What's in your head, zombie?

Some mood music

Danny Boy:

A dark figure shuffled underneath him Danny glanced down, gripping the scythe, ready to strike...but what he saw, a shambling thing clad in a black army uniform, was about the last thing he expected to see...but it was clad in a uniform that wasn't gray, and, horribly, he thought he recognized the man it used to be.

All logic fled from him. What was left was the training. The urge to fight, past all reason and emotion. He had one ally now, and that would make all the difference in the world as far as he was concerned.

A battle cry sprang from his lips as he leaped out of the rafters and charged Gus Shaw. "For Missouriiiiii!"

He sliced downward with the scythe, tearing through the man's shirt, leaving a trail of red down his chest.

[[OOC: Danny Boy rolled 00 using d8-2,d6-2, rerolling max with rolls of 2,2. Fear!

Danny Boy rolled 1 using 1d20 with rolls of 1. Fright! That's an Adrenaline surge, which grants him a +2 to Trait rolls and Damage. Lucky stiff.

So he's going to charge Gus, as he's not thinking too clearly at the moment.

Danny boy leaps down and Wild Attacks Gus. (-2 darkness, +2 Wild Attack, +2 adrenaline surge): Danny Boy rolled 3,7 using d6+2,d6+2 with rolls of 1,5. Fighting!

Damage: +2 Wild Attack, +2 Adrenaline Surge: Danny Boy rolled 7 using 2d6+4 with rolls of 1,2. Gus is Shaken.

Danny Boy drew the single card: 10H]]

Private John Brown:

Ah, the sound of War and battle. How he had missed those things these long months since the war had halted (it wasn't over. It would never be over, if he had any say in it). And look! It was Danny Boy! Even better.

The skeletal thing lurched out of the barn, following his compatriot. He rushed towards the red-faced man, and saw something gratifying in the cattlehand's eyes.

"Glory, glory hallelujah! Glory, glory hallelujah! Glory, glory hallelujah!" the deadman cried as he swung his saber at Gus, who managed to turn it aside with his bowie knife but only just.

Then the deadman spotted something. A glow. A lantern. And, bearing it, a man, clad in the hateful colors of the Rebs. He aimed his colt at the advancing Charging Bear.

"His soul goes marching ooooon!" the dead man shouted as he pulled the trigger. The bullet flies true...

[[OOC: John Brown moves into view, and he's a hideous sight for Gus to behold. Gus makes a fear check (-4 for the fear level, +2 grit): Gus Shaw rolled 3,3 using d6-2,d6-2 with rolls of 5,5. Well, that sucks to be Gus.

Rolling on the fright table: Gus Shaw rolled 20 using 1d20 with rolls of 20. fright roll. Mark of Fear! Gus is Shaken, and also will suffer some cosmetic alteration that will lower his Charisma by 1. Since Gus is shaken by a non-damage source, that doesn't do anything extra to him.

John Brown move to flank and uses his Two-Fisted edge to make an attack against Gus and against Charging Bear. Charging Bear is still out of range

Attack Against Gus (Saber, -2 darkness) Private John Brown rolled 0, 4 using d8-2,d6-2 with rolls of 2,6. Fighting! That misses Gus's Parry of 6.

Attack Against Charging Bear (Colt Dragoon, -2 Distance) Private John Brown rolled 3,4 using d8-2,d6-2 with rolls of 5,6. Shooting! That's a hit.

Private John Brown rolled 8 using 2d6+1 with rolls of 5,2. Damage. Charging Bear is Shaken again.

Private John Brown drew the single card: JH]]

Gus Shaw:

Danny Boy's charge was unexpected, but the thing behind him?

That was just unnatural! Dead men should not walk!

The sight of the black-clad soldier stirred some primal revulsion in Gus, who had seen many terrible things during his time in the Rail Wars. All he knew was that he had to get away, and warn people!

