Library

Oleg works through the night to get the ship ready but obviously has had some difficulties, nothing major but it looks as if the ship will be another few hours before departing.

Sir Jean is gone before the break of dawn. No one sees him leave.

By midmorning the ship is ready to leave and Oleg is ready to sleep. Miroslav calls for Barmak to pilot the ship in Oleg's absence. The weather has turned cold and rainy and the winds unfavorable. Most likely there will be more time on the oars spent than usual and the destination will not be met until the rise of the sun.

Balthazar uses a monster summoning spell to get some substitute oarsmen for a few minutes to give everyone a break.

Thanks to Balthazar's summoning spell Loukas and the others are relieved form their oar duties for a time by 8 burly half orc Pecheneg rowers. T Hey don't seem to mind the work nor do they seem confused as to why they are here, they just follow the Hedonties orders until they vanish from sight.

Re: Library

I just realized a big 'ol error on my character sheet; luckily it has never come into play because no one has launched a melee attack at Balthazar.  Check this out from the cloak of protection description:

"Note that this device can be combined with other items, or worn with leather armor. It cannot function in coniunction with any sort of magical armor, normal armor other than that of leather, or in conjunction with a shield of any sort."

Alright, so ... since his cloak is pretty sweet, he can no longer use the studded leather +2 recently handed down to him.  He can pass that off to Jaleh, who can then pass off the studded leather +1 to ... Heinrich?  Do you need some magic armor?

I'm going to retroactively grant Balthazar a suit of leather armor, if that's okay.

Barmak keeps the sight of land off afar to starboard, and he asks the helmsman to notify him if there seems to be a change in the current. In the meantime, he keeps a weather eye out, including what's happening with the sail (if it's up).

[Barmak is relatively new to the game, so I'm assuming the ship is single-masted.]

While the orcs are rowing, he'll walk over to Balthazar, rubbing his hands together, and ask, "Now that's a good trick. What do we expect to find at this library? Whose errands are we running? I'm glad to make some friends to get moving from where we were, but am unclear on how things run here."

When the Perchenegs settle in to row, Loukas moves to a space away where he can stretch and begins to move his arms and legs, shoulder and heads in graceful figure eight movements. Up and down, side to side he seems to roll with the sea through these exercises. After doing several rounds of these he stretches again, pulls his cow hide cloak around himself and settles down seeming to focus himself on the horizon often caressing the mistletoe wrapped amulet around his neck as he waits to return back to his oar.

"Miroslav, show our new friend the treasure map."

Balthazar waits for Miroslav to roll out the map, then says, "A while back, we attained a nifty magic item called the Deck of Many Things.  I think we might still have it?  Anyway, Miroslav gained a treasure map as his boon, and here it is."

(Copied from when we first saw it)
Miroslav unrolls the vellum carefully due to it's great age and frailty. It is a map of the eastern shore of the Euxine Sea, the area known as Colchis and the city of Dioskurias. There is an inset map that shows the city closer, or better put the ruins of a city. A tower near the docks is highlighted. There is a script at the bottom of the map in a very archaic dialect of Greek.

Balthazar adds, "That script reads 'The great library lies beneath the tower of Dioskurios. The key can be found in the possession of Phasis. Without the key the library will turn to dust.'  So we have the key, and now we are ready to roll.  I don't have a clue as to what is contained in the library.  I'm hoping spell books.  But maybe it contains answers to the  ancient mysteries of the world, like who built the Pyramids and where do the vast oceans lead."

I have traveled in an antique land
And saw two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lay, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words I read:
`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remained. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away".

And so it seems to be here, even so
With all forlorn and bare
Yet life endures, plants grow
If there be love, here may again be fair.

So, I wonder, what will it take
For this place to awake?

When Barmak finishes the last word of his song a foul gust of wind whips down the ruined street. It smells of decay and things long dead. It only lasts a moment but all can smell it. The lion and the mounts seem particularly agitated.

Re: Library

Loukas feels the foul gust and then feezes. He glances to Heinrich, "Did you just see what I saw?" Given the horrible smell and sense of the scene he's just seen his instincts shout at him to stay where he is and remain hidden; however, he knows that he cannot.

To Heinrich, "Whatever that thing is, I'm certain that it touched Barmak. We may not know what it has done, if anything to him, so you stay hidden and cover us."

Time is of the essence, so rather than await the German's response he moves with the speed of Veles to the Arab's side and while moving quickly he also stands somewhat defensively just in case, "Barmak? Are you well? I saw that thing... Did it harm you?"

