The search for Sir Jean

Rosie dawn spread across the Caucus mountains bathing the Heart of Oak in a pink light. Miroslav as always was awake well before the break of day. He waits on deck for a few moments than grabs his axe and slams the haft down of the deck of the ship several times to make sure everyone is awake.

"We are headed for shore soon and will begin the process of getting our comrade back with us...I ask you all...who is coming?"

Loukas rises and scratching his beard he raises a brow at A'kos's comment about his horse, "I am going as well. I do not need a horse, but would be happy if whomever would have watched mine would mind A'kos's mount. Would hate to think what would happen if the dear man was unable to focus on the matter at hand.... I can imagine him fainting on the battle field already upon learning the poor beast has an upset tummy or some other discomfort."

Turning to Balthazar,

"There was a child involved who discovered the cube's properties," growls A'kos.  "Pyotr, or some such.  He paid for his involvement after accidentally releasing the hellspawn Basrakan.  Seems to be a door of sorts to other," struggling a moment the Falcon finally settles on, "realms."

Nodding toward Balthazar and Dyanna he finishes, "They've been the item's wardens since then."

Loukas rubs his eyes and stands smiling resignedly, "Well, Cuivi, technically Sir Jean does deserve to have been captured by Basrakan. However, that is because when Pytor released the Efreet Lord, Sir Jean used its offer of wishes to send him back from where he had come. In doing so, it should be added, the Frank also healed hundreds of sick and wounded civilians and soldiers. Not only a clever act, but one of great wisdom.

"In other words, one completely different from that which got him into the position he in right now, though Basrakan has certainly been awaiting him to be vulnerable since that day, what, two years ago or more?"

"The cube apparently permits one to access different realms..."

Looking around at the group, "Am I correct in remembering that the realm Baskaran had been sent to was a frozen one? If I am, this means that he has since escaped from whomever had entrapped him. It seems most likely that we shall be visiting the realm of elemental fire..."

Maybe I could teach you a trick or two I have learned from Master Zmija and my brethren of Volos that you might use the next brawl?

Re: The search for Sir Jean

Its something to do, and truth is that A'kos found muscles stretching he'd scarcely used in many a year.  Legs warped from too many hours in a saddle, arms and back sculpted by the weight of blade and armor, still there were many strange twitches and strains the longer they went on beneath the sun bronzed skin of the Magyar.  Finally, some hour into the regimen A'kos laughed and halted; heaving to his feet rubbed his hammies deeply.

"Enough, enough, friend Loukas!" he cried with a mock grimace.  "My arse will ride even more sore for these exercises you would teach me!  You'll find me not so willing a pupil next time, eh?"

Turning then, he called back to Jaleh.

"Some wine, woman, then your gentle ministrations!"

Chuckling, he waved a friendly hand toward Loukas and headed back toward the ship.

Good, then I get to disregard the second (lame) roll on A'kos.

Balthazar switches focus to Barmak, and assuming you're of the fighter class (so I roll a d8):

21:28, Today: Balthazar the Hedonite rolled 4 using 1d8. strength on Barmak.

Okay, that's 4 points.  So, for instance, if your normal strength is 15, that puts you at 15 -> 16 -> 17 -> 18/01 -> 18/11.

So Balthazar boosts A'kos to 77 + 10 = 18/87, good for +2 to hit +4 to damage.

Balthazar will reserve a spell slot on a daily basis for A'kos from now on.

The hot air blasts your face as you all walk through the portal, Miroslav in the lead with Barmak coming through last.

For those of you who have been to the desert, this is pretty much what you are used to but the sky is red. Hot as can be but not humid.

Now that you are through you can see much more of the landscape and the paved road. The road itself leads to a fortress that looks to be made of some sort of red metal...it lies to the east only about a half of a mile away.

Balthazar casts invisibility, protection from evil, and fly.  He tells the party that he is going ahead to scout but not to wait for his return.  He concludes, "Ideally, you keep Baskrakan occupied and one of my two charm spells works.  Then we bring the big fire guy back with us to help summon Phasis."

Balthazar flies off to inspect the fortress.

Within 10 minute the party finds itself outside the fortress near the rocks which provide next to no cover.

