The Fangs of Golarin, Talisandre, 620 NA

The light of the full silver moon lights the chill Plains of Golarin, as one by one, the gallant heroes lift and speed away from the deck of The Horn, heading east towards the great Fangs of Golarin.  Ahead, the crescent moon Jhang hangs just above the horizon like a bloody sickle, as if in portent of the battle to come.

Wraith's short airman's cloak fans out behind him as the night air careens against him.  He feels the cold air in his bones, and is thankful that he wore his gauntlets.  His stomach churns a bit as his sense of direction diminishes.  It's difficult to discern up from down in all that cold darkness.  He watches Kar subtly manipulate the currents with all the ease afforded him by nature, and he feels a pang of jealousy.  "It would be nice to fly with that sort of ease," he says, clutching the hilt of his sword with his left hand, and squinting, tries to make out the severe profile of the Fangs of Golarin, and the dangers that await them in the dark.

Jaxar leaves the deck of the Horn with surprising ease. All the decisions have been made and now it is down to the task at hand. Scanning ahead for movement on the deck of the Fate, and for sentries concealed in the rigging, his mind is at peace. There are no moral considerations to be made regarding Rajans, they are simply and obstacle to be removed.

Seeing and hearing the advice, she copies Wraith and becomes more comfortable in the air.  She moves with a little grace, and pulls herself a little higher into the sky, looking down at her companions, then looking ahead at the landscape, then shifting and looking at the tiny pinpricks of light in the sky, and the dusky outline of the moon.  She turns back over and looks down again upon the others who have taken to the sky and she smiles a small smile.

Ahead, Jaxar and J'landria's night-sensitive eyes make out the towering Fangs; less than a mile, but still some fair distance.

By the light of the silver moon, Kar's sharp Gryph eyes can make out a windship floating alongside the Fangs.  As you approach more closely, he sees some few individual figures silhouetted on the deck of the windship.

It becomes clear that coming straight on through the air is by far the fastest approach, but it will only be a matter of time before those on deck, and potentially any below, see the aerial assault incoming.

The group of you fly silently in the dark, hurtling towards the Fangs and the windship.  None on the windship appear to make note of you, as you come in, 1000 yards, 800, 500...

The windship is mostly dark, save for some few small strategically placed lanterns, dimly glowing orange-red.

All of you come close enough to see the Fangs, the windship, and the dark horde of Beastmen north of the Fangs.

Mirna begins a sweep to the south to circle the windship, avoiding the Beastmen to the north.

As you fly closer, closing to 400 yards, then 300.  In the moonlight, several figures become visible down on the deck of the windship.  Two are standing near the helm, towards aft, while several are clustered on the starboard (far) side of the ship from you.

OOC:  Note:  We are starting the counting of rounds.  It is dark, and you all will likely garner more information in the posts than your characters would know in any case, so I won't be providing any kind of map.  Also, I'm terrible a providing maps online.  :-/

OOC:  Your flight allows you to move 220 feet per round at full movement.

No one appears to have noticed your approach just yet.  At 500 feet from the windship, in the dark, individual figures are a bit hard to see.  The main group of you are drawing near the Fangs.  The windship is pointed north, and you are drawing near the port side.  Aalistair, Mirna, and Kar are the same distance as the others, but about fifty feet further south, positioned to pass a few dozen feet south of the end of the windship to circle to the other side.

OOC:  Okay!  Time for actions!  Aalistair has cast a spell; further spellcasting or firing missile weapons will require slowing to half movement (110 ft/round).  You're all still a bit far out, but I started you at 500 feet away in case anyone wanted to take a really long shot.  Probably not advisable, since it's very far and would alert them to your presence.

The main group continues on, pulls another 220 feet closer to the port side of the windship, now just 280 feet away.

Mirna continues straight on, 280 feet west and about 30 feet south of the windship.

Kar climbs higher, falling back slightly.  [OOC:  I'll need to know if Aalistair and J'landria are following Kar, Mirna, or going elsewhere entirely.]

Wraith breaks from the main group, flying slightly to the south (still much closer to the main group), while Jaxar separates from the others slightly as well.

OOC:  Round 2

Kar and those following him drop behind as they swoop upwards to gain altitude.

The others continue onwards straight towards the windship, closing the gap from 280 feet to a mere 60 feet.

You can see the two figures standing aft, at the helm; amidships, spread from the mainmast to the starboard rail are another half dozen figures; one of them towers over the others, with broad shoulders.

As Kar leads the dive down, one of the two standing at the helm points towards him, and utters an unintelligible cry.

OOC:  No one was close enough to engage in hand to hand combat during round 2, and barring any missile attacks, I'll procede with round 3, at which time you will all be close enough to close and attack if you wish.