With the gust the Falcon pulls back the reins commanding Storm's Wind to halt.  He looks down at the lion quizzically, feels both animals' unease.  Looking forward, he searches the ruins for anything that might have caused such a smell.  Ruefully he shakes his head.

"Of such are heroes made or forgotten."

Releasing the reins, he gives a small nudge and quick whisper, urging his horse forward with caution.  He offers a nod of reassurance to the lion as well to join him.

Barmak's behavior was somewhat odd before with his decision to march into the ghost town as if it was any other place, then he goes along singing (something he's never done before)... Well, that's a bit odder. But when he ignores Loukas and simply changes course and ditty as if the Brother of Veles hadn't addressed him? This is truly peculiar. Loukas is worried.

Putting a hand on Barmak's shoulder, "Wait, Barmak, sorry to interrupt the performance, but I asked you a question."

We don't know what it was and we have not see it since that first ill wind, but it definately touched him. He is acting no more oddlly since that contact than he was before, so I do not think it affected him. He looks towards Balthazar..."You understand my process very well. This very concept is why I locked myself away all these years ago. I do find that I am nearer to the divine more than ever but mayhap it was not worth it. I have longed for contact for many years."

He steps back and says..."Come in...I have no need for food myself but I can conjure a meal for you all. I can also grant you access to the library. I know every book here from front to back, every word. Studying these books has been one of the main focuses of my process."

And lastly...new books, why yes, new books would be most welcome!"

Re: Library

Loukas's interest in reading material is minimal. While he can read and was educated as the son of a Byzantine merchant prince, he's not a scholar or intellectual like Balthazar and Brothers of Veles are not sedentary monks. That said, a being (is he still a "Man"?) who has lived and studied and pondered things as long as Apollonius has must have some interesting insights. Still, this is all so weird... There's only one way to find out what exactly is what here.

Stepping forward with a glance at Miroslav, "Well, it has been an arduous voyage to find you, and since you're being such a generous host it would be impolite to turn down your offer of a meal."

But I'm thinking of a couple of things: Would you want others to visit? It could be you can learn what's happening down through the ages, coming ever-cloer to your goal. The other thing...you can do geometry and other mathematics. As it happens, there have been developments wich I'll be happy to share.

Apollonius:
He looks towards Balthazar..."You understand my process very well. This very concept is why I locked myself away all these years ago. I do find that I am nearer to the divine more than ever but mayhap it was not worth it. I have longed for contact for many years."

Balthazar shakes his head sadly.  "Your philosophy has led you in a totally different direction than mine.  Hedonist wizards are few, because books and study in and of themselves only inform one of the world, but are no substitute for direct experience.  Most Hedonites go thief or druid or houri <from White Dwarf> , actually.  But what few Hedonite wizards there are such as myself have vowed never to willingly join the ranks of the undead.  Death is the last great adventure, and experiencing a true death is just as important - in our opinion, of course - as anything else in life."

Balthazar enters.  "But anyway, do you have any spell books in here?  Or any magic books, like the ones you read and gain experience?  Oh also, are we allowed to take anything from your library?"

A'kos says this evenly, yet there is an edge of steel in his voice as he studies in disgust this unnatural creation called Appollonius.  He says nothing; dismounting he leads his horse to the door of the library, and unwilling to leave his companions' backs unguarded he follows the others inside.

Balthazar gets very excited at this - he was worried his request would be denied, and exclaims, "You're the ma ... " then stops himself and stammers, "... the dude.  That's very generous of you.  Now, my knowledge of geometry is not as considerable as say my knowledge of wine, and truth to be told I don't know that there have been many advances in the sciences since you walked the land freely - we went through a period that later historians will no doubt call The Dark Ages. The biggest invention was the stirrup, which paved the way for the mounted knight.  But here; I've got a weapon that hasn't been invented yet."  He shows Apollonius his longbow.

"Now, let me tell you the tale of the great Beowulf.  He's a forerunner to Miroslav over there."  Balthazar tells the long tale as best he can, and for over an hour entertains the undead librarian and the party getting every part, from the sea race to the battle with Grendel, to the battle with Grendel's mom at the cavern at the bottom of the lake, to the digressions about battles of the Danish kings, and ending with the dragon and Beowulf's funeral.

