OOC: Character Creation

Use this thread to coordinate character creation. Your team of 4 (or 5... we'll see) was specially selected because your skills go together perfectly. As such, it makes most sense to me if you figure out your characters together.

So far we have:

Slot 1: Xavier Angel Solomon (master of handguns)
Slot 2: Miri Ankh (investigator)
Slot 3/4: Tobias Byrne (tech/specialist)
Slot 4/3: Finley Kenny (telecom tech by weekday, hunter by weekend... maybe end up being a slot 3/4 hybrid, or a slot 4 depending on build)

Re: OOC: Character Creation

This was brought up in PM: when you do create your characters, don't make them useless in combat. This is not necessarily a combat-oriented game, but if your character hides in the corner every time bullets start flying, that's not much fun for anyone.

Re: OOC: Character Creation

I've been moved to role 3, and Tobias will be filling the special role 4 position. While my theoretical knowledge of d20 modern is pretty good, my practical knowledge is more lacking. So which skills, in your practical experiences, would be useful for a skill-monkey in d20M to take?

As the resident skill-monkey in previous games, I suggest the following:

Language skills
computer use
disable device
research
repair
all knowledge skills
demolitions, if no one else has it
forgery, same as demolitions

Re: OOC: Character Creation

Language and Knowledges I'll look into then, as much as plausible.

Computer use, disable device, research, and repair generally seemed useful.

Does anybody have Demolitions or Forgery? :P
I'm planning to go into Shadowjack, since it's the most IT-focused advanced class out there (a bit weak on the physical systems aspect); and that doesn't have Demolitions as a class skill (and because Smart Hero does, I don't think I can get it with an occupation).

Re: OOC: Character Creation

Everything Tobias said is on track. In addition I would add:

Profession is useful, since you will have to purchase your own equipment (while you are technically employees of the company, you are really closer to outside consultants).

You can probably ignore drive and pilot completely, as cars/airplanes + online = horrible beyond belief.

Craft isn't important, but if you invest in it I will make sure that you have downtime to use it. Gamble is fun for roleplaying purposes, but uness you play a compulsive gambler, I wouldn't expect it to be used a lot.

Also, you can choose a skill from an occupation that is already a class skill. In that case you get a +1 bonus, and the skill stays a class skill for all your classes. So if you decided to take demolitions, you could take (*picks from top of head*) the Military occupation, and take Demolitions as one of your class skills. If your first class is Smart hero, you get an automatic +1 bonus to your Demo rolls, and no matter what classes you move into after that, they treat Demo as a class skill. It adds a whole new level of fun when you are trying to forward-plan as to what advanced/prestige classes you want to take!

Re: OOC: Character Creation

I like to do it 1 level at a time so I don't get confused. This is especially helpful since you gained an Int point at 4th level.

1 = 48 ([9+3]*4)
2 = 12
3 = 12
4 = 11 (7+4)
5 = 11
6 = 11
--------
103 points.

I count 104 total ranks, so you are over by 1 if I calculated everything correctly. You don't gain a skill point in Speak Language if you increase your Intelligence after level 1, and that's probably what you did.

Optimization-wise, I'll let the other players answer. I wouldn't want to bias you :)

Overlap certainly isn't bad, especially on the research skill. The others, though, one of us might want to pull ranks and put it into something else (can't do that with research and decipher script, as those are needed by my advanced class).

Re: OOC: Character Creation

My skill ranks are really weird. I can't get the same number twice. I'll need to rework them completely.

http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/R...Language_(MSRD_Skill) lists Gaelic (Irish) as a language. "Irish" is shorter, but I should probably write Gaelic.

And Decipher Script is a key skill for one of my class features. Hm. It's not a major class feature, I'll leave you to that then.
Finley has one rank in theology, it's hardly a major focus of his. It will probably get cut in the rework anyway.
Forgery can go, then; and if we need to cover a gap Research can be cut as well.

What else do you have? Is Philosophy/Theology your second skill for Educated?

Specifically, I have a question that does not intersect necessarily with Tobias. Does Miri have Investigate at a reasonable competency level? What do y'all have at all, skill-wise? Miri has social skills, Tobias has arcane skills, I just posted my tech skills; but if someone dips out of stereotype that might cause overlap. And I don't feel like spamming the thread every time I rework my skills.

PS: I'm just going straight smart hero now. I'll pick up Navigate so that with incantations and Tobias, we can use scry-and-die tactics. Satellite Tracking + Teleport + massive damage = win. nvm that

Re: OOC: Character Creation

Hey, pestering is why I created this thread.