The fortress looks to be made of some sort of red iron. It is relatively small and it looks to be beyond solidly built. The windows are high and too small from entrance. The gate is also made of the same material as the walls. THe roof is gabled and there does not seem to be a flat surface to land on.

Basrakan is taken by total surprise as A'kos rushes in and lands a cut to his torso. Jean follows from behind and also lands a heavy cut with his frost brand. The cut does not bleed liquid, instead it freezes open.

THe battle falls away from the door and back into the chamber at this point.

Dyanna's volley or arrows fail to hit their mark, one hits but harmlessly bounces off. Both Jaleh and Loukas rush into the doorway, Jaleh makes her way behind the Efreeti while Loukas launches himself and his feet at the leg of the huge Basrakan. The creature winces slightly and looks down at Loukas with a scowl. Last through the doorway is Miroslav wheeling his axe high overhead. It crashes down into the Efreeti's leg near where Loukas had just attacked him.

Basrakan is bloodied and battered but still powerful in his own home. He quickly raises a hand and point in the air right before his face an bellows "FIRE!"

A fireball explodes filling the room with flame. Only those who came through the door are in the blast radius.

Miroslav completely fails to see the impending doom of the fireball and takes a full dose of the flame, luckily he is a tough bastard. Both Loukas and Jaleh manage to roll to some cover but are both burned fairly bad.

Both Jean and A'Kos wear a ring of fire protection and it shows. Even though both take the full blast, their injuries are minor compared to the Big Rus.

As soon as the blast finishes the magic missile attack of Balthazar staggers the Efreeti through the large door. Two strikes by Loukas followed by a heavy attack from A'Kos sends Basrakan to the floor. The efreeti who has been the sworn enemy of the party looks to be dead on his home plane in his own home.

"It is a shame we could not have left him alive. I guess there was little choice. What if he would have used his magic on us again? Surely one or more would not be alive."

She looks at Jean,

"Jean, it is good to see you alive!"

Re: The search for Sir Jean

Loukas, having landed his blows and seeing the Efreet fall takes a breath. And the pain of the bastard's fire washes over him. He managed to avoid most of it, but that which touched him as left its mark. Taking another breath he steadies himself and as he does so he realizes that he never felt pain like this. He has never been quite this hurt. There is an analytic side of his mind that is fascinated by this experience, but it's a rather small bit of his overall mind and now that he does not have Basrakan to distract his mind the part which is not attempting analysis is screaming at the top of its metaphorical lungs.

Partially out of sudden self-consciousness and partially out of a desire for distraction from the burn that covers much of his body he takes one more breath, spins and with a shout, "Your flames are nothing for the waters of Veles, you bastard, and I send you to HIM!", he lands a final kick followed by two more blows on the Efreet Lord, just to be certain that he is actually dead.

"Nice little scrap," he says jubilantly.  "Next time, let's find something worthy of our strength!"

As Barmak enters and makes his suggestion he nods enthusiastically.

"Aye, the spoils of victory!"

Hearing Dyanna he looks with concern to Jaleh.  Seeing her wounds he rushes over and offers, "Oy, little one, worry not...your hair will grow back!"

To Jean he adds, "Welcome back to the living, brother."

A self satisfied smirk remains upon his face as he awaits the party's next move.

Balthazar flies in and chastises Jean, "Good, because next time you want to pull a stunt like that, check with me first.  One protection from missiles spell as applied by me could have saved you 100% of the damage you took from those amazon arrows."

Then he addresses everyone, "I was really hoping for those 3 wishes, but he just wouldn't fall to my charm spell.  Oh well, let's loot the place."

Following Barmak's trap detecting, Balthazar and the party conduct a pleasant treasure hunt.

For the moment loot was not at the forefront of Loukas's mind. Having recovered himself he turns away from Barakan's corpse towards the party, "It is good to see you alive Frank and I am glad to hear that you've learned something important about life and your god from your experience, but as Balthazar suggests if you do not learn something of strategy and tactics you will not have long to enjoy it.

"And while you are learning it, perhaps you can teach it to our Magyar? For example, had Jaleh been given the chance to move into position before you attacked, and been able to take him from behind, things might have gone even better, eh? What would your brawn and sword do for her in the condition she is now if we were not fortunate enough to have Good Father Cuivi with us?"

