Five Rings. And of course there's special dice.

Will it be possible to have the dice / mechanics added to the roller?

There are two special dice. Ring and Skill.
There are four fancy new symbols. Success, Strife, Explosive Success, and Opportunity.

Ring Dice are d6s with these faces:
1: blank
2: success
3: success & strife
4: explosive success & strife
5: opportunity
6: opportunity & strife

Skill Dice are d12s with these faces:
1-2: blank
3-4: success
5: success & opportunity
6-7: success & strife
8: explosive success
9: explosive success & strife
10-12: opportunity

Players will need to roll several of each dice and have the symbols counted. Similar to the FFG Star Wars game, but not the same dice at all. Nor are these Genesys dice.

ETA: If it matters, there is an element of Roll & Keep in the new system, so tracking which dice yielded which results should be the default.

Adding a Game System / Special Dice to the roller?
In reply to liblarva (msg # 1):

Die rolls are displayed in the order called by the dice roller, so tracking which die rolled what is a matter of being mindful of the order in which they were called.

For instance:

[dice=1d6,1d12 record=yes memo="Ring Die, then Skill Die" text="Ring Die, then Skill Die"]

might result in:

02:14, Today: {Character Name} rolled 3,1 using 1d6,1d12 with rolls of 3,1.  Ring Die, then Skill Die.

and would be different from:

[dice=1d12,1d6 record=yes memo="Skill Die, then Ring Die" text="Skill Die, then Ring Die"]

which might result in:

02:14, Today: {Character Name} rolled 12,5 using 1d12,1d6 with rolls of 12,5.  Skill Die, then Ring Die.

Until this roll type might be added to the dice roller, using either of the two strings above in a post calling for these rolls and consulting the tables you have already set forth would do the job.

jase would be the fellow to make the final decision as to whether to add this new type or not.  He would be coding it.

The Genesys dice are also used in the rather prolific and successful FFG SWRPG, and also Genesys, which is the generic imprint.  It might be worth it to plug in on that basis.

Any chance a mod could respond to this? The new L5R game does not use Genesys dice. The dice do not match anything currently in the roller. Which is why I provided the results. If the answer's no, that's fine. Just something official would be nice...if y'all have time.

You'll need to wait for a response from jase, and with how busy he's been lately... it could be a long wait.

Adding a Game System / Special Dice to the roller?
We need a new dice roller setup for Firefly RPG (based on Cortex-Plus gaming system). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...ly_Role-Playing_Game

The game has multiple dice from d4 to d12, but they are all added together and use only the highest 2 dice results (1's are marked as opportunities/jinxes, which can be used for complications, and DO NOT count in the highest 2 results). If all 1's are rolled in the dice pool, its called a 'botch' (very bad things happen as a result of that)

I know there is a dice rule to allow highest two results, but I've tried every method of (d6+d8+2d10)h2  or using brackets, etc.  It has to take the top two of different die types, which doesn't seem to work with our current dice roll options. Even just that by itself would be helpful, in the short term.

I created a dice roller in excel, that works well but can't use it online. It is using formulas in cells, so I would have to send the xls file to view how it works.

Just set it to record the individual die results and do the adding yourself for now?

Yes, thanks. We are doing that, but I was hoping it to do at least the (d6+2d8+d10)h2, and give me the highest two numbers. That seems like it would be really easy to do, not sure how much hard it would be to ignore 1's and mark them, but if it just added up the two highest it would be enough to give us a quick total to look back on.

Is this not the right place to request an addition to the Dice Roller for Firefly RPG?

Yes it is.  However, as mentioned further up the thread, you'll need to wait for the site Admin to find the time to look at your request and decide if it can be added.

I have some familiarity with this system, and have the rulebook.  I'll try to explore the limits of what is possible using the dice roller as it stands now.

I don't know that I'd expect the dice roller to sort out all the peculiarities of a Cortex Plus dice pool automagically.  Some things can be done.  Let's use an example roll to extract data from a derelict ship's computers.  An Action is required because getting the computer going is pivotal to restoring power in some crucial way...

