Description: The VEF-2X Prototype is an experimental craft created as an alternative to the VEF-1. During the testing phase of the VEF-1, several of the vehicles were damaged or destroyed outright and their crews killed due to various flaws with the airframe. Despite this rocky start, production and testing continued. However, UEDF Command decided to approach Shinnikasu Heavy Industry to design a variant of the VEF-1 that would not risk as many lives in the event of the vehicle's destruction. Starting with the basic airframe of the VEF-1, SHI stripped it down to the "bare bones" and completely redesigned the fighter. Using a one-man cockpit was the first change, followed by the installation of an integrated FAST Pack. While expensive, this module made the new fighter almost three times as fast as any other fighter currently in development. Another change brought on by SHI is that the VEF-2X is completely stripped of all armor, except around the Cockpit, the radome, and the antennaes. This measure was necessary due to the fact that the Two Ex is structurally incapable of supporting so much mass. It was felt by SHI that since the Two Ex is not a combat craft, the danger to it was minimal and that the FAST Pack would enable it to run from any dangerous situation it would find itself in.
The VEF-1 was quickly adopted by UEDF Command, but the variant -2X was not. Because of the complicated controls, blending piloting and EWAR tasks, many pilots were unqualified to act as EWOs, while many EWOs simply were not talented enough pilots to handle the craft. In fact, only three VEF-2Xs have been constructed by SHI to date.
The original prototype remains at SHI's main plant in Okinawa where it will undergo several revisions. The second prototype is currently aboard the ARMD-07
Ranger, piloted by SCPO Lucas Bixby. The third was being studied at Armstrong AFB, but was transferred to the
Ranger to undergo further field testing alongside its twin.
The -2X has been lauded, however, by many as the perennial ELINT craft. Its capabilities in T/AWACS and EWAR far surpass the VEF-1 and the Cat's/Tiger's Eye.