He takes a small drink of recently boiled water from his waterskin as Barmak approaches the body and helps him to take whatever valuables the Efreet bears away and then endeavors to help him find whatever else is in the castle.

Turning cold, then, he adds, "And your criticisms are as effectual as your kicks upon the corpse, and less well received.  Our goal is achieved, and all here will return alive to our homes.  And none here would have felt worse than I had Jaleh, or any here, fallen...yet that risk we all share wherever we go.  If that is not enough for you than next time you can stay home."

Finished, A'kos flicks efreet ichor from the tip of his sword in disgust and awaits the two who search the corpse.

Miroslav is still fairly crispy but as said before, he could more than absorb the damage done to him.

Cuivi collapses after all the energy from several healing spells have passes through him. He is awake but exhausted.

As the party inspects the huge body of Basrakan they find a ruby necklace with several huge gems, it should be worth quit a bit of gold if sold to a collector. Other than that the body is near naked except for a loin cloth and sandals. There is still the rest of the keep to explore.

The structure is actually smaller on the inside than it looks from the outside due to the thick walls. Nothing seems to be either locked or trapped with in the structure. Clearly Basrakan had no fear of being robbed.

After a few minutes o f searching the party come upon Basrakan's private chamber and here they find the loot all safely tucked away in a few chests.

In the first chest is a bag that contains 70 fire opals.
Also in the first chest is a small jewel box containing 15 pieces of platinum and gem jewelry.
In a small case is a plain brass ring. Also there is a short quartz encrusted wand.

In the larger second chest there is a variety of objects:
A small brass brazier
an Ivory flute
an Iron flask
scale armor
a scimitar of excellent quality
a mace of similar quality
leather gloves, doeskin.

While the party takes all the goodies, Balthazar will make a detailed map of the interior of the building.  Then he will fly around the outside, and make a detailed exterior map.  Then he will compare the two and make sure that they line up correctly accounting for the wall thickness.  He is checking to see if mapping will reveal a secret room.

Cool!

Okay, assuming everything the DM listed is, in fact, magical, Balthazar takes the following guesses regarding functionality:

plain brass ring - fire resistance, most likely

quartz encrusted wand - could be anything.  Balthazar examines to see if a trigger phrase is etched onto it somewhere.

A small brass brazier - fire elemental summoning.  Probably m-u only.

an Ivory flute - don't know

an Iron flask - extra-planar entity capturing device.  Anyone can use it, but if the entity turns on the possessor after being released, you'll want to have cast protection from evil beforehand, so this should probably go to someone who has access to that

scale armor - probably just a bonus to ac

a scimitar of excellent quality - could just have a bonus, could be scimitar of speed.  Balthazar is proficient in scimitar, though he has the +4 defender already.

a mace of similar quality - another weapon with bonus

leather gloves, doeskin. - probably boosts dexterity

Loukas takes a sip from his cup and leans back as he replies to Jean, "Well, as I said, Balthazar made some very good guesses:

Ring of fire resistance
Wand of magic detection
Braizer of commanding fire elementals
Scale shirt +2
Scimitar +2
Mace +2
Gauntlets of dexterity
There is nothing magical about the flute, though it's a lovely instrument...

"Which brings us to the Iron Flask. All I learned from my spell is that it's an artifact of great power. That one will take a bit more study to determine it's actual powers.

"For myself, I too am interested in the Gauntlets, but the ring is no less useful as we've seen recently. Jaleh, Veles's blessings have increased my resistance to fire, so if you would prefer to take the ring rather than the Gauntlets, that would work for me. Otherwise, if your heart is set on them, I would happily take the ring."

When A'kos comments upon the ease with which they have defeated their last two Elemental opponents, Loukas nods in agreement, "Yes. I have had similar thoughts, Falcon, though it also occurs to me that each of us are powerful individuals and when we act in concert those who stand against us are at a great disadvantage. It is also not as if we got through either fight without wounds. Given that it is a item of such magnitude it seems only right that it be considered a something we all have ownership of. Seems reasonable, no?"

