Dhar, Great Aerie of the Gryphs

A distant and isolated people, the Gryphs of Tamaranth nevertheless conduct some trade with other peoples of faraway lands.

The great span oaks of Tamaranth hold the aeries of this winged folk, the largest being at Dhar.  Because this place is across the Plains of Golarin, populated by the hostile tribes of the Beastmen, visitors from other lands are few, and many of those are the windships able to fly high above the wild lands.

While not possessing windship arcanology of their own, the Gryphs easily make their aeries accessible , the great branches of the span oaks acting as windship docks on their own.

Re: Dhar, Great Aerie of the Gryphs

Coming out on deck as the ship docks, Aalistair has obviously spent the last day of the journey cleaning his wide-brimmed hat and his cloak of all the accumulated road-dust and mended the various tears and cuts. Gleaming white (if a bit pale and thread-bare), he strides across the deck to the edge of the craft to see what he can from this new vantage point.

J'landria walks up beside Aalistair and tips her head slightly, then moves to look down toward the earthen floor.  With a twitch of her long tail, she lifts her head and looks into the sky and at the rest of Kar's people, the Gryphs.  Her rough pink tongue darts out, licking her lips and the set of her ears denotes some nervousness on her part.  That is gone quickly however when she straightens and pulls her shoulders back.  Her green eyes follow the flight of those around her.

"Welcome to Dhar. I may not be a native, but I might be able to point you in the right direction, if I knew what you were searching for...?"

They would not accept your aid, were it offered, because they have already let down their own. I should say that the closest need exists either in the ship behind you or down on the ground below, not in the trees before.
Those who feel they are not worthy, or cannot contribute, are welcome to leave."

"I need to ask about... a youngling who may have passed.  Either in the company of someone else... or on his own," she says turning her gaze away from the trees and their inhabitants.  Her usual growl is a bit more pronounced than normal and she has an almost agitated air about her.  "Who would that be, do you know?"

She looks out again and takes a deep breath, one hand strays to the hilt of her sword at her hip and she grips the leather tight for a brief moment before taking another deep breath and letting her body relax some.

Hree regards you with a cocked head and a curious eye.  "There is water available to bathe; if you need the comfort of warm water, we had best take you to the buildings below.  Also, it is customary for our people to feast on a fresh kill directly, and only dry and preserve the remains afterward.  If you wish your portion cooked, no offense will be taken, but it would be best if I could relay that before the feast."

She looks around, noting Gryphs flying to and fro.  "It will not be long, it would be best not to be late."

Warm water sounds good, in temperatures just above freezing.  It is a chill day, for all but perhaps the Gryphs in their warm plumage, and the two Jaka with their fur.

All who would like can quickly get cleaned up [those purchasing rooms, 2gl each] and back off to the feast.

The feast is held high up in the great limbs of a span oak.  In a central area, near the trunk, several elders portion out the kill.  It is a bit confusing (to all but Kar), but it appears that portions are handed out according to some kind of ranking.  The hunters capturing the kills are awarded first, followed by the elders themselves, who retire after receiving their portions.  Then come a number of others, each seeming to know their time and place.  When it is your turn to go, you are ushered up by Hree, and you find both the fresh kill, and portions which have been cooked to various degrees.  There are also some few nuts and berries, though these are by far outnumbered by the portions of fresh meat.

Aalistair will take some of the cooked meat, lay a small bit of the raw over the top of it, as well as take some of the nuts and berries.

Returning back to a seat, he will inquire of Hree and Kar, "the elders do not eat with you? And the first to eat, the hunters, do they always succeed? Is it a matter of skill or of luck?"

"Only the successful hunters eat first. The Elders eat with us, and then go off to discuss matters of clan and community importance, such as the success of the hunters, and how that affects future plans and prospects, as well as other matters of security and potential pairings. If you look, you can make out the two groups of young adults...men in one, girls in the other. Close enough to be seen, but not mingling as groups. This is because the boys must prove themselves worthy not only to the girl and her parents, but to the clan elders as well. One of the best ways to do that...provide for the clan feasts. If you can assist in providing for the clan, then you should be able to provide for a family."
As Kar is explaining this, it becomes apparent that the "young adult" males appear to be about his age, some a little younger, not many older.

