The expedition

Zmija, on foot, leads the party through the rough hill terrain of the Crimean. He is very fleet of foot, not a match for a horse in any way but on this terrain he can easily keep in the lead but surely he must get tired after jogging so far.

He seems unconcerned about any sort of riding order and seems to be happy to let the party sort this out for themselves.

Taking a spot near that back of the party, Loukas keeps his short bow and an arrow ready.

While there was something unnerving about the holy man, seeing Zmija's ease of movement so far, he can not help but feel a bit envious. Being on foot in these mountains could be quite an advantage... "Given the terrain before us it seems unlikely that our mounts legs might actually be a disadvantage here. After all, this place is better made for mountain goats or mules than warhorses, eh? Come, fellows, it is too early in this mission to be biting at each others' heels."

Balthazar says to Zmija, "Ah, you belong to an Order diametrically opposed to mine.  To bring your body and mind to such a fine state of conditioning takes considerable self-denial.  While I can clearly see the benefits of your rigors in the skills you are putting on display, I believe ascetic abnegation runs counter to the human condition.  Perhaps after this mission you'll at least submit to trying my chocolate mousse cake?  It's a specialty of mine I learned during my time in the Frankish heartland a few years back."

"That would be great, Michael."

(OOC: Maybe I've lost track of how long it's been, but I highly doubt the spell has worn off yet.  If MIchael has an average intelligence of 11, he doesn't get a new saving throw for 3 weeks.  Furthermore, that's just a new save, and a 0 level human needs a 19, which is only a 10% chance.  So every 3 weeks Michael has a 10% chance to shake off the spell, so that averages out to something like 30 weeks for a single casting.)

I know I'm going to regret this, but Balthazar swaps out shield for charm person from his memorized list, seeing as how we may need to convince some enemies to let us past.

So far as we know the city has plenty of liquid fire in its stores and all of our ships continue to be made of wood, no? As things stand now, the city's position is much stronger than ours. All I am suggesting is that we should take a look for ourselves and if we can determine a way to damage it, then we should do so. Then we can return to the Knyaz and let him determine next best steps, which is to say, negotiating the city's surrender as it begins to die of thirst. Of course, if we do not have the capability amongst us to do significant damage to the aqueduct, then we will have to return and get assistance, but a little initiative taken now would lead to a surer, sooner victory."

Turning to A'kos, "We should also do our best to avoid patrols. Defeating a patrol is good sport, but doing so will inform the city that we know their weakness (the aqueduct) and they will put up a more active defense of it... And, we would lose the advantage of surprise."

Re: The expedition

The byzantine breaks his long silence "Sires, if I may..."

"The strategy presented by Loukas certainly has in its favor the possibility of victory with minimum bloodshed. A desirable goal, even weighting it against its obvious dishonorable quality. Zmija ensures us that he speaks in name of Sviatoslav and he approves it. There are, however, a few points that speak against such course of action."

"First, with all respect to you, Zmija, is that we do not know if Sviatoslav would personally concur. Even if all goes well the rus army may find itself soon enough in the position of defending the recently occupied city, and then our own strategy would turn against us. Yet more grave, destroying the acqueduct will affect the populace before it hits the military. If the defendants decide to hold for as long as they can our eventual victory would deliver us a city filled with sick, dying and angry people. Occupying a settlement in such a situation is dangerous to say the least, and it is a decision that should not be made by a scouting party without knowledge of the commander in charge."

"Finally, though you are mostly heathen, it is my duty to advise you against inflicting punishment over the innocent, even in an act of war. You have seen the effects of powers greater than mortal men, such powers make no distinction between those who are faithful and those who are not. Bear that in mind and heart, for such matters rest solely on the own decisions of each one."

Loukas chuckles, "You all sound more like a bunch of bureaucrats than warriors."

Continuing he glances at Rus cleric, "Perhaps the most important point is that none of you seemed to have heard Zmija when he said that has the authority to make a decision in this matter in the Knyaz's name. This is the reason Sviatoslav sent him to join us on the Heart of Oak, eh?

"Let us also remember that the entire point of the Knyaz's little holiday here to Khorsun is to seize the city, and strategically speaking, taking it with a minimum amount of loss is to our advantage. For that matter, forcing them to stop fighting for fear of thirst and starvation is far kinder than the alternative, even if it lacks the glorious luster of a bloody fight on the walls and the rapine that typically follows such.

