Dice Roller Stored in Descending Order

Right now the way the dice roller works is that the most recent roll is at the top, the second most recent is second from the top etc.

When I'm posting a long series of dice rolls for other players to reference, they will see the last thing first which often doesn't make sense if you're reading from a standard top-down approach. You see me rolling for damage before even knowing that I successfully hit the target etc.

I would love the ability as a GM to configure the dice roller to store the results in either ascending or descending order. As part of the configuration options make the last roll at the bottom and it can "scroll up off the top".

Instead of viewing the "top 50" results you would instead show the "bottom 50" so to speak...

Re: Dice Roller Stored in Descending Order

As someone who does most of her posting from mobile devices, the "most recent at the bottom" option would be a nightmare, especially with 50+ rolls on the screen.

If it's something that the individual can choose to view, I give it a +0.  I would never use it either as a GM or as player.

If it's something the GM would force on the players, I give it a -1.

It doesn't really take all that much effort to figure it out the way it is.  If there is a damage roll, then it's obvious the roll just after it was the to-hit roll and it succeeded.

In reply to praguepride (msg # 1):

Depends upon rolls are handled by the players/GM really.

Many people do 'combo' rolls. (To take D&D as an example)

"1d20+2,1d20+3,1d8+2 Notes: Init, Attack, Damage."

This still comes-out all as one roll and can be read in clean order.

But, maybe an ability to chunk data? I dunno.

Personally, I always look at the time stamps first - and then start reading from the bottom anyway.

Re: Dice Roller Stored in Descending Order

The order of rolls in the dice roller log makes perfect sense to me - last roll on the top ... however, when I want to post specific rolls to a game thread eg for combat, I have to manually reverse them.

EG dice roller log shows:

21:11, Mon 15 Dec 2014: Fred the Fighter rolled 5 using 1d6+3. Damage.
21:06, Mon 15 Dec 2014: Fred the Fighter rolled 22 using 1d20+5. Attack
21:05, Mon 15 Dec 2014: Fred the Fighter rolled 9 using 1d20+2. Initiative.

... along with all the other rolls in there from myself, other players and the GMs.  Absolutely fine, wouldn't have it any other way.

BUT when I post in game I want that to read earliest to latest, so it follows the order of what just happened:

21:05, Mon 15 Dec 2014: Fred the Fighter rolled 9 using 1d20+2. Initiative.
21:06, Mon 15 Dec 2014: Fred the Fighter rolled 22 using 1d20+5. Attack
21:11, Mon 15 Dec 2014: Fred the Fighter rolled 5 using 1d6+3. Damage.

Now, as GamerHandle suggests, you could do that by setting it up as a combo roll, but personally I find typing in manual dice harder than using the dice roller a couple of times (and you don't want to waste that invariably good damage roll on a missed attack !  :P), so I've always done the manually editing.  And pulled a face every time I had to.

Perhaps as Evil Empryss says we can figure it out the way it is, but for those of us bordering on OCD, they HAVE to be in the right order in the game thread ! <grins>

But I still come back to the latest to earliest order in the log making perfect sense and I wouldn't want to mess with that ...

BUT what I could go for, big time, would be a button or dropdown to simply sort the list earliest to latest, latest to earliest (reload in reverse loop) - that wouldn't be a GM option, just an on demand function so player A can sort the list displayed on their screen while player B sees it as the Lords of Law intended.  Just a simple toggle:

Show: | Earliest to Latest |V|
        Latest to Earliest

That way I could make all my rolls, and see them added to the log, then when I'm ready to copy I just hit the toggle, copy the ones I want and then I can paste 'em in to the game thread.

Even better, that functionality should sit under the Rolls option (underneath character name) that pops up a screen with just that character's dice rolls - so the toggle wouldn't complicate the dice roller, (should therefore be easier to code, and would exclude all the other character/GM rolls (I only want mine if I'm going to copy them).

Re: Dice Roller Stored in Descending Order

I think if out were to be implemented in the fashion Skald suggested or doing something similar, it would be a useful addition.  Otherwise it would get annoying to have to scroll to the bottom constantly for your rolls.

Re: Dice Roller Stored in Descending Order

I don't know.  Pasting in rolls in the right order then would mean doing whatever you do to reverse the order, letting that load, then scrolling all the way to the bottom to find your new rolls to copy... or clear the Log before you roll, which isn't always an option.  I'm not sure it's really that much easier than just reversing their order manually like you do now.  It might be cool if you could somehow select a set of rolls and reverse their order, but then again, that seems to be about what you're doing now.

And, as much as I dearly love all the functions in the DR -- it does bother me that when I first started on RPoL, when I went into the DR I'd see like the top five rolls right away.  Now, even on a full screen, I have to scroll down to get even the top line if I'm the GM.

So normally, if I see a feature I just wouldn't use, I stay quiet because, well, clearly somebody would use it or we wouldn't be having these discussions.  But in this case, it's a real-estate issue, and the option feels too limited-use to me and too clunky anyway to be worth that.

Re: Dice Roller Stored in Descending Order

Given that there could be quite a build up of rolls (for those who keep logs), wouldn't it be better to just have a complete search and sort functionality? You could search and sort by date, character, the notes, etc.

Re: Dice Roller Stored in Descending Order

Except that the dice roller automatically truncates the log, so it doesn't really get large enough to warrant a complex sort/search function, and you can already extract all the rolls by a particular character.

The "sort by notes" option would also need some way to account for variant spellings (mis- or otherwise), abbreviations, and just plain silliness (like "killit!killit!killit!" instead of "attack roll").

Re: Dice Roller Stored in Descending Order

I just meant to sort notes raw. I for example use a short code as a note of which encounter and which round, then followed by description. Basically it would allow custom searches for a group that does similar, allowing the rolls to be sorted by encounter and round, or some other scheme.

Is it sad that I haven't been in a game long enough to have a dice log truncate?

Re: Dice Roller Stored in Descending Order

The potential real estate issues in the Dice Roller is one reason why I suggested it'd sit better in the Rolls pop up screen, and there's literally nothing else on there but the log list, so a "Reverse Order" button or "Earliest to Latest/Latest to Earliest" drop down won't be much of an impact at all.

Also helps with the multiple rolls, as GMs and NPCs all get their own rolls only.

As to whether it's easier than cutting and pasting - probably on a desktop as it's much easier to juggle main screen and popup than on a mobile.

But as I say, the one (and only) button on the Rolls pop up shouldn't impact real estate for anyone else, and users can choose to use it or not if it's easier for them. :>

This! 'Most all the players I know use some silly phrase rather than the actual dice roll name.  Including me!