Aalistair inclines his head in response. "Peace." He pops another berry into his mouth and chews slowly. "The Rajani and the Beastmen were working in concert, you see. They had stolen the craft we arrived on, and were no doubt up to more villainy. We arrived with, apparently, the lone survivor of a group of Djaffir whom had likewise been attacked. One among us seeks a youth of her people as well." He moves a bit of the meat around on his plate. "After we re-took the windship, we needed somewhere to go to affect repairs, to get our bearings. Kar there, I believe, suggested this place. It was close, as things go, to the Fangs of Golarin, a place of safety and peace, and we had hoped the distance would allow us to evade pursuit."

"Indeed," he follows, with a small nod, "the Beastmen of the Plains know better than to approach too closely here.  We drive them and kill them like the vermin they are.  They sometimes approach anyways; the wood itself is a draw for them, as it can be scarce out on the grasslands."

Kar looks at the gryph remaining in the room, and decides that someone should try a little harder...realizing that would only be himself...
"Yes, a band of Gryph would not need the windship. Neither did this motley crew, for a short time. Long enough to reclaim the ship, taken while our backs were turned, from another group of land-devils in league with the beasts collecting outside these grand Oaks. A bold move born of determination almost ended before it began, as legs used to the immobile earth took flight for the first time. Had it not been for an improptu lesson in basic flight practices, some would surely have dropped to the ground short of their targets."

Pausing for effect, Kar looks around to see if anyone outside his group has taken notice.

"As night drew to a close, this rag-tag crew approached their ship, gliding on the winds as easiliy as if they were born to it. Surrounding the ship as best they could, they struck as dawn broke.
The first of the devils who dropped to the ground never knew what hit them.
All would not be so easy. As they cleared the decks, some were more comfortable regaining their feet, and took the fight to the enemy face to face.

Then he appeared.
A giant to big to be swept off like the rest of the offal on-board.
But did this sight frighten our heros? Not in the least.
Working together two of our bravest allies, Marukan brothers out to prove their own worth to themselves and the world, were instrumental in bringing this lumbering tower of a man to his knees."

"As it approached the deck intent on the one who had fired upon it, our helmsman and functioning first-mate Wraith, quickly found himself airborn once again. Fate would not leave him to fall, however, as the remainder of the draught responsible for their aerial boarding stayed with him. We returned to the ship to find each of our comrades in arms preparing for their own chance against this beast. Wraith readied a blast to remove it from our decks once more, only to be thrown back by his own efforts. The Jaka prepared to charge, after I had tried to distract it again.
Weary from the day's exertions, fearing for the safety of not himself, Aalistair of the light beat us all to our target.
He challenged that demon with a curse calling upon a strength from within and without. Beset by the resulting blast of blinding light, The devil had no chance. The rest of us stood down as it whimpered, withering on the deck. Within moments, it was no more. The only evidence of it's existence an exhausted, panting Aamanian, and a stone on the floor."

Pausing, bringing his half-outstretched wings back to his body, Kar looks around the assembled audience and adresses them directly

"This is why, when seeking a place of rest, and possible repairs, I suggested the welcoming branches of the Oaks. Not because I come to beg for your assistance, but to stand as a warning to those who would think that events outside these woods will never affect those who dwell within. These enemies care not at all for honor. They care even less for family. But if you will not listen to me, then allow me to introduce one who has even more authority on that score. A man we found beaten in the hold of the ship."

*He circles to the Djaffir*

"A man who has had strangers return the masks of his wife...his children. He will not beg for pity, but I must beg that we do not let their deaths be in vain. Please, do not let his story become your story just because it happened outside the shadows of the Oaks."

*And with that, it becomes obvious that the story is over, as Kar looks to the Djaffir and extends an arm in friendship*

Once the work is set out, the three days pass quickly.

Wraith reviews the needs for the Wind of Fate, and wood is plentiful, though some of the oak is heavier than you'd prefer to work with.

Jaxar proves adept at carving, and shadows Wraith in learning the ins and outs of the windship.

The Marukans are unfamiliar with the windships, or even ships in general, but are hard working.

Once the time has passed, the windship is serviceable and ready to fly reliably once again.

OoC:  There will be a few notes and events before the departure, but largely we're going to fast forward to that point.

Re: Dhar, Great Aerie of the Gryphs

In reply to GM (msg #104):

While the rest of the crew is busy, Wraith slowly inspects the ship, and is quite pleased with the quality and quantity of work that his been accomplished during the last three days.  The callouses on his hands certify that he, too, did his share of the heavy-lifting.  "She could still use a going-over by Sturgis, but that will have to wait," says Wraith.  "She's sky-worthy - that much I know."