OOC:  Round 3 results

Kar rockets down amidships; the giant crewman dodges away behind the mast, pulling out a huge axe; Kar flashes by, and his duar catches one of the crewmen and sweeps him over the far edge of the deck.

Following on either side, Mirna and Aalistair come down; Mirna catches a second crewman on the blade of her halberd and drags him over the side of the windship.  Aalistair comes on the other side squarely at another crewman, who drops to the deck under Aalistair's attack.

Jaxar and J'landria both fire upon the two crewmen standing at the helm; both arrows hit, but the soft clank of metal armor can be heard; the two look around quickly, taking cover and drawing out short bows.

Wraith closes distance as well, beginning to cast a spell.

Athellin, the two Marukans, two Arimites, and Zosha land upon the deck amidships and begin to close upon four crewmen still standing, the arimites flinging knives as they come.

OOC:  Two crewmen swept overboard; the two at the helm are now taking cover, while four remain amidships; those four are one giant, and three other crewmen -- two are somewhat shorter than the third, and appear to defer to the taller one.

"I am filled with the light of the great and mighty Aa! His power and strength fill me when I walk in the shadow of my enemies! Flee before his holy might!"

A smile curls across Wraith's face.  He focuses on the largest of the remaining pirates and casts Phaedran's Lash.  His voice rises several octaves as he musters the element of air.  An ark of lightening whips from his hand and lashes
the colossus lumbering across the deck; the bitter smell of singed ozone fulminates in its wake.

OOC:  Yes, that is what you see amidships.  There is a 'giant' -- 7 feet plus tall, and broad of build, closing with the newcomers, and targeted by Wraith's lightning bolt;  two shorter crewmen, between 5 1/2 and 6 feet tall, following the giant, and one who is 6 feet or so, rushing Aalistair.

Two other crewmen have just jumped down to the main deck from the aft castle to take cover from Jaxar and J'landria's bow fire.  They are armed with short bows.

Re: The Fangs of Golarin, Round 4, 32 Talisandre, 620 NA

OOC:  Round 4 results

The scimitar wielding warrior rushing Aalistair stops, his red eyes growing wide as he raises his blade defensively and starts to back away.  Jaxar's arrow flies wide of the same target.

Wraith's lightning bolt arcs across the intervening distance to strike the giant, playing across his body.  Great, flashing sparks fly from his plate and mail armor, and he thrashes and twitches under the assault, and as the lightning plays out, the stink of burnt cloth and flesh can be smelt, but the giant still stands.

Mirna attempts to sweep the two smaller crewmen, who have readied shields and scimitars of their own.  Each blocks her sweeping blow on their shields, deflecting the force.  They move more to the middle of the ship to engage with the remainder of the party that has landed.

J'landria moves and fires again, her arrow strikes her target in what appears to be a glancing blow.

Kar circles around and prepares for another pass.

The Arimites fling knifes at the approaching giant; Hakim's blades strike home with uncanny accuracy, one each in the giant's eyes, while one of Nohren's takes him in the throat.  The giant falls back off his feet, and crashes onto the deck, thrashing and clutching at his wounds.

Rammid swings his axe, attacking one of the two crewmen that had been flanking the giant; his axe connects with a satisfying crunch.  Athellin sweeps his scimitar blade across the same one, drawing a line of blood through the leather armor.

Re: The Fangs of Golarin, Round 5, 32 Talisandre, 620 NA

OOC:  Round 5 results (a little early, since everyone has posted)

The two crewmen amidships attack Rammid and Hakim; Rammid catches the blow on his shield, Hakim with paired daggers.  All together, Athellin's scimitar, Rammid's axe, and Mirna's halberd crash into the unfortunate, and he drops immediately to the deck, no longer quite altogether.

The other crewman is slashed by the Arimite's knives, and then skewered all the way through by Kar's duar.  His blade drops from his lifeless hands; Kar needs to stop and pull his duar out or drop it, as it is well lodged.

The other, fleeing Aalistair, is well on his way to the bow of the 'ship when Jaxar cuts him off, and blue rune-etched blade flashes out and throws sparks as it cleaves right into the crewman's black iron armor and into the flesh beneath.  Aalistair easily catches up with the preoccupied Rajan, and his glowing holy staff of Aa flashes out, catching the man in the hip, and throwing him to his knees.

As J'landria and Wraith swoop in on the two 'pirates' taking cover near the aft castle, they loose arrows at them.  The first fumbles, his bowstring frayed and snaps under the flurry of blows from J'landria's claws; as her claws scratch against his iron armor, she is unable to make purchase and hurt him.

The other arrow flies true to strike Wraith, but the blow is glancing, and the arrow snaps on his spangalor armor.  Wraith flies in with his blade out, and drives the crackling sword under the man's upraised bow arm, driving it deep before pulling it back; the man howls in pain, and his arm dangles uselessly.