I've been talking to Miri on IM... she won't be able to get to her character until at least tomorrow, but she wants to go into Investigator, so she will have lots of points in Investigate, Sense Motive, and Gather Information. Not sure about Diplomacy yet, but probably at least half ranks.

Also I had a PM question regarding FX items. In general, I won't allow them, but any items which could reasonably be created with technology I will consider (so Animated Tools are out, but Eagle Eye Sunglasses are in). Magic items might exist in the campaign, but they are very rare and almost always ancient (so a Holy Beretta doesn't exist, but a 1000-year-old Holy Longsword might... if you can find a way to wrest it from the Catholic Church). If you are interested in FX items, send me a list before you buy equipment, and I'll try and see if we can put a technological spin on them.

Finally, in other news, today is Thursday, so we are about half way through character creation. Nobody has their sheet completely finished yet, but that's totally ok. I'm still planning on making the first in-game post next Monday, so you still have plenty of time. Happy building :)

Re: OOC: Character Creation

I've heard of you, jdrmm. I think it was that god game of yours, one of the ads.

Your action points are listed as 39 (lifetime). So you don't get rid of them when you level? I'm used to D&D 3.5, but more important Star Wars Saga - where Force Points go away each level. I'll have to revise that on my sheet, then, maybe...

Importantly, I R D20M nubi. Any questions I ask are just that - questions. If they happen to make you think more about optimization, that's great. But following any "advice" I imply might be dangerous.

Climb and Jump were houseruled to be automatic class skills, so the thing you'd get from having them as occupation skills is a +1 to both.

Acrobatic, Athletic, Stealthy and Focused are skill feats. That's great, but since you're not using Concentration the focused feat seems a bit weak. Athletes don't need to be maxxed in every physical field.
Brawl still deals nonlethal damage. Nonlethal damage has to overcome damage threshold the first try to do anything. You're dealing 1d6+2 damage. On a crit, that's an average of 11 - liable to be useless. Normal damage is max 8 (again, useless) or 16 on a crit (good, but max damage crits are not the most likely occurence). But then again, both choices aren't the best; and it's likely in-character to not know how to kill people with swords.
You were described as a handguns expert. Handguns can't make Attacks of Opportunity (see: Combat Reflexes) unless the MSRD is lying to me. Double Tap would be nice to push up damage and take advantage of d20 modern's massive damage rules.

Re: OOC: Character Creation

Action points are set at 9 (6 + 1/2 your level). There's not really a rule for how many to start with if you don't start at level 1, so I just kinda made it up.

Handguns can not be fired to make attacks of opportunity (though you can use a rifle butt or pistol whip attack using the weapon), and in fact provoke AoO's when used in melee. (The only way to avoid this AoO provocation is to take at least two levels in Gunslinger.)

In the physical book there's a great list of gun-related feats on page 101, that could help you find better feats for a guns-heavy character. (In case you don't have the book: Advanced firearms proficiency, burst fire, dead aim, double tap, far shot, point blank shot, precise shot, quick draw, quick reload, shot on the run, skip shot, strafe, two-weapon fighting). If you are only going to do handguns, then you really don't have much need for advanced firearms proficiency, burst fire, or strafe. I've never created a ranged character that didn't have Point Blank Shot (in d20 Modern as well as D&D), and Precise Shot is usually next on my list. Far shot and Dead aim are aimed (no pun intended) more at sniper characters, but if you have the feats there's no reason you couldn't take them. Double tap is always a fun feat. 3dx damage? Yes please!

Also, don't forget about your Talents, I don't see them listed on your character sheet anywhere.

Lastly, don't forget you can re-roll 1's on HP.

Re: OOC: Character Creation

You said in your PM that you have played D&D 3.5 before, so I'm assuming a good working knowledge. If I'm moving too quickly just let me know!

The Gunslinger is just like a prestige class in D&D (see the description here: http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/M...nslinger_%28Class%29 ). If you want to take it, you first need to meet the prerequisites. For you that probably means you can take three levels of Fast and three levels of Gunslinger.

As for feats... the "character" feats (athletic, focused, etc) are nice, but it's rare that people take more than one or two. There's no real set number that you need. For the gun feats, I would read over their descriptions in the MSRD and see which ones sound the most interesting to you. I definitely won't punish you if you don't push your character to the limit, but you are kind of punishing yourself if you don't take at least precise shot (otherwise, everytime you shoot into melee you get a -4 penalty to your attack roll).

Also, about talents: every basic class (fast, strong, etc), gets "talents" that they can pick from every other level. This is instead of a standard feature that you are used to in D&D (*every* barbarian gets increased speed, *every* ranger gets track, and *every* fast gets a talent... but that could be any number of things). It varies from class to class, but in general, each talent in any given category is a prerequisite for the next talent on the list.