"Aye, sky-worthy. But are we," asks Aalistair, walking across the deck with all the solid insecurity of a toddler taking his first steps. "Where are we planning to be off to when we're able? Back to Deadwood, I assume? I confess I'd like the chance to stop over for at least a night there, if not more."

J'landria finds them talking and she approaches.

"I ask a... selfish favor," she begins, her green eyes looking between the men.  "That we allow... Ahben back on.  He might have seen the... child that I seek."

She says nothing else, just looks at them, waiting for their reply.

"He is welcome to board, so long as the rest of you is convinced that is as he appears.  I don't see how he can be anything else, but there is subtle magic in this world, and I have but inkling of it."  Wraith smiles again and draws his broad collar across his neck.  "I for one am happy to help you locate your missing cub, J'landria.  Tell me about this missing babe.  How did it happen?  I presume that the cub was stolen at some juncture, no?"  He stretches his lithe arms along the rail of the deck and basks in the jagged rays of light that have found their way through the canopy of branches that surrounds them.

Re: Dhar, Great Aerie of the Gryphs

She stares at Wraith, her green eyes wide but calculating.  After the span of a few dozen heartbeats she nods.

"My father discovered a small... disturbance.  None of the other elders or trackers thought it was of any consequence however.  My father thinks he was stolen, wooed away from the safety of our people, then captured and dragged away for study," she says.  Her expression darkens and the somewhat startled and surprised look that is generally on her face is replaced with the look of someone much older and wiser than her years.  "There are stories among the... keepers... of my people that tell of wizards taking youth and studying them.  Torturing them with both magical and non magical means."  She takes a deep breath, but all the while a quiet and low rumble echoes in her throat and her tail moves slowly side to side.  "It is assumed that they," her jaw closes and clenches for a moment.  She seems torn as to how much to say to this outsider.  "They seek a way to understand some of our... abilities.  Possibly to harness them for their own use, or to prevent us from using the abilities to stop them from whatever it is they're seeking to do."
She stares at Wraith for what feels like a long while.
"I can't explain more yet.  I don't know you, don't know that I can trust you with... secrets that my people have kept for hundreds of years."

"I am concerned about what the Rajani may have done to Abn Quam. Those among us with greater senses than mine have felt that he is not what he says he is. I am willing to take him back aboard, but there is a risk. We don't know exactly who - what - we are taking aboard."

J'landria nods at the words of Mirna.
"I am one of those who don't... trust him," she replies simply.  "Yet, I also wonder if we were all on edge that night... looking for an enemy and finding someone to fill... that role."
She shrugs and looks up as a Gryph passes far overhead.  Her green eyes blinking and she smiles.

"Being in the trees is nice.  I will miss it."

"Our... or your," he spreads his hands briefly towards the owners of the Fate, "windship, is responsible for bringing him here.  I do think we could watch him until we get to Deadwood at least, and that at least would be a kindness, that we would not be abandoning him here with all the Beastmen of Golarin between himself and his homeland?"

"Aye," Aalistair nods. "It is the best we can do." He looks to the others closest to him. "Too, we can keep an eye upon him on the journey ourselves. Deadwood should not be more than a day away in this windship, yes? We journeyed here in about as much time did we not?"

The Djaffir trader, looking much better with a change of clothes and a few days rest, joins the rest of you in the trees.

"If your offer still stands, I would accompany you.  I stand little chance of gaining my vengeance on foot with all the lands of the Beastmen between myself and my enemies.  All I would ask is the recovery of my personal gear, and that I be allowed the freedom to come and go from my bunk at will.  I am willing to work my passage as well."

In reply to Abn Quam (msg #116):

"It is meet with me that you should come with us. I am not sure what gear is yours, but your own mask and those of your kinsmen should be in your care." There is a bit of disgust evident upon his face as he discusses these ill-omened trinkets. "I am not the captain of this vessel nor the leader of this expedition. These pilgrims are not my charge. That said, we can see you back to Deadwood as safely as we may, but from there I cannot say."

J'landria shrugs.
"I have no problem with any of it," she says.  "Mind, I still don't... know why they allowed me on the ship."
She smiles then, a toothy and predatory grin.

After seeing Abn's approach and the general response from the rest of the crew, Kar only nods once before taking to the air to pass the space between the honor guards double checking moorings and such as the ship prepares for departure.