The giant is still thrashing around on the deck; he seems to have extracted the knives from his eyes and neck; one crewman is engaged with both Jaxar and Aalistair, and the two helmsmen are engaged with J'landria and Wraith, respectively.

Re: The Fangs of Golarin, Round 6, 32 Talisandre, 620 NA

OOC:  Round 6 results

Aalistair easily strikes the Rajan across the back, laying him low on the deck.  Jaxar then readies his blow as he gasps for breath, trying to struggle to his hands and knees, just doing so when Kar swoops by, grabbing him and continuing over the side of far side of the windship.  His hands rapidly scramble for a purchase on Kar when he sees how high in the air they are, but he comes up empty, and Kar unceremoniously dumps him sixty feet to the ground below.

Wraith lands another solid blow on the helmsman he battles.  Awkward with his left arm dangling, the Rajan manages a blow with his scimitar, just piercing Wraith's armor on his side.  [OOC:  Wraith, 1 point damage through armor]

J'landria ducks under a wild swing from the helmsman she battles, grabs him and shoves him behind her, effectively changing positions with him.  He stumbles somewhat, but remains on his feet.

Mirna steps towards the same helmsman as he stumbles in her direction and connects with her halberd; the weapon turns in her hands as she strikes, and the blade does not bite, but glances off the Rajan's armor.

Hakim and Nohren finish off the struggling giant.

Athellin and Rammid attack the helmsman fighting Wraith; Athellin's blade misses cleanly, while Rammid's axe crashes into the Rajan, biting through his armor and staggering him after Wraith's blow.

Rioniv climbs the stairs to the aft castle.  Zosha moves towards the bow of the windship, towards where Jaxar and Aalistair are.

OOC:  The only crewmen remaining alive are the two helmsmen; one faced by Wraith, Athellin, and Rammid, the other by J'landria and Mirna.

Re: The Fangs of Golarin, Round 7, 32 Talisandre, 620 NA

OOC:  Round 7 results

Wraith's blade crackles with lightning, and it strikes true, beheading the helmsman he's battling.  He then turns and mounts the steps of the aft castle to the helm.

The other helmsman turns to face J'landria and Mirna, his scimitar held in a high guard.  Unfortunately for him, Mirna's halberd comes in low and fast, shearing right through his armor and taking off his right leg at the knee.  He falls to the deck screaming and hemorrhaging.

As Aalistair advances, one of the warriors stands firm before him, scimitar and shield at the ready, and barks something at him in an unknown tongue.  The words can't be understood, but the intent is clear, that it is a challenge.  He catches Aalistairs blow on his shield, and sweeps his scimitar back, but his blow is stopped by Aalistair's staff in return.

J'landria,  Jaxar, Kar, Rioniv, and Zosha manage to get all the mooring lines dislodged or cut.  The windship bobs slightly as it begins to float free.

The second warrior's eyes grow wide when he spots Aalistair, and he retreats back down the stairs.  The giant comes on, swinging his axe at Hakim, but it goes wide.  Hakim and Nohren counter attack with their knives; Hakim's attack goes wide; Nohren's connects, but does not penetrate the giant's armor.

Another Rajan comes up behind the giant, a blade in his hand, facing the Arimites.

Rammid and Athellin move in to assist Aalistair, watching the hatch leading belowdecks.

Wraith has suffered 1 point of damage; all the Rajan on deck originally are down or dead, the only one remaining is the helmsman who is missing a leg.

Four new Rajani joined from belowdecks; two, the giant and another, are engaged with the Arimites; one is fighter Aalistair, and one fled back belowdecks.

OOC:  Round 8 actions

The Arimites and two Rajani are engaged in combat, as is Aalistair, Athellin, Rammid, and the third Rajan.

Wraith is heading towards the helm.

The Rajan didn't have the windship exactly ready to go.  It will take about 30 total rounds of successful working in the rigging to get things going -- spread out among all of you (for example if you have 10 crew working, all successfully, you could be under way in 3 rounds).  Only one roll is necessary, which can be followed by rounds of continuing to get underway.

Jaxar and Mirna's previous experience allows them to roll at +0 (+DEX).  Otherwise, roll at Conveyance (windship), Pilot (windship) or make a DEX roll at -5.  If Wraith is giving direction from the helm, his assistance counts towards the total rounds necessary to get underway.

Clear as mud?  If so, for now, anyone trying to get underway, just roll as above.

Jaxar runs to the sails and starts to lower them, while Wraith also starts to adjust the rigging and test the wind, and J'landria and Rioniv follow his called instructions.