He ran, dodging swings from scythe and saber. He ran towards the light, hoping, praying that it was someone friendly who wouldn't mind the honest mistake of being fired at before. "Oh god!" He cried as he ran. "He'll kill us all! Run! RUUUUUN!"

[[OOC: Gus spends a chip to become unshaken, and takes a Total Defense action while attempting to withdraw from combat (he wants none of this...he's overconfident, but not with 2-on-one odds against some walking dead man after failing a Guts check).

The Total Defense improves his Parry to 8 until his next action.

Danny Boy and John Brown get free attacks.

Danny Boy has a -2 penalty from darkness, and his bonuses are all used up. Danny Boy rolled 4,3 using d6-2,d6-2 with rolls of 6,5. Fighting!

John Brown also has penalties from the darkness...being undead doesn't mean he can automatically see in the dark. Private John Brown rolled 1,2 using d8-2,d6-2 with rolls of 3,4. Fighting!

Gus Shaw drew the single card: 2S]]

It is Charging Bear next...You can see figures moving, but you won't need to make a fear check until you get close enough to actually see the black-clad soldier in full.

Re: What's in your head, zombie?

As Charging Bear moves towards the edge of the barn, his lantern illuminates a grisly sight.

One man is a normal person, stripped to the waist but wearing blue army pants. He doesn't look older than 17, but he clutches a scythe dripping blood with grim determination and obvious skill.

The other man strides purposely through the darkness. Clad in a tattered black army uniform, he has clearly spent some time exposed to the elements and feasted on by wildlife. The flesh from his face has been torn away, leaving only a leering skull behind.

"He's come to slaughter Rebs for the glory of the North." He sings in a gravelly whisper. "He's come to slaughter Rebs for the Glory of the north. He's come to slaughter Rebs for the glory of the North. His soul goes marching on!"

Augustus felt more secure now, with his sonic weapon in hand and wound up. Standing again, he leans against the wall. More secure does not mean any less concerned over gunfire. More gunfire seems to be joining in now, along with very eerie singing and screaming. The fact that the seemingly ough Mr. Shaw is yelling to "run" is not helping these matters at all.

"Alouette?!,"whispers the scientist as loud/quiet as he can, "I think Mr. Shaw is trying to trick us. Why would he be running, if he's a murderous scalper or what have you? He might have the boy allready! That madman would kill him for sure!"

Spirits protect him.

The clank's head snapped round at the first appearance of the dead man, long before he stepped into the light. "He is afraid of the damned Yankee," it states, putting its plate down - instinct or obliviousness leads it to retain the cutlery - and loping off towards the light.

Charging Bear may well find his problems abruptly taken down to one skinny boy with a scythe in a golden blur and a clang of sabre on metal.

That would be a fail... burning my last FC to add a d6 to that.
09:18, Today: Charging Bear rolled 5 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5. Blue Chip.
Total Guts check == 6!

The dead man stops Charging Bear in his tracks, for an instant, while he had seen dead men walk before, nothing could prepare one for such a horror of one being obviously eaten and returned from beyond the grave. He steels himself against the terror that tries to consume him, "Time for you to sleep again" he says and closes the distance between himself and Private John Brown. Alouette would be helping, if it hadn't suddenly jerked sideways with a surfboom of static and fallen over whilst seeking to grab the dead man's throat.

The sonics passing over charged particles in the aether briefly converts some of the energy to light; in the moment Alouette goes down, struck, there's an impression of lines in the air all around, the shafts of huge wingfeathers flared instinctively for balance. The illusion is brief as the sight of a smoke-curl caught in a photographer's flash, though Augustus might feel he was looked at by something very surprised indeed.

"...unknown error..." Alouette murmurs at ankle level "...attempting transcription...error;no plate......"

Private John Brown:

The skeletal soldier takes the tomahawk to the guts with no apparent discomfort to speak of. It throws off the twitching, spastic bulk of Alouette and lays into the native son, spearing him with its rusty saber and winging him with a shot from it's Colt Dragoon.

And all the while, the thing keeps singing.