Balthazar responds, "No, here's what I think:

Ring of fire resistance - Loukas
Wand of magic detection - Barmak
Braizer of commanding fire elementals - Balthazar
Scale shirt +2 - A'kos
Scimitar +2 - Oleg
Mace +2 - Cuivi
Gauntlets of dexterity - Jaleh
Iron Flask - Cuivi"

Snag!  Balthazar only wears studded leather +1 at present.

(sweet, now he's at ac -1, and can get up to -5 with his defender)

"I will pray over this today, please excuse me."

That said, Cuivi takes his pack and goes to sit under a nearby tree where he produces the flask and sets it before him on the ground.

"Only someone who has the ability to cast protection from evil should dare hold this.  Since Cuivi has tossed it aside, I'll carry it." Balthazar takes it from Miroslav and tucks it away for safe keeping.  "Besides, I'm sure we'll be able to find something for this demon to kill eventually."

Loukas watched Cuivi's reaction and the exchange that followed with curiosity. It seemed oddly irresponsible for the good Father to toss aside an item of such power regardless of its taint. Balthazar is correct, that whomever bears this ought to have proper protections...

With a wry smile and bow, "Have I told you recently Balthazar how much I respect you and find not only your power impressive and intelligence penetrating, but your very way of being continually reminds me that you are the very perimeter of ideal manhood?"

Re: The search for Sir Jean

Balthazar stands up and makes a grand gesture.  "Well, " he proclaims, " if we're going to eat and drink and be merry, we might as well do it the magical way.  Folks, I've been holding out on you all a bit.  Normally, my magical feasts are only for fellow Hedonites, but you have proved yourselves worthy companions beyond reproach, and I don't think the heads of my clan will find anything to gripe about in my treating you all."  He takes a dramatic pause, then with a sweep of his arms, he says, "I will now give you a True Feast of Hedonism!"

A magnificent table appears, laden with delectable fruits, beverages, meats, vegetables, desserts, and place settings for 8.  8 intricately carved chairs are positioned next to those 8 place settings, with plush cushions on the seats and backrests.  3 people also appear.  One is a dignified elderly gentlemen in a butler's uniform, the other two are slender maidens in serving uniforms.  Balthazar introduces the man, "This is Gerard.  He is the head of the serving crew, and if you need anything, just ask him for it."

Gerard bows low and says, "At your service."

Balthazar sits at the head of the table, "Alright, dig in everybody!  You need to feast for an hour for the magic to fully kick in.  It is through these feasts that Hedonites stay in perfect health, despite their sometimes impulsive and risky exploits.  After all, how can you enjoy the world if you're sick?"

Immediate Effects
Everyone is cured of all diseases.  Even the little minor nagging itches and rashes.  You all feel better than you've ever felt.
Everyone is healed for 5-8 hit points (from a nectar beverage on the table)

Effects that last for 12 hours
Immunity to poison
+1 to attacks and morale benefit as per bless spell
Immunity to fear, hopelessness, and panic

Interesting conjecture: despite all the drinks of alcoholic nature on the table, I don't believe anyone gets drunk, because I think that immunity to poison means that all contaminants in the bloodstream are eradicated.

Re: The search for Sir Jean

Loukas does not squeal in joy at the feast and its presentation, but he exudes pleasure. Sometime into the actual eating he raises a glass, "You know, Balthazar, I think your Hedonites and my Velesians have much in common. I have pondered this for a while, but this wonderful meal confirms it. Perhaps when we return we might meet and see if there is not some sort of greater philosophical agreement that might not come out of this?"

Spotting the ring on Jaleh's finger, Loukas raises his glass again, "And to The Falcon and The Fox, may there be many baubles and infinite pleasures in your futures!"

and while he has a better sense of the god's worship than I do we're sort of creating things as we go. Ultimately, Veles is some sort of combination of Mercury, Apollo, and Pluto with a little Loki thrown in. He is the god of earth and water to Pelun's lightning and fire -- hence the Druidism, I think. Anyway, I've been having fun sort of assembling a philosophy, not quite theology, to guide Loukas's actions. Not that I've actually put together in writing anything like what a follower of Veles's philosophy would be mind, you, but just trying to figure it out in my head as we play.]

If the Amazon's have any reserve numbers that might be set upon you, they do not use it and the guards that have been set for the night see nothing suspicious.