(Setting sail:  04/30)

Aalistair rams his staff into the abdomen of his attacker, while Mirna swipes at him with her halberd, but the blow is caught on his shield and clatters off the shoulder plate of his armor.  Rammid's axe makes solid contact, but does little damage through the armor.  Athellin sweeps his scimitar at the Rajan as well, but the counter parry knocks his blade from his hand clattering across the deck.

The Rajan cuts at Aalistair with his scimitar, but the white clad Aamanian catches the blow on his staff.

(Rajan 1 18/25)

Hakim, Nohren, and Kar all rain down blows upon the giant; while some draw blood, he fights on, apparently unfazed, and landing a solid blow on Hakim with his axe.

(Giant, 24/32 Hakim 13/26)

The other Rajan jumps on the wounded Hakim, grappling with him.

Aalistair's and Mirna's blows land, but are not powerful enough to penetrate the Rajan's armor.  Athellin retrieves his scimitar, takes a glance at the 3 others attacking the Rajan, and starts to work on the rigging.  Rammid makes solid contact with his axe.

Kar swoops back, slashing at the giant again with his claws.  The giant takes a cut at Nohren, who wraps his mace and chain around the haft of the giant's axe and rips it out of his hands.

Hakim struggles with the Rajan grappling with him; neither appears to have the upper hand.

Rioniv, J'landri, Jaxar, Wraith, and Athellin all make progress towards getting the windship moving (Jaxar is near the bow, Hakim is closer to the stern).

Aalistair's attack goes awry, and the Rajan dodges aside from Mirna's thrust to his face.  Rammid, meanwhile hits him with his axe; he again penetrates the thick armor, but just barely.  The Rajan makes another of his clumsy swings at Aalistair, missing him completely.

Hakim rolls clear of his attacker, who only dives back on him again, thrusting his hand towards the Arimite, and blood spurts from Hakim's chest as he screams.

Nohren spins his mace and chain, making solid contact with the giant, who pulls a dagger and thrusts it at the rotund Arimite.  Nohren dodges aside surprisingly deftly for his size and shape.

Kar loads his crossbow

Wraith, Jaxar, J'landria, Athellin, and Rioniv continue getting the windship ready to go.

As Wraith darts around to prep the ship for flight, he tries to keep one eye fixed on the fighting that's ensued since he commandeered the helm.  He winces when he hears Alistair's bellow, and hopes that the pilgrim has not fallen.  He turns in time to see his companion's staff clash against the armor of one of their numerous foes.

Heartened, Wraith spots J'landria darting about the deck, helping to raise sails, untie moorings, etc.  He continues to direct her and the rest of the group.  "That's it!  Raise the sails.  Quickly now!"

Aalistair's staff thuds into the Rajan's armor, while the Rajan twists and drives his shield against the staff, knocking it from Aalistair's grasp, and it falls, ringing, to the deck.  The Rajan barks something at Aalistair which is unintelligible, but clearly boastful.  He's cut short, however, by Mirna's halberd coming up under his misplaced shield and cutting a deep, bloody gouge in his side.  He gasps, staggers back and stumbles, landing squarely on his backside, a look of surprise on his face.  Rammid's axe sweeps through the recently emptied place where the Rajan was standing.  In turn the Rajan struggles back to his knees, shield held low and pressed against the large open wound in his side.

Hakim and his foe still fight entwined on the bloodied deck, knives flashing.

Kar looses a bolt from his crossbow into the giant, driving through his armor just behind his shoulder.   Nohren swings his mace and chain around, up over the giant's shield, and brains him squarely in the forehead.  The giant stumbles backwards and crashes to the deck.  He struggles to sit back up, and sits swaying and stunned.

J'landria, Jaxar, Wraith, Rioniv and Athellin continue getting the 'ship launched.  Zosha can be seen towards the bow, peering over the edge and looking below.  She appears to be fumbling with something inside her robes.

Aa does not appear to smile on Aalistair at this time, it appears, and his prayers go unanswered.

The Rajan brings his blade up just in time to partially deflect Mirna's blow, while the armor absorbs the rest of the blow.  Rammid strikes as well, his axe battering through the armor and drawing yet more blood.

The giant shakes his head, struggles to his feet while he scoops up his heavy two handed axe.  Nohren ignores the recovering giant and drives a knife into the Rajan attacking Hakim with one hand, while the knife in his other gouges into the deck.

Kar manages to partially pull the Rajan off Hakim.  He sees that the Rajan has a dagger in one hand, and his other is bloody and giving off a faint, sickly luminescence.  He sweeps this hand back at Hakim, just barely missing him.

Jaxar, J'landria, Wraith, Rioniv, and Athellin continue readying the windship.

Zosha removes something from her robes, looks carefully over the side of the windship, and then drops it.

Moments later, the windship shudders slightly as a deafening BOOM splits the night air.