"He's gone to be a soldier in the army of the Damned.
He's gone to be a soldier in the army of the Damned.
He's gone to be a soldier in the army of the Damned.
His soul goes marching on!"

[[OOC: Charging Bear's attack dealt 1 wound and made John Brown Shaken. John Brown spends a white chip from the GM's stash to make a soak attempt. Private John Brown rolled 4,3 using d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,3. soak attempt. The undead soaks the wound.

John Brown considers attacking Alouette, but his priority is what he sees as a Confederate soldier, so he focuses all his ire there. He goes stabby-shooty at Charging Bear.

Stabby with saber - No penalties or bonuses, but CB is at -2 parry. Private John Brown rolled 5,2 using d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5,2. Fighting! That's a hit. Private John Brown rolled 5 using 2d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,1. Damage. That makes Charging Bear Shaken.

Shooty with colt dragoon - +2 bonus from Marksman, but firing into melee (but CB has a -2 parry, so the TN remains 4). Private John Brown rolled 3,5 using d8+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 1,3. Shooting! That's another hit. Private John Brown rolled 4 using 2d6+1, rerolling max with rolls of 1,2. Damage. Not enough to break the native son's Toughness.

Charging Bear is Shaken.

Private John Brown drew the single card: KS]]

Danny Boy:

Danny, for his part, is in a murdering mood, and Gus has his full attention. Ignoring the battle between clank, Indian, and undead soldier, the boy raises his scythe high and leaps after Gus.

"DIE, YE SON OF A BITCH!" He screams as he brings the harvesting implement down. Gus yowls in pain as the blade carves a furrow from his arm.

[[OOC: Danny Boy has revenge on his mind, so he charges and Wild Attacks Gus. Both Gus and Danny are in the radius of Dim Light from CB's lantern

Danny's attack: -1 dim light, +2 Wild Attack. Danny Boy rolled 2,17 using d6+1,d6+1, rerolling max with rolls of 1,(6+6+4)16. Fighting! That's a Raise. Danny Boy rolled 12 using 3d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 4,1,5. Damage. That will make Gus Shaken and gives him 1 wound.

Gus spends a chip to soak. Gus Shaw rolled 7,2 using d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 7,2. soak attempt. Gus soaks the wound, and I'm down another chip from my pool.

Danny Boy drew the single card: 8D]]

Charging Bear lands a decisive chop right into the rotting guts of the black-clad dead soldier, a blow that would disembowel any normal man, but not only does the horror not seem to feel the blow, he stops singing and laughs.

"Tell me, Charging Bear...do you think your sister cried as the soldiers cut her to pieces with their rifles? Do you think she would have cried if she'd known you were the one who tipped off the soldiers to the village's presence when they spotted you playing down by the creek?"

While the native son is busy digesting the thing's words, it brings up its saber to spear him in the gut, then turns its pistol on the fallen Alouette.

"Glory, glory, hallelujah!" It grins as it fires point blank at the downed automaton...

[[OOC: Spending one of the abomination's personal chips for soak roll. Private John Brown rolled 4,11 using d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,(6+5)11. soak attempt.

Re: Spirits protect him.

Danny Boy:

The pain in his thigh was less than Danny had expected, but more than he really wanted to deal with. Using the scythe for leverage he focused on trying to stand. That redneck bastard would pay for this, oh yes.

Some shouts from the darkness caught his attention. Another light was on it's way. Damn. This wasn't the plan. All he'd wanted to do was get a horse...he still needed to get q horse and get away. And what was he going to do about John?

He thought it was John. It was as tall as John, and shaped like John, and spoke like him a bit...but it was a monster! A dead man walking! But he'd jumped up and helped Danny when Danny had needed support most, and he couldn't just leave him to the Dust Adders...

What was he going to do?

Whatever he was going to do, he'd have to do it fast. At least he'd made it to his feet.

[[OOC: Having failed his soak roll, Danny has a wound and can't spend a chip to recover from Shaken, so he has to recover naturally.