Say the GM grabs a d10 for the difficulty die, adds a d8 because the computer is Outdated, and a d6 because the data needed is Encrypted.  Rolling the dice in the dice roller would require a link such as:

[dice=1d10,1d8,1d6 text="Dice Pool: Extract Data" memo="Dice Pool: Extract Data"]

Such a link would appear in a post as:

Dice Pool: Extract Data  (<-- the result of the text= field.)

{I cannot show an actual link here.  Try the code line above in a post in one of your games (or in the Scratchpad viewed as a message) to check how it looks and works.}

The result of this link in the Dice Roller would look something like:

22:56, Today: {Character Name} rolled 7,5,3 using 1d10,1d8,1d6.  Dice Pool: Extract Data

You're quite right.  The syntax for what you're trying to do is dok= kh drop=2, but this doesn't work because the roll you are making uses multiple dice types (d4, d6, d8, etc.) instead of rolling all dice as the same shape/number of sides.  This is, indeed a limitation of the dice roller.

Note that the results as displayed in the log are respective of the order in which the dice are stated, that is, the d10 rolled a 7, the d8 rolled a 5, and the d6 rolled a 3.  Your difficulty for this roll would be a 12 (7 and 5 being the two highest results).

I'm afraid that's the best the dice roller can do for you as it currently stands.

I've built such critters in LibreOffice Calc, and in RFO Basic (for my android devices), but, alas, they don't integrate to RPoL.  Yeah.  As the old Rolling Stones tune would have it, "you can't always get what you want...".  Sorry.

Re: Adding a Game System / Special Dice to the roller?
Jase added the ability for different dice to be added together, so if the interaction with other parts (like dropping dice) isn't working, maybe it has something to do with how he made the dice addition part work.

Re: Adding a Game System / Special Dice to the roller?
I was thinking of having the RPoL dice system do something like a set (d10,d8,d6,d8) roll the numbers randomly to give you a set of results. example: (7,2,5,3) then apply the same 'keep 2 highest numbers in the set' function to it.  So that would end up with 7,5 and adding the numbers in the set remaining together, will give the result of 12. That would be the basic function.

Now, to be true to the RPG dice system, you would drop the 1's from the set as well. They are not included in the highest two results. So if the results of (d10,d8,d6,d8), were (7,1,1,1) the result would only have a set of (7) after dropping the 1's, so the result would be 7, and 3 jinxes/opportunities (which are the result of the 1's rolled)

Not really needed for calculations, but for reference. If a player rolls a 1 it is a jinx (the GM can buy complications with Plot Points). If the opposition rolls them they are opportunities and the players can spent Plot Points to assign the opposition Complications (additional dice for the opposing group).

I could do something similar in Visual Basic and post the code, would that be helpful to convert it into the custom Perl language? Granted, I'm an amateur in programming, but I have done some character generators in VBA, so I have used similar concepts. I am willing to help as much as possible.

Depending what you mean by `use it online`, the spreadsheet could probably be loaded to a google spreadsheet.  Normal cell formulas come across well.  Scripts are more work.

When I tried it, (using the "manual" field of the dice roller I selected d4+d6+d8+d10) the following error message was thrown:

You cannot combine multiple die sizes when dropping or keeping dice.

Re: Adding a Game System / Special Dice to the roller?
Looking back Jase mentioned that as a sticking point,

To quote another thread, post by jase, (old history, so figured quoting was appropriate),
So yes, I can allow additions (and subtractions).  The considerations for dropping the lowest etc will be a bit different (it'll be for the whole roll, not each section) but that's not a huge issue.  It's a matter of if there's a large call for it.  It will take several hours to implement, test, double-check etc... so if it's just to save you a few seconds of mental arithmetic then I think my (unfortunately finite) time would be best invested elsewhere.

So, basically, my conclusions on what the dice roller can and cannot do WRT drop/keep in a multi-type dice roll are essentially sound.  If not, please educate me so I can upgrade my understanding.