Mirna's halberd and Rammid's axe drive into the blood covered Rajan each once more, striking deadly blows, Mirna's halberd into the Rajan's other side, Rammid's axe into his neck.  He drops immediately to the deck, his armor clanking.

Kar grabs the Rajan on Hakim and wrenches him clear of the Arimite.  Nohren flicks two knives at the Rajan; one draws blood, the other is batted aside.  The Rajan quickly looks around and dives down the hatchway belowdecks.

The recovering giant Nohren perhaps inadvisedly ignored takes his newly recovered war axe and delivers a mighty blow, cutting the Arimite deeply and staggering him.

Jaxar, J'landria, Wraith, Rioniv, and Athellin continue with getting the windship underway.

Multiple blows rain down on the giant's bloody form; some are blocked, some do not penetrate his armor, but a few do.  He crumples, howling, to the deck, thrashes, and then lies still.

Hakim, torn and bloody, struggles up and manages to take a few of the berries from J'landria.

Wraith utters his spell, and the winds billow the sails, lurching suddenly away and picking up speed.

It seems eerily quiet on deck as the giant's howls die along with him.

Mirna overhears and comes over to Wraith and Jaxar."This could be very bad. Jaxar, can you and J'landria and Wraith keep the ship moving, bandage our wounded, and guard the passages? Aalistair and I can head down below and at least get information about what they're doing and how many are down there. The other option is for you and I to head down and just start cleanup."

"I can keep this ship sailing, so long as the Levitational is operational," says Wraith, his casual demeanor ossifying.  He grasps the helm with both hands, and keeps eyes forward.  "Jaxar is welcome to assist me, or he can move about the deck and assist J'Landria.  I will need to stay here - in case our luck changes and I am forced to mitigate . . . disaster."

The small group gathers around amidships and before the aft castle and helm.

Mirna, Jaxar, Wraith, Aalistair, J'landria, Kar, Athellin, Rammid, Rioniv, Hakim, Nohren, and Zosha.

Zosha says, quietly, but firmly, "We are all those able to get airborne with Wraith's potion.  We'll have to rendez-vous with The Horn to pick up Kolarios, Callianos, and our new Marukan crew."

The deck has a large hatch on the middle deck, towards the aft, and a smaller hatch closer towards the bow.

Jaxar emits a low growl, "I agree with Mirna and Aalistair that the ship needs to be secured first. We don't know how many of the Death-worshippers are still on board or what they are doing, but if they destroy the levitational then all this will be for naught. We will find The Horn again. They have stake in the ship now, they will want to protect their investment."

He looks again to Mirna and the others, "We have Kar, J'landria, Hakim, and the Marukans to keep watch up here while we go below. Should we strengthen them further? Beyond that I say we secure the levitational and then clean house. Does anyone else have comment or thought?"

Fur bristling and hand on hilt, the Jaka pauses for input from the others. If no comments are forthcoming he continues, "I am willing to lead the way below decks," he meets each individuals eyes as he continues, "as my kind seem to have a knack for sniffing out trouble before actually stepping in it. I will certainly yield if someone else has a strong desire to lead the way. Are there any objections?"

It is dimly lit below decks, but Jaxar's sharp eyes can easily make out details.  Some of the layout is familiar to him, even though it seems ages since he last stood on the deck of the Fate.

A narrow, steep stairway leads down into apparently abandoned crew quarters.  Ahead is the galley and entry to the hold below, behind, the private crew and passenger cabins.

It is towards these cabins that Jaxar's sixth sense alerts him, and he hears noise there as well, from one of the heavily armored Rajan warriors standing there.

The Rajan squares his shield and raises his scimitar.

OOC:  I was a bit off in my earlier description of the windship layout.  There is a large cargo hatch to the fore of the 'ship, and a hatch towards the aft with the steep stair/ladder.  I'm assuming this last is where the PCs have gone.  Likewise, this is the hatch the Rajans came from.

The blue Osmarin blade shears right through the Rajan's armor; he's driven back a step, bleeding, by the ferocity of Jaxar's attack.

Quickly recovering, he utters some war cry and slashing with an overhand cut down on the Jaka; a cut of surprising accuracy and strength, cleaving through the leathers and leaving a deep slash down Jaxar's left shoulder and chest.

On deck, the Fangs are seen rapidly receding behind you.  All appears clear in that direction.

Jaxar drops down some and thrusts his blade at the Rajan's legs, driving it through the armor but failing to gain purchase in the flesh, while Mirna thrusts high with her halberd.  The Rajan manages to partially deflect the thrust with his scimitar, and it grates off his breastplate.  Leaning forward into the fight, he brings his shield forward, striking Jaxar a powerful blow to the head and staggering him.

Up on deck, things seem strangely quiet after the battle, and the flight from the Fangs continues.