"Finally, we need not destroy the aqueduct, only damage it sufficiently. I suggest that while damaging it we send to the fleet and inform the Knyaz of what we are doing. This way, by the time the city realizes what we have done they can not make repairs. Though we are still likely to have to defend it ourselves until relief comes... Ultimately, once we have taken the city the Knyaz will be able to repair the Aqueduct and things will continue on under his control as they have under the Basilius's."

[OOC: No I will not be goaded into a fighting a monk unarmed. I made it clear to the GM that if he gave anything other then an apology Jean would attack. Since he spoke before he threw his weapon down (and btw Zmija has had a staff in his hand the whole time Loukas) Jean will be attacking him either before or while he is casting it aside. In any case it is a few centuries yet before chivalry is to be invented.

Needless to say there will not be time for all this side conversation and attempts at stepping between them. The discussion hasn't been about the aquaduct for some time but rather about whether or not Jean will tolerate being spoken to in a derogatory manner. He will not. He asked for an apology several times and got threats. Truthfully I believe I should have attacked him long before now but I only just noticed that he isn't a PC and was trying to avoid a killing fight with a fellow player.

Regardless it is, as they say, on.]

After he attacks (and assuming Zmija will still be standing which I do) Jean will speak.

"That you are qualified to perform your duties I have no doubt but no man on Earth, be he pagan, Christian, or God help me, the Messiah himself will speak thus to me, meeting each opportunity to recant with new threats and insults, and not face combat."

A'kos leads the way to the aqueduct followed closely by Jaleh on her fine Arabian.

When they get there is is as Loukas thought, the outer cement layer was missing and on the ground leaving only the fragile ceramic tube in place...at least for the 10 foot section of aqueduct before them. There looks to be some abandoned tools and other work items around as well giving the hint that perhaps this section was under repair when the alarm was raised by the attack on the city.

This section does not look hard to break at all if it comes to that.

Zmija scouts around the area as the others look to the works in front of them. A few moments later the monk returns with an urgent look on his face and he flashes the five fingers of his right hand three times and then quickly points south along the pipeline as he makes the motion for silence, a lone finger to his lips, with his left hand.

All those who looked for a good place to conceal themselves do so without any trouble among the boulders and brush near the aqueduct. Michael does his best to keep the horses quiet and out of sight.

Only A'kos, Jean, Conn and Roderychus remain on the trail and can be seen by the approaching troupe. At first sight they are about 60 feet away and are completely taken by surprise by the sight of four horsemen in their path.

The party is all surprised by what they see, rather than a unit of Imperial soldiers they see a band of 15 mixed Pecheneg, Orc and half-orcs dressed in a mish-mash of tribal and Byzantine armor and weaponry. They are all armed with the short composite bow of the Turkish steppe dwellers and a curved saber and round shield.

Pechenegs are a Turkish tribe that in habit the area...in our game world, they are closely allied with Orcish tribes of the steppe and often serve an mercenaries in the area to  he highest bider and that usually is the Byzantine government.

Once she was among the boulders, Jaleh secured the horses reigns under a smaller stone so that it would not wander off and give her away. She then readied her shortbow and shimmied up the side of a larger rock, where she leaned back, laying her body against the side of it to minimize her profile and remain unseen. With those prepartions done, Jaleh cautiously nocked an arrow and began to take aim at one of the important looking Orcs. Orcs were big and brutish, she reasoned, take down the biggest among them and the rest would likely flee, or at very least begin to lose hope.

She waited and held her time for a good time to strike and then let the arrow fly. At the worse possible moment her shot was foiled by a fly in her eye.

Today: Jaleh rolled 86 using 1d100 for assasination attempt (failed).

Not only are the riders taken by surprise but they are in a state of panic/confusion making all attacks on them +1 this round.

Parties actions now...they are still 60 feet away, perfect for a charge on horseback but not on foot. If you have already rolled this rounds attack, I ask you do it again giving yourself +1 to hit.

Re: The expedition

Jaleh, Loukas and Balthazar each loose a volley of arrows at the horsemen as the others charge them. Balthazar and Loukas each land one of two shots scoring wounding hits on different horsemen. Jaleh manages to kill one outright with a precise deadly shot into the brain via the eye.

Jean is the first to slam into the confused group of Orcish riders landing a very solid blow to one the foes hit by Balthazar's arrow. The tip of his lance slams into then out of the horseman as the beastmans life exits his body.