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Re: OOC: Character Creation

Couple things I notice right away: one is I don't see your Weapon Focus feat anywhere. Gunslinger 2 gives you weapon focus with one type of personal firearm. Also, you have a lot of weapons. Were you just deciding between a couple?

Other than that and a few minor issues (you start with 9 action points, and you need to decide which languages you spend your skill points on), everything else looks ok.

I will be posting the first game post shortly. Only one player has their character 100% complete, and nobody has their descriptiosn or backgrounds finalized. The sooner you get your "fluff" in order, the sooner you will be able to properly roleplay. And the sooner you get your "cruch" in order, the sooner you will be able to start rollin' some (virtual) dice!

Re: OOC: Character Creation

You get any one language for free. Since the campaign is centered in America, I'm assuming everyone will choose English. And no, you don't have to take any guns out (as long as you can afford them, I didn't check your math), I just don't see why you wanted so many. Maybe your character is a collector, and that's totally fine. I had a melee character once who owned almost one of every ancient weapon. He kept them in a vault in his house :)

Re: OOC: Character Creation

Appearance: Xavier is 5'11, 185 lbs., with long, blond hair and light blue-gray eyes that seem to shine in the light. He is built, but more of a runner's body than that of a weightlifter's, from years of running track and field. He has a slight blond goatee which he keeps finely trimmed and neat. His smile is captivating and charming, and he always seems to be in a good mood. His everyday outfit composes of wife-beaters and jeans, with combat boots. His skin is caramel, descending from his Hispanic mother.

Background: Xavier's life can be centered around one thing; the military. His father, General Angel Solomon, was a strong-willed pilot in the Air Force, and very well known for his radical stunts and carefully calculated air tactics. He moved around from place to place, which is how he met his mother, Delilah, in Spain, during a mission. They fell in loved and she moved to America with him, but always moving around. Xavier grew up moving around, but everywhere he went he was sure to leave an impression with his athleticism and charisma. His military career was set ever since he stepped foot in high school, he was signed on at 17 for the Army. He's been rising up ever since, his biggest accomplishments include fighting in Central American skirmishes as well as serving in Iraq. His mother is worried sick about his life, but his father couldn't be more proud. He was recruited by The Company at a young age, and was somehow excused from his Active Duty to join. He now loves his job as a bounty hunter for all the freaks that seem to appear in the world.

Also, you don't have to be done with your characters to start posting.

Re: OOC: Character Creation

Well at a minimum, bullets would be pretty helpful :) For the Berettas you need 9mm ammo, the Glock takes 10mm, and the Skorpion uses .32 cal, all of which are DC 5 for a box of 50 rounds. (Since your starting wealth is higher than 5 you essentially get all these for free. They just aren't on your sheet yet.)

Beyond that there's nothing that you necessarily need, but if you want to carry all 4 guns at once you will need some way to hold them (holster, bag, gun case, shoebox, etc.) and extra magazines (DC 4) are helpful for reloading.

Then there's the random "I may never need it but it's practically free" stuff like duct tape, flashlight, Tic-Tacs and what have you.

Re: OOC: Character Creation

If he wants to go the military route he could get a fatigue jacket or photojournalist's vest (DC 7 and 9, respectively). Or if he's the grunge type he could just go for cargo pants (no cost). Or depending on how much ammo he has, he might just carry one extra mag, which could fit in any normal pocket. I'm not a real stickler about it, as long as it makes sense.

You also have a home base (likely an apartment or rent house, unless you pay to upgrade) so you don't have to worry about keeping all 200 rounds (or whatever the number is) at your person at one time.

Re: OOC: Character Creation

You can do it however you want. Since Tobias already has his character finished it would probably be easiest if he tells you what gaps need filled (his skill list is probably in this thread somewhere already). Or if you've got the time and inclination you can create your character completely then tweak it later.

Also, we now have 3 full-time players. I think I've given up on our sniper, as I haven't heard from him in well over two weeks now. I have one other guy I'll invite, but don't wait for him; create your characters and if he wants to join we can find a spot for him.

Well I'll start working on the character a bit tonight, and should have it pretty much finished for Thursday, I expect.

I'm thinking a cross-class between Fast Hero and Charismatic Hero with a few levels in Negotiator. He's got Law Enforcement as a background, and will be proficient with personal firearms, as well as possible automatic weapons. That's all I've got so far.

Ok people, let's plan on the big "reboot" sometime tomorrow. If you don't have your characters finished by then you can still play, but you will auto-fail any rolls, if any are made.

I will find a way to insert you into the current story (and sorry if it's cheasy!), so if you haven't already, read over the current game thread.