OOC:  Go figure!  All the lousy rolls the Rajans have had all this time, and this guy pulls off a critical on Jaxar!  Sorry about that...

Changed Mirna's 'swing' into a thrust... not enough room to swing a halberd down there.  Just enough room to thrust it past Jaxar, as he was specifically making room.

Jaxar's blade thrusts up and the Rajan's shield catches it; Jaxar turns his wrist and angles the blade back towards his foe, driving it forward with a screeching of iron as it tears through the armor, just missing the flesh beneath.

He twists around, a gleam in his Rajan-red eyes as he raises his scimitar to plunge it at Jaxar.

At that moment, Mirna drives forward with a powerful two handed thrust, catching the Rajan high on his shoulder and driving him back against the wall, where the pointed tip of the halberd punctures his armor, through the flesh, and thunks solidly into the wooden wall he's been driven up against.  He struggles to free himself.

Belowdecks:

The Rajan struggles against Mirna's halberd and thrashes his shield at Jaxar.

The Jaka, his head clearing, carefully gauges his thrust, waiting for his opening.

As the shield ever so briefly swings wide, Jaxar thrusts forward, finding a seam in the armor.  With his left hand on the pommel of the sword, he drives it forward, deep into the death worshiper.

The point finds the Rajan's heart; his eyes widen and he lets out one last, almost surprised sounding, gasp, then his full dead weight rests upon Mirna and Jaxar's weapons.

Abovedecks:

Peering back towards the Fangs, J'landria's sharp eyes spy a dark winged shape, but only briefly, and it can't be determined which direction it's moving.

The windship comes around, slowly towards the west, responding sluggishly.  It's clear it's not in good shape, and the lack of experienced crew hurts as well.

"Kar," J'landria hisses.  "Kar, look there.  Wings."  Her hand raises and her finger traces where the winged shape is.

Kar raises his eyes to look for these wings.

"Wait here" he says, as he launches to a better vantage point among the ship's mast.

Re: The Fangs of Golarin,  32 Talisandre, 620 NA

Jaxar recalls the location of the levitational from his lessons with Arkannon.  That would be in the secured room at the end of the small corridor.  You would have to break into it to reach it, as it is normally kept locked.

But Jaxar's sharp ears and nose tell him no one is in the room with the levitational, not unless they are completely silent and scent-free.

But behind one of the other doors, Jaxar hears three people, and he senses danger there.  One of the scents is definitely a Rajan.

Oddly enough, that door is bolted shut from the outside.

Abovedecks:

Kar flies up onto the mast and peers back into the darkness, but there is only... darkness.

Several minutes go by.  Belowdecks, Jaxar is binding a couple nasty looking wounds.  All is quiet, except the occasional, very muffled movement from behind the bolted door.  The levitational compartment continues to be completely silent.

Abovedecks, it is difficult to see much of anything.  The Fangs continue to drop behind, growing fainter and smaller in the moonlight.  J'landria thinks she can see the shape, but only dimly, and it is getting more difficult to spot.  The sounds of battle from below have gone quiet.  Hakim and Nohren sit, nursing their wounds.

Belowdecks:

Jaxar leans in to take a look at the lock on the levitational compartment, his brow furrowed in careful consideration.  He quickly comes to the realization he has absolutely no clue how to even start opening this thing.  Almost immediately thereafter, he recognizes the make of it -- this is a lock that Zarkosh crafted.  He had a key, as did Arkannon.

Abovedecks:

J'landria spots the winged shadow somewhere behind.  It is very difficult to keep sight of, and continues to fall further behind, as do the Fangs.

Zosha comes to stand beside Wraith, puts her hand gently on his arm, and asks, "Are you confident in our route to return and rendezvous with The Horn?"

Speaking quietly, Jaxar nods his head at the analogy. "A little of both. The doorway is definitely a choke point. This is a good holding point for us if they were to try and rush us. Likewise, it slows us down if we need to get into the room quickly." Shaking his head he continues with some exasperation, "Unfortunately we have no idea what lies on the other side of that door so we don't know what the best course of action should be. Either way, I think we should have reinforcements down here before we breach the door and I think we should do this now."

Malian and Markalum will leave the room with Jaxar, appearing eager to get out.  "We are not very fit, currently, but we can help out if it's urgent," Markalum says.

Once they are away, Malian will continue, "They frequently took him from the room.  Often we would hear screaming."  She exchanges a quick glance with Markalum, and says quietly, "We also saw when they stripped him of his fetish mask to torment him.  That is a deeply personal thing for the Djaffir."  She buries her face in her hands, you see tears run from beneath her fingers, "His screams were terrible."