A'kos following closely on the heel of Jean smites one of the foe a terrible rocking him on his horse. The orcsih warrior is able to retain his seat but just barely.

Roderychus and his mount launch into the group of foeman in a flurry of blade, teeth and hoof leaving one of the Orcs unhorsed and severely injured.

Conn attacks the orc shot by Loukas but has little luck against the beast.

Still suffering from his battle with Sir Jean, Zmija is the last to hit the enemy, his first attack is caught on the enemies shield but his second stuns the orcish warrior and sets him on the ground with a dazed look on his face.

The orcs, though now outnumbered heavily keep on fighting. The beast engaged with A'kos manages to land a shot but much of it is absorbed by the Magyars armor

The orc engaged with Roderychus is unable to get through the Byzantine Knights armor. The same with the orc engaged with Conn, even with Loukas arrow sticking out of him he can do nothing.

1 orc engaged with A'kos, 1 with Conn, Zmija has stunned the last. Man that was pretty fast and furious. These guys were pretty tough, you did well. It owuld have been Hellish if Balthazar had not had such a great result. Actions?

Sir Jean joins Conn in his attack on the Orc and soon the beast lay in two pieces at their feet.

Roderychus also makes quick work of the Orc he is engaged with finishing it with a thrust through it's unarmored neck as Zmija pounces on his stunned opponent and delivers a series of devastating blows that kill the fallen Pecheneg orc.

A'kos has less luck with his foe as his sword is caught on the round shield. The orc has similar luck as A'kos parries the beast blow with his own blade.

Loukas and Jaleh quickly dispatch the beasts under Balthazar's sleep spell with both arrow and blade.

The only Pecheneg/Orc still alive is the one engaged with A'kos...this battle has taken the form of individual combat at this point as the two seem relatively well matched. The Orc looks the same as the others but seems to have more skill than they displayed.

Zmija stands back from the combat and holds his hand up signaling to the others to let this combat between the two proceed.

He looks to Loukas and says..."Yes, we should take the horses and at least the weapons, can I count on you to secure the items to one of the mounts? We need to get moving if we wish to meet the others before nightfall. With any luck they will be waiting on us at the opposite shore." As he speaks, the monk helps to round up the gear from the fallen Orcs to take and pack on the horses.

Re: The expedition

While the loot is being loaded Jean, still smiling faintly, rides off a short distance to be certain they are not about to have more company.

Re: The expedition

Loukas responds to the Monk, "Yes, Zmija, I shall endeavor to do so."

As begins to deal with the gear and the horses he turns to the party, "Another pair of hands or two will make this happen faster, my friends"

Given the need to get going Loukas makes an effort not to bring along any item that is not in good condition. Otherwise he uses his experience on his father's merchant caravans to pack the horses as securely as possible.

Jaleh tethers her horse to something nearby so it would stay put and then joins in the scavenging with the others.

Re: The expedition

Within twenty minutes the bodies are striped and the gear loaded onto the horses. Enough gear to equip a similar sized patrol, while not gems and gold, this is still a valuable haul including the mounts, all light warhorses of decent quality.

Zmija gives the signal to head out and A'kos falls right back into the role of a steppe horseman as he guides the captured mounts with just his horse and skill alone.

Re: The expedition

The rest of the day is fairly uneventful, the city remains on the parties right hand side at a safe distance. occasionally guards can be seen on the wall but are too far away to fire any missile weapons at the party.

By dusk the party reaches sea and the far east wall of the city. A lone dragon ship can be seen a few hundred feet off shore with an unmistakable outline.

Re: The expedition

"Aye Jean, that is the Heart...but as A'kos points out, there was a signal needed. Thought he ship is easy to spot, we are not in the low light. This is something Miroslav and I had talked about."

He then reaches in his belt pouch and produces a round object wrapped in heavy cloth about the size of a plumb. As he begins to unwrap the object the is bathed in a bright light. From inside the cloth he takes out a glowing orb. Anyone familiar with magic will see this as an object that a permanent light spell had been cast on.

Zmija takes this glowing ball and tosses it high in the air clearly as a signal tot he ship.

Re: The expedition

Signal is obviously received as the Heart of Oak heads for the beach.

Everyone now go to the thread titled "reunion". Xp will be dished out shortly.