Each of these involve some creature or entity of legend as well as contemporary political matters and from them Apollonius could learn much of the modern world. Several shelves around the library begin to glow under the influence of Balthazar's spell. This makes finding the enchanted tomes much easier for those looking.

I am assuming that the group will be collecting these titles. Cuivi volunteers to sort through the titles as they are gathered. He sets them out alphabetically on a table for all to peruse.

Book of Exalted Deeds
Book of infinite spells
Book of Vile Darkness
Libram of Gainful Conjuration
Libram of Ineffable Damnation
Libram of Silver Magic
Manual of Bodily Health
Manual of Gainful Exercise
Manual of Golems
Manual pf Puissant Skill at Arms
Manual of Quickness in Action
Manual of Stealthy Pilfering
Tome of Clear Thought
Tome of Leadership and Influence
Tome of Understanding

This is really a Monty Haul sort of treasure but whatever...happy thanksgiving:)

Re: Library

Wow!  Okay, let me go through this carefully.

Book of Exalted Deeds - +1 wisdom and +1 level to good clerics, definitely for Cuivi.
Book of Infinite Spells - Anyone can benefit; Balthazar would benefit the most
Book of Vile Darkness - +1 wisdom and +1 level to evil clerics.  We don't have a use for this.
Libram of Gainful Conjuration - +1 level to neutral magic-users and illusionists.  I'm assuming Dyanna is neutral, so this is for her
Libram of Ineffable Damnation - +1 level to evil magic-users.  We don't have a use for this.
Libram of Silver Magic - +1 level to good magic-users and illusionists.  Hopefully this is for Balthazar
Manual of Bodily Health - +1 con
Manual of Gainful Exercise - +1 str
Manual of Golems - DM needs to roll to determine whch type of Manual is found, unless he wants one of each to be found ;)
Manual pf Puissant Skill at Arms - +1 level to fighters (but not rangers or paladins)
Manual of Quickness in Action - +1 dex
Manual of Stealthy Pilfering - +1 level to thieves, +5000 xp to assassins
Tome of Clear Thought - +1 int
Tome of Leadership and Influence - +1 charisma
Tome of Understanding - +1 wis

Balthazar also inquires of Apollonius if any "regular" spell books are present.

DM: Regarding the books that put you up a level and the xp we still have yet to be awarded; will the xp be awarded BEFORE or AFTER the books are read?

Balthazar also asks the party if anyone has a portable hole - I vaguely recall us getting one at one point, but maybe I'm misremembering.  Portable holes are perfect for transporting golems around.

Actually for Balthazar the question is irrelevant, because he will try to achieve level 9 by normal means first.  XP from 8 to 9 is paltry compared to how steep it gets after that.

Manual pf Puissant Skill at Arms - +1 level to fighters - unless we have to read the books while in the library, I agree w/ Balthazar here.  I'd just as soon wait to achieve next level before reading as the jump in XP is significant.

"Gah!" grouses A'kos, looking at the assembled tomes.  "Study!  'Tis no endeavor for a man of action."

Still, no fool is he.  Grabbing the first manual applicable to him he reads the back cover to see what it's about, then brings it to the counter to check out.

A'kos finds a table, sits, and looks at the cover of the book.  He stares for quite a long while before opening the cover, then stares some more.  Reaching down he flips the book upside down, or right side up as the case may be, before leaning forward to study the first page.

"Ooh, pictures," he grins enthusiastically, nodding up at Jaleh who stands nearby.  "I thought my task to read through the entire thing, but apparently their are diagrams to assist my understanding."

He winks at the woman and kicks out a stool for her use.

"Join me?" he asks.

Re: Library

Balthazar hands the Clay Golem manual to Cuivi, "Clay golems are for clerics to create; I can't use this book but you can."  He breathes a big sigh of relief that he does not have to fight over the Silver Libram with Dyanna.

With joy, he examines the Book of Infinite Spells.

22:25, Today: Balthazar the Hedonite rolled 24 using 1d8+22. pages in Book of Infinite Spells.

So the "infinite" book has 24 pages.  Trembling with awe, Balthazar opens the book to page one:

22:26, Today: Balthazar the Hedonite rolled 28 using 1d100. contents of page one.

Blank page, crap!  Probably has the copyright information.  Balthazar flips to page two:

22:28, Today: Balthazar the Hedonite rolled 85 using 1d100. contents of page two.

85 is a magic-user spell, now let's find out what level using a d12:

22:29, Today: Balthazar the Hedonite rolled 11 using 1d12. spell level.