Wraith spins and, baring his teeth, says,  "Watch yourself, Kar.  I fear that I might know what approaches."  The sailor begins to search his mind for an appropriate spell.  He watches the dark form grow larger, and an incantation begins to swirl from his lips.  Twisting his left hand, he focuses his attention on his palm, where a swirl of ozone and lightening begins to germinate.

He howls as a torrent of vapor slithers around his fist.  He hurls torrent of primal energy towards the oncoming attacker.  Three blades of roiling lightening and cloud cleave through the void and strike at the fell shape.

"Keep safe," she tells Mirna as she dashes up the stairs.  When she reaches the deck she takes in the scene before her and growls.

On Deck:

The beast thrusts the spear at Rammid, and slashes at him with his sword, both connecting, the spear punching right through the Marukan's mail and drawing a gush of blood.

Rammid swings back, a remarkably accurate blow, deftly avoiding the shield of the enemy, yet by some bizarre trick of the eye, it appears to not make contact.

Belowdecks:

Abn Quam simply leans against the wall, breathing heavily.  All else is quiet.

On Deck:

... and a backlash of lightning goes wild in Wraith's hands.  There is a loud pop and a thump of air thrown by the misfire, and Wraith is thrown backwards to land with a heavy thud on the deck, his sword clattering beside him.

The white-clad Aamanian rushes in to the fray, giving a mighty swing of his staff, but the blow is barely swept clear by the parry of the creature's sword.

J'landria and Jaxar are able to get a bead on the creature with her bow; a shot is possible, but perhaps risky given the close proximity of compatriots in melee with it.

Kar comes rocketing out of the sky, but is seen by the beast.  It counters his charge with a surprisingly swift and strong sweep of its spear, sending Kar's duar flying from his grasp.

It then spins the spear back around and thrusts it again into Rammid before he can parry.  His legs buckle and it flicks the spear to the side sending him stumbling and dropping to the deck.  With its sword it slashes at Aalistair, a swift, powerful strike hacking right through his armor and drawing blood.

On Deck:

J'landria's arrow shoots forward, narrowly missing the beast, Wraith, and Aalistair.  Jaxar's arrow seems dead on, but seems to miss; oddly enough, it appears to pass through the creature as though it was made of nothing more than shadow itself.  J'landria spots the dim red lights the Rajans had the ship lit with, spaced around the deck.

Wraith leaps back to his feet, and takes a vicious cut, laying into the midsection eliciting a howl of pain, and a splash of inky blackness that billows out and hangs in the air.

Kar swoops back and comes crashing back at the beast from directly above; although his aim seems true, he thuds heavily to the deck, seeming to partially pass through the beast much like Jaxar's arrow.

The beast slashes at Aalistair, connecting with its sword, and makes a powerful thrust at Wraith with its spear, driving it into his thigh.

Athellin steps up beside Jaxar, saying to him, "You won't like this, but it has to be done."  He is shuffling through his Zodar deck, and Jaxar's danger sense goes wild as magical energies surge up, and flow over the Jaka, closing and healing his wounds.

As the search begins, to all appearances, the Rajans were traveling lightly, as not a lot of their gear appears to be on board.  The captain's cabin is sizable, and directly accessible from the deck, being under the helm at the aftcastle.  Searching here turns up a few unsettling items one might expect from a Rajan death priest.

OOC:  Who is searching, and who is sailing?  A reasonably thorough search of the windship would take about an hour.  Assuming some decent sailing, it will take about 15 minutes to make rendezvous with The Horn.  Whoever is doing either, please make the rolls associated (pilot, conveyance (windship), or PER).

The captains quarters, in the aft of the windship, prove to have little of interest, aside from a locked iron chest without a key.  There are a number of parchment documents, all in Rajani.  From there, it descends to a number of disturbing fetishes and grisly totems.

Moving to the fo'c'sle, it appears one of these cabins here was used for some storage.  There are what appear to be belongings to some Djaffir, including three fetish masks.

Coming out of the fore cabins, the sharp eyes of Jaxar and J'landria spot what Kar has just seen ahead in the silver moonlight:  the distant shape of The Horn.

We know two Rajans escaped below but can only account for one. Our search of the ship has not uncovered any other Rajan, but we have found a captive Djaffir. Aalistair had a momentary vision indicating our Djaffir passenger may be a Rajan in disguise. And we have come across three Djaffir fetish masks that smell faintly of Djaffir but more strongly of Rajan stink. Further, J'landria has indicated that one of the masks smells strongly of our passenger and very faintly of another Djaffir. Has anyone here ever heard of Djaffir sharing their masks?" While waiting for a response the Jaka adds, "While I do not want to accuse or offend an innocent man, all evidence points to him being a Rajan. Can anyone think of a way to verify this without potentially insulting an innocent bystander if my assumption is wrong? We also have several documents, if anyone can read Rajanni."

