The Dragon King (main)

The heroes journeyed north and west, starting along the shore, but then cutting through the open sea for a shorter journey. It took three days for them to arrive in Palanthus. It was called the Jewel of Solamnia and there was a friendly rivalry between it and Kalaman. The "civilized" city in the west and the "country bumpkins" of the east.

Though how a person from Kalaman, the second largest city in Solamnia, could be called a country bumpkin even by those that came from smaller settlements in the heart of Solamnia was unclear for those from the Pearl of the East.

Palanthas was a sight to see worthy of being likened to a jewel, but pearls always beat jewels. The Tower of High Sorcery was clearly seen from the harbor even at early evening when the heroes arrived. It was a spire that towered over everything else in the city. Once a dark shard of Evil, but now in the hands of the Master of Past and Present whom they were visiting.

The city of Palanthus was designed in circles, with the Grand Palace almost at the center, just a few blocks from the tower.

As they walked off the gangway from the ship that brought them to Palanathus, Roisin took the time to stop and breathe in. Every city smelled different, and ignoring the smell of fish and the sea, she could smell the essence of Palanthas. She ignored Ochre as he sat at the edge of the dock deciding on whether or not the water was worth risking for a fish.

It was only after a few moments she turned to the others. "Well, we have much to do and little time with which to do it. Do either of you have plans? Or should we head directly to the Tower of High Sorcery? Hopefully we shall be welcomed. One might dread to consider what might be ahead should we be unwelcome."

Roisin beckoned to Utrecht to join her. It was strange, she was sure the lumbering construct almost has a personality in the time they'd known him. A gentle giant. She smiled as he rose from the hold. "I know the journey wasn't pleasant Utrecht, but we're here finally."

D'aden emerged from below decks, having waited till the last minute to resume his traveling attire. He calls back to the captain and crew, "it was good crewing for ya, cap'n. I'd almost lost my sea legs, afore this. My thanks to you all."
He makes his way to the dock with a little extra spring in his step. On his way past the construct, he responds to Roisin's statement, "ya should've spent more time on deck. The air at sea is cleaner than any you'll find ashore. It always does me good to sail a bit."
Sobering, he nods, "we probably should head to the tower right off. I would imagine they would wish to hear of our previous excursion, and wouldn't be surprised if they didn't send their own to examine the place."
D'aden turns towards the tower, and stares at it, somehow lost in the view.

Roisin raised an eyebrow "They wouldn't. It's in Master Caladan's demesne...and now my responsibility, but it is true to say that the Tower is where I have much work to do. Assuming I'm allowed entry. Still, I'd welcome a teacher from the Tower, though ultimately they may be working for the Tower rather than the Lyceum."

D'aden looks at Roisin with a tight-lipped smile. "I'm sure I wouldn't know about it, but I suspect there would be some in the tower that would be happy to assume that responsibility for you."
Shaking his head, as if to clear it of the view of the tower, he continues, "for some people, wealth is not measured in coin but in control. Like a bull that won't rest till he's in the biggest pasture, they strive to bring as much as possible under their power."

Roisin laughed "You're a man with many hidden depths, my friend." she nodded subtly "but yes, there's always risk. They would never move openly. That I am appointed mistress of the lyceum will not change. However, my staff that I am to appoint? Yes, there is where they may make their moves. I'm sure one will be forced on me, but the others? I must make them compete so that the only true winners will be those who go to the lyceum to learn."