Danny Boy rolled 3,7 using d8-1,d6-1, rerolling max with rolls of 4,(6+2)8. recover from shaken attempt. he recovers, but it takes his round.]]

Gus Shaw:

Gus waits in the darkness, flicking the spent casings out of his gun and loading in fresh rounds. In the distance, he can hear shouts and running footfalls. The Calvary was on its way.

"Woooo! Over here, boys! We got's ourselves a sitiation!" he shouts.

[[OOC: Gus Shaw spends his action reloading his Dragoon and calling out to the oncoming Dust Adders.]]

Initiative for next round:

Danny Boy: AD
Private John Brown: QC
Gus Shaw: 8C
Charging Bear: 6C *Still needs to resolve being stabbed, which I'll wait for before continuing. Also, please see below.
The Dust Adders: 4C
Augustus Spotswood: 3S
Alouette: 2H

You have one round before the Dust Adders are close enough to start interacting with folks. Augustus can probably reach them on his turn if he runs.

Notice:

Do you (the players) want to take the roles of the Dust adders as extras in this fight? Right now I'm sure they're going to put aside differences and deal with the undead menace over dealing with grudges from earlier (except maybe Dave, but that's why he's not an option).

If you want to take on the role of one or two of the Dust Adders, you can control one of them on your turn (any who don't get picked will go on their own initiative card under the GM's control).

The Dust Adders have the following stats:

Dust Adder
Attributes: Agility d8, Smarts d6, Spirit d6, Strength d8, Vigor d6
Skills: Fighting d6, Gambling d6, Intimidation d6, Knowledge (Cattle Ranching) d6, Notice d6, Riding d6, Shooting d6, Stealth d6, Survival d6
Charisma: –2; Pace: 6; Parry: 5; Toughness: 5
Hindrances: Overconfident, Mean, Vengeful (Minor)
Edges: Quick Draw

The four Dust Adders are Percy, Dave, Jack, and Carl.

Percy: is armed with a knife (str+d4) and an El Cheapo Winchester '76 (24/48/96, 2d8 damage, RoF 1, 15 shots, AP 2), along with 1 extra load of ammunition. He's the son of a schoolmarm, and was taught to speak properly.

Dave: Hate your guts. He's unavailable for use by the PCs.

Jack: is armed with a bowie knife (str+d4+1) and a Single Action Colt Army (12/24/48, 2d6+1 damage, RoF 1, 6 shots, AP 1, SA), and 3 extra loads of ammunition. He carries a lantern for light. He has the Yellow hindrance.

Carl: is armed with a bowie knife (str+d4+1) and an El Cheapo double barrel shotgun (12/24/48, 1-3d6 damage, RoF 1-2, 2 shots, +2 to shooting rolls) with 6 grapeshot shells and 4 slug shells (2d10 damage, no shooting bonus). He was Ward's driver and wasn't involved in the fight in town.

Re: Spirits protect him.

OOC: Alright time to try to stay alive.

22:03, Yesterday: Charging Bear rolled 5,5 using 1d6,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5,5. spirit vs 11.
Versus Private John Brown's 11 that's a fail, and nets him a raise on his intimidate roll.

And now I'm headed to the Incapacitation table cause I seriously doubt I can soak 5 wounds

Vigor @ -3 (maximum amount of wound penalty available)
09:24, Today: Charging Bear rolled -26,-1 using 1d6-36,1d6-3, rerolling max with rolls of (6+4)10,2. Incap roll.
09:28, Today: Charging Bear rolled -1,1 using 1d6-3,1d6-3, rerolling max with rolls of 2,4. Incap roll (corrected).
09:28, Today: Charging Bear rolled 11 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of (6+5)11. Red Chip.

Alright... so the first roll had a typo (-36 yikes) so I rerolled and got worse results, regardless of which roll sticks I'll burn my red chip (enjoy the free chip oh mighty Marshal) for an extra d6 added to the roll... which will net me a +11 which is a raise which is good-ish...