Those searching belowdecks first come to the general quarters of the crew.  There is quite a lot to go through, and all of it is largely uninteresting things like spare black cloaks, an extra dagger left behind, a boot in need of repair.  During this time, the windships are docking together.

Forward of the crew quarters is the galley and fore cabins.  Aft of the crew quarters are the aft cabins and levitational.

Nothing living has been discovered beyond the two Cymrilian crew and the Djaffa, still locked in one of the aft cabins.  The next deck down is the hold, not explored yet.

As the Marukans tramp over the plank and board the Wind of Fate, the others descend into the hold.  Rather than being closed and stuffy, there is movement in the air, and the lower hatch is open.

Mostly in the hold are foodstuffs and old storage, but there also appear to be several crates of spears still in the hold.

Out the open hatch, the rigging and a trailing rope can be seen.

Kolarios hurriedly stepped over the gangplank with some haste and found himself on the deck of the Fate absentmindedly checking his belt to ensure that nothing had fallen off. He looked around the deck and smiled, fists on his hips, breathing in. ”The sweet smell of victory! I applaud you all, this appears to have been a hard-won prize. Well, obviously, it was… I was not there to accompany you. But, may I say with all honesty, that you seem to have done a decent job without me.” He looked up at the rigging and cocked his head. ”Do you know if anyone had opportune chance to swing from that there rope into a gaggle of bloodthirsty-fiends? It’s sort of my signature move and I’d hate to have to duel with someone for appropriating it without knowledge of my prior ownershipness.”

He looked around noticing that everyone seemed frightfully busy, banging around in the hold, or opening doors and such. He tugged at the sleeve of the one of the Marukans. ”Man, I say, man, did someone lose a monocle?” The brush-off received caused a bit of a stir with the Zandir who held his nose at the man’s back and hastily brushed his sleeve off, checking for a stain.

He moved further onto the deck and towards the young Jaka. Young? Now why do I think that, her ears seem to be as tall as anyone elses… far larger than mine own, even. He shook off his irritating internal monologue and focused on the task at hand. ”Fine work here, my lady.” He bowed at the waist again. ”I was informed of the precipitousness of the struggle with which possession of this vessel was appropriated to our merry crew. It would seem that some binding of wounds and the like may be in order and I, unsurprisingly, have some skill in that respect.” He coughed and leaned in. ”If there’s a scholarly sort of medicinal expertise aboard, I would certes bow out in favor of their ministrations but, needs must, I can assist.”

"There are a... few other healers here, but if you... know your way around bandages," she pauses then and looks around, trying to spot those who need the most attention.  "Hakim is injured, Wraith, and Aalistair too.  Although I think that Aalistair would turn down... anyone if they tried to aid him."  She lifts her shoulders in a small shrug, the normal rumbling growl rolling through her speech.  Her lips quirk into a brief smile.  "As for the rope... I think none of us... er, swung on it yet.  If you have a good hand... I know that help is needed with the," she pauses again, but her expression speaks of searching for words.  "Sails? Rigging?  We experienced some issues."

She looks at him for a moment, then one ear turns back and her posture straightens some.  The look in her eyes is almost eager.  "Unless of course, you are familiar with Djaffir... Then I could point you at a different task."

In the quiet of indecision that follows, after a wait of several minutes that seems to stretch out for days, the little Kasmiran moves to the helm, and speaks.

"Wraith, I have heard no other suggestions, and Kar's reasoning is sound.  Take us north, out of reach of any pursuers we might have, to his homeland.  That will have the added benefit of bringing us in a completly different direction from the Horn."

The Wind of Fate swings about, bringing her bow around to the north.

While obviously not in prime condition, the Fate is still a fast, sturdy windship, and begins to make good progress skimming across the plains and into the northlands.

J'landria is not sure, but she thinks she may see something, or somethings, moving on the ground back in the direction of the Fangs.

Looking at J'landria, Jaxar begins scratching his muzzle in earnest. "I think I might have an idea." Taking one of the two masks that did not have the correct scent(s) he suddenly grins, "I'll need some back-up in case our friend decides to try anything funny, but go along with whatever I say. The Djaffa takes the mask from Mirna, nods his thanks to her while also rasping out the word.  Once she closes the door, she can hear him moving about for a few minutes within the cabin before he settles quietly.

Aalistair finds the crew quarters at the opening of the hallway, and is able to find a bunk, a hammock actually, which though somewhat strange and unsettling at first, the gentle swaying an motion of the windship soothes him to sleep, after an exhausting day and night in the service of Aa.

Likewise, though uncomfortable, Mirna is able to doze off eventually, her body tired with the rigors of travel and combat.

Jaxar returns abovedecks.

OoC:  I will close this thread, but open another for the crew quarters/main deck of the windship.
