Re: Chapter 2a: Tobias and Sean

Well my mom's sleeping because she doesn't feel well, and my dad's out running. I'm not really supposed to open the door for strangers... though you don't look low, he mutters to himself. Are you like police officers or something?

Re: Chapter 2a: Tobias and Sean

Sean looked from the kid to Tobias and back. "If you think your dad will be back soon we will wait for him.  If that's alright with you, Hank?"

Motioning with his head he continues, "We'll be over there in the car."

Toby nodded to Hank and, with a reassuring smile, he accompanied Sean to the car. "I hate children." Realizing how that sounded, he amended, "in work, that is. Never turns out pretty. The precogs could have at least told us it was a kid."

Re: Chapter 2a: Tobias and Sean

Luckily you don't have to wait long. As soon as you start heading down the driveway, a man in running clothes jogs up the street and turns into the driveway.

Can I help you? he asks. The man, like Henry/Hank, is also a Shadow human.

Quirking an eye at Tobias, Sean began, "My name is Sean O'Leary and this is Tobias Byrne.  We are working with the FBI.  We would like to ask you some questions.  Could we talk inside please?"

Um, uh, sure, yah, yah. Led us go inside.

His accent is thick. To most people it would sound like German, but to people actually fluent in German it sounds like someone with a French accent trying to sound German.

As he leads you inside he says, I tought my wife would be home, but perhaps she has been seek lately and she is not feeling well. Is everythink alright? Ees somebody in trouble?

Sean scanned the surrounding street as the three of them moved toward the house.  After closing the door to the building Sean turned to the man saying, "Mr. Leyden have you noticed anything out of the ordinary in the last few days?  Say, vehicles that don't belong in the neighborhood, or people on foot you don't recognize?"

"Perhaps." Tobias said, "We have reason to believe that your son may be the target of an attack in the near future. We also suspect that it may be linked with your place of origin." He lightly stressed the last part of his speech, hoping he got the point across without sounding like he was the one doing the threatening.

Re: Chapter 2a: Tobias and Sean

Attack? Why wold someone want to attack my Henry?

He puts his arm around Henry and pulls him closer in a (probably subconscious) protective gesture.

And whado you mean, zis "place of orijhen"? Ees someone attacking foreigners? Henry ees born in America, he is no foreigner. Ees mozer and I, we come from Jheorjhia 15 years ago. We are not Muslims, we do not look like Muslims.

He's right at that. Peter's face, echoed by that of Henry, shows strong features, with a square jaw and piercing eyes. Most people would call him either Germanic or Eastern European, consistent with his story of Georgian heritage.

[Private to Tobias Byrne: Sense Motive (18): You notice a slight pause before he says "Georgia", as if he has to think about where he was born.

Putting on what he hoped was a reassuring smile Sean said, "Peter, you can relax the accent if you wish and speak comfortably.  All we want is information so that we can prevent any threats against your family."  Pausing for a moment he adds, "We're not interested in which country you came from - we need to know where you came from."

Re: Chapter 2a: Tobias and Sean

Whad are you trying to say? Zis ees my real accent, isn't it Henry?

Henry, wide-eyed in surprise, hastily nods in agreement.

Peter stays silent for a while, considering. He finally nods in defeat and says, I did not thing ze FBI knew of such zings. We were told zat nobody would know of our homeland here. And nobody from our homeland knows we are here, because even we don't know how we got here. Is it those... Fraternal Order people? We here rumors that they don't like our kind, but I did not know they could tell we humans are different.

Re: Chapter 2a: Tobias and Sean

"They don't." Tobias said, "he's FBI, a consult. I'm with the Company. Don't know if you've heard of them."

He grimaced when he heard Peter mention the Order. If they were involved, this could get pretty hairy pretty quickly. Dredging up what he knew offhand, the Order was a cloak-and-dagger traditional secret society, concerned with keeping extranormal creatures out. They were big. He wasn't sure if the Company would be willing to fight someone like this.

Henry tugs on his dad's shirt and whispers into his ear.

No, no, zey don't care about zat. he replies. Your mother is seek, she does not know what she ees talking about.

He looks back at the agents and stands up. Gentleman, if you have no more questions, my wife she ees seek, and I need to shower now.

Re: Chapter 2a: Tobias and Sean

She has fever, she ees just raving.

Henry finally pipes up, ignoring his father's protests. Dad doesn't believe me, but I think she knows stuff. Like ESP or something. She told me not to open the door for any "low" people. I wasn't really sure what she meant by that, though. She said, what did she say? Oh yeah, she said that someone was looking for me, but they didn't know it yet. I don't —

Suddenly from the second level a woman lets out a blood-curdling scream. Horrified, Henry and Peter run up the stairs, the latter muttering something about showing yourselves out the door.

Had Peter been in the room to hear his reply, he would have gotten something very similar to 'like hell.'

He was up and right behind the other two coming up the stairs.

Re: Chapter 2a: Tobias and Sean

The sound is coming from up the stairs and down the hallway, in the master bedroom. Peter tears through the door with Henry quick in toe. Beyond the doorway Sonya, dressed in a night gown, is furiously scratching at the wall above her bed's headboard, digging with the fervor of someone who's been buried alive. The wall is covered in bloody scratch marks and her fingernails are torn to stumps. In between screams she rambles incoherently.

Peter and Henry try to restrain her and she protests, yelling Zey are just right over zher! I can hear him on ze ozer side! Zey need my help, please let me help them! Zey are so close, I am so close! I am... so...

She fades, closes her eyes, and falls backwards. Peter tries to catch her, but she falls backwards onto the bed. She groans and stirs, and in a very sleepy voice she says, Honey? Ees zat you?

She sees Sean and Tobias standing in the doorway and suddenly notices she is not properly dressed. Pulling the covers over herself annoyedly, she asks Peter, Eh, who are zees people and why are zey in my bedroom?

"I understand." Tobias said. He forwent the nicety of offering a ride, as he was sure it would be refused. Sighing slightly, he pulled a card from his pocket. "If there's anything I can do, please don't hesitate to call."

"We'll show ourselves out."

Henry takes the card when it comes clear that his father is not paying attention. As you leave the room, Sonya is packing some things into an overnight bag, and Peter is dialing on the phone. The last thing you hear before you shut the front door is Peter asking the operator for the number for St Elizabeths.

Re: Chapter 2a: Tobias and Sean

Tobias watched the closed door for a moment, then turns back to the car with a small sigh. He hated it when people were uncooperative, especially when all he was trying to do was help.

Still, there was one more thing he could do before he left. Tracing a small sign in the air, he muttered something unintelligible, and scanned his eyes over the house. Once completed, he got back into the car and headed for Frank.

Odd, he felt as if the seat next to him should have been occupied...
