I was asked if stealing was evil.
There have been at least two cases of the party stealing in the past.
They stole the Eburacon's songbook from an Empire merchant who bought it from Jacob, and returned the book to the Harpers. They had some moral issues with this, but felt that the Harpers were the rightful owners. They also passed up the opportunity to steal other valuable items from the merchant.
Our Triplefang heroes also stole a magical helmet for the demon Xyzeryx in return for the life of an innocent girl he had (accidently?) captured. As it turned out Xyzeryx also gave them the dimensional crossbow Sunna carries as a reward. Still, the idea of stealing the helmet from the dwarves in the first place did not sit well with several in the party.
Who you're stealing from is important. I don't think the party would've had any moral issues stealing from Xyzeryx. They certainly didn't mind hauling away a ton of Kelney Sewell's loot. You probably wouldn't call that stealing, though.
Another interesting discussion is whether stealing is more on the Lawful - Chaotic axis. I'd lean toward calling it chaotic more than evil. I think the Evil - Good ramifications are based on who the theft harms and benefits. There's the classic steal from the rich give to the poor case.
The party's mix of alignments has changed as we've gone from Holly, Mord, Snow, and Glumr to Farden to Adiel and Sunna, Ros and Ragnar. The party now is either Neutral Good or one step away from the alignment. I would argue that Holly is also Neutral Good, striving to see the wisdom of True Neutral. (Don't worry, no in game issues with this.) Here's what the wikipedia says about Neutral
Good:
quote:
Neutral good
A neutral good character typically acts altruistically, without regard for or against lawful precepts such as rules or tradition. A neutral good character has no problems with cooperating with lawful officials, but does not feel beholden to them. In the event that doing the right thing requires the bending or breaking of rules, they do not suffer the same inner conflict that a lawful good character would.
I'd say you're completely in the clear stealing from Kadrick if he really is the monster some have made him out to be.