11 means roll a d8 instead:

22:29, Today: Balthazar the Hedonite rolled 1 using 1d8. spell level, again.

Drat, a 1st level spell.  At least he can cast it 4/day because that's a class & spell level he normally has access to.

There are 40 1st level spells; the lucky spell is:

22:31, Today: Balthazar the Hedonite rolled 20 using 1d40. 1st level spell.

20 is ... magic missile.  Well getting a 5d4+5 magic missile 4/day from the book isn't so bad!  Note that each time he uses a magic missile from the book, there is a 10% chance the page turns.

Barmak turns to Apollonius. Here's how a new numbering system works...you know how an abacus works...good! You know that a column of it can have no beads moved. We can use a symbol for "no beads" like this   0   ; let's call it zero. Than ewe cna use a symbol for the number one - nine thusly....

Now that we have them, let's do some adding...since the total in this column is more than nine, we have so many tens of units in this column. That "so many" we can put above the next left column and add again....

And so it goes.

Since they had gathered together for supper after their studies Loukas had been talkative and jocular. He even brings out the helmet-shaped stringed musical from his gear that they found in Baskaran's castle. He's been seen tinkering with it from time to time since their return and it seems he has a natural knack for it. He calls it a Shlemovidnye gusli and says that this particular instrument has a name, Volsu Blüskú, Veles's Splendor. He plays a song  and sings the tale describing their recent rescue of Sir Jean from Lord Basrakan in a fine tenor voice while everyone is eating.

Afterwards as he is eating Balthazar asks his question. Suddenly he is quite quiet. When Jaleh speaks he looks curiously at the Hedonite. He ignores A'kos, because he does not know who the two men he asks about are, but when Heinrich asks his question he nods, "Our German friend makes a good point, Balthazar. How serious are you? Does this mean you have some information at least as good as that which brought us here to Apollonius's Library to begin such a quest?

"As far as vengeance against Emperor John and his pet... I do not think that anyone here has more reason than I to desire vengeance, but undertaking such a project requires something like insight into what schemes they have afoot to foil. Do you have such information?"

"What would be the point to a life devoted to experiencing all life has to offer if you could never find the things you are supposed to experience?  Friends, my Hedonism training allows me to find the path to any destination, albeit only once a week.  This would mean I would get a direction to our goal, for which we travel along for a week, then I would check in with my 'inner compass' and see if we need to change our direction, or even if we overshot our goal.  I imagine the trip would be several months in the undertaking."

Re: Library

Loukas does not have a wife and family to return to, but he does have a monastery and temple he is concerned about. Accordingly he agreed with Miroslav's thinking about returning home before making decisions about their next move. At the same time, Apollonius's offer is not only generous, it may actually be their best chance to actually achieve the Holy Grail. He knows little of the Grail, but what little he does know of it he is not certain that obtaining it is simply a matter of determining it's geographical location. From what he has heard of the Grail it is something that eludes whomever seeks it until they are prepared to receive it. His skepticism of their 'readiness' to be permitted by the Gods to obtain this holy artifact is deep, but he reminds himself that he does not know enough about it to know whether or not he's right. Maybe I'll sing another song!

As the group begins to break up to study Apollonius's rich library he remains at the table playing Volsu Blüskú and adding to the Story of the Fellowship of the Heart of Oak. Indeed, however much longer the party stays with Apollonius this is where Loukas will be found plucking at his gusli and sometimes singing, others muttering, and often writing lines about the various adventures they've had together. In between he sleeps and stretches, but otherwise does little more than work on the epic tale he promised their host.

Re: Library

Though the days of study and song, as Loukas has come to think of them, he has given a good deal of thought to Balthazar's quest for The Holy Grail. He finds himself a bit ambivalent about it. While it would certainly be a venture worthy of great songs he wonders if finding this Christian artifact would help those who did not follow the Christós. Ultimately, his desire for more experiences that will further supplement the Chronicle of the Fellowship of the Heart of Oak that he has composed over the past few days mitigates the theological and dogmatic concerns that had risen in his mind. Though, when the topic came up after he could not help but feel some skepticism.

When Miroslav speaks and Apollonius offers his information, Loukas considers, "How long ago was the Grail last found and then lost, Master? It almost sounds as if the finding and losing of this cup is as natural as the daily rise and fall of the sun, which suggests that perhaps it is not supposed to be possessed by anyone."
